Customer Reviews:
Solid Album worth your interest.......2006-09-03
I'd have to agree with much of what the other reviewer wrote. This album is very solid. Kind of a mix of Tarantism and Hungry Sally. Missed Your Eyes, It's My Mistake, Torn to Pieces, Hey Hey Whada Ya Say, and In Between are all really, really good tracks. The rest are all good too but these are the standouts. Worth your purchase. Solid effort from a really good band.
Perhaps Tito & Tarantula's best album yet.......2005-12-01
This album is so good that I listen to a few songs from it almost every day! Here's what's hot about it:
Missed Your Eyes--This song has a nice guitar-bass tune that it goes to and a cool chorus, with several members of the band singing. It's a pretty good song overall, especially after te pause halfway through the song. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva, Peter Atanasoff, Stevie Medina-Hufstefer, and Io Perry.
It's My Mistake--Definately the best song on the album!! Great rock music with especially cool guitar by Peter Atanasoff and some great background vocals by Io Perry. When I want to listen to this album, this is the top priority song to listen to. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva, Peter Atanasoff, Stevie Medina-Hufstefer, and Io Perry.
California Girl--This is a fairly good song but it can get old after a while. But it still has a nice chorus. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva, Stevie Medina-Hufstefer, and Io Perry.
You're the One I Love--I don't like this song that much. Though the guitar and bass are well played, the tune doesn't do much for me. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva.
Torn To Pieces--I really like this song. It has a great dancing beat and tune, and is great to sing along to. One of the album's best. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva, Peter Atanasoff, Stevie Medina-Hufstefer, Io Perry, and Marcus Praeo.
Hey Hey Hey, Whaddya Say--Another great song with a really good dancing beat and tune. I especially like how it switches off singers in the chorus. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva, Peter Atanasoff, Stevie Medina-Hufstefer, Io Perry, and Marcus Praeo.
Bullets From A Gun--This song starts out with decieving loud music, but slows down into soft rock. It's not a bad song, I just don't care for it much. However, it does have a very nice chorus and emotional singing. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva.
Make Me--This song features mainly acoustic guitar by Stevie Medina-Hufstefer until a brief piano solo by Marcus Praeo, after which it sports electric guitar by Peter Atanasoff, bass by Io Perry, and drums by Johnny Hernandez. It's not one of my favorite songs on the album, but some parts of the chorus are pretty good and the second half is good. Also has some nice backup singing by Io Perry. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva and Io Perry.
My Power Is In Your Hands--This is a very good song with roots that can be traced back to the band's song on TARANTISM, Slippin' and Slidin'. It has a really good rock beat with great guitar playing. One of my favorite songs on the album. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva and Peter Atanasoff.
Ready Made--This song didn't do much for me at first, but now that I listen to it I realize it has some really good guitar playing, especially at the beginning of the second stanza. The singing is also pretty good. It works well with the music. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva, Peter Atanasoff, Stevie Medina-Hufstefer, and Io Perry.
Effortless--This is another one of my favorite songs. It's a great rock song with a really good chorus along with the lyrics. The rock guitar is also very impressive. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva.
In Between--My last favorite song on the album, thought it isn't at the very top of my favorites list. It takes a while to get to the chorus, but once it's up to it, the song really picks up. Good rythem guitar by Tito Larriva. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva, Peter Atanasoff, and Io Perry.
Mexican Sky--I'm not overly fond of this song, as it is soft rock song that is just too soft for my taste. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva and Io Perry.
La Flor De Mal--This is a slow, tormented remake of the Cruzados (Stevie Medina-Hufstefer's father's and Tito's old band from the 80s) song from 1985, La Flor De Mal. The original is much better. This version is slow with the singing almost completely muffled out. The song doesn't show the least bit of liveliness. But the lead and rythem guitar are okay. Featuring vocals by Tito Larriva.
This album is well worth the money you'll pay for it. It's not easy to find in stores so I suggest you order it off amazon as soon as possible.

