Hundreds of compilation recordings have been thrust on the market in recent years on the theory that classical music makes a nice, non-threatening accompaniment to everything from working out to making love. And here we have one compilation promising to make your baby smarter. It's offensive enough that the music featured on these compilations is spliced up so that the most you hear of any work is a single movement; what's really annoying is the poor quality of so many of the featured performances. So it is some consolation that the artists here include such 20th-century legends as the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell and the Budapest String Quartet with Mieczyslaw Horszowski. Of course if these folks were alive, one can imagine their violent objection to this presentation of their work. --Gwendolyn Freed
Customer Reviews:
Build Baby's Brain through Classics Vol 1.......2006-07-25
I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though, and purchased a used set for my Grandson.
Wonderful stimulating music for baby.......2006-06-23
I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start.
Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational stimulation of a young mind is a powerful indicator that the child will be more advanced than the average child.
Music is not just notes played. Music--real music--is everything. Though the music of today will fade, classical music will always be around because it is classic. It fits no matter what era you place it in. There is always a home for it. The artists are timeless just as the beautiful melodies are.
I certainly believe that babies who listen to music will become more familiar with and more easily understand music and instruments. Therefore, they will be quicker of mind. It is just a fact that people who play instruments are usually of higher intelligence.
I don't think that people are destined to be stupid or geniuses. I believe it is a question of environment. I feel I'm a great mother but I haven't done everything I could have been doing to help my son's mind expand as an infant. Now that he is a toddler (18 months) I am teaching him to read and exposing him to the magic of classical music in hopes that it will help mold him and set him apart from the rest.
Minds are trainable. You just have to work at it. This CD compiled of beautiful pieces composed by instrumental geniuses will help you do just that.
The greatest CD!!.......2006-01-17
I received this CD free when I had my first baby and it instantly became my fav cd of all time. I have it on my computer and I had another copy made because I just can not imagine not having it.
And as for the comment that the music has nothing to do with intellingence, you stand alone on that front. Besides, what does it hurt? It's great, soothing music and the babies enjoy it.
Forget baby, it's mine?.......2005-09-01
I love my child, but the first time I heard this CD, It immediately went from her recorder to mine. I take it practically everywhere I go. I know it's technically "Her" CD, but the selections are so soothing; and you need that type of comfort when stuck in traffic. Honestly, we both enjoy it - and I'm glad someone thought enough to give it as a gift.
Love this CD--why all the complaints?.......2004-08-30
I'm not sure what people were expecting when they purchased this. For one thing it tells you exactly what is on the CD. Its not a mystery!! If you buy it on amazon it has listed every title on it so I"m not sure about the people who said they were dissapointed because they already own those titles. Obviously you should glance at the list of titles on this CD if you have a large classical collection already. However if you don't already have a classical collection this is by far excellent .I'll be honest and admit I listen to one of the volumes daily regardless of who is in the room. It's marketed for babies but it is really for anyone. There are SO many classical pieces out there. What they have done is to take the best of the best and also the ones that are known to appeal to babies. For some reason many reviewers thing they just took a random sampling of classical music. In reality they have put together those that appeal most to children. I can tell you that my 1 year old daughter actually dances to these. She really likes them a lot. I consider the whole collection a must have for any household.

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Interpretative solvency!.......2007-06-05
The main virtue of Emil Gilels as colossal pianist was always ironically his main failure: his extreme coldness. But when he played with the Amadeus quartet, something inside him seemed to bright with radiant intensity and his temperament showed us his Dionysian side, a remarkable and not precisely his main landmark.
This was successfully what it happened with this remarkable version of the celebrated Quintet Op 144 best known as "The trout". Filled of nostalgic reminiscences and genuine Viennese flavor, they conveyed us the own core of this work.
"The Death and the Maiden" is beautifully performed although I think no one has been able to surmount two insurmountable historical achievements of a recent past: the first version belongs to the famous ensemble Konzerthaus of Vienna of the middle fifties and the other is performed by the famous ensemble Chiringilian.
