The rich-toned, musically elegant, always dignified contralto Marian Anderson (1897-1993) is probably best known as the first African-American to sing at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, but by the time she did (in the mid '50s), her once burnished, glorious voice was no longer at its best. Years before, when she was not permitted to sing in the Daughters of the American Revolution's Constitution Hall (or any other hall in the U.S. capital), she gave a concert in the open air, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, which was attended by press, dignitaries, and a crowd of more than 75,000. Much of her late work is well known--arias from Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, spirituals, and the like--but this CD also allows us to hear the voice when it was young--in the 1930s and '40s. One can almost hear Schubert's trout ("Die Forelle") dancing around in the water, and an aria by Scarlatti shows Anderson's coloratura abilities--the big voice could be scaled down to intimate, chamberlike proportions. She brings her intelligence and textual insights to other songs by Schubert and Brahms as well. This is a marvelous collection and a fine tribute to an American original. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Marian Anderson - an outstanding collection.......2003-05-03
This CD with recordings of Marian Anderson between 1936 and 1952, should be heavily promoted. The CD gives listeners a fantastic opportunity to hear the singer in a variety of song styles and languages. I heard her sing live, once, in the 1960's and was stunned then by her vocal skills and musicality. This is the first record or CD which truly reflects her amazing talent.

The inimitable Heifetz recorded other versions of these works, but it's hard to understand why this set remained unpublished. Perhaps minor blemishes, such as the slight tonal roughness at the start of Beethoven's G Major Romance and the shrill engineering of the Chausson Poème, consigned them to the storage vaults. Now that we can hear them, though, they can't fail to satisfy, especially since they're sufficiently different from the published recordings to fascinate connoisseurs. The Beethoven Romances, for example, are more flexible with the Philharmonia than in the later American recording. And the Lalo Symphonie espagnole, missing its Intermezzo in keeping with the custom of the time, is also more relaxed than Heifetz's American version. The Chausson is gorgeous as well, benefiting from Monteux's stylish accompaniment. It dates from 1945 and sounds it, but the others, from 1950, come up fresh and vibrant, with Heifetz's golden tone intact. --Dan Davis

The Haydn and Mozart quartets are the only live performances ever published by this celebrated ensemble, which made many recordings in the early 1950s. They are even more intense and vital than the group's studio recordings, full of drive and power, but never going outside the bounds of the classical style. The HSQ also does full justice to the wonderful quartet by Mozart's favorite pupil, Hummel, in what still seems to be its only recording since before World War II. This is one of the most valuable issues of Testament's extensive Hollywood String Quartet series. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:
Francesco Tamagno, the first Otello.......2000-02-17
Opal records has released a cd, "Francesco Tamagno:Complete Recordings". The transfers are superb, but these recordings were made after Signor Tamango had effectively retired from performing due to chronic heart disease, and must be evaluated with that in mind. Even so, his phrasing is masterful and the voice is still magnificent. He is remembered as the man who first sang Verdi's "Otello", learning the role with the Maestro's supervision. One can imagine Tamagno singing the "Esultate!" to the adulation of audiences worldwide. There are in existance a number of additional unpublished recordings which do not appear on this collection, yet for the opera afficionado who desires to experience the artistry of Francesco Tamagno, this cd is essential.