The Skeleton Key - sounds of the old South.......2007-04-11
Dark, stormy listening to take you to the marshlands of New Orleans - at times, clearly a soundtrack, but with tracks from the likes of Robert Johnson and the hoodoo beats of Iko Iko, you'll suddenly feel an inkling for Gumbo like a true bayou-dwelling Creole.
contains every compositional piece from the movie.......2006-08-04
This CD contains what I thought was every compositional piece from the movie. I was hoping the CD in general would be a little more up-beat and personally I found it a little bit boring to listen to. Listen carefully to the music of the movie becuase that is exactly what you get.
good soundtrack.......2006-01-13
If you are fan of the blues, or you simply enjoy eerie instrumental tunes, this soundtrack is for you.
It is very rare for me to find a soundtrack that contains all the songs i liked from a movie. This is the case! It even has Papa Justify's conjuration of sacrifice, those drums really take you to New Orleans Hoodoo streets. A great complement for the fans of the movie .
Review from Equalmusic.com.......2005-10-28
If you are jonesing for the way New Orleans' used to be or are kicking yourself hard because you never made the pilgrimage down before the recent tragedy, then the soundtrack to The Skeleton Key is your best bet. Like the movie, the soundtrack transports the audience into the bayou culture with such ease that at times it's almost hard to believe that you're not in fact below the Mason-Dixon Line. Released on Varese Records, it is the perfect accompaniment to the film.
Composer Edward Shearmur and the Hollywood Studio Symphony bring the flick to life with their bone chilling orchestrations that can creep you out even in the light of day. Those who dig the horror aspect of the film will be pleased with the inclusion of "Conjure of Sacrifice," a spoken track key to the movie's plot. However, the real reason to buy this release is not for its freaky facets but for its spotlight on a few of the most influential blues artists of the twentieth century.
For anyone beginning to cultivate an interest in blues, this is a great foray into the genre and its heavy hitters. First off is Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen." Johnson, who many have dubbed the father of modern rock and roll, delivers his legendary take on Delta Blues with perfection. Mississippi Fred McDowell, master of the slide guitar, whether it be bottleneck or the apocryphal steak bone, lends his "61 Highway Blues" with a kind of raw integrity.
My vote however, goes to celebrated gospel musician, Blind Willie Johnson. His "God Moves On The Water" with its crackly sound quality, delivers a sucker punch to the soul. Johnny Farmer's "Death Letter" is easily the best track the recording has to offer. Farmer, the only bluesman on the disc still alive and kicking it, loans an infectious ditty that seeps into the skin and refuses to be washed away. Haunting and beat driven, the song is given a modern remix by southern rapper, Organized Noize. The marriage of Delta and hip-hop here is flawless.
Of course there are a few missteps and oddities. Blackbud's "Barefoot Dancing" is a jarring departure from the easy bayou theme. The song is ill suited to both movie and soundtrack, a definite skipper. As is Joe Washburn's "The Goldrush," which despite its melodic back music has a whiny quality that's hard to overlook. "Do Watcha Wanna" by Rebirth Brass Band is an interesting addition. It is a lively big band song that puts one in the mood for Mardi Gras. A rare gem is The Dixie Cups' version of the old Indian Mardi Gras chant "Iko Iko." Although given sinister connotations in the film, it is a fun and upbeat addition to the disc.
Seeped in New Orleans' jazz and Cajun music, the CD captures the music of The Big Easy and its surrounding parishes with forthright conviction. With the latest disaster still a fresh wound, the soundtrack as well as the film is jarring in ways that have nothing to do with the practice of voodoo. However, it is its ability to elegantly capture the culture and feel of the place that make both worth looking into. If only for a little while New Orleans's is returned to its former splendor through the music it has become known for. I suggest seeing the movie first then checking out this superb auxiliary.
Spooky good fun!.......2005-09-01
I bought this soundtrack mostly for the song that played during the opening and end credits, "Death Letter" by Johnny Farmer (with some fun added drum beats and enhancement by Organized Noize). The song (as well as the rest of the soundtrack) was mixed by Chris Fogel. The rest of the soundtrack is a mix of old bayou songs and Edward Shearmur's shamelessly delicious score. It's spooky with a taste of the old South. It's a lot of fun and one of the most entertaining soundtracks I have heard in a while.

Mark Gardener of Ride teams up with Gold rush and they work wonders together.
It has no real relation to the sound Ride created but their version of dreams burn down is lovely, one of my favourite Ride tracks, other than that they have one track each, they both sound great.
Gold rush are from the U.K. but they really owe their sound to the U.S, really nice cd...

Mark Gardener's former band Ride is known for a droning, druggy guitar wash, of the kind practiced by My Bloody Valentine and their noise pop contemporaries in the early `90s. The title notwithstanding, These Beautiful Ghosts, Gardener's first solo record since Ride's messy break-up in 1996, does indeed sound more than a little haunted. At the very least, there's a certain nostalgia in the wistful, autumnal tone of the record. But this is definitely not an attempt to raise the spirits of his past with fuzzboxes and feedback. Collaborating here with alt-country band (and fellow Oxford lads) Goldrush, it's only occasionally one hears a hint of his old band's hypnotic racket. The instrumental "Flaws of Perception" chugs through a melancholy opening, then blossoms into a still-polite delirium, while "Getting Out of Your Own Way" starts off mining the sparse '60s jangle pop that characterized Ride's Carnival of Light before pleasantly trailing off into the ether. On other songs, Gardener sounds a little crusty, a little too restrained. "Magdalen Sky" hides a good central melody behind a wall of treacle, while other songs, like the eventually decent "Rhapsody"" take too long to find their way. Still, Goldrush's earthy accompaniment helps to leaven the pensive mood and if Gardener chooses to keep playing with them he stands a good chance of resurrecting himself for a second musical life. --Matthew Cooke
Album Description
The highly anticipated solo debut by the frontman of the UK act RIDE.
These Beautiful Ghosts opens with "Snow In Mexico," an ethereal and poignant piece Mark says is, "
about people collisions." Inspired by a newspaper headline, Mark ran with the spirit of the words. "It's really about how people can blow hot and cold, be one way one minute and then completely different, the next."
Texturally, the record does retain some of the atmospheric nuance that Ride knew so well. For reference, listening to mammoth pieces like the sweeping "Gravity Flow" but These Beautiful Ghosts is a completely different animal. "I wanted to make a record that's got some weight and some emotional content, but is also interesting to listen to." The emotive quality of the record is certainly not lost to its soundscapes. Rather, the wedding of neat sounds to songs that reach out to us are palpable as in the bonafide pop song, "To Get Me Through" and the gorgeous "Summer Turns To Fall" (actually penned by Robin from Goldrush and American songwriter Danny Power while meditating on Mark's time with Ride), with its uplifting harmonies reminiscent of the best things Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young have ever done. The rest of the record rolls off like a desert wind- memorable, mysterious and refreshing.

