Yuri Simonov 's Khachaturian.......2004-08-01
This CD, which i suspect is a reissue, brings very sensitive takes on the music of Aram Khachaturian. The Royal Philharmonic has the 'right touch' as they underline the various moods and contrasts of these scores ; the direction by Yuri Simonov is articulate and deals correctly with the sometimes emphatic music. This record shows the prospective listener why the Gayne Suite is so much more than mere 'circus music' (Kubrik's Space Odyssey uses the Adagio from that Suite to great effect). The Masquerade parts are also played beautifully. The sound is detailed and fairly generous--both in terms of dynamic range and transparency. A similar program led by Anichanov (Naxos 554054) is one of the discs i'd recommend, though i must admit to prefer the Regis/Simonov. A great version of the Gayne Suite by Dorati [LSO] remains a classic of the gramophone (Mercury/Philips 434323). Fistoulari's Gayne (Everest) is also recommended, although it won't challenge the firm grip and sparkling sound of Neeme Jarvi (Chandos 8542). Conductor Tjeknavorian (ASV 773) offers a similar program to Simonov but with more authority and wit. Temirkanov [RPO] is also a clear recommendation (EMI) for first-rate performance and sound. I have no clue about Stanley Black's version issued on Decca Eloquence. Perhaps the greatest of them all is still the composer's own with the majestic Vienna Philharmonic (Decca) that sets a standard for interpretation and technique. The latter is a long term resident on the Super Disc List. The Decca/Khachaturian is a personal favourite (as is the Mercury/Dorati for Gayne). In sum, i surely appreciate the good dose of music from the Regis/Simonov CD. His is not the most supercharged or dramatic Khachaturian i've heard, and if it feels somewhat more relaxed or restrained than is usual, then it doesnt lack excitement nor does it cut down musical integrity. At mid-price this CD is reasonably competitive, enough so to warrant further investigation.