Desert Island Schubert...and more.......2006-08-16
After reading Mr. Chung's review, I simply wanted to provide a different perspective on these recordings. First, as to the sound: I thought that, for their era, the 1944 radio broadcasts of the VPO in the Schubert and Mozart were excellent. I have heard many live recordings from the 1950's that are not as good. There is some light hiss, but the orchestra is in full bloom and clear, without any wavering of pitch. The 1939 BPO recordings of the Handel and Beethoven are, not surprisingly, thinner and dimmer. There is a large-hall acoustic that clouds some detail, and a fairly distant sonic perspective. And yet, even in these recordings I found that my ear adjusted quickly. The BPO string sheen (famous in the late 1930's) is well caught, and I am thankful Tahra did not employ excessive noise reduction. Now, on to the music. I have never heard a more seductive, more graceful, more heartfelt Entracte No. 3 from Schubert's Rosamunde. This would not be a bad choice to be the last thing a person heard while departing this world. The word 'sublime' gets rather tossed around, but it actually applies here. This performance alone justifies the cd. The Mozart symphony is in my view superior to the 1949 Wiesbaden performance with the BPO (available on Tahra 1021 and also on an old Virtuoso cd in somewhat fiercer, but more present, sound) mentioned by Mr. Chung. The opening allegro here has real poignancy, and the andante has a delightful lilt and charming accents. There is often an aching, plaintive quality that does not appear in the Wiesbaden recording. Throughout, the playing of the VPO, especially the winds, is virtuosic, and ensemble is excellent. One does not hear any of those vague entries for which Furtwangler is (unfairly, in my opinion) parodied. John Ardoin says in his book, The Furtwangler Record, that VPO recordings of this symphony are more "manicured" and "restrained," while the BPO recordings are more "full-bodied." He did not, however, have access to this recording when he wrote the book, and it would be interesting to hear his opinion of it. It is certainly more beautiful than the Wiesbaden performance, and completely lacks, to my ear, all that the word 'manicured' connotes. The Beethoven 5th from 1939 is the most conventional of the several WF recordings of this symphony I've heard, less heavy and less rhetorical, with fewer of the accelerandos and ritards that later entered his performances. It's not manic (like the wartime 5th), or even gripping, but I thought it a very effective performance. It's the VPO recordings, however, that make this twofer one you might want to try to audition. The Schubert and Mozart are both extraordinary, and confirm Furtwangler's special genius.
Furtwangler Unpublished...but performance is not so good........2000-11-28
These historical documents were kept Broadcasting Archives in Berlin and Wien. But I think it's an important 'document' only. Handel's Concerto grosso op.6 no.5 and Beethoven's 5th symphony-performed by Berliner Philharmoniker-was recorded live in Berlin(13 September 1939). I was thought 'It's a taped concert' but its recording material is very noisy eight acetate discs. Moreover, 7th disc has been lost. So, Tahra put 1937 HMV studio recording between 6th and 8th disc. And Tahra restored so 'pure sound' in original discs. Its scratch noise is so loud. Schubert's Entr'acte no.3 from Rosamunde and Mozart's 40th symphony-performed by Wiener Philharmoniker-was recorded live(without audience) in Wien(2-3 June 1944). It's a magnetic tape recording but I don't like these performances. Furtwangler's approach in this symphony so fast and so drastic. I like better EMI's studio recording(Wiener Philharmoniker, 1948-49) and live recording in Wiesbaden(Berliner Philharmoniker, 1949). But other recordings are good. In unpublished two interview in German(But interviewer Henry Jaton speaks French and Furtwangler's speech translate French, too. In booklet, Tahra wrote two languages-French and English.), we'll know Furtwangler's thinking of conducting. And very rare repertoire conducted by Furtwangler, Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales' two rehersal recordings(with Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1953) are contained, too. It's a most important document in this CD. Furtwangler's music-making is preserved very good here. And, second rehersal is performed completely this work without pause. But, Tahra put together two rehersals irresponsibly. Maybe you listen only second rehersal, it's a very tiresome for you(First rehersal is nearly 18 minutes).

Requiem for a wounded warrior.......2000-07-20
This disk was released as a commemorative of the artist's tragic death from AIDS in 1988 and contained what one must call "bootleg" recordings of Ledroit's concert appearances. Well, they somehow cleared this with the estate (don't ask me how) and the disk is now for sale! Henri Ledroit was the most compelling, charismatic voice in the business. He wasn't actually the best singer of his counter-tenor day, but his voice has an ineffable melancholy that touches from beyond the grave. The recording features some rarities, a Cesti cantata and a Jomelli aria, of varying degrees of success. Ledroit had his good days and his not so good days, and we get a little of both. Vivaldi's Stabat Mater is deeply felt, his Handel and Scarlatti a shade less so, but are musts for the serious Ledroit fan. I also recommend buying the disk for the booklet that comes with, giving us a truly informative and touching portrait of the artist.
