Another installment in Philips's Set Your Life to Music series (which has included Mozart for Your Mind, Baroque at Bathtime, and Rachmaninoff for Romance, among others), Vivaldi for Valentines is loosely built around the aura of romance that Venice continues to evoke. Vivaldi captured it for all time in his music, inspired by the often melancholy beauty of his native city, one that has been known through the ages as La Serenissima. Along with such ultrafamiliar pieces as the "Winter" largo movement from The Four Seasons (in which the violin sighs a rapturous melody against sounds imitating a crackling, cozy fire) and the Largo of the Guitar Concerto in D--Vivaldi's slow movements, with all their gentle dreaminess, being given the limelight in this compilation--are many gems you've likely not heard before. The list of performers and approaches is too expansive even to mention but predominantly features performances by I Musici. It's hard to believe that Vivaldi's music, having sunk into oblivion, resurfaced again only a few decades ago. This is a pleasant compilation that makes a perfect entrée if you'd like to learn more about classical music--and Vivaldi in particular--than The Four Season. More of Vivaldi's great music........2001-08-24

When it comes to Vivaldi's works, the majority of people usually tend to associate him solely with composing the Four Seasons. However, this particular cd will introduce classical music lovers to other music that he composed for various stringed instruments, including the violin and cello. It does include a section from Winter of the Four Seasons, but the rest is other music that some may not be too familiar with. For a low price, you'll be getting a great selection of music.

I don't really know a lot about classical music even though I listen to a lot of it. All I can say is that every piece on this collection evokes a tremendous amount of peace and happy emotion. I listen to it in my office, and that in combination with my new fountain.... better than Prozac. My favorite piece is "Concerto for Guitar in D major: Largo" (sample #2 above). Highly recommend!

Heard "Four Seasons"? Want more? GET THIS!.......1999-03-16

Almost everyone knows Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". If you love that gorgeous piece of music, than I say your next purchase should be this! It is a gorgeous collecton of string quartets along with flutes and very impressive classical guitar. I put it on whenever I need to be taken away from this world, or when I need some artistic inspiration.

Must buy for rare cover alone!.......2006-05-11

This special EP was released around Valentines Day in the very late 90's at Walmart. It was an exclusive single and since I am a TRUE Mariah fan, I had to get it.

Do You Know Where You're Going (From Mahogany) is a rare track not found anywhere else and therefore ALL Mariah fans should own this!

That other reviewer who said this should only be for people who are not fans should be ashamed of themselves! How can us Mariah fans get this rare cover without buying this promo? Think about it!

Anyway, I love this cover of Do You Know Where You're Going To! Mariah's vocals are flawless and she hits those high notes like no other singer!

Vision Of Love is one of my all time favorites! It made Mariah a star and it was her first number one single!

Underneath The Stars is an amazing ballad from her Daydream album, very romantic and I love it!

My All is from the Butterfly album and it's one of my favorite ballads from her! Amazing vocals!

Babydoll is another song from Butterfly and it's a really good R&B song! I just love the music and the way Mariah sings!

This is for all Mariah fans, especially for this rare cover! Buy it today!

Perfect if you aren't a hardcore fan..........2005-09-09

If you aren't really a fan of Mariah Carey and are interested in what's so special about her, I definetely recommend this CD. It's a cheap little sampler of basically what Mariah's all about- great vocals and great arrangements. Four out of the five songs are from her previous albums, so you're basically getting four of her greatest hits. So if you're not a big fan, and aren't ready to invest in the 2-disc greatest hits set, buy this first, see if you like it, and then move on to her full albums. Overall, it's a pretty good CD with some highlights from Mariah's career.

This Ep has some great songs on it. if u are a Mariah fan you probably have all the other songs on other albums. The last song Do You Know Where Youre Going To, was released on the Australian version of 1's a few years ago. I really only bought this because of the gorgeous cover.

This is a really good EP that has some of Mariah's greatest love songs on it. It also has "Do You Know Where You're Going To" which isn't on any other OF Mariah's US releases.

Well sequenced set of mostly not so typical love songs. My only reservation for a 5th star is a matter of taste. You be the judge of that. This Rhino compilation is so cheap you'll have nothing to lose.

A noisy, flawed gem.......2002-03-30

Valentines is comprised of mostly noisy guitar-bass-drums numbers, a similar setup to Torch of the Mystics, but a lot less accessable. If it were recorded better, it might be a better record ultimately, as much of what's going on you can't really hear too well. The major exception to this (and, in my opinion, the best track on the album) is "Sev Acher," a mellow eastern-flavored number which, while not the best fidelity, lacks the ultra-noise distortion of the other tracks. If you can penetrate the sheer walls of noise, "Black Tent" is intense and compelling, "On The Sign" is danceable (!), and the rest provide for an interesting, if difficult, listening experience.

