A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20
If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.
Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25
Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Customer Reviews:
The beginnings of a genius.......2006-02-06
This album was Paul's first album for A & M and dates back to 1971. As well as a Japanese release, which can be hard to get hold of, it will now be released on 20th February 2006 in the UK on the East Central One record label.
After releasing an album, Someday Man, in 1969 on Reprise, this was the album which brought Paul to the notice of the listening public as well as fellow musicians, who began queuing up to record Paul's songs. This album of songs of love lost & found, highlighted both Paul's skills of his songsmith as well as a singer.
The album includes well known classics like An Old Fashioned Love Song, rejected by The Carpenters but brought to the attention of the listening world by 'Three Dog Night' and We've Only Just Begun recorded memorably by The Carpenters. This song, which started as a bank commercial, has forever been immortalised by Karen Carpenters voice and is now a favourite at weddings all over the world.
Although some may find Paul's voice an acquired taste, I feel that he is able to convey the feelings behind his songs with wonderful dramatic effect. This is a collection of 11 wonderful songs, produced superbly by Michael James Jackson.
The CD comes complete with a booklet with the lyrics of all the songs, so you can sing, and cry, along to your hearts desire
A great album and a timely release, as Paul continues to write for projects such as the stage mucial of Happy Days, which previews in February 2006 in the USA
An Old Fashioned Love Song.......2002-03-05
When I first heard this collection, I was halfway around the world in the Orient. I have thought many time of locating a copy on CD but never have pursued it till now. I feel this is a superior arrangement and is priceless to the true Paul Williams music fan. I look forward to ordering and listening to many more of Paul Williams arrangements.
So Many Memories of . . . ........2000-09-02
Listening to Just an Just an Old Fashion Love Song brought back many memories (good and not so good) of the times I listened to that album and many more in the early 70(s). I was thrilled to have found this CD because I had been looking for several years. Having been a fan of Paul for 30+ years, I'm actually joining The Official Paul Williams Fan Club, hoping to meet him some day. He is one of the most talented musicians in the World . . Years ago, someone asked him how it was working with Barbra Streisand on Evergreen. He said it was like having a picnic in the middle of a freeway. Looking forward to purchasing more Paul Williams CD(s). A Fan Forever . . Di
Paul Williams: An Excellent Artist.......2000-07-09
There is only one word to describe Paul William's music: extraordinary. It's no wonder why many recording artists of the late 1960's and early 1970's - The Carpenters, Three Dog Night, Helen Reddy, Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge, just to name a few - had chosen to record some of his songs.
Aside from his mastery of his musical medium, the piano, what sets Paul Williams's work apart is its uniqueness. Somewhat akin to Burt Bacharach's songs before him, many of Paul William's songs do not follow the usual three-chord patterns that are so common in popular songs. Listen to his songs for the first time and chances are you won't find it easy to predict which direction his songs will take you next.
Just when the listener begins to relax to the first few mellow bars of `You And Me Against The World', the music suddenly picks up in cadence and intensity without warning, beginning with "Remember when the circus came to town..." which is later repeated with "Life can be a circus, they underpay and overwork us..." It is this impulsive, neurotic unpredictability that makes some of Paul's songs so unique.
One would be at a loss to cite a better example to accurately describe the hopes and optimism experienced by many people just starting out life-shaping relationships, say a marriage. Paul William's "Sharing horizons that are new to us, watching the signs along the way..." in `We've Only Just Begun' is a good start. It is a song for people and couples looking forward to lasting and meaningful relationships.
`That's Enough For Me' is a masterpiece with its haunting lyrical and melodic quality, not to mention the superb guitar work. It is Paul revealing his soul in his most tender and vulnerable moment, finding solace in what love has to offer. One can't help but wish being in his shoes, content and serene, finding simple domestic pleasure and comfort just being with the loved one.
`Rainy Days and Mondays' perfectly describes the rut that modern man finds himself in while coping with the pressure of everyday life. `Waking Up Alone' is a tale of a wandering man who finally decides to come back to his hometown, only to discover how much he had missed and will be missing when he finds his old flame now happily married with a child of her own. And that is when cold reality strikes him: he is all alone. Graham Nash' `Simple Man' is a pleasant surprise, the only non-Paul Williams tune in this compilation. This tells us that even a sophisticated artist like Paul Williams can once in a while interpret another writer's piece - a very simple piece at that! - and make it sound his own.
`I Won't Last A Day Without You' tells us of Paul Wiiliam's willingness to "take all the madness the world has to give" as long as he has love. A pseudo critic friend of mine once told me that this kind of attitude - that is, the desire to exist only when in the company of one's object of affection - is itself a form of madness. Well, perhaps. But who says that love isn't blind?
This CD's liner has Paul Williams dedicating this body of work to the serious listener. Well, he proves once again that he is worth listening to.
Paul Williams has caught my ears and hopefully, yours too!
Paul williams - 28 years on!.......2000-06-10
I first heard this as an LP back in 73/74. I was living abroad at the time & my two best friends there had copies of it. I always reckoned I'd buy my own copy when I got back to the UK & settled down.
Once I got to the UK I started looking around for it but without success. In the meantime, my friends lost/damaged their copies through travelling round. About a year ago I heard one of the songs again on some obscure radio station (I never even got the station name) & I have been searching for a copy since. Am I looking forward to hearing those songs again? - I am counting the days. If I could only have one CD to my name - this would be the one! It's fantastic!

