Album Description

Ulrich Herkenhoff was born in 1966 in Osnabrueck, Germany. He had his first piano lesson at the age of six and, at 14, he first saw the pan flute in a concert given by the Rumanian, Gheorghe Zamfir. This inspired him to intensively study the instrument allowing him to eventually achieve the reputation as „the best non-Rumanian pan flute virtuoso". After studying the flute at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich and subsequently the pan flute in an advanced class with Prof. Jochen Gaertner, Ulrich Herkenhoff rapidly become an internationally renowned soloist. He received special assistance from Georghe Zamfir`s discoverer, the Swiss music ethnologist and publisher, Marcel Cellier, to study and promote Rumanian folklore. In 1990, he recorded his first CD of Rumanian improvisations with Cellier on the organ. With his interpretations of „classical" works, Ulrich Herkenhoff has inspired many contemporary composers to pen original compositions for the the pan flute.

THE ART OF PAN is his ambitious project to see the pan flute established as a serious concert instrument. In 1992, he was honored with the Gastieg culture circle`s recognition and, in 1996, with the Bavarian state`s prize for young artists. In 2000, the German Phonographic Academy awarded him a much coveted Echo, the classic prize as soloist of the year. Herkenhoff has also become in demand for film music. Among the many films he has been involved with is the Oscar winning Lord of the Rings. His latest contribution was in 2004. in Budapest, performing Ennio Morricone`s music for the film version of Imre Kertsz`s book Fateless. Herkenhoff is also dedicated to the academic advancement of the pan flute, having published many works for the pan flute. He has made all the instruments he plays himself.

The team Horenstein-Wild achieved a very remarkable distinction with this set of Rachmaninov Piano Concertos. Maybe Wild was too analytical, reserving the excessive Romantic burden for determined passages. To my mind the best interpretations are the First and Fourth ones; in the Third did not play the Diabolic Cadenza(and that is at least for me, a cruel deception) and the Second has unbeatable performers (The two well known versions of Richter and the sublime live recording of Kapell-Bernstein in a recent edition of Music &Arts never released before in 2004).

In what Paganini concerns, forget about it; Kapell-Reiner still maintanis its absolute leadership.

As a pianist with an affinity for the romantic, my introduction to Earl Wild and Rachmaninov was when, in the 1960s, my mother bought us the Readers Digest set of records (when they first came out) from which this CD is made -- it was love at first sight (hearing)! (Guess who took the records with him when he went off to college??!). I thought these were wonderful recordings and interpretations when I first heard them (despite my youth and inexperience then), and now approx. 40 years later (having heard a number of other recordings in the intervening years), my opinion is unchanged. Being a romantic pianist in the spirit of Rachmaninov and Horowitz, Earl Wild sets a very high standard here. It doesn't get any better than this. Only two regrets -- the lack of the full uncut version of the 3rd (the cuts were sanctioned by the composer in a time when audience attention spans were not nearly so long as they are today), and the notable and very regrettable absence of the Isle of the Dead from this CD (which was also on the original set of 1960s records -- an evocative, exciting tone poem in its own right, rendered as well or better than any other I've heard by Horsenstein and company. Wild's 1st and 2nd concerti and Rhapsody from this set are the best I've heard and are still the standard by which I judge other performances of the same pieces (ditto for the Isle of the Dead).

very good brilliant good sounding account of these rachmaninov works, as brilliant as these pieces can sound! little or no sentalmentalities, definitely deserves a place in any rachmaninov collection, holds its own place very strongly against such performances by richter, argerish, rachmaninov, ashkenazy, and horowitz just to name a few

Passionate and lively, Wild plays the best 2nd that I've ever heard. I do however prefer Argerich's 3rd to his. As for his 1st, 4th, and Rhapsody, I'm not as familiar with others' recordings although the few that I've heard aren't as good as his. This CD is a MUST own for Rach fans, and a good starting point for those new to him.

I've yet to listen to many others' verisons of the 1st, 4th, or Rhapsody, although of the few that I have (Ashkenazy, Horowitz, Rach himself) his are better (recording-wise for Rach). This CD is a MUST own for any fan of Rachmaninoff, or it is a good starting point for anyone new to him.