My favorite Trout version until this date: Horzowski and the Julliard ensemble, although I recognize the memorable versions of Paul Badura Skoda, Andras Schiff, Clifford Curzon, Rudolf Serkin and Arthur Schnabel.
Indelible.......2007-02-05
This is one of my favorite recordings. A reissue of recordings made by the Amadeus many years ago, these are wonderful interpretations of 2 of the most beautiful works in the chamber literature. The sound quality may not be quite up to that possible with modern recording technology but the quality of playing is superb.
Fair purchase.......2007-01-10
I think the price it's fair: the sound quality is not perfect, but the price is cheap and both Death and the Maiden and the Trout are enjoyable. For whoever is missing them and does not want to spend to much this is a fair purchase.
heart-rending beauty.......2006-11-03
Lovely, but sound quality of this reissue not tops. Wonderful as additional CD to compare with other interpretations. Ultimately I prefer the Emersons.
Two classics from 1958 and 1975, some fine and some not so fine moments.......2006-08-23
DG has brought together, now on their "The Originals" collection, two recordings dating from different periods of the Amadeus quartet's recording career: in 1958, then the very early days of stereo, they rerecorded Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" which they had already committed to mono LP in 1953 (now in an "Original Masters" DG box). The "Trout" Quintet, recorded in 1975 with Emil Gilels (with bassist Rainer Zepperitz), is their second go at the piece (the first was with Hebzibah Menuhin on EMI in 1958, reissued on CD by EMI and Testament) and dates from their later years; the Gilels and Amadeus quartet encounter was a purely studio affair which before this recording had resulted in the Brahms 1st piano quartet.
The great thing about the opening "allegro vivace" (taken with its repeat) in particular and the "Trout" quintet in general is that Gilels and his partners do not let their interpretation be colored by any pre-conception of a "gemütlich", e.g. easy-going and genial Schubert. On the contrary, they give full weight and impact to the accents and piquant perkiness to the staccato markings, resulting in a reading of great vigor and zest. Gilels proves a fine chamber player, with crisp playing and a fine sense of balance with his partners.
Not so great, on the other hand, is the well-known and distinctive feature of the Amadeus quartet: namely, Norbert Brainin's thin violin tone and sometimes pitch uncertainty, Martin Lovett's dry cello emission and Peter Schidlof's nasal viola. This is especially penalizing in the 2nd movement's deeply moving viola & cello cantilena (1:30), which doesn't approach the gripping lyricism which others impart to it. The 3rd movement's Presto is brisk (though not as brisk as Curzon-Wiener Oktett members) but string tone is somewhat shrill; fortunately (and unlike the afore-mentioned Curzon-Wiener) the pace is maintained in the central trio, consequently avoiding the usual mawkishness. In the 4th movement's "Trout" theme, the tempo is somewhere in between Curzon's lively briskness and Serkin's more sedate deliberation, and the ensuing variations maintain a reasonably acceptable unity of tempo, with a lively and carefree coda; but violin tone retains a not entirely pleasant edge of shrillness. The Finale is nicely brisk, forward-moving and carefree, reminiscent of Serkin and Marlboro friends from 1967. All things considered, despite the slight discomfort of the Amadeus' tone production, this is a fine version of Schubert's piano quintet. Now, for more choices of "Trouts" recorded since 1975, see my reviews of the Beaux Arts Trio (Philips), Brendel-Cleveland (Philips), Richter-Borodine (EMI), Ax-Ma and partners (Sony), Badura-Skoda (Amiata), Adès-Belcea (EMI) among others.
