Overtures are better than the Concerto here.......2005-08-16

Being a Bernstein fan in many works since 1972, I bought this Sony Royal Edition release expecting more than I got from the Violin Concerto. Though Isaac Stern's virtuosity is never in doubt, something just doesn't "gel" in his recording of Beethoven's only violin concerto with Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. Tempos tend to be on the slow side, but the sound is a little harsh in climaxes, and at times the overall effect is tedious. Other listeners may not agree, but I prefer Mutter/Karajan (DG) in this work. I have read in various sources that Stern's later recording of Beethoven's Violin Concerto with Daniel Barenboim/ New York Philharmonic (Odyssey, no coupling; Sony with discmates) is better than Stern/Bernstein.

Bernstein's Overtures, "Leonore III" and "Consecration of the House" are both excellent. The sound is wonderful, and if "Consecration" seems a bit tame at first, it builds to a huge climax of intensity: the closing measures have a great air of celebration and festival. Leonore III is also very good, the closing measures really driven and victorious.

Having heard Bernstein's New York Beethoven overtures to "Egmont" and "King Stephen", I wonder if Sony might consider releasing a disc of Bernstein/New York Beethoven Overtures: Consecration of the House, Leonore III, Egmont, King Stephen, Coriolan, and Fidelio. That would be something to have.

Excellent Beethoven Courtesy Of Harnoncourt And COE.......2001-12-23

Fans of box sets will certainly treasure this splendid collection, which unites all of Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Beethoven recordings with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. It is absolutely stunning, not only with regards to sound, but also with the exceptional performances given by the orchestra, vocal soloists in the "Missa Solemnis" and violinist Gidon Kremer in the violin concerto. The "Creatures of Promethus" performance is the best I have heard. As for the entire symphony cycle, this is the Beethoven to acquire if you're looking for one set. Harnoncourt leads the COE in brisk, exciting interpretations of the symphonies that combine the best of period instrument practice and contemporary performance. Other acclaimed cycles, most notably those from Abbado, Barenboim, Gardiner and Zinman, have been issued since Harnoncourt's was released, yet his remains first choice.

Excellent Beethoven Presented With A Great Smile.......2001-06-08

Although it runs $100 for 10 CDs, this set qualifies as a bargain. Harnoncourt presents an impressive rethink of Beethoven's symphonies, as well as sterling versions of the violin concerto, various ovetures, the Missa Solemnis and Creatures of Prometheus. All of this is handsomely packaged as a box set, complete with a long and detailed booklet explaining Harnoncourt's approach. Perhaps the most unusual feature of the set it that is contains a picture of Harnoncourt smiling! Prior to purchasing this set, in every picture I had ever seen of the man he was wearing a VSS (Very Serious Scowl) that seemed both pretentious and off-putting.

Anyway, the music...I have reviewed the 9th symphony seperately and for me it represents the highlight of both the symphonic cycle as well as the set...just a flat-out great performance. Other standouts in the symphonies are the 8th (best version I have heard), 4th, 6th and 1st. The 6th is controversially slow, although the slower this symphony is the better I like it, and therefore it works for me. The 5th will not make you forget Kleiber (what would?), but it is strong version nonetheless. 3 and 7 will probably divide listeners...the heroic element is 3 is downplayed and the dance element in 7 is trimmed by lessening the rythmic drive...neither would be a first choice, but both are interesting alternative versions. Perhaps the greatest virtue of the set is the consistency of the interpretation and execution. There is no weak link here...no one or two symphonies that are obviously below par.

As to the rest of the set, well, things just get better. The violin concerto (with Gidon Kremer) is absolutely outstanding...it may be the best version in recent memory. Both Kremer and Harnoncourt catch fire early and sustain an almost wild abandon throughout. As for the Missa Solemnis and Creatures of Prometheus, both are excellent versions that can stand with any. To top everything off, all the major overtures and romances are represented with very nice performances.

For me, this set represents as good an integral set of Beethoven's symphonic output as one is likely to find. Harnoncourt is interesting, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe is outstanding, as are Kremer, the Chorus and the various vocalists. Teldec's recording is absolutely first rate. I still pull out the Kleiber, Klemperer and Furtwangler, but more and more I find myself reaching for the Harnoncourt above all others. And, the guy has a great smile!

