4 out of 5 stars Revisiting Górecki .......2005-12-05

Henryk Górecki's stunningly beautiful and popular Symphony No. 3, 'Of Sorrowful Songs', has enjoyed more recordings after the initial success of the Zinman/Upshaw recording and awards, and it is easy to overlook these alternatives if one owns the 'gold standard' of the work.

In this performance by Yuri Simonov conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra the soloist is the redoubtable Susan Gritton and her involvement in the poetry is complete yet never overstated. This is a lovely, pliant voice used with sensitivity and intelligence and easily soars over the rich orchestral underpinnings. Likewise Siminov's tempi though a bit more brisk than on other recordings fit the moods of the 'songs' very well. And an added pleasure of this recoding is the inclusion of the hauntingly beautiful 'Three Pieces in Olden Style'.

Perhaps the real test of a work's durability is aided in comparing various interpretations. This recording is a viable alternative to the Zinman/Upshaw classic and deserves attention.