I first heard this CD on the local "Off the Wall" radio
show from Marshfield, Ma. (WATD-FM) some years ago. The full,
rich sound will tingle your spine! The distinctive
voice of Barrett and the Bass musings are other worldly!
Imaginative group sounds and free harmonies are among
the best you will hear (evocative of the feelings on the
Harptones', "You can depend on me....".) Listen in your
car in the early evening, just as the sun is setting -
you will transcend the limitations of ordinary experience
- be swept off to those long ago days when your best girl
was waiting....And later, when the front house lights blink,
.....You will kiss her tenderly and
say the immortal words..."Please my Darling....Don't

Great 50's Doo-Wop.......1999-02-17

Although the Valentines never had a nationally charted record, they were immensely popular in their native New York City in the mid-50's. The Valentines were formed when songwriter and lead singer Richard Barrett joined up with a quartet previously known as the Dreamers. Their first record on Old Town went nowhere and they switched to Rama Records where this CD picks them up. In 1955-57 Rama released 7 Valentines singles written by Barrett. The first was the classic uptempo doo-wop "Lily Maebelle" and the most popular was "Woo Woo Train". Both sides of every Valentines record were very good doo-wop. The group disbanded after Barrett decided to concentrate on producing records instead of singing.This CD contains all the Rama sides except "Christmas Prayer", "I Cried, Oh Oh" and "Nature's Creation". However, it does include an alternate take of "Nature's Creation". The CD claims it contains 3 other previously unreleased sides even though the Gribin/Schiff reference book states these 3 were released on a Murray Hill LP in 1986. The 3 are "If You Love Me, Pretty Baby", "The Joe Smith Theme" and "Sweetheart of Mine". The liner notes provide a goodly amount of information about the Valentines and their music, but the focus is clearly on Richard Barrett.Of particular interest to anyone like me who grew up in the Boston area in the late 50's is that 65 second gem called "The Joe Smith Theme". Joe Smith was the #1 Rock and Roll diskjockey in Boston at that time, first at WVDA/WEZE (1260) in the afternoon and in the evening, and then at WMEX (1510) evenings only before ending his on-air career at WILD (1090) afternoons only after the payola debacle. Joe began his evening shows with that Valentine's theme song. Until this CD, I had not heard that theme song for about 40 years. For me, that one cut was worth the price of the CD.

Just Okay.......2004-03-29

Well, I picked up this album looking for something fun to listen to. I guess I got it, but sadly it wasn't as good as I expected. Don't get me wrong, this album is fun on many levels, but its not one of those that you would listen to over and over again. I did enjoy the "Wait for summer" song, and of course "All you get". A lot of their songs kind of sound the same, but The Red Hot Valentines are still pretty new, so let's hope they grow a little before their next album comes out. So, buy this album if you want a few catchy songs to listen to.

I am a little biased since I am from the band's area, but I bought the album a few days ago and it is really good! If you like "poppy punk" stuff....enjoy, it is a great listen that keeps dragging you in (like weezer's blue album or a good 'get-up kids' track). However, if you are looking for something deeper.....search on.

I can't recommend this CD enough. The band has a strong local following around the University of Illinois, but otherwise you've never heard them. You will soon, however. It's happy bouncing power pop with some keyboards to keep it interesting.

These guys are red hot!.......2003-07-17

Straight from the city that brought you "REO Speedwagon" comes another of Champaign's great bands. This is pop at it's best, right out of the early 80's. Great harmony combined with catchy lyrics, what more can anyone pop fan ask for. It's hard to believe that they played at the local high school prom this spring! Look out; here they come.

Great companion work to "Sweet Ona Rose".......2000-04-28

This ep showcases this Portland, Oregon singer/songwriters solo act. More sedate and acoustically oriented than his full length, it is still a gem. Check out "Sweet Ona Rose" for Pete backed by his band, the Gossamer Wings, with a fuller and more often upbeat tempo. His former bands Hazel and Golden Delicious are also great to check out if you like this.

If youve never seen Pete Krebs live, you are missing out on one of the most amazing live musical experiences you will ever have. To me, Pete is a more dynamic musician than the oft-compared-to Elliott Smith, with a down-to-earth friendly smile to warm your heart and ever-a funny quip to accompany the tunes. This CD highlights Pete's beautiful voice, particularly on "Powderkeg", and the last track. Such a sweet voice wrenches out my heart and makes me smile inside and out with its honesty and beauty. By far one of the top Pacific Northwest solo artists today. If you like this album, check out his first raw solo album, specifically, the songs "Suction Cup Hearts", and "Shytown". And never miss a show of his if he's in your town!

This cd was a great buy. I listen to a lot of Elliott Smith, so i was turned on to Pete Krebs through some recommendations from fellow Elliott listeners. He is a lot like Elliott, if you know his music. Great voice, nice acoustic guitar!

Beautiful, timeless, & melancholy.......2006-01-05

MC&V's second album doesn't disappoint. From the graceful sad notes of 'Valentine Song' & 'Always Something New' to the jaunty beat of 'Mama, I Don't Want To Go Insane' & 'Land Beyond The Sea', these guys have tremendous range, musical dexterity, and intelligent lyrics that suggest a life lived, a soul travelled, a heart broken.

Some of my favorite lyrics from this album include:

"I've been looking for an answer / in every drop of wine / and the whiskey shines like gold / but there's no way / it could ever keep my heart from feeling lonely all the time / oh mama I don't want to go insane"

"When I was younger / I was such a sight to see / when I believed that I could win"

I've introduced these guys to men and women, from their twenties to their fifties, and they've all been moved by the great lyrics and Matty's voice, which is like pure warm honey. This album is a treasured part of my collection, and its tracks are played all the time on my iPod.
