one 3rd of the greatest album of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-18
this is the 1st ever musical geniuses slow collection.it was designed by a scientist who recognized musics power on the mind and harnessed it.this album has been proven to stimulate the same part of the brain that relaxes you.or for you brainy types,it gets your dopamine flowing.then theres the fact that this music is like pure ear sweetness.it will send all your nuerons off to dreamland and you will feel a dramatic physical change.my favorite song on this one is the violin concerto.extremely relaxing and great for the soul.everybody with anything from a cramp to cancer should put this one on.besides all that, its exquisitely beautiful youll fall instantly in love!an abselute tresure and blessing to music and the world!
Music for concentration and focus.......2001-05-14
I first read the research on the positive effects of classical music at 60 beats per minute many years ago. With no commercial options available then, I made my own tape from excerpts of world class recordings I own, largely of Mozart. I rarely tolerate background music while I work because it distracts and diffuses focus. The slow Mozart movements have an astonishingly opposite and positive effect, enhancing concentration and mental clarity. For listening pleasure, I prefer the complete works with all movements, as a prior reviewer noted. However, for calmed focus and concentration, by removing the alternate movements this recording serves that purpose with excellence.
There is sufficient variety to avoid monotony, and while the musicianship will not garner critical acclaim it is competent and acceptable for the purpose of this recording. I enjoy it immensely. It is one of the rare pieces I will play in the background while doing work that requires serious focus.
good news, bad news.......2000-07-23
Good news: contains famous works of Mozart for a very small cost. The music is eloquent and perhaps stimulates the brain with the Mozart effect. It is definitly good to listen while commuting and stuck an a traffic jam.
Bad news: These music are so well known that to many, it feels redundant. These are not world-class performers or conductors, so the music doesn't have a new intereptation or anything out of the ordinary. Also, I tend to like to have the entire three (or four) movements of the song, not just one movement. And practically all of these songs are the slow movement so it gets redundant.
I would recommend this to any beginning listeners but for more experienced listners, try investing in a slightly more expensive but better performed recordings.

the last disc of 3.the greatest set in music history. .......2005-08-18
this is the last disc of the 3 disc set.its supposed to stimulate the creative juices.it gets your seritonin going like prozac.well,ok.but,anyway,its quite good.my favorite song on it just goes to show how inspirational the genius mozart was.he was alive in like 1770 and was dead by 30.he did this song and it was catchy.much later it was put to words with the tune still intact as "twinkle twinkle little star".so itll help the kids off to bed,but then someone else took the old indian created english alphabet and put it to music."the abc song" was also put to the same tune and now teaches millions of children to take thier 1st steps towards learning to read and write every day.it was also the very first recorded music when thomas edison 1st tested the phonograph sucessfully.its what he used.on this album thier are many fast paced[as fast as they get]songs that stimulate your brain.i dont personaly need any help in the creative department and just listen for the wonderful music.the twinkle twinkle little star song is like 12 minutes long and the performer uses mozarts innovative style to play it in literaly dozens of different ways.ballad, bedtime, frenzied, more notes, less notes, you name it!then theres a whole bunch of other great songs on it.if you call yourself a music lover and havent at least heard these songs, then you are sadly mistaken.a musical landmark!
Upbeat, but pleasant.......2002-02-02
I'm not the hugest classical afficianado, but this CD is very appealing. I bought the first in the series, Strengthen the Mind, and found mostly the same old crap on it that I had on three other Mozart CDs.
Not the case with this one. Very cool, very different. Not the stereotypical, cliche Mozart. Not good for reading to, but very good for chillin' or in the car.

