VIENNAFEST A FEAST FOR THE EARS!.......2000-11-07

Erich Kunzel is the baton and the heart of the Cincinnati Pops. I am fortunate enough to live in the Cincinnati area and have seen and heard the Pops in person. It is an awesome experience. However, if you cannot get to Cincinnati or to one of his on-tour performances, the Telarc CDs are as close to live as you can get! Viennafest is no exception. The care that is so evident on every Cincinnati Pops release is meticulous. The waltzes and marches are melodious and true to the theme of the CD. I eagerly await the release of each Erich Kunzel CD--BRAVO!

Inspired playing, tedious conducting.......2007-06-24

I've been tuning in to PBS's broadcast of the New Year's Strauss concert from Vienna every year, but 2006 was the first time the champagne went totally flat. Jansons is not a born Strauss conductor, to say the least. The joyous waltzes, polkas, and gallops of the Strauss family dynasty permit a wide variation in style, even in their home town. Erich and Carlos KIleiber were both bracingly fierce; Frutwangler was symphonic and grand; Harnoncourt idiosyncratic but compelling. Only Seiji Ozawa, who conducted as if he'd never heard Strauss before, sounded as alien as Jansons.

To begin with, there's a langour surrounding the concert that is quite soporific. Tempos are slowish, phrasing cautious. You won't hear a corset stay snap in this environment. Everything is correct and enormously dull. The commerical package is a bargain -- 2 CDs for the price of one--and the sonics are exemplary, as is the palying of the Vienna Phil. But unless you like to play music as wallpaper, there's nothing to pay attention to here. I'd say that Jansons is trying to become the next Zubin Mehta except that Mehta is a much better conductor of Strauss, as his several New Year's concerts prove.

Awesome Stuff..........2006-12-26

The more I hear of these concerts, the more impressed I get. With all the excitement the crowd generates, you wouldn't think this was a classical presentation. There's an energy that you would expect from a rock concert.

I never really enjoyed waltzs before I started to listen to these. I might have to start getting the DVD's because the scenes of Vienna mesh really well with the music.

Wonderful music.......2006-05-23

I watched the New Year's Concert on TV and was immediately impressed by Jansons who was unknown to me. Having watched previous concerts from Vienna, I believe this is the best one in quite a while. I now have the CD and will be listening to it frequently until the next New Year's Concert in January. I hope Mariss Jansons will be invited back to Vienna again to conduct once more!

Splendid Neujahrskonzert from Mariss Jansons and the Wiener Philharmoniker.......2006-05-19

I could sense a special chemistry between conductor Mariss Jansons and the Wiener Philharmoniker when he led them on their 2005 North American tour - which visited only New York City - during three special concerts I heard back in early March, 2005 at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. The orchestra's performances were as vibrant and warm as those I had heard a few years earlier under the batons of Bernard Haitink and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. So I was surprised and delighted to hear that Maestro Jansons would make his New Year's Concert debut for the 2005-2006 season. Indeed, I believe the orchestra made a rather wise, quite inspirational, choice, since the CD liner notes written by the Wiener Philharmoniker's president, violinist Clemens Hellsberg, mentions Jansons's familiarity and strong affinity with the music of the Strauss family.

Jansons leads the Wiener Philharmoniker in a fine program comprised mostly of waltzes, polkas and marches composed by Johann Strauss, Josef Strauss, and the "Waltz King" himself, Johann Strauss II. But a special highlight of this year's concert is the Mozart overture from "Le nozze di Figaro" ("The Marriage of Figaro"), paying tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in honor of the composer's 250th birthday. Other highlights include the premieres of Joseph Lanner's "Die Mozartisten" waltz and Josef Strauss's "Telephon" polka. Needless to say, the Wiener Philharmoniker plays with ample gusto, led enthusiastically by Jansons in heart-felt, stirring interpretations of popular, venerable Viennese music like Johann Strauss II's "Fruhlingsstimmen" ("Voices of Spring") and "Kunstlerleben" ("An Artist's Life") waltzes. Once more the performance ends on a familiar note with the two traditional encores of Johann Strauss II's "An der schonen, blauen Donau" ("The Blue Danube Waltz") and Johann Strauss's "Radetzky-Marsch" ("Radetzky March"); the latter ending in thunderous applause from an enthusiastic, appreciative audience.

Deutsche Grammophon's sound engineers have done a superlative job recording this live concert. It may be the best I have heard so far in the annual "New Year's Concert" series. On a more personal note, I regard this CD as recording the most memorable "New Year's Concert" I have heard from the Wiener Philharmoniker since the 2003 New Year's Concert which was conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Once a year one of the world's greatest orchestras throws a wonderful hour and a half long party of light classical fare for the entire world to enjoy. If you are a devout fan of Maestro Jansons, the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Strauss family, then don't hesitate to buy this splendid two-CD set; otherwise, you'll miss hearing this exceptional recording of the Wiener Philharmoniker's latest party.

