Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Though a well-publicized marriage did much to raise his celebrity profile, Guy "Mr. Madonna" Ritchie's claim as one of the world's most promising young filmmakers was already secure. Extending the gambit he began on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, the English director's handpicked collection of pop songs for his jewel heist romp Snatch is a dizzying delight that eschews era and genre concerns in favor of flavorful character and loopy fun. Though his musical sense is one of the elements that have inspired Tarantino comparisons, Ritchie is clearly a league of one here. With a little fresh input from musical ally Klint, this anthology score ranges from the electro club mixes of Overseer and Mirwais to the vintage R&B workouts of Maceo Parker, Huey "Piano" Smith, and Bobby Byrd, with some pop kitsch of the 1970s (Johnston Brothers' "Hernando's Hideaway") and '80s (the missus's "Lucky Star") to keep the proceedings ever fresh and askew. Ritchie's pop choices are no less inspired, from Oasis and Massive Attack to the Specials' classic, "Ghost Town," and The Stranglers' own underrated jewel, "Golden Brown." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Bruce's Review.......2007-02-02

Some of the tracks were somewhat disturbing so I skipped them when I recorded this album from CD to cassette. Overall, the tracks were eclectic and energetic. Listening to them definitely reminded me of specific scenes from the movie, which I own on VHS format. Down with digital and up with analog!

5 out of 5 stars More than a Soundtrack.......2007-01-05

Not typically a fan of soundtracks. This one is awesome! Great collection of songs with great choice of dialogue mixed in. Listen to this one all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars One more time..........2006-07-01

I have watched this movie so many times, and it is still great. I love Guy Richie's creactivity. An all star cast mixed with a great plot and that sly under the door humor make all much better than your normal hit man comedy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-02-25

I mainly bought this to get the Mirwais - Disco Science track, but the whole cd is good. If you love the movie, you'll definately enjoy the cd.

5 out of 5 stars It works in so many circumstances!.......2006-01-16

What a great soundtrack! For me, the soundtrack is the make or break point in some movies. In Snatch, it just enhanced the coolness of the movie. Dennis Farina was magnificent, and the sound clips of him are great on the CD.
There are many highlights. "Supermoves" by Overseer is a very in your face, distorted techno track. Works great on an expressway of some sort.
"Cross the Tracks" by Maceo and the Macks is the best song on the CD, nuff said. Really funky groove, adequate vocals, great backup instruments.
"Disco Science" has a nice throbbing bass throughout, and it culminates with musical insanity. Great.
The instrumental "F*cking in the Bushes" by Oasis worked great in that fight scene.
"Lucky Star" by Madonna... whipped. JK. I guiltily enjoyed this.
"Don't you just know it", the last track, was a superb way to round out the soundtrack, and the whole movie for that matter.
What else can I say? BUY IT!!!

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch.......2007-06-26

The combination of music, narration and vocals make this CD the best example of AMND that I know of.

5 out of 5 stars Musically Perfect Shakespeare.......2007-05-22

Mendelssohn as a child was very much immersed in the literature of Shakespeare. Growing up the child of wealthy parents this musical genius had little to worry him through his life, and that left him to focus on his music. At the age of only 17 (in 1826) he completed an overture to the play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Shakespeare, and it wasn't until another 16 years later that the incidental music was written, but this is little matter as the entire thing flows together so well.

Judi Dench here (known for her role as M in James Bond movies) narrates the select passages out of Shakespeare before and after the musical selections. Her performances here are flawless, wonderful interpretations of the Shakespeare that allow the idea of each scene of the play to come out and wrap around your head so that when you listen to the corresponding incidental music you are touched to the level which Mendelssohn has united the two.

The Boston Symphony's performance is equally as amazing headed by Seiji Ozawa. He leads the orchestra in an approach that is taken with a very light touch at times and almost seems not to exist, especially where it touches with Judi Dench's narration and you find yourself lost in a forest wood in Midsummer with Lysander and Hermia. One could easily imagine sitting in the audience of a theatre of a performance of Shakespeare listening to this music and agree that it is entirely in character. The beautiful singing of Kathleen Battle and Frederica Von Stade as the fairies complete the effect as their voices sing sweetly up the register very truly in what would be a fairy voice which further aides to the setting and perfection of this album.

