I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.

This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!

Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06

I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.

I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.

This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.

I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.
Well worth the price!

Good for the novice.......2002-06-08

The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

I returned this to New Castle. Box 15550. I have heard nothing. The date of the return was 15/05/07 from my Throop postoffice in Dorset. I sent it recorded delivery. Over to you. There was nothing on the return screen to explain the fault. ie faulty track. So after many attempts to get intouch I sent it to the address on the paper inside the parcel. Please help.

Awesome Collection!.......2006-07-04

As a young boy I would play my trumpet from my father's old Arban's method book. My private trumpet teacher (Mr. Bonfield) would love to play duets with me from the Merchant of Venice. One day I heard Wynoton Marsailas play a a flawless rendition of The Merchant of Venice on my local clasical radio station. It was flawless and brought back many fond memories of studiying the trumpet as a youngster with my beloved teacher. This collection contains that rendition and a wide selecton of clasical trumpet pieces. You may not recognize every song, but you will enjoy the high quality of the music and artists on this CD. Anyone looking for an introduction to quality, classical, trumpet music should buy this CD. The price also makes this an affordable must for any true trumpet fan.

This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.

Wonderful edition to your trumpet collection........2003-10-21

Trumpet fans should all own this album, that is if they don't already own all of the pieces on here on separate recordings (it would take a while to obtain them all). This recording features a bunch of great classical trumpeters and innovators such as Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Gould, H.L. Clarke, Ron Romm, Charles Schleuter, William Vacchiano, and more. Great performances of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2", the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, Wynton's excellent performance of J.B. Arban's "The Carnival Of Venice", the New England Brass Ensemble performing "Trumpet Voluntary", a very good job done by a Baroque Orchestra of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, "The Three Aces" played by H.L. Clarke, and Leroy Anderson's classic "A Bugler's Holiday".

Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.

Quite the CD.......2001-04-17

If I were you, I would buy this CD. It is a diverse collection of amazing performances of quintessential pieces - an important addition to any classical music fan's collection. Heck, even if you're not big on classical music (or trumpet music or brass music or music at all) you should purchase this compact disc.

EXCITING PERFORMANCES VINTAGE STEREO SOUND BUT NOT SACD.......2005-09-27

Despite whar Mr Richman says in his review below this five disc box set does NOT consist of hybrid SACD discs. They are all CDs - generously filled but still basic 16 bit discs. It may be that Mercury's parent company plans to release these discs singly as three channel SACDs but here you get the two channel mixes that originally appeared on LP and on the 1990s CD releases. It would have been great to hear them in three channel - Dorati's "Firebird" sounds magnificent on SACD - but this box is still a bargain. There's some low level hiss and the occasional tape clunk but these are small blemishes on some exciting late 50s and early 60s recordings that make most of today's offerings sound sterile and cautious. Dorati's Tchaikovsky is never winsome or self-pitying. As a masterly ballet conductor Dorati never ignores the lilt and sway of the composer's waltz-inspired lighter moments - but he and the orchestra (London Symphony and Minneapolis) really let rip for the exciting brass perorations. Try the finale of the "Little Russian" symphony, or "Francesca di Rimini", for some real sock-blowing sound! Even if you own other recordings of these popular works try to find a space on your shelf for Dorati and the inimitable Mercury sound.

Dorati's MLP Tchaikovsky Gems Are Back!.......2005-05-25

Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing as SACD hybrids. Unfortunately, they are now being sold at full-price, despite a competing hybrid series on RCA/BMG being available at midline. In spite of the added expense, I hope this MLP reissue trend will continue, and maybe we'll even see a few items getting their CD debut.

