Bach with a nice difference.......2007-02-16

Bach, hmmmm, one of the desert island composers for me. I own three complete organ works (yeah I need a life). This is one of the better. The recording quality is faultless. And for a laugh, listen to the wonderfull reeds of the pedal department jumping from left to right (speaker) in BWV 550 ... Prelude and Fugue in G Major ... I just love stereo when the mics are right in the middle of the organ and you hear the pipes singing from left to right!! Another wonderful surprise was Ritchie's use of the 32' reed stop in the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

I can almost hear the purists intake of breath, tsk tsk's and see their rolling eyes. However, Bach did travel around central Germany and I read in Grove's Dictionary his comment about the wonderful 32' stop at Leipzig.

The collection of American organs on this set was also an eye opener for me (not being from America) and only knowing about the monster organs like St. John the Devine (NY) or the Wannamaker. It's good to know that there are some beautifully voiced and balanced smaller organs to be found.

No Need to Look Further.......2007-01-04

All the superlative reviews of this set are correct. The sound engineering is superb. The performances range from the sublime to the magisterial, as one would expect with Bach's organ works. If you order direct from Raven Records, you can pick up this set for about $50. They delivered it promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed!! I've never purchased a box set of CDs that gave you more for your money.

Exceptional performances, great sound, great value.......2006-09-17

I read very carefully through all the reviews of the various performances of Bach organ works by Koopman before purchasing this set. I'd owned both Walcha and Hurford and (to my shock) found the much-lauded Walcha set a bit dry and plodding, almost self-conscious. Hurford was certainly fun in a kind of Fourth of July way, and I'd pick up a two disc compilation if one was available, but his technicolor high-impact Bach got on my nerves after a while, and honestly his approach is not really suitable for many of these pieces--an overwrought sameness settles in, despite his imaginative use of stops. Koopman seemed to get high grades from every reviewer (except, oddly, just the one nearby) so I thought I'd give it a try, especially at this price.

Verdict?--a very nice balance point between the two other mentioned artists. This is not blockbuster Bach (and that's fine) but it's hardly academic-style performance (in fact he improvises a bit, especially in some familiar favorites). The negative reviewer found these rushed and poorly phrased but the other possible way to view the situation is that the performances reflect the period-instrument movement tendency toward brisker-than-traditional (in the last century) tempos and a less "romanticized" kind of playing (again, 20th century tradition).

The D minor Toccata and Fugue is a bit of a shocker, but as soon as it's trucking along one realizes that the "Stokowski" approach (even with solo organ) has probably bent the piece out of shape. Koopman's odd version actually sounds like it fits in with the rest of Bach's collected organ pieces. Listening to this is like (to pull another Stokowski reference out of my hat) hearing the original version of Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" that no one ever hears--it just sounds more like Mussorgsky. The fact that Koopman chose not to play to the gallery (of either academics OR audiophiles) on this one tired lollipop impressed me mightily. Overall, this is the least exhausting large set of Bach organ pieces I've ever encountered, this due not just to the variety of organs used but to Koopman's individualizing of each piece through careful shaping and a very understated yet characterful use of stops.

For anyone wanting the traditional blockbuster Toccata and Fugue or just more traditional performances stay the heck away from this set. Really, you'll be really P.O.ed. Anyone else exploring this repertoire, especially those who have delved deeply into Bach and baroque music in general, should pick this up, as it's quite nice. Sadly, "Brilliant" stuff--which is often extraordinary--ends up in middle-of-the-road bookstores and similar places where it's bargain-priced and picked up by the unknowing.

One last note: the playing is impeccable and Koopman, in many of the appropriate works, seems to convey some real joy in his own playing. I think this was a fun project for him.

NOT THE BEST.......2006-09-06

For the past weeks or so, I have been listening to this collection of Bach ORGAN WORKS played by Ton Koopman on various instruments. Some of the pieces are well-known (Toccata and Fugue in D minor), others not so well-known. The overall impression that I have is that of a hurried player, who wants to get it done and quickly. The recorded sound is poor, the phrasing is weak and the playing lacks in consistency and brilliance. I don't mean brilliance à la Virgil Fox. I mean steady methodic brilliance such as Bach demands. I am sorry, but this is not recommended.

A treasure! BUY!.......2005-10-06

A 6CD-box of Bach's organ works with Ton Koopman to this price! Here you find preludiums, fugues, partitas, trio-sonatas, fantasias and chorals. As I cannot compare to other performers, I can only tell you that I like it very much. I can listen to it for hours! I guess that I can feel when something is inspired and not. I guess the reasons for this offer is that pure organ music has a limited appeal at the music market. I consider this my best buy ever, when it comes to quality, quantity for price! This is not going to be available for ever, so don't hesitate!