This album is beautifully recorded and the sound is clear as one has come to expect from the Deutsche Grammaphon label. Add to that the flawless beauty of this performance and the fact that this disc actually has the overture and all the incindental music that Mendelssohn wrote, one would be hard pressed to find a better album for this Shakespeare play. It is a must have for any Mendelssohn fan and is equally vital to any Shakespeare buff's collection, and if you're neither, I say get it anyway because it is just that gorgeous, and has also a very cheery effect upon the soul.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-16

Felix Mendelssohn(1809-1847) was brought up in an intellectual environment thoroughly immersed in Shakepeare. His Grandfather Moses Mendelssohn had made some translations that included an excellent version of Hamlet's "To be or not to be", and his son Abraham, in turn, introduced Shakespeare to his own precocious Fanny and Felix, who used to give little domestic performances in their house.
It is no wonder then, that at age 17, already an experienced composer with literary sensibilities, Felix would have wanted to set his own ideas to music. On August 6, 1826, he completed an overture, that was intended as a distillation into sonata form of the play's imaginative content. Even at this age Mendelssohn's Romantic instinct is to reconcile literary impressions with abstract musical structures, and the outcome is a musical portrait of the play's meaning into sonata form.
When , in August 1843, he was commissioned by the King of Prussia to write incidental music for the play, he found that much of his previous overture could remain and heighten particular moments. The performance of the work took place in Potsdam on October 14,1843, and was such a success that it passed through Europe as being one of the finest pieces of music ever written to accompany spoken drama!
Seiji Ozawa has , in my opinion, cast three very excellent women for the roles singing/speaking in this production: Kathleen Battle with her smooth effortless & flowing soprano as the lst Fairy; Frederica von Stade with her very vibrant and dramatic tone quality as the 2nd Fairy, and who but the ever-marvelous Judi Dench, her voice laden with all kinds of nuances and varied intensities.
The Tanglewood Festival Chorus has a lovely ethereal quality, which is very suitable for this other-worldly tale, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra needs no applause!!!!I enjoyed this disc tremendously, and will continue to play it for many years.

4 out of 5 stars A Midsummer Night's Dream CD.......2007-02-10

The music is lovely. However, the listing of songs has absolutely nothing to do with the way the are in fact recorded. Most annoying.

5 out of 5 stars A splendid and rewarding performance.......2007-01-30

I normally am not enthusiastic about anything put forth by Ozawa, so I was pleasantly surprised by the warmly appealing recording of Mendelssohn's complete incidental music, music which is not nearly recorded or performed often enough. Much of the credit has to go to von Stade and Battle, as well as Judi Dench, who avoids slipping into an overly cloying narrative, as often happens.

Well-recorded & well-presented; a very rewarding performance in all respects!

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel's beautiful voice........2007-05-13

Bryn Terfel has a beautiful voice. Listening to him is very pleasant and definitely something to look forward to. I read a review saying he would replace tenor Pavroti. However, I believe that Mr. Terfel is a Baritone and not a Tenor. That does not detract from the fact that he should be considered one of the world's top male singers. His voice is truly impressive. This CD by Bryn Terfel is one from our collection that is outstanding and a favorite.

1 out of 5 stars Why do people think this guy can sing??.......2007-04-27

Sorry, I think this guy is one of the most overrated singers out there today. He always sounds like he is singing holding his nose shut. VERY nasal sounding.

If you want to listen to an incredibly beautiful voice, buy one of Josh Groban's CD's--you won't regret it! He has the voice of the century!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing.......2007-02-03

Excellent selection of music. It covers many different types. My wife likes being able to hear the words with out instruments drowning out the vocals. I find it relaxing and many of the songs are familiar and very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel's Simple Gifts.......2006-02-25

Simply superb. I don't know what our local (Wash DC) paper was talking about when they said Deep River was the weakest link. I was enthralled from beginning to end. I have had the pleasure of hearing Bryn Terfel live in recital at the Kennedy Center. I can assure you that his voice has only improved with age. He was wonderful then and is spectacular now!

5 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15

Bryn Terfel harkens back to earlier American operatic stars such as Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill who crossed grenres to satisfy their unquenchable need to sing any and all songs that moved them to an appreciative public. These great singers all had their origins singing sacred music from their respective religions and learned to lay their considerable talents before the altar of the simple inspirational song.

This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.

Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.

I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.

This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful songs.......2003-02-07

If you're a Sondheim ballad fan, this a must-have. While there are a few renditions that aren't great (Not a Day Goes By is way overdone), the selections from Follies sung by Barbara Cook are outstanding. The Cleo Laine version of "Send in the Clowns" is lovely and Stephen Collins does an amazing good job on "Sorry-Grateful" from Company. Still, it's the Follies songs that truly shine!

5 out of 5 stars Fellini + Rota = Magic.......2006-10-31

Orchestrated and conducted by Derek Wadsworth and performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the scores on the CD "Fellini Rota: Music from the Classic Films of Federico Fellini" are marvelous and unforgettable and I am never tired of listening to them. The CD is one of the favorites in my collection.