thanks naxos.......2007-03-18
naxos has provided me with so much great music over the years at budget price, i want to thank the folks over there right up front. this is one of my very favorite naxos releases. i know next to nothing about the lute. never touched one, never seen one in person. how many strings are on the things, anyway? to the listener, i don't think that it really matters having such answers resolved. just listen. this is gorgeous, quiet music. perfect for late at night. the tone of the instrument combined with the atmospherics of the canadian church that this recording was made in is haunting on the ears. i listen to this disc over and over again. great stuff for reading to in the evening. thanks again, naxos.
Shining Late-Baroque Light.......2003-05-11
Weiss was a contemporary of Bach and it's been said they knew one another and, perhaps, even made music together at one time or another. The music on this disc is quite good and satisfies my craving for thoughtful music. I sometimes feel that music composed during the late Baroque period proper (right up until 1750, typically) is just too light and transparent. This cd dispels my own notions and for that I am grateful. One look at the price on this disc should further remove all doubts about a purchase. If you like music from the Baroque and/or fretted string instruments then get it now. A wonderful 6-dollar investment.
Mesmerizing!.......2002-01-28
The four albums (actually five if one includes the Hagen album) of Barto playing lute music by Weiss are truly mesmerizing. They cover the range of the Weiss's intricate compositions. I truly hope that the Naxos label keep bringing out additional recordings by this outstanding artist. The recording is warm and immediate. Highly recommended!
Outstanding voyage into the realm of the lute.......2002-01-03
If you are looking for a wonderful journey into the subtle beautiful world of the baroque lute you have found your ticket. Robert Barto demonstrates his skills with the lute. All his recordings come highly recommended.
Another Triumph.......2001-12-10
Robert Barto is doing every lute fan out there a great service by recording these works, and this, the fourth volume in the series, is another smashing success. He again chooses a nice selection of pieces that vary in key, mood and difficulty, and the overall effect is wonderful. The contrast between the intense, melancholic f-minor sonata and the other, "sunnier" works in A-major and C-major is quite striking. Barto again establishes himself as perhaps the leading interpreter of Weiss; as for Weiss, he can't seem to write a bad note!

More Sensational Stern, More Silly Sony.......2003-10-04
Volume 8 of the "Isaac Stern: A Life in Music" series finds the great violinist tackling a variety of French Orchestral Works. The first CD of this two-disc set begins with Lalo's "Symphonie Espagnole," 1967 performance with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Stern previously recorded the Lalo with Ormandy in 1956 (that version appears on "The Early Concerto Recordings, Volume 2" -- see my review), and this '67 rendition is taken at a slightly slower tempo, but is equally enjoyable. Disc one concludes with an average account of Saint-Saens' 3rd Violin Concerto with Daniel Barenboim and the Orchestre de Paris from 1976.
Disc two is where I really have problems with this collection. The second CD features shorter works for violin and orchestra, including some "encore" pieces, all performed excellently. I should know because I've heard half of them on other CDs previously! The very same recordings featured in this title (Volume 8) of Saraste's "Zigeunerweisen," Saint-Saens' "Introduction et Rodno Capriccioso," and Ravel's "Tzigane" have already been available (and continue to be) on Isaac Stern's "Early Concerto Recordings" volumes. This redundancy is not an isolated incident as it has happened with other titles in the "Life in Music" series. I suppose duplication is unavoidable for serious collectors, but it is nonetheless annoying. As I have said before -- Sony, there must have been a better way!

Ian Bostridge's second Schubert recital for EMI (which features a welcome number of the less familiar songs) is even more impressive than the first--and that's saying something. Much of the disc finds him in a somber mood, from the hymnlike tone of the first song, "Lied eines Schiffers an die Dioskuren" ("Sailor's Song to the Dioscuri"), via "Nachtstück" ("Nocturne") to "Wehmut" ("Melancholy"). But though the tone is frequently valedictory and the tempo often slow, there is never a lack of variety.
That is Bostridge's achievement as much as Schubert's--he has designed his program with great sensitivity, and his voice seems to have grown in soulfulness and depth (try "Abendstern"--"The Evening Star"--to hear how much he can wring out of such apparently simple lines) to be even more mellifluous than previously, cherishing each word and finding total accord with pianist Julius Drake. Bostridge delights, too, in the rare happier moments, such as two of the Goethe settings, "Geheimes" ("A Secret") and "Versunken" ("Rapt Absorption"), which explore the lighter side of love. The recording is beautifully lifelike, and the liner notes are excellent. This is the work of a supreme artist caught at the height of his powers. --Harriet Smith
Customer Reviews:
Like his voice.......2007-02-15
Several of the reviews I've read on this site concerning Ian Bostridge are by people conspicuously more knowledgeable than I. They voice serious reservations about his work and his voice (small). Still his Shone Mullerin is my favorite collection of lieder. Whether his voice is small or not doesn't make much difference, I'd imagine, in the recording studio, and I find it very beautiful.
Can we put the rapture in perspective?.......2005-10-28
People are allowed to love what they love, but many reviewers here claim that Bostridge is the best lieder singer since Fischer-Dieskau. That's true only if you discount, among others,

