Phenomenal.......2007-01-04

One of the best composers of the 20th century, this rendition of W.G.S's music is moving and well recorded.

Worth it for the "Lyric Quartet" alone.......2006-05-31

The first half of this album contains some of the most beautiful, breathtaking music for strings ever written, played and recorded. Very sentimental and heartfelt, quite accessible for those unfamiliar with Grant's works. I give this cd 4 stars for this 3 movement piece alone.
The same liveliness is also evident in the three works which follow, Danzaz De Panama", "Prince and the Mermaid Suite" and "Summerland".
But toward the end one will have realized that they've already heard the best that this album has to offer, as it tends to grow stale and even wearisome and transform into audio wallpaper.
The first half - fantastic.****
The second half - yawn.
But "Lyric Suite" is a tough act to follow.

Underappreciated genius.......2005-12-11

Whatever other reviewers may say about this recording, its historical significance cannot be overlooked. Robert Russell Bennett was one of the greatest orchestrators are country has ever been fortunate enough to call its own, and a man of tremendous creative talent. Louis Kaufman was a brilliant violinist and a historical figure of great import. He is a throwback, no question, and some less open-minded commentators may be put off by that. But make no mistake, this recording rates very highly. It is a one-of-a-kind, and a real find. Buy it!

Soundtrack from Attack of the B Movies.......2002-09-15

Having listened to the selections on this disc, I found it quite difficult to appreciate Mr. Kaufman's violin artistry. These tracks of modern era stream-of-consciousness-B-movie-sound- track music run together with little to distinguish one from another--excepting Still's insipid "The Blues"--all replete with the sound deadening reproduction of the 1940's.