Bach for professional listeners.......2006-01-30

What I found amazing about this boxset is the opportunity to enjoy Bach in complete form. From my point of view Passacaglia performed by Werner Jacob is a five star performance. Also BWV 593 and BWV 596 push up and show up no limits for the listener. This 16 CDs aggregate the perfect union between the artist, instrument, listener and Bach. And at the end of the day I can say that organ works can still be ... trendy. Enjoy!

Bach Organ Works on original organs.......2004-10-24

121 organ tracks or works on 16 CDs has to be spaced out in about six days. The music is so restful I found myself dowsing. The price for a new set through Amazon was right. Bach organ hymns made Luther.

I never thought I would like Bach's organ works as they can be dense and daunting. However, if you can get onto Bach's wavelength, he can transport you to an electric cosmos of beauty and enlightenment. I was given a collection of Bach organ LPs by Helmut Walcha some time ago. My friend said that Germans regard Walcha as the premier interpreter of this music. He certainly knows how to play the organ and this music soars in his hands. This music is more varied than most people imagine. Some is extremely simple and delicate while some crushes your brain! I have always loved Archive recordings and these did not disappoint!

Helmut Walcha was named my TIME as "the" Bach interpreter for organ. I think that is true more than ever today with all the influences of the French Romantic school, the slam-dunk American style and the avant garde crowd. The recording has a German sound, quintessentially Teutonic in both style and approach. While Bach sounds different and even magnificient on an Aristide Cavaillé-Coll organ it does not sound authentic - or as we perceive authenticity.

The fact that the artist is blind(!) means that unlike other folks who can use the music as aids, he must rely on his phenomenal memory. This is truly the stuff of genius. The sonatas are brilliant and I have never heard a better B Minor Prelude & Fugue. I only with that his stupendous "Kunst der Fuge" could have been transferred from record to CD.

Religious experience........2006-03-04

This set of many Bach's Organ works by Helmut Walcha is, in my opinion, the greatest recording of these immortal treasures. There are almost all of Bach's Preludes and Fugues for organ, as well as many fantasias, miscallenous works and his chorals for this instrument. Walcha plays with utmost respect to the original scores, his playing is clear and powerful. Many other organists have allowed themselves quite a bit of experiment with these pieces (likes of Ton Koopman are over the top), but in the end, i've always came back to Walcha's renditions. If you want to treat yourself with some of the greatest music ever written, then get this rare set! Bach's organ music can be challenging at first, especially the fugues, and many of my friends have complained that they hear nothing else than noise in these pieces. I suppose you have to have listened this kind of music for quite some time, before you can wholly appreciate these unique pieces. But once you have, you find a world full of riches and wonder, world which only Bach can bring you. And this is a world i wouldn't change for any riches in the world.

A real bargain at under $100.......2005-12-20

It is hard to express in words what an incredible achievement this is. The immense feats of memory alone, demanding far greater efforts than sighted performers face, command our respect. So does the consistent quality of Walcha's playing.

Bach's almost mathematical absorbtion with fugue lies at the centre of his genius. He was an organist first and foremost, an organist all his life. Like Bach, Walcha is an obsessive controller who uses music to shape his world. He treats each piece as a treasure to be cherished and burnished, and this makes him the greatest Bach organist since Schweitzer. We are told that Bach would travel miles to hear great organists perform, and Helmut Walcha is just such an organist as those.

The magnificent instrument used here is celestial in tone. To those for whom Bach fugues conjure up images of Christopher Lee playing Dracula, or dull Sundays in church, here is one of the great achievements of Western civilization, a glittering pinnacle of Baroque art, performed by a great modern spirit, in one handy box. You can't have Michaelangelo ceilings in your home, or Bernini bronzes in your living room, but by golly, you can put this on your stereo.

Heavenly music.......2005-02-23

I'm not a big organ music fan- maybe it's because it reminds this atheist too much of church! But the music here by Bach, and especially the playing by Walcha are just fantastic. I was dubious that I could find interest in 11 CDs of organ music, but I'm enthralled by every minute of each disc. A wonderful bargain!

Complete set CD review of Bach.......2007-05-12

I discovered Bach organ music 40 years ago. I love Bach, everything he wrote. I have 4 complete sets of Bach organ recordings. Marie Claire-Alan is my favorite organist of everyone I have heard. I met Marie and her husband in person after a performance she gave in Chicago. I have 2 complete sets of Bach organ played by Marie. One is on records and the other the new CD set. She is a little older now when she recorded the CD's. The albums have a more youthful sound to them, a little more energy and different registration selection on the organs. I love Marie in her youthful recordings more than these. I love the albums so much I will digitize them and listen to them over the new CD collection. I play the albums on my Linn turntable through McIntosh equipment.