These are just the ones who've given us superlative Schubert and romatic lieder recitals on major labels since 1980 or so. I mean, it's one thing to advertize your enthusiasms, but it's another to claim your opinion as fact in the face of many, many great artists in this genre. Only after someone showed me how Bostridge excelled, or even equalled, these singers could I consider putting him up against legendary artists like F-D, Schwarzkopf, Hans Hotter, Imgaard Seefried, Julius Patzak, Kathleen Ferrier, Peter Pears...need one go on? A trendy favorite of the moment doesn't a master make. Personally, I find Bostridge an unappealing lieder singer, but if he one day gets added to the list of greats, I can accept that.
This post duplicates the one I wrote for the first volume of Bostridge's Schubert. I apologize if that offends some.
A REAL SUCCESS.......2002-10-09
This is Bostridge's second volume of "lieder" (i.e. musical settings of German romantic poems) by Schubert, and much of what I wrote in my review of his volume one applies equally here. These are wonderful songs by the greatest songwriter of all time, and Bostridge brings his usual beautiful tone and phrasing to each one of them. It would be pointlessly controversial to give any less than five stars.
The same reservations apply as before: Bostridge's voice is just too pure and lovely for some of Schubert's songs. However, it's fair to say that this later release is more successful than volume 1. In the earlier volume, he was courageously cutting heads with the greatest lieder-singers of all time on what could almost be called "Lieder's Greatest Hits". And it has to be said that for all his beauty of tone and phrasing, he has yet to develop the gravity or indeed the dramatic range and flexibility to put his name up there with the native German greats like Fischer-Dieskau, Prey, or more recently Baer and Quasthoff. In this latest volume, however, Bostridge has selected material that is more clearly suited to his terrific gifts - for the most part less well known but still outstanding compositions that involve less narrative and more reflection.
The experienced lieder aficionado who is attentive to the German lyrics may still find Bostridge's delivery insufficently deep in terms of both pitch and nuance. However, none of this is meant as negative criticism. Bostridge's glorious bel canto voice is one of the brightest lights in Britain's music industry. Lieder-singing is a highly specialised art-form in which even native German performers rarely reach their peak until middle age. And above all, this is a fine album in its own right - in fact one that most English speakers will actually find preferable to a more Teutonic and dramatic performance.
Even more beautiful than volume I.......2002-05-10
This album has a wonderful selection of songs that have a more subtle and beautiful effect than the first volume (and that is one of my very favorite albums!). His singing is beautiful and his artistry is even better. The songs aren't just sung. They are expressed so poetically it is like being in the middle of a magic spell being cast. Of course Mr. Drake's terrific playing adds so much to this recording. It isn't a singer with a pianist. It is two artists combining seamlessly to make the art come alive with a single vision.
I was fortunate to hear Mr. Bostridge and Mr. Drake perform several of these selections here in Ann Arbor. It was a wonderful recital and contained several songs that I hope get in a Volume III.
A Great Lieder Singer, with some unsuitable songs.......2002-05-09
There can be no doubtabout Bostridge's standing in the Lieder world - his recitals commonly sells out, even if he's performing relatively obscure material like Finzi.
Having first sampled him in the wonderful Schumann disc, buying this disc was a no-brainer. Bostridge lives up to my high expectations, singing with transcendental feeling; you know he's actually reliving the experience of the song, conveying the composer's thoughts instead of displaying his own vocal powers.
However, I'm not sure all the songs here are appropriately chosen - Bostridge has a very English tone, meaning a little short on power and size. Auflosung displayed this weakness - the tempo is too slow, the voice lacking in power and grandeur to project the song's intensity - just compare it to the intense Fassbaender / Johnson Hyperion recording will show that this song is less docile than it is here. Sometimes, he uses a slight crooning sound, which sounds fine, but after repeated listening, you wish he can project a fuller sound. I still enjoyed this CD but there are 500+ songs out there and I'm sure Bostridge can find more than enough that suits his voice!