As good as the 1st Album.......2005-09-25

After about two years from their 1st CD "Dream of the Orient", Concerto Koln and Sarband released their 2nd. The content of the new CD is divided into five sections: "Dede the European/Mozart the Turk" (Ismail Dede Efendi: 1778-1846), "From Vienna to the Ottoman Empire", "Musical Contest Alla Turca", "Danubian Waves" and "Mysticism and Ecstasy". The program is well prepared and represent the European (mostly German) and Ottoman (mostly Sufi) music of the era. There are more Ottoman pieces in this CD: while only 7 out of 26 pieces were Ottoman in "The Dream of the Orient", the new CD has 15 of the 27. Please keep in mind that the drums and cymbals of Sarband are less pronounced in this CD; there is no "military" music as the CD title clearly suggests.

It is extremely pleasing to see that this CD, for a second time, brings the East and West a bit closer, at least in music.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt is known for his provocative interpretations of the heavy end of the repertoire, but he really gets into the spirit of these enchanting waltzes, polkas, and marches. Of course, he's got the Vienna Philharmonic here and no orchestra can match them in this music; their delicious winds and silky strings are irresistible. Under Harnoncourt, the music really takes wing--the band gets down and dirty at the beginning of the Night in Venice overture, revels in the twittering bird passages of Josef Strauss's Dorfschwalben aud Osterreich, and delivers marvels of sugared string tone throughout. A bonus disc of encores includes the exemplar of all Viennese waltzes, Johann Strauss II's Blue Danube, played to perfection. Alongside such familiar favorites are many delightful novelties that will be new to even the most devoted waltz fan. One Of The Finest New Year's Day Concerts in Vienna.......2001-09-30

Without a doubt, this is one of the most intriguing collections of Strauss waltzes and other waltzes and polkas currently available. Musicologist and conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt is always ready to take a fresh look at timeless, venerable works such as Johann Strauss' Radetzky March, which opens and closes this two CD recording of the 2001 New Year's Day Concert at the Vienna Philharmonic's concert hall. Certainly this is a long overdue union between Harnoncourt and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra; Harnoncourt gives vibrant, spirited readings of classic Johann Strauss Junior works such as the "Blue Danue Waltz". Teldec has released another splendid live recording with first class sound quality. Those seeking one of the finest compilations of Strauss' music won't be disappointed.

interesting selection.......2001-03-14

I have been an avid follower of the Vienna New Year's Concert for many years, and especially since the conductors chance every year it has become a very intersting musical offering. One has to give Harnoncourt once again great credit for a highly interesting program selection. In the area of light viennese polka and waltz music there a many beaten paths and many favorites played to death. Harnoncourt uses his great knowledge and thoroughness to surprise listeners with different wonderful pieces every time he ventures into this genre. As a musical scholar and teacher one of his great themes is the musical dialogue, and in this collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic (he used to be a cellist in this same orchestra), the dialogue is clearly working very well. My one issue with him once again is pace. Some of the pieces are a bit slow-footed and they loose their lightness in the process.

Harnoncourt's New Years in Vienna 2001.......2001-03-08

Mr. Harnoncourt, a former member of the Vienna Philharmonic, brings all his scholarship and nationality to this delightfully played Vienna New Years concert. His ear for the subtle contrasts and melodic possibilities makes for a scintillating and crystal clear presentation of music dear to the hearts of the performers and conductor. The finesse of playing, and delightful little touches make this a collection a must for those who appreciate this music. Everyone knows what they're doing, and they're having a grand time doing it.

The best album EVER.......2004-01-25

Strauss was a gifted composer, and having lived in Vienna I can appreciate his inspiration. However, the Alexander Scheider Quintet makes Strauss's music magical! I was very new to classical music when I got this CD from my library, and was so enchanted that I bought it for myself. It is such happy music, light and beautiful. One can just picture the formal ball on New Year's Eve in Austria, with the women in flowing gowns and the men in tuxedos. This is my all-time favorite album - even more shocking because I was born and raised a country and bluegrass music fan!

Great for an Oktoberfest celebration!.......2007-01-05

I purchased this title for an Oktoberfest I held in my home. It was the perfect backdrop for a theme party. I'm not really into that kind of music per se, but it fit the mood.

The Real Thing.......2003-12-08

This is a very special recording. Many performances of Viennese dance music suffer from an excessive formality--particularly so when famous conductors get their hands on the scores--that results in a shortage of charm and sweetness. This record, made by a group of Vienna-based musicians including several who perform with the Vienna State Opera, gets the tone and mood of these delightful pieces exactly right. Their performances are relaxed yet polished, playful yet elegant, witty yet accessible--it's an an absolute delight to the ear. By the end of track one, a superb Ländler by Joseph Lanner, I was transported to Café Central on a weekday night, a Grosser Brauner and a Topfenkolatsche in front of me, and some good Viennese Schmäh hanging in the air. This group gets it exactly right.

Very, very warmly recommended, especially for foreigners longing for a taste of the Vienna they once knew. Ah, Sehnsucht.....
