One of the best Bluesmen ever!!!!!.......2006-11-21
Corey Stevens is one of the most original Bluesmen around right now. He continues to push the envelope on each record. Stevens knows no musical boundaries. Instead of putting out stale old cover songs like most bands these days, the majority of Stevens music is original music he wrote himself. Stevens has more integrity than any of this "new" generation of people trying to play Blues. Corey Stevens has staying power, he's been in the business for many years, and there's a reason for that, because he is a true blue Bluesman, who's music is real. Corey Stevens is keeping the blues BLUE. I stand behind every record he makes because I can recognize true genius, true talent when I hear it. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Corey Stevens are the ONLY white Bluesmen I listen to. I think that says alot that I give them the honor of being in the same category of Bluesmen like Albert King, Buddy Guy, BB King, Freddie King, Robert Johnson, Elmore James, etc. Corey Stevens is every bit as much of a Bluesman as they all are. Stevens lives and breathes the Blues. Don't believe any of the negative reviews you see on here, just buy this record now, and you too will hear this is true! In a 100 years from now Corey Stevens will be remembered as one of the Legends of Blues, he will be talked about in the same sentences mentioning the Kings of the Blues. If you are not yet a fan of Stevens, buy this CD and you will be, and if by chance after that you're somehow not, then my friend you are tone deaf. Corey Stevens is one of the best! Your Blues CD collection is not complete until you have each one of his records in it! This will be one of the best purchases you make!
Great blues rock!.......2005-07-09
I bought this CD on a whim without knowing anything about it. This CD and "Road to Zen" have become my absolute favorite blues CDs!! I can't recommend them enough. Give them a try!
Great Blues Rock.......2003-11-21
This is what blues rock is all about.Great rockin' blues and beautiful ballads.Great vocal and guitar,I can't recomend this cd enough.
solid tunes and stinging guitar work.......1998-06-03
I first heard this cd and thought this is the way eric clapton should play and is the way the great late stevie ray vaughn played. This album is something smooth yet stiff like greenlabel jack daniels.

Superb.......2006-11-14
Carlos Salzedo's music is difficult, no VERY difficult (and I'm a harpist, so I know these things!) and the Salzedo Harp Duo play them as effortlessly as water falling off a leaf. Inspired musicality and daredevil tempos make this a "must have" and even if you're not a harpist, it's absolutely lovely music. And "Rhumba" will have you dancing!
Delightful music for harp duo..........2005-03-08
This is an irresistible collection of beautiful melodies arranged (or composed) for harp duo. Nancy Lendrum & Jody Guinn are masters of their instruments, and lend an energy and flourish to this delightful assortment of music by Carlos Salzedo and other assorted classical composers. The arrangements are crisp and the playing is brilliant! There isn't a dull moment or 'lackluster' piece on this cd. This music would be ideal accompaniment to any activity from a "dinner party for 8" to a Sunday afternoon relaxing with a good book...highly recommended!!

