One of the best!!.......2007-06-01
This CD is one of the best CD's that I have purchased in quite some time. I actually need to make a copy of it since I play it practically everyday going to and from work and I would like to listen to it at home as well.
How 'bout this, Ya'll?.......2007-01-21
I think Jeff Bradshaw and Roy Hargrove could, No, I take that back...SHOULD do a COLLABORATION together, with James Poyser, Jazzy Jeff, Rapheal Saadiq on some of the production, ?uestlove on all drums, Erykah, Amel, Jill, Angie, Alicia (on some Rhodes), India, Lauryn (Hill, that is), and Floetry, Michelle Ndegeocello all doing some vocals and spoken word and somewhere between Musiqsoulchild,Eric Benet, and Kindred the family SOUL on vocals, D'Angelo would fall in in his first vocal appearance on any album in 8 years. (Since VOODOO)
That would be a dream come true. Peace, Love, & Nu Classic Soul
Jeff Bradshaw -Bone Deep.......2007-01-15
I love this CD. It is so smooth, upbeat and relaxing. I have told all of my friends about this cd. This is definitely one of my favorites and recommend it to anyone. You do not have to be a jazz fanatic to enjoy this.
Love it!!!!.......2006-10-13
Can't imagine why I slept on this for so long - letting all that good music go to waste. Mr. Bradshaw is a real bad-azz on that trombone - and he sings, too!! An entire trombone CD - who would've thunk? I used to love the powerful trombone playing from the group 'Chicago' from back in the day. People never gave it very much credit, but I betcha that'll change now! This CD is very smooth, cool, jazzy, funky, laid back - all that & 2 bags of chips. Favorites are Come Over, which is the cut that drew me to wanting the CD; Beyond the Stars w/Glenn Lewis (Lewis' vocals combined w/that beautiful, haunting background music willl draw you into listening to it over & over again); Smooth Soul - just a cool, chilling song & I loved the way N'Dambi sang Miss Celie's Blues[Sister]. All in all - Bone Deep is one you will want in your collection! Get it!
Bad to the Bone!!!.......2005-12-07
Ahh, yes! What a breath of fresh air this CD is! For starters, it's about time a trombone (bone) soloist steps from behind the back to the front, to take this instrument to new directions. And that's just what Jeff Bradshaw does on his debuting CD, "Bone Deep." From the intro teaser and skits, to collaborations with Jill Scott, Glenn Lewis, and the incredible Bilal, this CD sings from beginning to end. My favorite cuts are "Lookin" and the James Brown remake "Make It Funky." I also especially like the effects Bradshaw employs on his trombone, it gives it an almost synthesized sound. Trust me, this is definitely not the usual trombone sound associated with jazz, and that's a good thing.
That said, if you're strictly a jazz purist, this CD probably won't satisfy you. But for everyone else on planet earth, who enjoy jazz fusion or smooth jazz, "Bone Deep" should be in your collection!!!

Fun with Lords and Fairies.......2007-05-12
Iolanthe was the first Gilbert & Sullivan purchase I'd ever made. I did so for my wife, not for myself. Who knew!? Yes, Gilbert & Sullivan music does indeed "sound like Gilbert & Sullivan" music; I have difficulty listening to this music without visualizing any of a number of Monty Python skits. But I had no idea that Gilbert's lyrics were so witty, nor that they were written as social commentary. Hilarious stuff. I am especially pleased that this recording includes the spoken dialogue between the songs. This really brings the music to life for me.
Classic D'Oyly Carte Opera Company stereo version of "Iolanthe" from 1960.......2007-03-22
SOURCE: September 1960 studio recording made in London.
SOUND: When new, the series of G&S recordings that includes this "Iolanthe" was generally regarded as being at the leading edge of commercial analogue stereo. The digital remastering carried out in the late 1990s was generally successful and the sound on these CDs will be perfectly satisfactory to anyone but hyper-finicky audiophiles.
