In 1957, at the dawn of the urban folk revival, Moses Asch's Folkways label issued the first of Pete Seeger's American Favorite Ballads series. Marketing these albums to schools and libraries, Folkways served to document a range of great American folk songs that had remained popular with children since the previous century. Now Smithsonian Folkways has reissued American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 1--five volumes were released between 1957 and 1962--in an expanded edition that adds extra tracks taken from some of Seeger's other LPs from the same era. Although this is not explicitly a children's album (the sordid murder depicted in "Frankie and Johnny" is hardly kid-friendly), Seeger's performances have a jaunty sing-along quality that still appeals to younger listeners. Seeger's intent was to introduce these classic songs to a new audience, but his use of banjo as a backing instrument proved almost as influential. His idiosyncratic picking unexpectedly launched a fad among up-and-coming folk groups like the Kingston Trio, and just about every band from the period added a Vega Pete Seeger model banjo to its lineup. Though many of the songs on American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 1 will be very familiar, Seeger's unabashed joy in singing them is infectious and will have even the most curmudgeonly listener itching to sing along with him. --Michael Simmons

Favorite Ballads part 1.......2007-05-18
I originally bought this cd in order to see if I wanted to buy the entire set. After listening to it, I do. Seeger brings these favorites to life bringing in some unfamiliar lyrics that I am sure were closer to the original spirit of the songs than the ones that we all learned in grade school. The simple accompaniment adds to the attraction of the songs.
Seegers at his best.......2006-08-19
These are the melodies which represent an heritage of american way of life during the century of the war between states.
Many of the words of the ballads evidence genuine foklore.
The way Seegers sings is of a unique quality
PETE FINDS HIS ROOTS AND OURS.......2006-06-26
Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.
I have done reviews of Pete Seeger's more political albums and need not address those issues here. These volumes of American classics with Pete and banjo are the songs you learned mysteriously in your youth, apparently by osmosis. As each song goes along you find yourself singing along to at least part of the song. These songs go deep into the popular culture and the roots of what makes those of us who were born here conscious of the musical influences that formed our lives. You may not like every song but the total effect will grab you.
Essential American music.......2002-09-29
Pete Seeger's five "American Favorite Ballads" LPs were the basic documents of American folk music for generations. No dusty museum pieces, though - they were lively, funny, inspirational, joyous. It is delightful to see them begin to appear now on CD, especially fleshed out, as this volume is, with appropriate additional tracks from his other out-of-print Folkways LPs (how about getting some of those out on CD?). Essential in every way.

Album Description
Ballads fuse the arts of music and storytelling. Through ballads, classic tales of human experience are enshrined in poetry and song. Pete Seeger, an American folk hero and icon of the great "folk revival" of the 1950s & 1960s, hand-selected some of his favorite American ballads to compile a series of classic American song-stories flowing from the bedrock of the American experience. Through these captivating songs, a tale is told of America "once upon a time." This CD is the second in a series of Ballad reissues, and an important recording for any fan of American folk music. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place and Guy Logsdon.

Excellent resource to rediscover our musical heritage.......2003-07-15
Folksinger, banjoplayer, songwriter Pete Seeger was born in New York in 1919, the son of musicologist Charles Louis Seeger and violin teacher Constance de Clyver. A political activist, he fought injustice. Seeger was a member of the Almanac Singers and The Weavers in the 40s. During the 50s and 60s, he recorded for Folkways Records. In fact, he was so prolific, there were 38 albums released for Folkways between 1950 and 1964. From 1957-62, Seeger's 5-record "American Favorite Ballads" series were a cornerstone of the collection. "American Favorite Ballads" has apparently been reissued in two volumes. The songs were, and still are, essential items for the folk music enthusiast. As Seeger always believed, we should be singing and enjoying these old songs. And he had a knack for involving his audiences, interacting with them in ways that stimulated their active participation. While not all of the songs on this Volume 2 CD are true ballads in the strict definition of the term, each tells a strong story. With extensive liner notes, and 27 songs totaling 73 minutes, there are many songs that we'll immediately recognize while others are a little more obscure. All are sung by Seeger, most accompanied only with banjo or 12-string guitar. This is an excellent resource for all Americans to rediscover their musical heritage and favorite story songs. Album Description
Pete Seeger has long set the standard for interpreters of American traditional and topical songs. Armed with a silken, irresistible voice, bold faith in the power of song and a five-string banjo or twelve-string guitar, he offers up his music not just as entertainment, but as a means of making the world a better place. This third volume in a series of compilations of songs from the Folkways Records classic American Favorite Ballads series of the 1950s and 1960s again features Pete Seeger interpreting some of the classic songs from America's history. These are the songs that children sing at camp and learn at school like their parents before them. This recording includes extensive notes on the history of these songs. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place and Guy Logsdon.