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME.......2006-01-30
Does he sound like Stevie Ray and Clapton at times? Sure, but I say so what. Didn't Stevie Ray sound like Hendrix at times? If we wanted all the artists we listen to to sound completely original we'd be hard pressed to find anything to listen to. I picked this CD up without knowing anything about Corey and I loved it right from the get-go.
Nice guitar tone, good vocals, good playing, and the songs are well written even if not highly original. In case no one has noticed, it is extremely difficult to sound totally original when playing the blues, I don't care who you are. There are only so many ways to play a shuffle or a slow blues. I have no problem recommending this CD, you can definitely do worse.
GOOD BUT NOT VERY ORIGINAL.......2003-09-24
Every track seems to have a base in someone elses musik. This is not that unusual on a blues CD, but COREY even styles his vocals on the sound he copies. SRV plays and sings the first track and the second is like a left over from REPTILE ( CLAPTONS latest )
While these are generally good songs in their own rite, it is hard to forget the inspiration they are based on. This is a pretty good blues CD and proves that COREY is on the right track. If he developes a little (LOT) more originality he may well turn into one of the up and coming young blues players. In the meantime I will enjoy this CD for what it is - a smorgasboard of songs from some of your favourite players, played by someone else.
P.S. after 2 weeks this has grown on me again and I had to revise my earlier rating. These are first class songs written in the style of other guitarists, played in an understated, tastefull style.
Stevie Ray Vaughan?.......2002-12-23
Everyone keeps comparing this guy to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Corey doesn't looks like Stevie Ray Vaughan, play like him or sing like him. He looks, plays and sings like Clapton and for Clapton fans that's not a bad thing, this guy is great. I just had to get that straight. Stevie Ray Vaughan?!
Some Fine Texas Blues.......2002-09-28
On Blue Drops of Rain , Corey Stevens not only sounds like Stevie Ray Vaughan but he also looks like him too.But Corey is not a cheap no talent knockoff wannabe, no siree, Corey Stevens is the real deal. His fret work is top notch and he has excellent vocals as well as song writing skills. Why he is not a star or at least at Kenny Wayne or Jonny Lange status is not known.I have not heard any of his other cds but I can tell you track for track , song for song Blue Drops of Rain is a good ,well performed cd.
Gone To Long- you can call it a Texas shuffle or a SRV soundalike it matters not.It shuffles along and sounds like ,maybe, a couldn't stand the weather type song. But it is a good opener that shows Corey has a good voice and can pen a tune.
Blue Drops of Rain had some radio play and is some good smokey room blues.A nice understated solo at the end could of been longer.Perhaps live he stretches this out.
CrossCut Saw is a standard that I have heard done by several artists but Corey owns this song. His six string prowess kills on this song. If you want to hear one song to convince ya, this is the one.
I Got a Rich Mans Woman is a tried and true storyline, no matter what you do ya can't satisfy that woman.Once again the SRV sound with a touch of Chicago. Some really fine guitar lines come stinging out.
Its Over slows it down a bit too much for my taste , not a bad song , just not my style.
Back in Time is a lament for a lost love over a quick paced shuffle , good stuff and some nice slashing guitar fills.
I'll Play the Blues is laid back with a bit of organ and guitar interplay but again I wish Corey would have stretched it out with a killer solo here.
Lenny is a faithful cover of the SRV song
Brothers is what I would consider the weak track on Blue Drops of Rain . I can't say alot because I usually skip or ignore it because.....
Headshrinker is an awesome song, with Corey chatting it up about his problems its quite funny. With a bopping bassline and loose feel this is a good one.
Going Crazy closes the cd its another shuffle with stop and go chorus and more excellent axe chops. Its a good closer that should have you hitting the play button for another go around.
Blue Drops of Rain is an excellent consistent effort by Mr. Stevens. He may not have the over the top histronics of SRV but for me I'll take this cd over any by SRV for the simple fact that it can be listened to all the way thru , where I find SRV cds to have too many bad songs. Buy this cd if you are a Stevie Ray fan. Definitely buy this if you love the blues.