The Definitive Collection of Bach .......2005-09-25

Marie-Claire Alain has recorded Bach's complete organ music 3 times, this set being the second time. She plays quite differently now, but these are some of the best interpretations. Each cd fearures a different organ dating from Bach's time, and all of the booklets are filled with pictures, history, and even the stop registrations for each of the pieces are given. Quite alot of research! If those of you who are new to Bach's organ works, I would recommend starting on a smaller scale, as some of these works can be quite intense to listen to. At any rate, this possibly may go down as one of the famous recordings of the century.

From this huge box set, it is quite obvious that Bach was a dedicated composer for the organ (and obviously a virtuoso organist for that matter). Bach was a very prominent composer who lived in the Baroque era, and to truely understand his works and their style you must have a general outline of knowledge of the timeframe in which he lived. And so the Baroque era, (1600-1750) was characterized by vastness of proportion, rich counterpoint, great splendor and a highly ornamented melodic line. (One should note that the era abruptly ended after Bach's death which actually shows his importance in it) Some of these pieces are examples of works that require performers at the very highest degree to play them. His works go way beyond the famous Toccata and Fuge in D Minor, and with a "Complete" edition you can listen and hear them all for yourself, hence grasping the full view of his genious. This set is of wonderful value and worth every penny. Unfortunately, the Master's version is not available in a CD store, and so we must indulge upon other's interpretations. This out of the others stands as one of the very best. It is also complementing to the experience to have an instrument of the period (which is so in this set). Bach devoted his entire frame of mind towards the spreading of God's kingdom, therefore one could derive that he felt that by creating enlightening and insightful music, he was doing a lowly service to his God. Overall--this is a fabulous interpretation, and it will deepen one's respect and awe for Johann Sebastian Bach, the greatest organist who ever lived.

Monumental Artistry.......2003-03-08

Although I am partial to the Romantic Organ, particularly in the vein of Widor, Vierne and Rheinberger, it all begins with Bach. And in this case, one could say that it all begins with Marie-Claire Alain and her wonderful interpretations. Alain seems to understand that Bach was above all else a religious composer. Many "complete" works of Bach play short shrift with the liturgical works whereas these are some of the most satisfying of the group.

The sound is pure sonority, almost perfect, and the technical prowess is just awesome. Out of the millions of notes played, I never heard a miscue or slight jiggle. Still, keyboard wizardry is only part of the story. The registration is a work of art in itself. Alain understand the difference between the Baroque and the Modern, the French and the German and the old and the new. Just as she is a "natural" for Widor or Vierne, she also seems to have entered the Bach mind on some of these.

This is a fabulous collection worthy of any serious student of classical music. Nowhere can one derive such satisfaction that listenting to Bach played by Ms. Alain.

This is a ten CD box set with a huge number of great classical piano pieces. Most are played by Jeno Jando, who gets high marks from the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs and DVDs (highly recommended in its own right for the novice and experienced classical music CD buyer) for his playing on budget labels. You will recognize many of the pieces and they will serve as a jumping off point for additional exploration of classical piano. At roughly $2 each, you can't lose!

The Laserlight label also offers a similar box set of orchestral selections "Meditation - Classical Relaxation". At the time of this writing, that boxed set enjoys a much higher sales ranking than this one. This boxed set deserves to be discovered too. Don't let the low price fool you, these are excellent recordings.

The other reviews only PARTLY right.......2002-08-14

I agree with both other reviewers re the duo coronet/organ arrangements on SOME of the bands of Disk #2 I have, but McCann plays them very well and the organ is fine if you like the organ (which I don't). BUT, the OTHER BANDS include orchestra and on ALL bands McCann really plays beautifully. However, I will not buy another disk of these because of the duo performance bands and - WHAT A SHAME as ALMOST ALL THE PIECES REALLY ARE AMONG WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL and MANY are very difficult, if not impossible, to find ANY arrangement of (though at least half on each cd readily avail other perfs arrangements).

Misleading CD title!.......2000-12-16

Thought I was purchasing a nice compendium of beautiful songs to listen to on long trips. You'd better love the golden cornet if you buy this CD - or, rather, 5 CDs!

Hope you like the "Golden Cornet" and organ..........2000-03-19

This CD set has all the greatest melodies... only they are performed by some guy and his "golden cornet" (a horn). There is accompaniment by an organ. This set WOULD have been great, IF it was performed by a piano. Huge disappointment. Would have been nice to know what instrument was used to begin with.