The "Death and the Maiden" is early stereo and the sound is somewhat dry, not as full as that afforded by Boston Skyline's transfer to the Fine Arts quartet from 1962 (with the same coupling - see my review), but it is still quite acceptable and with no audible tape-hiss. Interpretively, the opening "Allegro" a little more spacious and slightly less biting than the Amadeus' earlier mono attempt, with a tendency to be a little finicky on small details - and of course in much better sound. As before, the opening D triplets are taken legato rather than the written staccato and rushed headlong into; then ensues a reading that is vigorous and dogged rather than fast and furious; it commendably avoids any mawkish prettifying of the second, lyrical theme, which is given instead a fine rhythmic snap on its further developments, though not as biting as in the earlier version. As in 1953, the famous "Death and the Maiden" theme (2nd movement) is taken at a forward-moving pace, true to Schubert's "andante con moto" indication, and tempo relationships in the ensuing variations are more coherent than before, with less "gas and breaks"; Martin Lovett's cello voices a profound and moving chant in the 2nd variation, and the 3rd variation sounds like the heavy and powerful canter of warhorses rather than like Death furiously whipping its steed. Where this 1958 remake varies most from its 1953 predecessor is in the Scherzo and Finale, where the Amadeuses now go for power and weight more than rage and fury, but the Scherzo's middle trio maintains a laudable unity of tempo and displays charm without mawkishness. Likewise the "Presto" Finale is more deliberate than five years before and elicits less of the sense of a race to the abyss - more of an unhurried - but inexorable? - canter.
One can think of more gripping "Death and the Maiden" quartets (see my reviews of the Hollywood Quartet-Testament, Juilliard-Testament, Alban Berg Quartet-EMI, Brodsky-Teldec, Petersen-Capriccio among others) but this one has nonetheless something of a classic poise.

Customer Reviews:
inspired performance !!!.......2001-09-02
this collection deserves more than 5 stars.peter maag and the philharmonica hungarica are in top form.this is the best ever of schubert's fifth and eigth i have ever listened to.it is not karl bohm or leonard bernstein or george szell or lorin maazel.
truly the hungarians inspired by maag easily beat all the other top orchestras.
the orchestral texture is transparent with a perfect balance among the string sections ,the woodwind and the brass sections.peter maag obviously loves this music and brings out the heavenly beauty ,the pathos and the monumental dramatic quality of these works.
just listen to schubert's fifth second movement which ends with a heart rending cello phrase.
it is a shame that the well established record companies have not thought it fit to record more of peter maag.in my opinion he is one of the greatest ever conductors.
i will not exchange these performances for any other!

My 3 yr old loves it!.......2007-03-17
This is one of my three year old's top requests for listening. She simply loves it; She hums along and can name most of the songs. I am vey pleased.
My baby loves this CD!.......2006-11-05
Of all the many CDs we were given, this is my baby's favorite. Unlike most CDs of classical music for babies, this isn't just smooth, soft music. It does have some of that, but it also has more exciting pieces like the bouncy Nutcracker music, The Flight of the Bumble Bee, and The Sabre Dance. My baby bounces and dances to this music happily. And once she's a bit older, I'm sure she's going to love "Peter the Wolf," narrated by Jack Lemmon.
A Reasonable Collection.......2004-08-11
This is a reasonable selection of works to start with as a child's introduction to Classical music. There are two main flaws - a handful of the pieces are performed rather poorly and the sound quality is muffled. But keeping the intended audience in mind and the price, it's not a bad value.

A classic "Trout" (and a not so convincing clarinet quintet).......2006-10-29
Rudolf Serkin's 1967 recording of Schubert's "Trout" quintet from Marlboro has enjoyed since it appeared the status of an all-time classic - and it is easy to understand why: it is a muscular and lively approach, rather broad in the opening allegro vivace, rather brisk in the ensuing "Andante", but always alive to the numerous accents written by Schubert and all the minute details of phrasing and articulation of the score. Serkin's dry tone, clarity of articulation, sparse pedalling and willingness to strike chords as whiplashes rather than as thunderclaps are true to score and particularly effective, and his partners are on the same wavelength. Jaime Laredo, Philip Naegele and Leslie Parnas' gorgeous violin, viola and cello tone produces a profound lyricism in the first movement's violin and cello exchange at 1:50 as well as in the viola and cello cantilena at 1:24 in the second movement. The scherzo (3rd movement) has plenty of bounce and the musicians maintain a commendable unity of tempo in the trio section, imparting it a merry atmosphere. The Finale is the crowning achievement of this recording, with its irresistible, forward-going boisterousness.
