I ordered this CD because of the price, and quickly found out why it is a cheap one. The narration is fine, but it is spoken over the music, and the music is just excerpts except for the featured selections at the end of the CD, which is all of four pieces. This is a great CD for the car - a little audio learning lesson, and does give a good intro into some of Dvoraks most famous pieces. But, it is no Carl Haas rendition.

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:

Back in "Iron Curtain" times it was by no means easy to hear Soviet-bloc artists in the U.S., and recordings really established international reputations over here. And based on available recordings it was generally conceded that the two great Czechoslovak string quartets were the Janacek and the Smetana, the former based in Moravia (Brno), the latter in Bohemia (Prague). The heyday of the Janacek Quartet was the 1950s and 1960s when these recordings were made for Deutsche Grammophon, British Decca and Westminster. About half were recorded in mono, the rest are stereo; but all are, technically speaking, very decently produced and wear their years lightly. Performance highlights for me are the Decca recordings of Dvorak and Haydn quartets; the DG recording of the Brahms piano quintet (with Eva Bernathova); and the stunning Westminster performance of the Mendelssohn Octet (where the Smetana Quartet joins in!). The great conductor Karl Bohm once declared that the Czech lands were the home of great string playing, and when you hear these recordings you sense the justness of that remark. These players produce an ineffable sweetness of sound that never cloys, and they phrase with an easy naturalness that, on every re-hearing, discloses new subtleties. No, this is not high-powered American string playing ala the Julliard Quartet; what the Janacek Quartet offers is a style and sound that is almost lost in today's internationalized musical performance world. Catch this set while you can; it's billed as a limited edition and many of the performances have been unavailable (in the U.S., at least) since the early 1960s. Space-saving soft box format and price are additional inducements, but these priceless recordings would be a bargain at twice the price DG is charging. Final note: no collection of the Janacek Quartet's work is complete without their stunning stereo recording of the two great quartets written by their namesake, currently available on a midprice Supraphon CD. Although an earlier, mono recording of the second Janacek quartet is included in the DG box, spend a little extra for the Supraphon CD just to get the Janacek Quartet's equally stunning performance of Janacek No. 1 ("Kreutzer Sonata" quartet). You won't regret the minor duplication, plus the Supraphon CD also includes a pleasant, "off the beaten path" quartet by 19th century Czech Romantic Vtislav Nowak as a substantial bonus. But for heaven's sake, don't hesitate to buy the DG collection right now!

Why this CD is NLA is a complete mystery to me. Great combination of two classic Dvorak chamber pieces, played to perfection. The rendition of the quintet may knock over my allegiance to the old Curzon/Vienna from the early '60s; has all the emotion and dance, with better playing and ensemble. The Quartet is equal to Quartetto Italiano version, and old landmark. I actually prefer the Tokyo for the second movement. Grab if you can find it, even used!

Another outstanding versions from one of the leader chamber groups in the last decades, which is not in so good shape nowadays.

I really don't know any other version for American Quartet so great like this. Technically is incredible and de way thay play together, the accents, de melody, the musicality is quite impossible to repeat.

Piano Quintet is a jewel too, both by the quartet and the pianist. We have another great version in Philips with Richter and the Borodin Quartet, more warm than this and with a bit more of european taste; but this is amazing too.

I really don't understand how Sony has taken it out of them catalogue. Today this is an out of print CD very hard to find.

Truly amazed that Dvorak, whose symphonies are outside of my range of appreciation (should I be ashamed of that? I don't know . . . ), wrote such lovely, evocative chamber music. I've listened to this set of 4 CDs repeatedly, with growing delight at the beauty of the music but also at the harmonious interplay between all the instruments -- but then the Lindsays are a fantastic quartet. I have heard no one better, live or recorded. They were my reason for purchasing this set, and their performance is astounding. The quartets and quintets here are marvellously melodious, with nothing strong or heavy-handed, so I found myself constantly questioning "Are you sure this is Dvorak?" While anything performed by the Lindsays is fabulous, I have to say that this collection really shows to advantage their precision and rendering skills and their wonderful coordination, so that the quartets especially are beautifully executed. A really fine CD, great for any collector who likes or loves string quartets.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28

I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.

Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.

I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.

I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.

    It's only logical that America's greatest string quartet should play Dvorák's "American" Quartet extremely well. Of course, there's nothing "American" about Dvorák's music except for the fact that it was composed in the space of a few days in Iowa, where the composer was vacationing for the summer. Along with the late Piano Quintet, in which the quartet is joined by the superlative pianist Rudolf Firkusny, this disc makes a irresistible budget-priced package. --David Hurwitz

    As a bargain coupling of Dvorak's two most famous chamber works, this CD can't be faulted. The Juilliard Qt. plays with alertness and vivacious rhythms in the 'American' Quartet, and the same forthright style flows over into the Piano Quintet with Rudolf Firkusny, a Czech pianist famed in his day as a Dvorak specialist. Even so, I don't find his playing as eloquent as Richter's in his classic performance on EMI, nor is the quartet as moving and satisfying as with the Alban Berg Qt., also on EMI.

    Certainly these are enjoyable readings. I just don't find them anywhere near the best to be had on CD, and Sony's rather edgy digital sound, coupled with the Juilliard's somewhat stark sonority, isn't a great asset.

    Dvorak's American Quintet receives on this disc a fine rendering at the hands of the able Juilliard Quartet. I can find little wrong with it. So too does the great op. 81 quintet (I will personally place only the Brahms op.34 before it). However, it seems to me that the tempi in the quicker movements are a little too slow, and the ensemble playing seems rickety at times. For instance, I always feel the wheels are about to come off during the development of the final movement of the quintet. I think this has more to do with Firkusny. Whether he made this recording at the end of his career with an ailing technique or he had an off day I don't know. He seems winded and one often gets the impression he struggles to catch up to the Juilliard string players. To give credit where it is due, Firkusny and the Juilliards perform with great harmonic color and panache. This account is fire-filled and intense, but a little lacking in precision for my taste. I would recommend Richter and the Borodin Quartet or Haefliger and the extremely polished Takacs Quartet as alternatives for the Piano Quintet. But this is a good disc all around.

    After further review, I would like to upgrade my previous rating to 5 stars (with apologies for what it did to the average). In addition to the marvellous string quartet, there is a fabulous rendition of the piano quintet. In some ways it is more exciting than the Emersons' outstanding version. In both recordings however, the upper strings sound abrasive.

    You can't do better for this coupling.

    This is a very good performance of the American quartet. Tempo, phrasing, dynamics, everything about it is just right, save one thing--the shrill intonation of the violins. Trust me, I wish I could find the ideal American. I have tried about 6 or 7 of the current top recommendations, and they all fall short in one way or another. I like to hear the first movement's folksy melodic lines articulated in a clean but relaxed manner. Too many quartets either rush the tempo, and/or slur the rhythms. The Juilliard got it just right. The only problem is, in certain passages, I wince when I hear the violins. That aside, the ensemble as a whole plays quite beautifully, particularly in the slow movement.

    The best American I've heard is by the Quartetto Italiano (NLA), last seen on the old Philips Silver Line label. With all the re-releasing going on I'm surprised it hasn't re-surfaced. When Philips does re-release it, go for it! In the meantime, this is probably the best one available.

    One of the great works of chamber music played immaculately. Great sound given the age of the recording, and everything else about it -- the ensemble, the tempo, the dynamics -- is just right. With a piece as popular as this there is often the temptation for musicians to try to put their individual touch on it, but this recording has no self-indulgences.