Not great/not bad.......2002-08-02
Corey never really convinces me that he's 100% committed to the material on this CD. There are some fine moments but some equally disappointing moments as well. He seems to be searching maybe a bit too hard for an identity here. The SRV look is a bit much in my opinion. That being said, he is not the "blues anti-christ" as other reviewers might lead you to believe. Playing music outside of the standard blues realm is really OK. There are other just as legitimate forms of music. Most of these self-proclaimed "blues lovers (translation - EXPERTS)" wouldn't know it if they were beat over the head with a National Steel anyway. Corey followed this effort up with a much more identifiable release, "Road To Zen". That release is not a blues CD but has alot of good rocking, fun moments. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this particular release but I wouldn't avoid it either.
Great Modern Blues.......2002-06-07
A touch of Clapton, a bit of Stevie Ray Vaughan, a tad of Buddy Guy and a smidgen of Albert King. Corey Stevens provides a great performance. "Lenny" is a great cover. "Crosscut Saw" is powerfull. "Blue drops of Rain", "I Got a Rich Man's Woman", Headshrinker" and "Goin' Crazy" are also strong tracts. If you find this CD it will be a treat.
ugh..........2001-11-07
A pretty severe example of how ANYBODY can rent a recording studio, record a few songs, pay for manufacturing yourself on a "vanity label" and pretend to be a musician.
As a professional musician (with 4 CDs out on a "REAL" commercial label), sometimes even I forget that a nice cover doesn't mean that the contents are worth listening to.
... you CAN'T always tell the book by it's cover.
ugh... don't bother.......2001-11-03
I got this as well as The Road to Zen CD - Both have ghastly production, embarsassingly dull guitar work and terribly unprofessional vocal attempts... Stevens appears to be a "wannabe" musician at which he fails terribly (perhaps evidenced by the fact that he's recording for an unknown label - (a bad sign...) One would hope that Stevens is better live, but not according to the critiques from the Google Groups Blues page This is a serious "don't waste your money" proposition.
I saw Corey Stevens last night. The good news is the cover was just $5. The bad news ...
He's not necessarily a SRV wannabe, but he does do a bad Clapton. He's got no discernable voice of his own. His guitar work isn't even very good; he was missing notes all night.
His continual references to "the blues" were tiresome and ultimately insulting. He is clearly no bluesman -- not even close. I'm not even sure he thinks so, but sadly, several hundred others did.
This was a two-hour assault of single-tempoed noisemaking -- the kind that keeps a roomful of folks grinning and nodding, and over-drinking because maybe that's why they're not having any fun yet.
More people were standing for his encore (the "here's one inspired by the Delta" Voodoo Chile) at 1:15 a.m. than saw Kenny Neal's first set the night before. And unlike Kenny Neal, Corey Stevens seems to have nowhere to grow musically. If there was ever any doubt, it's clear that Stevens and the like just aren't to be taken seriously.
Disappointment to Surprise.......2001-09-03
When I came across this album in the record store, I figured it was a rare SRV album. I mean, there was the legend right on the cover in a hat and soul-point leaning on an axe. I didn't even look at the title, just the songs on the back. "Lenny" was there, so I bought it thinking it I was getting nine tracks of SRV that I've never heard before. I was quite disappointed when I was home and realized my error. For kicks I played it anyway, and was surprised with the opening lick of "Gone Too Long". Stevens might try to emulate Stevie in look and sound, but that doesn't make this album any less great.
"Blue Drops of Rain" is one of my favorite guitar-blues albums that I own. He may have copied from the greats of SRV, Albert King, Clapton, and others, but he proves that he can take a style and make it his own. Half of the album he penned himself, and these songs are not lacking compared to the covers he performs. "Gone Too Long" starts the album off and sets the stage for the amazing blues to come. The tune is catchy and Stevens' guitar work will catch you by surprise. His music is varied, and he is able to play more traditional sounding blues like "Rich Man's Woman" and King's "Crosscut Saw", yet still be able to funk it up on "Headshrinker".
The man really knows how to play guitar. He doesn't try to fill up every available space with notes. Instead, he catches the rhythm in his melody so without his backing band, you can still hear the song in his solos - a very difficult thing to do. He gets monster tones on his guitar that will make you drool. His voice fits the genre quite well too. His low gravely growls amplify the pain in his lyrics, like "It's Over".
I thought I was getting some new SRV, but instead I found a new breath of fresh air on the blues scene. Stevens is incredibly talented and should be proud of this album. He might look it, but he is definitely not another knockoff. If you can find this album, don't hesitate in buying it.

American Song Potpourri.......2000-08-01
The 28 songs on this CD provide a broad spectrum of American art songs. JanDeGaetani possesses a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice and ideally expresses the proper emotions these songs require. Gilbert Kalish's piano supplies the necessary support without getting in the way of the singer. All in all, this is a good collaboration.
Kalish plays like a pig........1999-12-02
While I enjoyed De Gaetani's singing, Kalish's piano playing reminded me of a player piano.
a beautiful rendition of 20th Century American Song.......1999-06-06
This is a great album. It spans the spectrum of 20th Century American music from the tonality and romanticism of Stephen Foster to the experimentality of John Cage.
Jan DeGaetani and Gilbert Kalish, with their understanding and sensitivity to the music of their time, combine to form a duo that sets the standard for interpretation of this music.
Students, professionals, and general classical music lovers will cherish this CD in their library.
If you want an introduction to American Music of this Century, this album provides the most accessible doorway to the widest array of styles I have heard.

Customer Reviews:
My Life, A Dream.............2000-10-11
It's my life...just a bunch of hopes & dreams. It's comforting. It's ever so Graceful. It gives you peace within your soul. It inspires you. I love listening to this CD while I'm just lying down. It is like Rain Drops. Even though it's really piano playing,...it's almost as if you can hear the rain falling. So soft,...so gentle,...so like a Dream.
