Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31
This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.
When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.
This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.
Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.
Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01
I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.
How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07
Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

Customer Reviews:
A Winner!.......2003-09-06
One of the joys of reviewing lots of classical CDs is the discovery of excellent music by composers one never heard of. That's the case here. Tomas Svoboda (b. 1939) was born in Paris of Czech parents, spent his early childhood in Boston, but returned to Czechoslovakia with his parents after the War and was admitted to the Prague Conservatory in 1954. He returned to the US in 1964, studied with Halsey Stevens and Ingolf Dahl at USC and for many years has been professor of composition at the Portland State University, retiring in the late 1990s. It is fitting that this program of his orchestral music is played by the Oregon Symphony under its long-time conductor, James DePreist. And brilliantly played it is.
All of the music here is immediately attractive, written in a kind of tonal neo-classic style melded with the assymetric rhythms often associated with the followers of Stravinsky. None of the musical language is more advanced than, say, Bartok's 'Concerto for Orchestra.'
The earliest piece, and in its way the most astonishing, is the Symphony No. 1, written and premiered in Prague under Vaclav Smetacek when the composer was a boy of sixteen. It is a stunningly assured four-movement piece of large proportions lasting 36 minutes with only occasional moments of clumsiness. It is rhythmically alive, uses some Czech folk materials, but at moments has the sound of America's wide open spaces a la Aaron Copland, fitting because the symphony is subtitled 'Of Nature.'
The most recent piece here is the Concerto for Marimba, written in 1993 for Oregon Symphony percussionist Niel DePonte, the expert soloist here. The concerto is a three-movement (Slow-Fast-Slow) work lasting about 26 minutes. The orchestration is masterful and inventive. A five-instrument 'keyboard' group consisting of piano, harp, celesta, orchestra bells and crotales placed on the stage close to the marimba soloist contribute shimmering and jazzy effects.
The opening piece on the CD is reported to be Svoboda's most-played piece. Entitled 'Overture of the Season,' it was written in 1978 and, again, premiered by the Oregon Symphony. It is an infectious celebratory 9-minute romp that introduced by raffish brass, often playing in the overlapping medodic lines made familiar by composers like Glass and Reich, but it has harmonic richness that mark it as something more than minimalist. Its rhythms are as catchy as they are complex. Its energy is a perfect concert opener and it is played by the Oregon Symphony with all the panache the score requires.
I am delighted to make the acquaintance of the music of Tomas Svoboda and will look for more to investigate. I understand that there are recordings of two piano concertos, one of them by the composer, himself a fine pianist and listed as one of the orchestral keyboardists for the present recording.
Heartily recommended.

best complete box set of Schuberts masses for the price.......2006-11-10
The five cds in this set comes beautifully packaged in carton sleeves in a space saving cardboard box with a thin plastic covering. There are several different performers in this set but they all are good. The sound quality is great although not quite excellent. Everything but the German mass was recorded in 1996. The german mass was recorded in 1975 and is an analog recording, but it sure doesn't sound like it.
The instruments are heard loud and clear, but it sounds as though the mic is too far away from the singers sometimes. It is still good though, a much better deal than the vox box that costs almost as much. This one also comes with a few extras and a complete German mass that the Vox Box set seems to lack. It's too bad there are no samples for this one, everyone buys the one with the samples but if you just take a chance on this one, you won't be disappointed.

Traditional musicianship at its finest.......2005-08-10
I first heard The Trail Band on the Oregon Trail (of all places!). It was actually the last night on Cycle Oregon in about 2000 in the town of Dufur. They were on stage with Mt. Hood in the backround and absolutely electrified the crowd on a cool autumn evening. Their musicianship was superlative and radiated over the wheat fields of central Oregon like radiant diamonds. Their albums capture this music superbly (though capturing that evening would be impossible). Highly recommended.
Wonderful Recording of Old-Time Music.......2002-12-03
I bought this as a cassette years ago when we first vacationed in Oregon. We've listened to it for years and love it. There are fun sing-along type songs that the family really enjoys, and I cry evey time I listen to "What We Left Behind". I really like the sound of this group - it's 'old-time' music, but it has a beautiful sound, not 'twangy' but rich and mellow. I'm thrilled to find these recordings in CD-format and I'm sure you'll enjoy them.
TRAIL BAND CAPTURES OREGON TRAIL IN A SPECIAL WAY.......2000-07-30
I bought this CD at a museum along the Oregon Trail during the summer of 1999. What a wonderful collection of music and readings from diaries. Includes music ranging from the spirit of adventure to the despair of weary travelers. Also includes Native American music. I must say that listening to this CD while traveling the Oregon Trail, made the trip more memorable. however, listening to this CD at home, one is transported back to the days of those who crossed the country...and one is reminded of the Native Americans. Great for adults and children. As an educator, I would recommend this CD for social studies. I would also recommend this CD for musical groups who would be inspired to take a period in history and create music in the spirit of the music of that time. Good for language arts due to the spoken diary entries. Well worth the multiple listenings. Thank you Trail Band.

A fantastic interpretation!.......2001-10-29
This is definately one of the best recordings of Sousa's music available! It has a massive track listing of 25 works, ranging from the old standards like "The Thunderer" to some rarely played gems like "A Century of Progress".
As far as the musical interpretation goes, I'd say this is one of the best I've heard. The band is slightly heavier in woodwinds than brass, which is just how Sousa liked it. In his band, Sousa used nearly 20 clarinets but only 4 or 5 trumpets. Also, the tempos are taken slightly slower than many Americans are used to. But marches are intended for marching military units who like to proceed at a more comfortable clip than 140 beats per minute.
My only negative comment is that in a few points in the CD, the piccolo is a bit on the heavy side. But atleast he is always in tune!
Fine effort, but something's missing.......2000-10-25
This CD has a lot going for it. Here are Sousa's best marches all in one place, played by an excellent military brass band. That this band is as British as they come simply adds some curiosity value. The sound quality is crystal-clear. Overall, a fine effort.
However, something's missing. The tempi seem just a hair too slow at times, especially on Stars & Stripes Forever. Moreover, Stars & Stripes lacks a certain swagger that we've all come to expect. They don't miss by much, so this is a minor quibble with the performance.