CAST: Lord Chancellor - John Reed (patter baritone); Earl Mountararat - Donald Adams (bass-baritone); Earl Tolloller - Thomas Round (tenor); Private Willis - Kenneth Sandford (bass-baritone); Strephon - Alan Styler (baritone); Queen of the Fairies - Gillian Knight (mezzo-soprano); Iolanthe - Yvonne Newman (mezzo-soprano); Celia - Jennifer Toye (soprano); Leila - Pauline Wales (soprano); Fleta - Dawn Bradshaw (speaking part); Phyllis - Mary Sansom (soprano). CONDUCTOR: Isadore Godfrey with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Chorus, the New Symphony Orchestra of London and the Band of the Grenadier Guards.
TEXT: With one significant exception, the text of this performance is the standard text adopted by the D'Oyly Carte Company early in the Twentieth Century and performed by them until the company's demise at the hands of the penny-pinching Thatcher government. The standard text contains one major cut from the opening night's score, a song for Strephon called "Fold Your Flapping Wings." The song was not recorded here, although it has been restored in the 1991 recording of the New D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.
The exception to the standard text in this performance arises from the fact that the original production of "Iolanthe" was offered to the London audience in an ultra-sumptuous production. That production had a full military brass band to play for the spectacular entrance of the peers in Act One. The D'Oyly Carte touring companies, playing year after year throughout the length and breadth of Britain and Ireland, on the other hand, could not afford the luxury of a second band. For them, Sullivan thriftily provided a version of the entrance music that could be played by the pick-up orchestras playing in the pits of provincial theaters. The touring version became the standard version and was played on all prior recording.
It should be noted that this set was recorded at a time when the record producers elected to break with the long-established practice of omitting the spoken words. The labels on both the old Lp album and the current CD case proudly proclaim, "Complete with dialogue" and so it is. You are free to regard this fact as a welcome addition or as an insufferable nuisance.
COMMENTARY: This recording captures the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company--the production company founded by Gilbert, Sullivan and their producer, Richard D'Oyly Carte--at the height of its 1960s form. At its core were stars still held fondly in the hearts of many G&S afficionados: John Reed, Kenneth Sandford, Thomas Round, Donald Adams and Gillian Knight. It was certainly a very sound cast and, naturally, the most experienced in the world in this repertory. This performance is in the classic D'Oyly Carte tradition which stretches back directly to the days when genial Sullivan conducted from the pit of the Savoy Theatre and glowering Gilbert directed the performers on stage.
The recordings of the original DCOC can be divided into four strata: the electrical recordings of the late 1920s and early 1930s, the mono recordings of the 1950s, the first stereo recordings of the 1960s and the second stereo recordings of the 1970s. Fans debate with considerable heat about the respective merits of the three earlier strata. (Nobody pays much attention to the final one.) The 1960s cast certainly has its adherents. Purely as a matter of personal taste, I prefer the earlier ones, but they are recorded in the "historic" sound not beloved by ears accustomed to the digital era.
The previous reviewer was struck by the speed of this performance and even suggested some humorous explanations for it. (Ho-ho-ho.) This "Iolanthe" is unquestionably more brisk than the contemporary and rival version conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. From the outset, however the Sargent series was widely criticized as being overly lugubrious. This recording is a fair presentation of the tempo of the actual DCOC stage production as I remember it. It is about the same as the 1950s recorded version and, if anything, a bit slower than the 1930s version.
Overall, this is a good stereo "Iolanthe." It showcases the absolutely authentic performing tradition for the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.
Five stars.
The fastest Iolanthe in the world?.......2004-07-17
This is a recording that shows its age a bit. The women's pronounciation is rather like the Queen's: from another era. It's not surprising I suppose, because this was recorded in 1960. John Reed is good as the Lord Chancellor, as is Kenneth Sandford as the Sentry. However, this production is so rushed! I strongly suspect this was recorded so as to end in time for the cast to get to the pub before last orders.
Another possibility is that it was squeezed to fit a double LP.