2 Thumbs Up.......2006-06-05
Mark Gardener has a soothing voice with upbeat melodies (especially in "Snow in Mexico") that make the songs particularly enjoyable to listen to and great for singing along. If you have an appreciation for talented musicians then you definately need to get this CD!
"A warm and intriguing voice...".......2006-06-01
A warm and intriguing voice matched with beautiful melodies that sail throughout the songs found on These Beautiful Ghosts. His voice and accompaniment are so nicely balanced throughout the songs that it allows the listener to truly hear and appreciate all that is going on, which seems to be a rare treat these days. This CD is a great listen from beginning to end as the songs move effortlessly from one to the next.
listen to this album.......2006-05-24
Former front man for legendary group, Ride releases first solo album. Songs are very heartfelt and dynamic. Acoustic and Piano folk rock. Similar to Coldplay and Damien Rice.
Impressive Solo Debut!.......2005-10-18
I think I have been waiting for this album since Ride disassembled and the wait was more then worth it. Mark's album offers an enjoyable listen that anyone, not just shoegazer fans, can appreciate.
I was lucky enough to catch Mark on tour this past September, where I was treated to an incrediable show and a preview of this album. I needlessly worried that what I experienced at the show wouldn't be represented on the album, but knowing Mark, I should have known better. This album is Mark, and it is amazing because of that.
The album is a wonderful, wonderful record that demands to be played over and over again.

For those of you have read Deutsche Heute, this is an album that really will get your juices going. the follow-up to In Wirklich, it contains the very classy title track (recently showcased on Nivea's advert in the UK,as well as some real hum-dingers of the electro-pop scene that is burgeoning in the Fatherland. These guys will take your breath away, the vocals, synths and general funkdaddliness would look at home next to a copy of Melody AM and other celebrations of all things european - the UK scene has long been subservient to its euro-partners such as K&D, DJ DSL, the French wave and many others, and this is some more testimony.

cool man.......2005-11-09
Goldrush is one of the best up and coming bands from England. They started about five years ago. Soon they caught the attention of Mark Gardener. I saw Mark Gardener play with Goldrush last June. It was a legendary event. Goldrush is one of the most musically pure bands. They have caught the imagination of people like The Flaming Lips. This Oxford band works in the tradition of Ride and Radiohead. Some of that rich material that Radiohead has left behind, Goldrush had dud into. It's like a mix of folk music and sonic experimentation. This album has the feeling of traveling around country roads. Ozona is the name of some place in Texas. The pilgrim soul has been honed by producers like Dave Fridmann and Rob Campanella, who have worked on some of the most forward sounding records of the past ten years. Goldrush will be playing a lot in California this month. Hopefully you will check them out.
A little bit alt-country.......2005-09-07
The desert will do funny things to a man. Some get driven mad from the heat; they hallucinate and sooner or later, they crack.
Some however, forge through and manage to make the most of the situation, much as Goldrush did when their bus broke down in the middle of Ozona, Texas.
There they were; stranded, like fish out of water, worlds away from their home of Oxford, England.
Ozona is a tiny town, but apparently it has a bar, and when you're a group of hard-drinking lads from England, that's enough. After all, the best way to fit in with a bunch of hillbillies is to share their common bond - booze.
So the band decided to make the most of it - the result, an album that blends equal parts Wilco, Pavement, the Replacements and "Crazy Horse"-era Neil Young.
The albums title is a nod to that sleepy little town that helped inspire them create this masterpiece, put out on their own label, Truck Records.
The band formed in 2001 and has shared the stage with the likes of Soft Parade and the Flaming Lips (a band that they have been compared to on some level).
"Counting Song" and "Let You Down" are remakes of songs that appeared on 2003's "Extended Play." These newer versions maintain the same feel and theme carried throughout "Ozona," ethereal indie-rock with traces of alt-country.
Robin Bennett's whiskey-soaked vocals spin tales of love and loss as the rest of the crew jam out tunes that seem to inspire the listener to hop in their car and make the drive down to that quite, dusty town in Texas.
And as luck would have it, Goldrush is coming to town. That means you don't have to trek all the way out to Oxford to see them, heck; you don't even have to go to Ozona.

Overall, a good cd.......1999-08-02
This is a pretty good cd with a wide variety of music. The "Goldrush Suite" is fun to listen to, as is the Phil Woods excerpt. "American Sketches" is played fine, and is written to represent the ethnic background of each of the players. The whole composition of the piece could use a little more sparkle, but the players do it justice. Overall, a good cd, well played, though not outstanding.