from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-12-22
"My Favorite Things" is a collection of "everyone's favorites - from jazz classics to movie themes with new music I think you'll like, too," recorded and arranged by pianist Lisa Hilton and her jazz ensemble. Eight of the fourteen tracks are Hilton's originals, including "Seduction," which has appeared on a couple of Hilton's previous albums (a knockout piece!). On some of Hilton's previous ensemble albums, I thought the piano was too much in the background, but that's not the case with "My Favorite Things." Hilton lets her fellow bandmates (Eric Marienthal on sax and flute, Tal Bergman on drums, and Reggie McBride on bass) shine, but the piano takes the lead on most of the tracks on this album. Hilton's classy, fluid jazz stylings are easy to listen to and enjoy both in the foreground and as a backdrop for other activities.
The CD opens with "Let's Go!," one of Hilton's compositions. Energetic and upbeat, this piece really moves. "My Favorite Things" is a silky-smooth arrangement of the Rogers and Hammerstein classic, played a bit darker than you usually hear it, but it works well, and there is a beautiful interplay between piano and sax. "Take Five" is the Paul Desmond classic made popular by Dave Brubeck - a really tasty arrangement. "Midnight Sky" is another Hilton original - cool, dark and mysterious - I like it! "Desafinado" is another silky take on a jazz classic - flowing, warm, and contented. Hilton and company give "Alfie" a feeling of longing and sadness - an ideal slow dance! "Clearly" is the only solo piano track on this album, and it's a sweetly reflective gem. Like many of Hilton's fans, I think her "Seduction" is one of her best pieces. Talk about slinky! The sax gives the piece even more of an attitude and adds to the fun. "So This Is Love" dances on air with a sense of wonder and joy. "Changes" closes out the album on a introspective note. This piece has such a strong melody that it's easy to imagine the song with lyrics (although they certainly aren't needed!). A nice, smooth finish!
"My Favorite Things" is a most enjoyable album, offering a blend of more serious music and good-time tunes. This is my favorite of Lisa Hilton's ensemble albums (so far!). Recommended for smooth jazz aficionados.
Very Good Recording!.......2005-11-02
Lisa Hilton is Jazz music's hidden gem. The Malibu, California resident has worked with many of genre's greatest professionals. Her previous CD's I reviewed were highly recommended with Hilton receiving plenty of airplay. Her latest CD, "My Favorite Things" continues the formula she develops, mixing American standards to her original compositions and having musician extraordinaires such as Saxophonist, Eric Marienthal. Hilton does wonders on classics such as Jobim's, "Desafinado" The Gershwin brothers', "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and Paul Desmond's, "Take Five". Her latest original compositions are very good. "Seduction/remix" is clearly the best track on this CD with its soulful beats and nice sax playing. It's hard for me so say it, but there were a few misses on this CD. I wasn't sure about the track, "Midnight Sky". It seemed to out of place in the track selection. Despite the slight flaw, this CD is still a wonderful listen. Recommended.
Great!.......2005-10-04
I love listening to this CD when I'm driving! She's a great pianist and her talent is excellently showcased in My Favorite Things.

If you think the music you've heard from his fingers in the past was good, wait until you hear this. You won't regret this purchase. Absolutely top drawer!
Very Enjoyable And From The Heart.......2002-03-04
Into Your Heart is one of the best CD's I've heard in some time. There are no bad tracks, which makes this CD highly enjoyable each time you listen to it. Mick Hucknall of Simply Red once penned that he was 'one of those grains of sand that gets blown all around the world'and that sentiment truly describes the life of all musicians. Tom Schuman has brought his memories of special places and people to Into Your Heart. The CD is masterfully crafted and is garnering rave reviews from all who hear it. It's a rare day when this writer is first in line for anything.
So when I checked an online bulletin board and saw that I was the first person in the USA to order Tom Schuman's new CD on the Internet, it was a great feeling - especially since it was the man himself who posted the message.
An even greater feeling came when I received "Into Your Heart" (JazzBridge Music) the following day and played it for the first time - and the second, and the fifth, etc.
Tom composed and produced all 12 tracks, with much of the work done at his Bethesda, Md., home. He is joined by some relative unknowns: Dottie Jones, vocals on "Find a Way" and "Past Stories"; David Charles, additional percussion on "Quality Time," "Shinjuku" and "Third Spirit"; and Tom's grandson, Jacob Garcia, baby vocals on "Third Spirit."
Better than half the songs on the CD are motivated by love for people who have inspired the 44-year-old Buffalo, N.Y. native.
"Find a Way," the opening track on "Into Your Heart," is my early favorite. Jones' sultry vocal and Tom's melodic piano/keyboard performance marry the old and the new - contemporary jazz with old-school.
"Portrait of My Father," a slow, quiet piece reminiscent of old-style jazz, is dedicated to Tom's late father, Walter J. Schuman, himself an accomplished jazz bassist. On that track and on "Past Stories," a spin on the name of legendary jazzman Jaco Pastorius, Tom's mastery of modern technology really comes through.
Tom pushes the envelope, mixing rapid-fire keyboard sequences with a driving bass track.
Usually, there's a tell-tale airiness that lets you know certain sounds are done by a synthesizer or computer. Percussion and bass rhythms rare change - taboo in the improvisational world of jazz.
Yet Tom pulls it off. Taking high-tech samples and groundbreaking software, he makes the bass, drums and other instruments sound authentic.
Another three songs that really stand out are "Mysterious Ways," Tom's expression of reverence to God, "Samba for Two" and the Japanese-themed "Shinjuku," named for an area of Tokyo.
Tom has said he jammed with his parents as a child. Count me as onelistener who is very grateful for those jams.

