Customer Reviews:
CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.
Do not Buy.......2007-02-21
I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Customer Reviews:
Worth acquiring at any price.......2007-02-23
Some say Haydn's ingenuity is even greater than that of Mozart's or Beethoven's. When listening to this brilliantly played set, I find myself becoming a convert of the belief. Haydn experimented with a variety of musical tools in these works. Surprising twists and turns are abundant. You will hear chamber serenade, harpsichord run, or violin solo in the most unexpected spots. Instruments are sometimes played in very unconventional ways resulting in exotic sounds - similar to what Berlioz and Mahler did later. Structure is toyed with in many symphonies, especially in the early ones.
In Austro-Hungrarian Orchestra, Adam Fischer finds an all-in chef's toolkit needed to cook these delightful ingredients. The woodwinds not only sing but also coo and meow. Strings melt your heart to a puddle with their exquisite pianissimo. Horns are expressive yet stylish. The whole orchestra knows how to knock themselves out when the music calls for it. The overall timbre is unlike any other orchestra I've ever heard, period or conventional. It's bright, edgy and folksy at the same time. It sounds like a virtuosic chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra except in the big symphonies. I believe the closest thing to their sound is Vienna Philharmonic playing Johann Strauss waltzes. Throw in a hint of gypsy flavor then it would be even closer.
Because this is a massive 33-CD set, there are inevitably a few imperfections. In a handful of spots the strings are not perfectly together. Adding to this, some of the violins have very distinctive tones which don't blend well with others when the music gets energetic. As to the engineering, some of the symphonies recorded early in the cycle are captured with too much reverberation, especially some London symphonies which sound soft-edged. But let me assure you the vast majority of the 100 plus symphonies have been recorded with crystal-clear brilliance.
One may find more sophisticated and smooth playing in some conventional performances (Colin Davis and Jochum) or crisper articulations in some period recordings (Bruggen and Pinnock). But Fischer and his hand-picked orchestra deliver more character and expressiveness than in any Haydn performances I've ever heard. Harnoncourt comes close but Fischer's set has more smiles. And his orchestra has the devilish ability to accommodate any mood Haydn's score throws at them - whether it's charm, wit, panache, or pathos. Their playing in slow movements is simply inimitable.
This set will be the source of joy for many Haydn lovers whether they are beginners just opening up the treasure chest or seasoned collectors with many other Haydn CDs. According to others' opinions, it compares favorably to Dorati's box, the only other complete set which I have not heard.
One final point - I wrote the review without the consideration of the price. In other words, this set is worth acquiring at any price.
It started in school... .......2006-02-26
One of my students found this recording because we were playing No. 20 in our orchestra class, and she wanted to hear it. Turns out to be quite a well-played and cleanly recorded cd, but to get to No. 20 one must also buy Nos. 1-19. It appears that this is one of a five-volume set of box sets comprising all of Papa Haydn's symphonic output. It's enjoyable, but I would have been happier if buying Nos. 15-20 had been an option.
A wonderful collection.......2000-03-29
This is the first volume in an 8 volume collection. You will have to wait until 10/2000 and 10/2001 for volumes 5 and 2 respectively. But it will be worth it! These discs are recent recordings and are full digital. The performances are very well done. I started my collection of Haydn symphonies here and will definitely finish out the set.

Good Music, Not A Good Value.......2003-08-05
When I first got into classical music, purchasing all of Haydn's Symphonies seemed like a monumental, if not impossible task. I simply couldn't afford something as grand as the Dorati Complete Haydn Symphonies Box Set. With so many choices available for the "Paris" Symphonies up through the "London" Symphonies, I have had a great time purchasing and comparing interpretations by various conductors. (I have written Amazon reviews for CDs I own by Ansermet, Bernstein, Dorati, Furtwangler, Klemperer, Monteux, Szell, and Walter, and I also own titles by Beecham, Davis, Fricsay, Jochum, Karajan, and Kempe among others.) However, if you are looking for Haydn pre-Symphony No. 82, your choices diminish drastically.
For the most part I have used the Naxos label in order to get Haydn's Symphonies Nos. 1 - 82, and I am now the proud owner of more than a dozen of those titles (see my reviews). To break up the monotony, and to give period-instrument performances a shot, I decided to purchase the Trevor Pinnock "Strum und Drang" Symphonies box set on DG/Archiv and some of the Roy Goodman and the Hanover Band titles (including this one of Symphonies Nos. 1 - 5) on Helios/Hyperion. The performances are all very good, but the only problem I have with the Goodman-Helios discs is that they are priced at mid-line, while both the Naxos titles and the Pinnock set offer digital recordings at a budget price. It seems that Goodman is working his way towards a cycle, and when he does record all 100+ Haydn Symphonies, hopefully he will remember to take a page out of Adam Fischer's book. Helios/Hyperion will need to release Goodman's complete cycle at a budget price or they may not have many buyers.