Author John Bradshaw (Healing the Shame That Binds You and Homecoming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child) teams up with Steven Halpern for a pair of music-enhanced guided meditations where Bradshaw encourages listeners to breathe out tension and accept "your higher power" to replace the internal vacuum that he identifies as a common spiritual affliction. Bradshaw and Halpern spend the first 21 minutes of this 50-minute disc swapping views on the merits of attaining what Halpern calls a "deeply relaxed psycho-spiritual state of peace, harmony, and attunement." Bradshaw's "journey to wholeness" is rooted in the 11th step of the 12-step recovery process, seeking connection to a higher power through prayer and meditation. In the second installment, Bradshaw's slight drawl mingles with Halpern's modest, dreamlike audio backdrop, creating a gently hypnotic discourse that is earnestly presented, though skeptical listeners might chuckle at Bradshaw's exhortations to "breathe through your knees" and other bodily regions to attain full relaxation. The disc concludes with Halpern quietly noodling on the electric piano for eight minutes while periodically intoning the colors of the chakra and their corresponding locations in the body. Thus, the disc boils down to one Bradshaw-directed meditation that lasts 21 minutes. Is it worth it? Let your inner self decide. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
I listen to the 11th Step meditation daily!.......1999-04-10
I had bought the audio tape years ago after I attended a John Bradshaw/Steve Halperin Workshop on "The Inner Child." I have found the meditations to be very helpful. When I'm tired, scared, or depressed, I lay down and listen to either or both meditations. I may do this to get centered and/or receive messages from my "Higher Power." Listening to John's voice and message and Steven's gentle music also releases the stress in my body. The sound of Johns voice is very pleasant, a rich baritone. He has a way with words and a gift for speaking. I usually get up after my meditation and feel rejuvenated; physically, emotionally and spiritually.Sometimes I listen to John Bradshaw's 11th step meditations as I go to sleep. I normally have good REM sleep as a consequence. John's resonant voice and Steve Halperin's soothing music are magical together. Steve Halperin, for his part, is an talented, intuitive musician, very much aware of how music can effect the body and he plays accordingly. For example, myy heart rate and breathing rate synchronize into a peaceful descent into a safe "place" during the mediations. In conclusion, I highly recommend this CD!
Both of these meditations are helpful and useful........1998-07-24
John Bradshaw and Steve Halpern team up to give us a guide to the 11th step meditation. They have a very helpful and insightful discussion on side one about meditation and meditation music. On side two there is a 6 minute and a fifteen minute meditation. I have listened to both of these many times. The short one is great when you have a few minutes at work or anytime you need to come apart for a while. The longer meditation is a guided journey that is very relaxing. I would recommend this tape to any one looking for a meditation tape whether he is in recovery or not.

I agree with the reviewer who suggested tossing the 1st disc and playing the 2nd - and play it loud! The first disc is interesting from a historical sense (with some enjoyable music), but the 2nd one is the rockin' one. This package also comes with an informative booklet. I would actually give this 3 1/2 stars for having to spend the money to enjoy one out of two discs. For people who like this era, this package is more enjoyable (to me) than the Lucky Millinder offering, "Apollo Jump."
KING years make it worth the purchase !.......2005-05-17
Tiny Bradshaw never really got his due as one of the true godfather's of rock and roll and its a darn shame. It may very well have been because by the time he died a whole generation of young and more in touch rock and rollers were breaking up the house, and doing it well enough to simply drown him out. - - Still, in listening to this CD straight through, I'm reminded a bit of the career of Louis Prima, which also spanned pre-swing Jazz and peaked in the final days of Rock and Roll. One get's the impression that like Prima, Bradshaw was one of those soul survivors willing to do anything necessary to redefine himself and hang in... Prima arguably managed to do it in a much more charismatic and flamboyant manner however. Many of the top honkers of their time may have gone through boot camp in Tiny's group, but sadly, he never had that Sam Butera and Keely Smith... (James Brown's Maceo Parker, Duke Ellington's Billy Strayhorn or Sly Stone's Larry Graham) in otherwords, he had creative brilliance, but sadly was never able to package in a signature sound that was HIS and his alone. - - As a result, a billion other artists who DID have their own sound (for but a moment) perhaps were able to fly in, lift his stuff and hit do good with it.