Only in the 4th movement, the famous theme and variations from which the quintet derives its name, do I find Serkin and partners' deliberate tempo questionable: it lends a somewhat plaintive, almost maudlin tone to the theme and first two variations - but it is true the accompanying cricket also enhances their pastoral nature! I find here Curzon's livelier, more carefree approach preferable and more suited to the spirit of the piece, in an otherwise not so excellent version. It is also amusing to note that in the recording made two years earlier for Vanguard by Rudolf's son Peter (then 18 years-old), the string band led by veteran Alexander Schneider from the Budapest Quartet (and other associate of the Marlboro festival) adopted the same tempo in their enunciation of the "Trout" theme (see my review). It must have run in the family. The next two variations display a Beethovenian power which, impressive as it is, may not be particularly suited to Schubert, but the lively and light-hearted coda felicitously rounds up the movement.
Despite these reservations this is, indeed, a classic for the ages. The Mozart clarinet quintet that shares the disc, recorded in 1968, is not on the same plane, unfortunately. Harold Wright's clarinet tone is undistinguished, 1st fiddler Alexander Schneider's instrument is given undue prominence by the recording process and has some sour passages in the Menuetto's first trio. In general the sound lacks brilliance and the string ensemble disagreeably sounds as four individuals rather than as an integrated whole. The opening Allegro is taken at a lazy tempo, and the finale with variations displays a kind of pedestrian bonhomie. The Larghetto, though, taken at an animated tempo true to Mozart's indication, is tender and finely nuanced.
Sadly, an old favorite dims.......2006-01-01
I'm doubly glad that Sony released an excellent "Trout" Quintet led by Emmanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma, because this old favorite has lost its luster. The performance from a live Marlboro Festival concert in 1967 is full of lovely things, particularly the limpid, alert pianism of Rudolf Serkin. But ensemble is fairly slapdash, the string players are often on their own, and the microphone catches Jaime Laredo's violin much too close--at times this sounds like a duet for violin and piano. The cricket who sings along with the Trout variations is charming. I'll have to keep that as a memory.
A year later the eminent clarinetist Harold Wright went into the studio with some Marlboro regulars to perform the Mozart Clarinet Quintet. Despite the far better sound and the excellent musicians involved, this is a dull, sometimes listless reading, totally lacking in verve and Mozartean charm. All in all, a miss.
Doesn't do anything for me.......2005-10-15
It's hard to explain why I didn't like this CD. Much of the first movement of the Trout sounded to me just like a bunch of notes not going anywhere, not really connected much with each other. The first movement of the quintet was better, but lifeless, mechanical to my ear.
I'm almost embarrassed I don't like this CD. I listened to the first movement of each piece, and that's all I could take. I'm not an expert, but I do listen to a lot of classical music, and I do like Schubert and Mozart. Many performances of classical music I find quite moving. These two didn't move me at all.
GO FOR RICHTER WITH BORODIN QUARTET!!!.......2005-08-01
The Trout here is quite pedestrian. The music does not flow together in a seamless manner and the individuals seem to be waiting for one another in some places and worse still seem to be on their own in a few other places!Individually they may be top musicians but together they just do not deliver. My Top choice for the Trout is the the one by RICHTER AND THE BORODIN QUARTET on the EMI RED LINE Label which unfortunately is absent in this site (or even Elsewhere!).This TROUT seems to be a born SWIMMER!Marvellous playing by the great SVIATOSLAV Richter and the Borodins!Right from the opening bar one is simply hooked by the great drama-Tender Melancholy one moment,Joyous Elan and springy rhythm to go along. This Trout swims adroitly!Three minutes into the Fourth Movement is a most Magical moment. The Piano goes absolutely Berserk as if THERE IS SOMETHING VERY URGENT and some CATCHING UP TO DO!The Strings join in the melee!