Return of the King of all Koto CDs.......2006-05-30
Good things come in 3's, I guess. Like its two predecessors, this is really an excellent CD of koto music, making for an incredible trilogy. Once again, the sound quality is crystal clear, the performances inspired and superb, and the music itself very beautiful--in a rather different way this time. Strange even, but it works all the same.
The prior two "Art of the Koto" CDs covered the historical development of koto music from the 1600's until the early 1900's, and so this album picks up where they left off by covering the innovations of the late twentieth century (from 1969 to 1989). Appropriately enough, all the music here is played on the 21-string koto invented after WWII rather than on the usual 13-string koto. The first track, composed by Miki Minoru (the guy who formed Pro Musica Nipponia, the music group that brought us the great album "Japan: Traditional Vocal and Instrumental Music") is weird and experimental...almost harsh on the ears sometimes. The second piece (five tracks), by Nagasawa Katsutoshi, is hauntingly beautiful and meditative. The third composition (two tracks) is by Miki Minoru again, this time more like the kind of music I'm used to by him, skillfully blending traditional Japanese music with modern musical sensibilities in a new and wonderful synthesis. "Nanae" by Nishimura Akira is somewhat similar to track one: eerie and experimental, abrupt and harsh on the ears in spots but still strangely appealing in a twilight zone way. Finally, Sato Somei's composition is rather alien sounding in a quiet, retro-primitive manner--a creative imagining of what protohistorical Japanese koto music for the deities might have sounded like (talk about full circle). These are all pretty unique selections, too--I doubt you'll ever find them on another CD in the States.
Again as with volumes one and two, the liner notes for this album are incredibly extensive and full of detail. It's wonderfully clear that much effort went into them, and one gets a real crash course in modern koto music from reading along--this is especially important in volume three's case, as this CD covers ground not usually found elsewhere. First we get a good description of the 21-string koto, its invention and history, and its place in the overall development of koto music as a whole. Next each track is introduced and explained in fine, loving detail--including lots of information about each individual composer. And musicological details for the music expert are included as is usual with this series. Finally, each performer is introduced along with a quick summary of her or his career.
Like volumes one and two, this is an excellent CD on all counts. As an album it may very well stand on its own well enough, but listening to it after the prior two volumes is probably better. My sense is that it may be hard to appreciate what the composers and musicians are accomplishing if unaware of the musical tradition they are building upon and innovating in new directions. Also this is very atypical koto music (even the actual instrument is atypical) so I wouldn't recommend this CD as an introduction nor as a first koto CD. If you've listened to volumes one and two or otherwise familiarized yourself with the Japanese koto, though, this stuff will blow you away.

Schubert Overheard.......2002-11-21
I first owned Schnabel's recording of the D959 on a 78 set, and in those far-off years heard him play another in a recital in Baltimore. The Schnabel vogue -- in terms of attendance at recitals -- had definitely waned. But those who were there were deeply happy people. I have never seen a soloist who gave so much the impression of playing for himself and a few other people; it was as though you were in his home. No one could have been less the Great Virtuoso, more the quiet sharer. And there's an intimacy in his playing of Schubert that no one else quite matches, for me at least. Someone has said that poetry -- unlike rhetorical prose -- is "overheard." So with Schnabel's playing, and especially his Schubert. We were privileged to overhear it. And still are.

Album Description
Pianists worldwide are attracted to Chopin's Waltzes. They incorporate a range of moods from melancholy to effervescent but retain an air of sophistication deemed for aristocratic salons. Chopin composed in this genre throughout his lifetime and was highly praised for his pianistic developments. He dedicated his life to the piano, establishing it as a solo instrument and freeing it from orchestral and choral influences. Here is a fine collection of his waltzes, some of his most famous and others less known.

Album Description
The mazurka is in fact both a French title and a translation of Poland's native dance called a Mazurk. It is in triple time, either 3/8 or 3/4, (Chopin's mazurkas were written in the latter) and often used church modes as a source of harmony. The original folk mazurka is a combination of three dances, but is flexible to allow an improvisational section for new parts. For many of his compositions, Chopin turned to Polish folk music for inspiration. One of his favoured (and specialised) techniques is rubato and here it is ideal to convey the feeling of improvisation. Dotted rhythms and irregular accents are also characteristic of mazurkas and Chopin wrote with this particularly in mind. He combined these traditions with major and minor modes and extended this common dance to become a higher musical form and at the same time, captured the true spirit of the Mazurk. Chopin composed over 50 throughout his lifetime.
A `Nocturne' usually means an evening song that is soft in character, but Chopin developed this genre to incorporate a variety of moods with a more poetic and expressive nature, while adopting an A-B-A form. Section `A' usually consisted of a dreamy bel-canto style and section `B,' a more dramatic passage (a particular example of this is Op. 15, No 1).
Here Chopin again turns to another dance form of his native land, Poland and takes its title from the peasant processional dances, Polski. As with the mazurka, it is in triple time, although Chopin adopts slower tempos and a more majestic quality. Chopin composed polonaises and waltzes throughout his lifetime. His first polonaise was composed at the age of 7 (Polonaise in G minor) and the last was Polonaise-Fantasie in A flat major Op. 61 dated in 1846. He applied many ideas to his polonaises, extending the boundaries of the `A-B-A' form. He composed introductions, experimented with codas and polyphonic textures and developed themes and bridges.
Like his Mazurkas, the Polonaises inspire a certain respect of the Polish spirit while demanding an accomplished piano technique. The interpretation and in particular, understanding of these two dances are key to a true performance of Chopin's works. Here Felicja Blumental has the benefit of her Polish background to accompany her technical agility and artistic intuition.