Rota's melodies have everything in them: Italy's shining sun, her blue sky, the sound of her sea. They've got ancient wisdom of Rome and eternal innocence of a child. They are in Cabiria's smile, Gradisca's walk, Anita's fountain, Juliet's quiet loneliness, it the songs of Gelsomina's trumpet, in La Saraghina's lurid dance on the beach. Rota filled his tunes with beauty, poetry, romance, longing, regrets and dreams that may never come true but they are beautiful dreams anyway. Sweet and melodical, gentle and rhythmical, kind and lovely, they keep playing after the films are over, all characters disappear from the screen and what is left behind is "a little orchestra of Hope with Love as its conductor". The last that we hear in is the magic music of Rota, bringing affirmation, hope and love.

5 out of 5 stars "two legends of film & music ~ Fellini - Rota!".......2005-06-26

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (The Czech Symphony Orchestra) performs the gems by composer Nino Rota for the films of Federico Fellini...scores are orchestrated and conducted by Derek Wadsworth and recorded at FHS studios, Prague on February 1993...Silva Screens latest reissue release "SYMPHONIC: FELLINI-ROTA", has all the romantic and poetic scores from the classic films of Fellini...as Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbidding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.

1979 - PROVA D'ORCHESTRA (Orchestra Rehearsal) (Baldwin Baas/Clara Colisomo/Elizabeth Labi/Claudio Ciocca)

Nino Rota's tapestry is fine and the weave is just right...one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen...Rota's music was a large part of the picture...as you sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail...you know right then and there why music is so important for any film.

Silva Screen Records Ltd., Nic Raine(producer), Reynold da Silva(executive producers) James Fitzpatrick(project director), Yusuf Gandhi and Cherie Mathisen(album co-ordinators)...please stand up and take a bow for the rare gems you've given us...heads up for all "film-score-buffs" worth their salt, this is a keeper...and a big thank you to NINO ROTA (1911-1979)for sharing the legacy of his music with the world.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars essence of Fellini..........2007-05-09

As evocative as any perfume, this CD brings forth clear images of the films for which this music was written. Makes a charming background for any party, seemingly brainless fun, yet sophisticated and delightful. Also good to cook to...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-04-22

For this release, Silva Screen released their previous disc of Music from Fellini films, along with the best tracks from Nic Raine's 1998 recording of the complete score of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Paul Bateman's 2001 Godfather Trilogy disc, along with a few new tracks and other tracks from Silva's back catalog of music.

The last two tracks of the first disc, and the entire second disc is devoted to Fellini Films. All of the Fellini tracks are from 1993's "Music From Fellini Films", with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic (then credited as the Czech Symphony), with the exception of "Toby Dammit" which was recorded for this disc with Mario Klemens conducted.

"The Taming of the Shrew" is from Silva Screen's successful 2001 "Shakespeare at the Movies" set, while Death On The Nile and the Glass Mountain have been newly recorded for this set.

In conclusion, if you had the first disc of Rota/Fellini music then perhaps this would not be worth it, but overall this is a superb collection with that previous release in its entirely (remastered in HDCD surround sound, I might add), along with the best tracks from the Godfather Trilogy and Romeo and Juliet, with some more films sprinkled about, its a must-have, for anyone who wants a taste of Rota for less than $25.

5 out of 5 stars "premier composer of Italy (1911-1979) ~ Nino Rota".......2003-08-26

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra performs the gems by composer Nino Rota, conducted by Derek Wadsworth, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Mario Klemens. This latest release "The Essential Nino Rota Film Music Collection", has all the romantic and poetic scores ever conceived. Rota's music remains in your mind with haunting and forbiding themes that will stay with you the rest of your days.

Rota has the ability to capture the moments from each cue in his scores with "THE TAMING OF THE SHREW", "THE GLASS MOUNTAIN", "LA DOLCE VITA" and "ROMEO & JULIET, the tapestry is fine and the weave is just right. That's just for starters, listen and recall the score from "THE GODFATHER" and "THE GODFATHER II", one only has to close your eyes and visualize the characters that came to life on the big screen, the music from Rota was a large part of this. And Disc Two with "THE NIGHTS OF CABIRIA", "AMARCORD" and "LA STRADA", can sit back and soak up each passage and counterparts that prevail.

Silva Screen Records and James Fitzpatrick (producer), please stand up and take a bow for the well deserved rare gems you've given us. This can only be one of the most sought after collections complete in every detail for any "film-score-buff" worth his salt. As you listen to this CD, you can visualize each scene the cue is recalling. And speaking for one and all movie music collectors----this is a keeper!