A Winner!.......2001-05-22

These performances of the Symphonies of Beethoven, the Vioin Concerto, Overtures, The Creatures of Prometheus and the Missa Solemnis should be on the shelf of every serious music lover. Harnoncourt's radically different approach to these familiar works of Beethoven will cause some to cringe and cause others to leap from their seats in absolute joy. Harnoncourt and the COE have thrown all long held performance traditions out of the window and the result is refreshing and, at times, downright alarming. The textures are lean, crisp and biting. The tempos almost never drag, the listener is constantly propelled forward by these unique and absolutely spell-binding performances. And Teldec has captured them in magnificent digital sound.

After listening to these performances, one can understand why Beethoven was considered such a revolutionary. Go ahead and purchase these recordings. You will never hear a more gripping account of these works anywhere else. Bravo Harnoncourt! Bravo Chamber Orchestra of Europe! Bravo Beethoven!

This was a fair cd. It was not one of Beethoven's best, however it is not bad at all. It is definitely worth a try.

All Under One Roof: The Ultimate Abbado Sampler.......2006-01-30

This 25-CD set is intended to commemorate the then-25-year-long working relationship between Deutsche Grammophon and Claudio Abbado. The preface to each of the CD booklets is the same for all 25 CDs: a letter from Dr. Andreas Holschneider, president of DG, to Claudio. It's a Dear Claudio letter that explains the impetus behind, and structure of, this celebratory issue, and what it's intended to document: a history going back to 1967. Holschneider's biggest problem was a simple one: out of over 150 recordings Abbado had completed, less than one-sixth could appear in this box set.

Of course, monster box sets are now in vogue: 171 CDs for the Complete Mozart Edition on Brilliant Classics; also 171 CDs for the Hanssler Complete Bach Edition. DG therefore COULD have offered the whole thing had they been so inclined, but the market for a 25-CD set wasn't that large to begin with. Remember that there is a LOT of music on 25 CDs. It may be dwarfed by the Bach and Mozart monster boxes (not to mention the Complete Beethoven Edition by DG itself, which runs to 87 CDs), but it is commensurate in size to the complete works of several major composers: William Walton in a 23-CD boxset, Prokofiev in a 24-CD boxset, and Bartok in a 29-CD boxset.

So, aside from made-over packaging and CD booklets with an integrated "look," what does this quasi-vanity project give us that we don't get from the original releases? Re-mastering isn't explicitly credited anywhere in this set, and a comparison of several CDs in this box set with the original releases doesn't yield any noticeable differences to my ear. One might have hoped that earlier analog cuts might have been better de-hissed and cleaned up, for example, but such processing is not evident. So, we must treat this for what is: a rare, out-of-print collection of The Best of Abbado's First 25 Years. It functions something like DG's Complete Beethoven Edition, which is also out-of-print -- namely, it becomes something that gains collector status with time.

There is variety aplenty in this boxset (which Holschneider intended to achieve). Enough Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, and Schubert to please less adventurous ears, but some Berg and Stravinsky to push the envelope a bit. Quite a few orchestras are heard here: Chicago, London Symphony, Vienna Phil, Berlin, Boston, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, etc. Some are live performances (e.g., the Eroica with the Vienna Philharmonic). There is a mix of analog and digital recordings, pretty much determined by recording date. But as a "sampler," you get nothing complete in any mini-genre. Why program the Brahms 2nd symphony, but not the 1st or 4th? Why program 2 CDs of Mozart piano concertos, but not a single Mozart symphony? We get symphonies 3,5,6, and 7 of Beethoven's, but no 9th. Why didn't DG configure this set to include all 9 Beethoven symponies and all 4 Brahms symponies, plus Mozart's symphonies 35-41? Wouldn't the appeal of this collection have quadrupled knowing you were getting some sequences of major works without gaping holes?

Well, the simple reason this didn't happen is because DG President Andreas Holschneider has a Ph.D., and knows better than folks like us on how to market Abbado and program a box set. On the other hand, this box set isn't in print anymore. Maybe that Ph.D. didn't come in all that handy after all.

The performances are 5 stars, the recordings would have been awarded 5 stars IF we were living in the year the recording was done. But nowadays, we have a right to expect better sound in the re-mastering process. What has been programmed is played with intensity and integrity, and always with a deft hand, but the program contents leave something to be desired (as noted above). If the intent is to leave you "wanting more," I suppose this sampler achieves that. This principle obviously works in the case of "opera highlights" from Carmen and Aida. But others might simpy be annoyed at the "set list."

If you simply like Claudio's work (as do I), grab this set. You'll find Claudio at his best here, insofar as his first quarter-century with DG is concerned. On the other hand, he's doing some amazing stuff the last several years, with an exceptionally strong, new Mahler cycle coming into view album by album.