Exploring the Haydn Symphonies -- Nos. 1 -- 5.......2006-02-21
I have recently been listening to Haydn's final set of symphonies, the "London" symphonies, comoposed in the 1790s, in a performance by Sir Colin Davis and the Royal Concertgebouw. I thought it appropriate to turn from Haydn's works of consummate mastery in the symphonic form to some of his earliest -- symphonies 1-5. This comparison of Haydn's latest with his earliest symphonies gives an excellent overview of the distance in which Haydn took the form over a compositional career of nearly 40 years, beginning when the composer was a young man of about 25. The early symphonies in this compilation are performed idiomatically and well by the Sinfonia Finlandia, a small chamber ensemble, under the direction of Patrick Gallois. This CD is part of the ongoing Naxos recording of the complete cycle of Haydn symphonies, featuring many different ensembles and conductors. It constitutes a fine introduction to early Haydn.
The traditional numbering of Haydn's symphonies is not always an accurate guide to their chronology but at least 4 of the 5 works on this CD date from Haydn's earliest period, i.e, prior to 1761. They are lightly scored for strings, horns, oboes, continuo (a harpsichord is used here). and a basson doubling the continuo.
Symphony No 1.in D major may indeed be Haydn's first symphony, although evidence points to what we now know as symphony no. 37 in C major as a strong competitor for that honor. Symphony no. 1 dates from 1759 and probably was written for Haydn's first patron, Count Morzin. It is in three movements and shows its origins in the fast-slow-fast style of the Italian overture. The spiritied opening movevment opens with an upwardly-rising crescendo figure similar to what was to become known as the "Mannheim crescendo". The slow movements in Haydn's early symphonies are generally moderately paced and use only the strings. This early symphony has a particularly lovely and extended slow movement with a walking theme over a tinkling continuo. The finale in a galant, skipping 3/8 tempo is lively, lyrical and short.
As is symphony no 1, Symphony no 4. in D major, is in the three movement fast-slow-fast pattern. It opens with a loud, energetic presto, but it also includes a second theme in a minor key. The second movement is a lovely early andante with a singing figure in the first violins placed over a slower line in the low strings and a syncopated accompaniment in the second violins. The finale is a sharply outlined, glittery minuet with the horns tooting in the background. The movement picks up force as it comes to a strong close.
Symphony no 2 in C major, is a short, three-movement chamber work of less than ten minutes. As does the first symphony, it opens with a loud ascending scale passage with horns playing a prominent role. There is a lyrical, contrasting second theme. The second movement is a brief andante for muted strings while the quick, lively finale is again in the early galant style.
Symphony no 5 in A major is a different type of work in that it is in four movements and includes a slow opening movement. This music has its background in the church sonata -- a form Haydn also used somewhat later in his "philosopher" symphony, (no. 22) and elsewhere. In the first movement the horns play an important role in developing the slow, solemn theme, and their is a prominent part later in the movement for the oboe. The second movement returns to the quick, galant style we have already heard in several of the other movements on this set. The minuet opens with a stacatto, loud theme in the strings with a great deal of solo work for both horn and oboe in the trio. The brief finale makes great use of contrasting soft and loud passages stating a theme in scales.
The final work, Symphony no 3 in G major, is slightly later than its companions and probably was composed in 1761. This is a four-movement work, already highly inventive, which makes great use of counterpoint throughout. The "Oxford Companion to Haydn" describes it as "among Haydn's most distinctive efforts". It opens with a lyrical first theme which becomes treated contrapuntally in passages between the violins and the horns. The second movement is in a minor key and features a theme divided between the violins together with a rolling figure in the continuo. The minuet is in the form of a canon, with the theme in the strings and the trio given to the winds. The short, lively finale is a fugue -- the first of many times that Haydn, and Mozart as well, would use detailed counterpoint in a finale.
The symphonies on this CD are a delight to hear in their own right. Lovers of Haydn and the classical symphony will also enjoy hearing these early works for the light they shed on how the symphony developed. Listeners wanting to explore Haydn's symphonies in detail might wish to consult the "Oxford Companion to Haydn" edited by David Wyn Jones and mentioned briefly above. This work's disucssion of "Symphony" summarizes the best of current scholarship regarding the multiple origins of symphonic form and includes an excellent treatment of Haydn's entire symphonic output. But beyond the scholarship, these works are to be enjoyed.

Fantastic!.......2005-11-29
I bought this cd set years ago and they're still my favorite cds. Each cd follows a genre (baroque, classical, romantic, or modern and impressionist) and gives a great sampling of some of the strongest pieces in that genre. I don't know what I'd do without these cds.