This Tchaikovsky Symphony Cycle by the great Antal Dorati has always been one of my favorite MLP offerings. While a two-disc set of Symphonies 1-3 and a single title of the 4th continue to be available in their original CD incarnations, the CDs of Symphonies 5 & 6 have gone out-of-print recently. However, with this box set they are now deservedly restored to the catalog. Even better is the fact that the four 5CD box sets being reissued have been so reasonably priced. This Tchaikovsky set, and the ones of Dorati conducting Bartok, Paray conducting French music, and Hanson conducting a variety of American music, including his own compositions, have a total cost cheaper than the original single issue CDs! Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

Useful........1999-03-22

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

Brilliant disc--Melodiya era sound.......2007-06-23

I adore these two symphonies, which I first heard some time ago on an old Melodiya disc conducted by Svetlanov. Though written by a very inexperienced young man, he was also extremely talented, not to mention the fact that both were substantially revised later in life. Each work teems with great orchestration, melodies, and fascinating ideas--Antar more than Symphony No.1, perhaps, but even that early symphony displays more than its share of brillance (even when it occasionally sounds like one of Schumann's symphonies--esp. No.2 at times).

Now to this version. The most damning critique of this disc (as seen in the earlier review) is the sound. It's a bit dark and cavernous, which can be bad or good. Some detail is lost, but it reminds me of that glorious Melodiya sound which, to me, is extremely Russian. I like that feeling of depth around the music, which the orchestra has to fight to overcome. But make no mistake--this is a Russian orchestra, and they play this music brilliantly. I totally disagree that this is poorly interpreted; on the contrary, I think Anichanov and the St. Petersburg SSO gives a remarkable intepretation that, making allowances for the sound, is highly competitive. I have heard EVERY version of these symphonies, all of which are good; but where the new Svetlanov recordings for RCA (for example) are much slower and a bit less involved, Anichanov is fiery and passionate.

Symphony No.1 sounds brilliant here--a swift allegro that captures the elan of a young man writing his first symphony. I love the slow movement with its haunting, folk-like theme...it comes out great here, though it could use just a touch more power in the climax. The scherzo is great, though I wish I could hear the strings a bit more in the opening...but the finale is powerful and to me, really sets this version apart.

Anichanov uses an earlier revision of Antar (the second instead of the third, I think), which to me is the better version. It's more exotic sounding, and not so smooth around the edges. To compare, listen to Svetlanov's recent RCA version, where there are some substantial differnces. The St. Petersburg SSO makes this music sound enchanted and magical--great playing and a real sense of atmosphere. Here, I would argue, the sounds even heightens this effect--particularly in the second movement. If you don't know Antar, you're in luck, because it's perhaps his most colorful piece next to Scheherezade. Gorgeous melodies and immaculate orchestral colors...you see where Stravinsky, Scriabin, and Debussy came from here (indeed, Debussy was an admirer of Antar in particular). I think the orchestra really nails the moody, "Oriental" opening, which can sound too episodic in some hands (I love Zinman's version, but it doesn't sound very symphonic to me). The second movement has energy and drive, and the third movement contrasts the procession with the love music perfectly. The third movement is almost a mirror image of Grieg's "Arabian Dance" from Peer Gynt Suite No.2: it starts off with an "Arabian" procession, very colorful, and then subsides into an intimate love song. The true heart of the work is the last movement, though, with its incredible melody--perhaps the best he ever wrote. It's played beautifully here, and despite any other misgivings, it makes me return to this version more often than others.

So risk the sound, keep an open mind, and enjoy the performance. There are other versions out there, but this has strenghts that the others lack (and vice versa, to some degree). But bottom line, these are two of the most winning Russian symphonies, and no Rimsky-Korsakov library is complete without them.

Our Own Civil War (1861-1865) - Influence on Russia.......2001-09-20

Rimsky-Korsakov came from a Russian naval family. He graduated from the Naval Academy at St. Petersburg (then the capital of Russia) and went to sea where he visited New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. during our own Civil War. Symphony No. 1 was completed during this period and was performed for the first time New Year's Eve, 1865 to a warm reception. R-K was then 21 and this was the first performance of a full-fledged symphony by a Russian composer. The second symphony was completed in 1868. Both were amended subsequently, the first in 1884, the second in 1876.

On my Sony boombox, all the flavor of both pieces comes shining through and I can hear the popular, well-known "Scheherezade" foretold.

