One can find a host of versions of the music of St. Hildegard. They are mostly recorded by professional ensemble with roots in the hallowed halls of academics. If one really wants to experience these very complex compositions as they were meant to be sung, I highly recommend the recording by the Benedictine Nuns of the abbey bearing her name. These women live, much as St. Hildegard did in her day, a life in the rhythm of prayer and work. A sense of peace and dignity infuses this cd for it exudes something which the others do not - authentic prayer. It is set in the larger context of monastic life. By no means are the nuns, however, inferior in their academics. Nuns of the abbey work on critical editions of her writings as well as undertake a thorough study of the paleography of Gregorian chant. Prof. Goeschl is one of the leading researchers in the field of paleography and restitutions of the original Gregorian melodies as indicated in the neumes in ancient manuscripts. He is a longtime companion of musical development in the abbey. I recommend this recording highly.