Look Out, Fritz!.......2003-02-18
Respighi's Pines and Fountains are very well represented on disk, and Fritz Reiner's 1959 recording with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is generally (and rightfully) considered the best of the lot, both technically and musically.
I've had a love affair with the Reiner recording for years and thought I had no real reason to look elsewhere. Now along comes James DePreist and his fabulous Oregon Symphony Orchestra with a version that actually made me set ol' Fritz aside for a while and give the newcomer several turns.
Don't shy away because of the relative obscurity of the Oregon Symphony. DePreist has been with them since 1980 and has built them into a tremendous orchestra. Speaking of DePreist, he is a national treasure and definitely among the finest conductors in the world today. Were he in New York or Boston, he might be a national hero. On this disc, he gets unbelievably powerful, beautiful, and committed playing from the OSO.
As I said earlier, the Reiner is rightfully considered the finest recording of these pieces. It has stood the test of time and no American orchestra/conductor combination has ever put out virtuosity like the CSO/Reiner team. But, for a while, James DePreist and the Oregon Symphony caused me to allow my ear to wander. Don't pass up this experience.
Breathtakingly beautiful.......2001-07-01
It's been my privilege to have produced two thirds - Pines and Fountains - of this shimmeringly beautiful recording. I don't know another recording that has both the transparency and power that James DePreist brings to this music, not to mention the superb playing of the Oregon Symphony. The clarinet solo in the Pines 3rd movement still takes my breath away after many hearings. This recording - and I don't say this about all - was a joy to produce and remains a treat to hear.

Pure kornGOLD..........2006-05-23
At the end of WWII Wolfgang Korngold retired from films and focused the remainder of his life(D.1957)on composing concert music. At that time of completion his massive late-romantic Symphony in F-Sharp was almost completely ignored, in favor of more fashionable chamber works(sparser orchestration)by others. Though ridiculed for his continual tonal writing the F Symphony became one of the gems of the post war era.
The opening dissonant chords however appear atonal until the clarinet introduces a haunting first subject theme, which in my opinion could have used further development. It seemingly being hatched in the middle of chaos and tense development. On a whole the first movement takes on a sinister forboding ambiance. One will feel alot more secure with the goose bump heroic theme brought forth by the horns following a lively tarantella. This scherzo is orchestrated to great effect and is one of my favorite all-time symphonic movements. In the adagio, taking cues from his mentor, Mahler; Korngold provides a overpowering solemn, somber furneral march. This derived from the death march of his 1939 score "The Private Lives of Elisabeth and Essex". There are three different climaxes that form the tragic mood. The finale is a joyous rondo using a dance like main theme borrowed from his score to "Kings Row" and recapitulated material from the earlier movements. This all making for an emotional musical rollercoaster ride of a symphony. For certain Korngold never foregoes his film music roots. You can say the whole package is movie music without a movie. Create your own fantasy, immerse youself in his symphonic bath. Included is a short suite from the best swashbuckler ever,"The Sea Hawk" which I think should have followed the symphony as an encore, rather than precede it.
Delos gives us good expansive sound characteristic for this kind of music. DePriest and his Oregon Symphony seem comptetent enough. A note: Korngold's daughter Kathrin joins the strings for this 1997 recording. Excellent liner notes by Brendon Carroll author of Korngold's bio the "Last Prodigy" adds to the authenticity.
Prefer Korngold more layed back? Then this CD is for you!.......1999-05-17
As an Erich Wolfgang Korngold (EWK) film-score enthusiast, I bought the CD to listen only to the Sea Hawk "suite"; that the Symphony in F-Sharp came along with it didn't much matter. Boy, did I get a surprise! On a scale of five, the CD rates an average 3-1/2 stars (five for being recorded by a "regional" orchestra---more on this later; 3-1/2 for performance; and two for sound quality). The snippets from EWK's score for The Sea Hawk (1940) are laconic, suffer from inferior recording/ mixing, and have been recorded many times before. Aside from the hard-to-find "classic" versions on BMG conducted by Mr. Charles Gerhardt in the 70's--if you can find ANYTHING with Mr. Gerhardt conducting, buy it immediately!--the best modern recording is on Varese Sarabande with Mr. Varujan Kajian conducting the Utah Symphony (another "regional"). If you're just discovering EWK's film music, you'll definitely want to own all of these. The third movement of the Symphony is its best--particularity fortunate for film fans, since it offers what the last part of EWK's score for Elizabeth and Essex (1939) might have sounded like had Korngold scored it himself (a highly-recommended, modern recording of the film score is on Varese Sarabande with Mr. Carl Davis conducting the Munich Symphony). This movement is exceptionally beautiful, but uniquely presented in a touchingly-haunting, and dream-like manner that is in dramatic contrast to the sound-track music (which addresses how the Queen finally manages to isolate the head of the Essex problem). Would I buy this CD again if a Rottweiler ate it? You bet! In fact, I'd buy two copies, since The Oregon Symphony--like a number of other not-as-well-known, regional orchestras (both in the US and Europe)--has had the creative enlightenment, originality, and flat-out courage to help bring back EWK's music.