Long Live Princess Diana!!.......2006-07-30
This is such a cool CD!!! It's soooo amazing!!! Why isn't this topping the charts! Karen Sokolof Javitch is a genius--she's right up there with Mozart and Gershwin. The rhythmic Broadway tunes get your toes tappin' and fingers snappin'!! Each song on the CD is worth listening to again and again and again! My utter favorite is He's Such a Man, like the reviewer below. But I like the reprise!! It's SOOOOOO HILARIOUS!!!!!!! Listen to it it is GENIUS baby!!! Here are the lyrics:
Diana: He's such a man! He's so different from all of those boys I've seen around!
Charles: Darling, I brought some books by Sir Laurence van der Post to read with you!
Diana: He's such a man! He's more charming and worldly than anyone in this town!
Charles: I brought my fishing poles! Do you like to fish?
Diana: And he treats me with respect and dignity!
Charles: I invited all the Navy officers to dine with us. I hope you don't mind.
Diana: And he's always a real gentleman!
Charles: Darling, now that we're married you don't have to call me Sir anymore!
Diana: He bowed and took my hand!
Charles: Do you like my new kilts?
Diana: He's the manliest man!
Charles: Want to see my muscle?
Diana: That the world has ever known! He's such a man! He's such a man!
*A picture of Camilla Parker-Bowles falls out of Prince Charles's diary*
Diana: Oh, Charles, let me help you!
Charles: Diana! It's just one picture of her--it doesn't mean anything to me! Look, Diana, it's just a picture of a time from my past--you're my future, you're my Queen!
Diana: Charles, you told me you were over her!
Charles: I am!
Diana: Charles, I am your wife!
Charles: I know...
Diana: I'll be damned if I sit back while your relationship's intact with that--with that---Camilla Devilla!
Charles: She's in my past!
Diana: I am your wife!
Charles: You are my Queen!
Diana & Charles (simutaneously): I am your wife!/You are my Queen!
That Karen's a smart cookie. 5 stars allllllllll the way!!!!!
Princess Diana Rocks!.......2006-05-26
Wow I LOVE this CD! My mom's gonna order it for me and I just can't wait! If you want to listen to samples visit JMR Productions Website. My favorite song is "He's Such a Man!" It's so bouncy and fun, it has me dancin' and singin' along every time! A bit of the script is available online--search "Princess Diana the Musical" and it should turn up. The musical's pretty good and very accurate. I just love the music--maybe it's not the best music ever, but it rocks for me!
Just plain awful..........2003-08-29
This is absolutely terrible. It's good for a few laughs, but beyond that, there is no point. Musically, it is full of cliches and has no merit whatsoever. It is an insult to the royal family and Princess Diana would be sickened if she were around to hear it. However, that said, it is EXTREMELY funny because it is so bad. Gag!
so bad it's good...almost.......2003-03-08
Sample lyrics:
"Everything happens at Buckingham Palace at the Palace at the Palace..." (Really, does it? Really, does it? Really, does it?) (party guests)
"Should I throw up now or later?" (Mmm, depends...who's around?) (Princess Diana)
"He's the manliest man and the grandliest gran" (The what?) (Princess Diana)
"Then she died, and now she's gone..." (Really? She died, and now she's gone? Both those things?) (Princess Diana)
Anyway, I laughed all the way through it. But you know, I listened to it. It's insidiously addictive.
A kitsch classic!.......2001-11-07
This either rates 1 star or 5, depending on your sense of taste. It falls into the same region as Precious Moments figurines and Franklin Mint plates -- if you like those, then you may well find this enjoyable. If you don't (and I certainly don't), then your reaction will either be horror or ironic hilarity -- indeed, it's hard for me to imagine the performers being able to sing these numbers without cracking up.
Keywords: kitsch, schlock.