The recordings were done by the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra under the direction of André Anichanov. (Perhaps at some time in the future they can be rerecorded by the New York Philharmonic.) Naxos has done us a great service by releasing this beautiful material with such historic significance at such an attractive price. I have found solace and inspiration in this album in the days following 9/11/01.

burn the money instead........2001-09-06

Atrocious. Emphatically not a bargain - recorded in a defeating bass heavy bathroom acoustic so that most of the scoring details are lost, the interpretations are rudimentary to put it kindly, sounds like little more than sight-reading in places and the speeds in 'Antar' are cavalier and often just plain wrong, divesting the score of all of its magic. Avoid.

It's only snippets of the music!.......2006-02-12

This CD only contains 30-60 second long snippets of each of the pieces. It could be a teaching tool but is not something you can just put on to listen. It does contain reference to popular TV and Film works that contain the music.

These two admirably played budget discs conveniently gather the complete orchestral music of Borodin, and if you want any of it, you might as well have it all. The major works here are the Second Symphony, the Polovstian Dances from the opera Prince Igor, and the lovely tone poem In the Steppes of Central Asia. The "Notturno" is actually an arrangement of the famous slow movement from the Second String Quartet, while the Third Symphony, as with so much of Borodin's music, was destined to remain incomplete. Andrew Davis--not usually a conductor to set your pulse racing--conducts with genuine flair. --David Hurwitz

Of the all the great Russian musicians, Alexander Borodin is probably one of the least well known. Composing at the end of the 19th century, his name is not as well known as Tchaikovsky, Rubenstein, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, and Glazunov; maybe due to his lack of ballets or not having been the head of a major music school. Yet his music is every bit as melodic and beautiful. This multi-CD set contains possibly the best music composed by this genuis. COntaining all three of his symphonies, along with his Steppes in Central Asia and several other works, the music is very melodic, dramatic, evocative and rhythmic. Following in the footsteps of the great Russian Romanticism, this is some of the best classical music out there. The orchestration on these CD's are also wonderful, and the sound quality is flawless. I highly recommend this set to any classical music fan.

Perfect Borodin sampler..........2000-06-18

This CD has all of the great Borodin works, and unless you're really into Borodin, this should be the only CD you should have to buy. The Polovtsian dances was done how it should be. Of course then again would the New York Philharmoninc disappoint you? Steppes in Central Asia was so peacful and lovely, done ow it should be too. The Third Symphony, which I had never heard before, was surprisingly good! The First Symphony obviously wasn't completely Borodin's own; and after reading the booklet, I found this was true. Second Symphony was typical. I liked it and thought it was also a good recording. What's more...the CD is cheap...I mean 2 CDs! What's there not to like! Like most CDs, it's not perfect but it's pretty darn close.

Brass at its Best Ever........2005-10-22

A few years ago, I couldn't get enough of the Canadian Brass music. They were a delight to watch and to hear. They put so much spirit and talent into each performance, it was a wonder to behold. In this collection, there is a stirring Sousa grouping, Carnival of Venice, Pachelbel: Canon, and The Flight of the Bumblebees. It's a fantastic selection; they've recorded jazz and silly songs. For an obvious reason, the brass section is my favorite in any band or orchestra; two of my sons played the same trombone several years apart in the Pulaski school bands. Although Jeff, the flutist, was concertmaster his last year, I loved the way Zach and Justin mastered the trombone. Kenny's specialty was the trumpet (as was Chuck Southcott's), which shines through the brass section and is usually the star instrument.

These talented performers use comedy and fun to overshaow their fantastic performances. Hear them just once, and you will be hooked.

This album is the recording of the Canadian Brass's first collection. Very old one, and here's the memeber list: Bb Trumpet - Ron Romm, C trumpet - Fred Mills, Frech Horn - David Ohanian, Trombone - Gene Watss, Tuba - Chuck Daellanbach. This recording might seem boring, but the performance are so superb that you can hardly wait to listen to it again.