Breathtaking! There is no doubt that Richter was always a Tremendous Schubert Player and it shows here! The Borodins are a very accomplished group and together they fashion a marvellous Trout.I also recommend the DVORAK Quintet by the same unbeatable combination.Another marvel of a performance.
Just to cap it all, imagine my surprise when a Local Music Shop in Chennai,India suddenly featured this CD TROUT CD for a mere 7 Dollars!I gleefully grabbed it!I Strongly recommend that you search for this rare Treasure and make it your own.I wish Amazon takes note and offers it on their site. This CD also features a great WANDERER FANTASY by RICHTER>
The Mozart's great too.......2004-02-08
The Schubert is a terrific blend of energy and intellect. But this version of the Mozart Clarinet Quintet has a timeless quality and poignancy. This is due to Mr. Wright's exceptional yet understated expressiveness and the amazing ensemble of the quartet. Highly recommended.

Schubert's deservedly famous and frequently performed "Trout" Quintet, for piano and string quartet (with a double bass instead of second violin), gets a musically virtuosic and sonically sumptuous reading here, performed with exceptional ensemble skill and brilliant solo pianism. The sound is vibrant and so realistic you'll think the performers are in the room with you. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
To each his own.......2000-09-27
In contrast with the reviewer who gave this wonderful recording 2 stars, citing its speed as a liability, I love this recording both for its speed and for its bright and beautiful sound. I have 4 or 5 recordings of this piece, including the AAM recording recommended by that same reviewer. This recording finds its way into my CD player more often than any other. So, to each his own. If you love the beautiful TELARC sound, then for heaven's sake, buy this recording. And by the way, the Rosamunde quartet is exquisitely played.
Great music, so-so interpretation.......2000-08-12
Schubert's Trout Quintet is simply an exquisite, delicately lyrical work of art. Anyone seeking to expand their collection of chamber music must own this piece. There are, however, better recordings than this one. I bought this CD after being so pleased with the Cleveland Quartet's rendition of the quartets of Beethoven. The Cleveland Quartet excels at playing clean, fast, goal-oriented music. They are not a period performance group, but they still play with controlled vibrato and lively tempos. Unfortunately, the Cleveland Quartet's strengths-- which make their Beethoven quartets so wonderful-- become weaknesses when they are playing Schubert. Schubert's chamber music requires a little more time to breathe than the Cleveland Quartet gives to it. They tend to rush the lyrical passages, giving the work sharp edges. Because they are not a period group and do not benefit from the softness of playing on gut strings, the sharpness of their interpretation is more accented and jarring. As a result, Schubert's music looses much of its bubbly beauty. By all means, you should have a recording of this work, but try instead the recording done by The Academy of Ancient Music Chamber Ensemble. This recording features Steven Lubin on the fortepiano and is available either as a single disk with six of Schubert's Lieder, or on a two disk set with other chamber music of Schubert, including his Octet.

Top-rate prformance of the Trout Quintet and very good performance of the string quartet, too.......2006-11-20
James Levine and the string players who perform the "Trout Quintet" do an excellent job at interpreting this work and getting though it without virtually any rough spots. (The only reason there would be is because it is a very hard work.) The quintet is a top Schubert chamber music piece. Different movements in the work contain sections of (vastly) contrasting characteristics and emotions, but it blends together very nicely to make a great (but, again, challenging) piece. String quartet #14, "Death and the maiden" is also a favorite Schubert piece and in this performance, the Melos Quartet displays their virtuousity as a great group. The recording quality is great, and the price is also excellent. If you buy this, you will be very happy that you did.