This One Is Good---But Not "The Best".......2006-09-12
Type the following into the search on Amazon to find the best English version of The Merry Widow: Léhar: The Land of Smiles; The Merry Widow; The Count of Luxembourg (Highlights)
Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ", September 11, 2006
The "best version" of the "Merry Widow" is NOT this one. The best version is the one with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved that rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note LOUDER than the chorus---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, the Bronhill CD is made in Holland and "there is one left", so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.
Joan Sutherland under the baton of Richard Bonynge.......2004-02-24
THE MERRY WIDOW, Franz Lehar's dizzying and delightful operetta chestnut, is given the grand treatment in this highlights album featuring Joan Sutherland.
There have been many widows (including June Bronhill, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills), though Joan Sutherland's WIDOW has always been especially grand. The supporting cast on this recording features Werner Krenn as Count Danilo with Valerie Masterson as Valencienne, Regina Resnik as Zo-Zo and John Brecknock as Camille, with Francis Egerton, John Fryatt, Graeme Ewer and the Ambrosian Singers.
Sutherland's performance as Hanna Glawari is full of masterful strokes and she approaches the score with a twinkle in her eye, aware of the comedy in the piece. Richard Bonynge conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and they are especially chill-inducing with the Overture.
All-in-all a superlative recording at a bargain price.
Performances better than the recording.......2004-01-18
Unfortunately this CD was made from the Australian TV tapeing of The Merry Widow, a shame that the microphones are not of high enough quality to capture the really fine performances, it is hard enough to understand what is being sung when properly recorded let alone when the equipment stinks, however if you enjoy Joan Southerland as much as I do you can overlook the flaws in the recording and just get carried away with the voice, it would be nice if a libretto had been included, a rarity today, that used to be common in the era of the LP

Quality music at a great price, this collection features 20 tracks including 'How Deep Is The Ocean', 'No Strings', 'Puttin' On The Ritz' & 'Heatwave'. The Swingles have, unusually, incorporated electric keyboards, horns and drums into their usually acappella approach, resulting in some thoroughly modern interpretations of Berlin's classics. Customer Reviews:
Doesn't work for me........2006-05-04
I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.