Still, with all this said, Bradshaw managed to surround himself with the best players of his age and wrote great tunes... remarkably though if you listen to his pre JUMP / R & R stuff on DISK 1, then dig the true heavy swinging house rocking stuff on the DISK 2, you can hear how he started as a Cab Calloway meets Jimmy Durante 1930's hot Jazz shouter, and never managed to truly change his vocal style in the 50's... perhaps that's probably what kept him from becoming the true legend he deserved to be. - - Whatever, there are a number of reasons to get this CD (besides the great booklet and disk) - - I can give you 4 words actually... RED PRYSOCK and RUFUS GORE...! The tunes, with their rough edges (a few really bad vocal duos with ridiculously off key lady singers for example) by DISK 2 are great house rocking stuff... not to mention some occasional impredictable lyrics... To sum it up and if you haven't heard WALK THAT MESS (with a horrifying funky Lenny Picket type tenor shrill) you haven't really lived or swung !!! GET THIS (toss DISK ONE) after a brief lesson then get town with the BOODIE GREEN !
Jump, Boogie, & Blues.......2002-11-13

What more can a Blues & Jazz lover ask for? This band did it all & it seemed like thay had a good time doin' it. For me Tiny's band rate's up thar with the best of 'em.

Iolanthe has one of the funniest lines in all of Gilbert and Sullivan. As the Peers (as in the House of Lords) enter, they sing: "Bow! Bow! Ye lower middle classes; Bow! Bow! Ye tradesmen bow ye masses; Blow the Trumpets! Bang the brasses! Tan Taran Tarah Chin Boom!" OK, so you had to have been there; but trust me, it's a riot. Anyway, this "fairy"-story parody on the undine theme, about a fairy who loves a mortal, is a typically frothy confection of biting social satire and innocent sentiment. The performance by the D'Oyly Carte company is about as close to the original production as we're likely to get. --David Hurwitz

TEXT: With one significant exception, the text of this performance is the standard text adopted by the D'Oyly Carte Company early in the Twentieth Century and performed by them until the company's demise at the hands of the penny-pinching Thatcher government. The standard text contains one major cut from the opening night's score, a song for Strephon called "Fold Your Flapping Wings." The song was not recorded here, although it has been restored in the 1991 recording of the (quite different) New D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.
The exception to the standard text in this performance arises from the fact that the original production of "Iolanthe" was offered to the London audience in an ultra-sumptuous production. That production had a full military brass band to play for the spectacular entrance of the peers in Act One. The D'Oyly Carte touring companies, on the other hand, playing year after year throughout the length and breadth of Britain and Ireland, could not afford the luxury of a second band. For them, Sullivan thriftily provided a version of the entrance music that could be played by the pick-up orchestras playing in the pits of provincial theaters. The touring version became the standard version and was played on all prior recordings.
It should be noted that this set was recorded at a time when the record producers elected to break with the long-established practice of omitting spoken words. The labels on both the old Lp album and the earlier version of the CD case proudly proclaimed "Complete with dialogue" and so it was and is. You are free to regard this fact as a welcome addition or as an insufferable nuisance.
COMMENTARY: This recording captures the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company--the production company founded by Gilbert, Sullivan and their producer, Richard D'Oyly Carte--in the height of its 1960s form. At its core were stars still held fondly in the hearts of many G&S afficionados worldwide: John Reed, Kenneth Sandford, Thomas Round, Donald Adams and Gillian Knight. It was certainly a very sound cast and, naturally, the most experienced in the world in the G&S repertory.
This is a performance in the classic D'Oyly Carte tradition which stretches directly back to the days when genial Sullivan conducted from the pit of the Savoy Theatre and glowering Gilbert was the stage director.
This "Iolanthe" is more brisk than the contemporary and rival version conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. However the whole Sargent series has been widely criticized from the outset as being unnecessarily lugubrious. What is recorded here is a fair presentation of the tempo of the actual DCOC stage production as I remember it. It is about the same as the 1950s version and, if anything, a bit slower than the 1930s version.
Overall, a good stereo version of "Iolanthe" displaying the absolutely authentic performing tradition for the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.
Five stars.
A Masterpiece.......2006-08-04
"Iolanthe" isn't nearly as famous as "The Pirates of Penzance" or "The Mikado" or "HMS Pinafore" but this Gilbert and Sullivan Musical Play is a masterpiece of equal merit. It is a satire on the English Class System. And it is VERY funny! For example there is track 8 entitled, "Loudly let the trumpet bray". On that track the snobbish Lords are singing to the audience: "Bow ye tradesmen, bow ye masses"...telling all us "masses" and "tradesmen" to bow down to them! The thing that makes this really funny is that these snobbish Lords are a bunch of "silly fellows" who are actually much inferior to "the masses" of their fellow citizens whom they are ordering to bow down to them!
There is much clever and charming dialogue and many clever and tuneful songs. You'll enjoy this CD and you'll look forward to sometime in the future when you can see this charming masterpiece performed on stage in person. Until then, you'll cherish the CD! Email:boland7214@aol.
One of Sullivan's finest.......2003-04-12
Mikado, Pirates, and Pinafore are the most POPULAR of the G&S operettas. Musically, however, the BEST three are Ruddigore, Iolanthe, and Yoemen. If you want to enjoy a total theatre experience one of the first three mentioned might be best (it would certainly be more likely). For a good listen at home - the last three, every time.
This recording is a little dated, technically and performance wise - get hold of a libretto if you can, as the words are not always quite as crystal clear as they might be, and missing any of them would really be too bad.
Until a really good modern recording replaces it - still the best recording of Iolanthe, which means one of the very best operetta recordings you can get!
A classic piece of G&S.......2003-02-16
A wonderful bit of ridiculousness courtesy of Gilbert and Sullivan. This recording is great, and includes the intermediary dialogue. If you like some of the more mainstream Gilbert and Sullivan musicals, such as Pirates of Penzance or the Mikado, then you'll enjoy this one. The story involves a young man named Strephon who is half fairy (from the waist up) and who is in love with Phyllis, a ward in Chancery. Although there are some refrences to British parliament which many American's (myself included) are probably missing out on, it remains an enjoyable and whimsical operetta with a classic happy ending in typical topsy-turvy Gilbert and Sullivan stye.
Excellent G&S.......2000-05-20
The music is simply beautiful; the lyrics are hilarious satire. What a treat for G&S fans. I'm so glad I bought this!

A Showcase of DH's Mozart........2007-02-09
If Don Giovanni wasn't casted by Mozart with sufficient solo arias, this soundtrack made it up by having the same singer singing the part of Leporello as well.
In recent years DH has focused primarily on his native Russian reportoire. In part, this is a true loss to operatic fans.
Here in Don Giovanni, DH demonstrates what a versatile singer he is.
Personally I find his timbre suits the role of Don Giovanni more than Leporello. Even so, in terms of singing, the great solo arias of Leporello were handled very well too in this recording.
If the orchestra is not as first rate as other top-notch ones, and the rest of the cast less well-known, the singers of Zerlina and Commendatore did come up with more than competent performances alongside with DH.
Just for the sake of a truly good baritone singing a truly great opera, this soundtrack is a must to own.
Masterful Don Giovanni.......2002-03-21
I'd say Hvorostovsky makes the best Don Giovanni there is. Despite his temperament fits more to Verdi than Mozart, I really love his exquisite lyric baritone voice in Mozart. I was extremely impressed when I heard him sung the Count at Salzburg back in 95. He is my favorite Mozart interpreter ever since. I don't think anybody else could quite pull off "La ci darem" and "Serenade" so seductively as Hvorostovsky does. His "Champagne aria" is at most perfect tempo, and even Lepollero's "Catalogo aria" sounds so sensuous. This is the only recording of his Mozart. I should be thankful to have this at all since he sung both Giovanni and Leporello. What a clever idea!