weak voices.......2006-01-21
I don,t need to write a book to tell you about this disc.I will leave that to the ones that write as if they are getting paid by the word.
Dont waste your money on this cd. There are a lot of singers on this cd. that dont have the voices and the range and richness to be singing this music. buy one with the best of the singers who sang in the stage productions.
LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST OF IN A SINGLE DISC.......2005-01-07
There are numerous compilations out on the market full of Lloyd Webber's music. As most people know, Lloyd Webber is the most successful musical composer of all time and many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. This is the compilation Lloyd Webber personally supervised and it is the best thing to have if you can't afford his five-CD compilation called "Now and forever", which was selected and supervised by him as well. You should bear in mind, however, that there are two compilations called Gold out there: This one is for the British and the European market. There is another one, issued later and digitally remastered, aimed at the American buyers and although some songs are repeated on both of them, they contain different songs or the same songs sung by different artists. Therefore you should check your favourites and buy accordingly, or, if you can, buy them both.
So here are my thoughts about the tracks in this one:
1. "Superstar" and "I don't know how to love him" are both from the concept album of "Jesus Christ Superstar". They sound wonderful as ever.
2. "Don't cry for me Argentina" is beautifully performed by Julie Covington, who was Evita at the 1976 concept album. She sounds like Madonna, only much better and the London philharmonics are the best orchestra ever used in this song. David Essex sings "Oh what a circus" with a strong voice, in my view, much better than Mandy Patinkin.
3. From "Tell me on a Sunday" we have "Take that look of your face" sung by Marti Webb. This studio version blends perfectly Marti's voice and the strong back vocals.
4."Memory" from "Cats" is probably the most famous of all Webber's songs, recorded by numerous artists. The one here is from the London cast recording, sung by Elaine Paige. I love Elaine's version very much, but this one is not the definite one. Her best rendition of this song, with the much matured voice, can be heard in "Cats" DVD or in her latest two-disc compilation, "Centre stage: The very best of Elaine Paige", issued in May 2004.
5. "Pie Jesu" is the best known song from Webber's "Requiem". Sarah Brightman is joined by a young boy soprano Paul Miles-Kingston in this solemn deliverance. Very pretty.
6. "The Phantom of the Opera" is represented by three songs in their single versions. In the song of the same title, we have Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley sounding very appropriate, although my favourite will always be the one with Sarah and Michael Crawford, which can be found on the American version of this compilation. Cliff Richard and Sarah sing the lovely ballad "All I ask of you" with passion, and Cliff has a wonderful warmth in his voice. Finally, Michael Crawford gives his unique and mesmerising interpretation in "The music of the night".
7. "Aspects of love" boast here with its top song, "Love changes everything", performed wonderfully by Michael Ball. It was his #1 hit and is probably one of the most beautiful love anthems ever written.
8. "The Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was Webber's first musical and the signature song "Any dream will do" is performed here by Jason Donovan with a youthful warmness. Wonderful pop piece.
9. For the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Webber wrote, together with his long-time lyricist Don Black, this next song, "Amigos para siempre or Friends for life". It's a nice duet between Sarah Brightman and Jose Carreras, their voices are a perfect fit. The melody itself is neat, especially when the orchestra takes the lead.
10. "Sunset Boulevard" is marked here with two songs. Barbra Streisand's powerful voice shines all the way through in "As if we never said goodbye"; it's a shame she never played Norma Desmond on Broadway, since Patti LuPone wasn't allowed to take her Norma to New York, and Glenn Close butchered the role. "The perfect year" is here in its single version, sung splendidly by Dina Carroll, and it sounds much better with this orchestration than in the show on stage.
11. As we approach the end, we have an Academy Award winner, that is, "You must love me" with Madonna, from the 1996 movie version of "Evita". This is another wonderful ballad with the haunting cello and piano solo. It just proves that Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were the best collaborators. They really should do another musical together.
12. The last two songs are from "Whistle down the wind". The first song has the same title and it's a pop single performed by Tina Arena. She has a really strong voice and the drums and guitars here are a well made combination. Boyzone's "No matter what" was a huge pop hit in the charts. Again, we have a song with the suitable orchestrations and vocals.
All in all, this CD is a must have for all the Webber fans. It works well as the background music or on the headphones. The booklet contains some pictures and an introductory text. The sound quality is excellent. Every song here really is a pure gold.
Webber's best.......2002-07-05
This CD is subtitled "The Definitive Hit Singles Collection." And that it is. Eighteen tracks include the best known Webber hits. Julie Covington does "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." If you haven't heard the other side of the Evita story, you need to hear David Essex's "Oh What a Circus," an answer to "Don't Cry . . ." Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley do "The Phantom of the Opera," and Michael Crawford does "The Music of the Night." Barbra Streisand does "As if We Never Said Goodbye," Michael Ball does "Love Changes Everything," Marti Webb does "Take That Look Off Your Face," and Madonna does "You Must Love Me." The rest of the album is not filler; is top notch Webber, truly a collection of hit singles.

Romantic Paradise.......2004-06-10
Andre Rieu's Romantic Paradise with selections including "The Godfather," "Strangers in Paradise,"The Rose," etc. is absolutely lovely. His violin brings out the best in these familiar songs. There is a second CD with the same title, with "Dances with Wolves" as the first selection, that will blow you away. I got mine in Europe. Hope it becomes available in the USA.

Customer Reviews:
Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28
This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!
Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.
That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)
The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.
Highly recommended.