The film version of "Lepollero's Revenge is quite a treat.
Dmitri's portrayal of both Don Giovanni and Lepollero is absolutely charming. He showed his comical skills so well.
He'll sing Don Giovanni at the Met next season and The Marriage of Figaro at Paris, so he keeps the balance in between various Verdi productions.
what a thrill !.......2001-12-16
To hear my favorite singer perform my favorite opera is a treat indeed, and through the the magic of modern technology, we get to hear him do duets with himself, as both the Don, and Leporello. This dual casting, as the booklet says about this hour long film, "...alludes to the notion that the Don and his servant are alter-egos, opposite sides of the the same person".
One of the reasons I like this CD is that I get to hear all the parts of this opera (including the overture) that delight me, all on one disc...also the recitativos, which are sometimes the most delectable of all...and Hvorostovsky does them so well, with his flawless Italian.
I also love the trio "Al taci, ingiusto core", and the sestetto "Sola, sola in buio loco". Of the lovely melodic arias, the "La ci darem la mano" duet, and the beautiful Serenata are wonderful, and perfectly suited for his rich baritone.
In the cast there's Dominique Labelle (Donna Anna), Gary Relyea (Commendatore), Liesel Fedkenheuer (Donna Elvira), Michael Colvin (Ottavio), Krisztina Szabo (Zerlina), and Alain Coulombe (Masetto), and though they may not be of Hvorostovsky's stature (few singers are !), they do an excellent job of backing him here. I especially like Relyea, and he gets to sing in what for me is one of the greatest scenes in all opera, the final trio, starting with the Commendatore's "Don Giovanni, a cenar teco"...now to hope this film becomes available on video !

Outstanding!.......2007-01-23
In an era when broadcast recitals are an increading rarity, listening to an album like this is a very special treat. Listening to Schade and Braun provides an exquisite evening's entertainment, what genuinely used to be called a "soiree" in the good old days. I can't say enough for this album; both their phrasing and their enthusiasm are infectious and highly enjoyable. A real treat!!
What sweet music!.......2000-08-28
This compilation of french classics is artistically priceless. Michael Schade and Russell Braun deliver charm and beauty mixed with subtle sadness on certain pieces, that only true musical genius can convey effectively. Michael Schade's crystal clear voice is pure, sweet and high, a gift that few possess and even fewer utilize. I would listen to Michael Schade over Pavarotti any day of the week! Russell Braun delivers an equally endearing baritone voice that conveys dramatic phrases as well as more expressive passages.
It is this type of quality music that makes me fiercely proud to be Canadian. I only wish that more Canadians would see the value of this art and push their elected representatives to keep it alive and make it thrive. To read more on this topic, read the article Richard Bradshaw has written on the Canadian Opera Company Web Page.
This cd is a must have for anyone who is remotely musically adept. If you have ears you will enjoy this cd. Need I say more?...

Life on the islands .........2000-07-08
A friend played this record for me in the 70's, and I liked one tune, "Bangarang", so much that she gave me the record! I was, I must say, surprised. I played the record many times and grew to like it as a whole. The band is not extraordinary, it is probably an excellent club band that was playing in the Carribbean in the 60's and 70's. A lot of the tunes are covers, but, each one is given a reggae or ska treatment that is unlike the original and that gives it an island flavor. This record gives you the feel of life in the islands, sun in the day, and funky rhythms, dancing, and rum drinks at night. An easy, very pleasurable life.
And then the tune "Bangarang". The tune has a looping horn line that alternates with lyrics that seem to consist of "ooma na ma, bangarang" and little else. There are melodic breaks by the saxophone and trombone. This tune is totally unique. As I subsequently learned, it is one of the first and classic ska tunes, well known in the Carribbean, if not at all in the U.S. It has haunted me for years. Of course, I lost, misplaced, wore out, who knows, my vinyl, and I never expected to be able to find this disc again. Hats off to Amazon!
