5 out of 5 stars THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FILM PIANO MUSIC.......2007-04-11

MOST OF THE FILMS FOR WHICH THESE PIANO PIECES WERE WRITTEN ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE, SO WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE THIS WONDERFUL RECORDING. FORGET ABOUT MORE EXPENSIVE VERSIONS. THIS IS THE BEST INTERPRETATION OF THE WARSAW CONCERTO ON THE MARKET!

3 out of 5 stars Warsaw Concerto.......2005-10-09

The version of the toon was not what I expected. I wanted more the "popular" version.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Movie Pieces.......2003-10-04

I am a pinaist, and several of thses pieces find themselve in my repertoire, and by hearing them on this cd, one is able to truly appreciate the composition and performance of these songs, which are not very popular nowadays. A great collection that I highly recommend to all musicians and music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.......2003-02-07

If you like light works for piano and orchestra, this is the BEST I have heard. With the popularity of movie themes in this genre, this CD will not disappoint you. There are some great undiscovered gems on this CD. Every pianist should have this to 'expand their horizons'. Simply the best!

Album Description

Quartetto Gelato are one of Canada's best selling and most acclaimed classical artists, having sold over 150,000 units internationally. Since their debut in 1994, Quartetto Gelato has won the hearts of audiences worldwide with their unique blend of sparkling technique, musical finesse and humor.

Quartetto Gelato have had sold-out repeat performances in New York, Washington, Vancouver, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, Calgary, Tokyo, Edmonton, Seoul and Hong Kong.

The group now consists of original members Cynthia Steljes on oboe and English horn, tenor Peter De Sotto on vocals and violin and new members Alexander Sevastian (three-time first prize-winner of the International Accordion Competition) on accordion and piano and Kristina Reiko Cooper (Doctorate of Music from the Juilliard School of Music and winner of the 1999 Walter M. Naumberg Chamber Music Competition) on cello.

Their latest release "Travels the Orient Express" follows the route of the storied train that runs from London to Istanbul. The songs change and shift in theme and style as the scenery would outside the traveler's compartment window. Travels the Orient Express is an exciting musical journey for the listener.

Information on the band can be found on their website.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A long-awaited return.......2004-11-30

I love Quartetto Gelato, so perhaps I'm not the most objective reviewer. But I had some fears that the group might not be as great as it used to be after some personnel changes. I approached this CD with some trepidation.

QG is not the group it used to be, I must admit. But...the new QG is every bit as good as the original, just different now.

The CD is a great concept, a musical voyage on the classic Orient Express. The opening track, "Slow Train," represents London and is rather melancholy and sets the tone for a nostalgiac trip on a train voyage that (at least as far as I know) is no longer running. ("Slow Train" is by the British comedy team Flanders & Swann, an uncharacteristically solemn piece.)

Paris is represented by Ravel's "Tombeau de Couperin," brilliantly arranged, and by two familiar chestnuts, "La Vie en Rose" (giving Peter a chance to do Piaf), and "Under Paris Skies," giving new accordianist Alexander Sevastian a chance to strut his stuff.

"Konzertstuck" and "Rondo al1 Zingarese" give us a taste of Munich, and then cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper excels outrageously on Kreisler's "Tambourin Chinois," representing Vienna. Standing in for Budapest are Lehar's "Dein Ist Mein Ganzez Herz" and Kodaly's "Kallai Ketos".

My two favorite tracks come next. Bucharest is represented by an original piece, "Romanian Caravan," an energetic piece redolent of gypsy wagons and open fires. And "Turkish Carnival," for Istanbul, is another original piece, utterly intoxicating in its exotica, bringing images of odalisques, harem guards, and all the gaudy delights of the Near East.

The CD winds up with a return to the UK with "Danny Boy," bringing the voyage full circle.

Yes, it's light stuff, but it's good light stuff. I was once lucky enough to see QG live and they are a group who truly enjoys what they do, and their concerts have a sense of fun and delight that few classical performances have. Their CDs (I have them all) do capture some of that, and for that reason alone they're worth the attention of all classical music fans.

4 out of 5 stars A unique collection of film music.......2001-06-17

This recording is generally very well performed and produced. The playing of the BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba is very high caliber indeed. I am not a big fan of movie music, but I was glad I bought this CD.

I bought this album for the highlight selection, the Elegy for Viola and Orchestra from Lady Caroline Lamb. This piece is pure heaven. The only piece I know that is even somewhat similar is Vaughan-Williams' Flos Campi. The soloist, orchestra and conductor are magnificent in Bennett's work - this is reason enough to own this CD.

5 out of 5 stars delightful.......2001-02-13

I remember Bennett for his wonderful film scores for Nicholas and Alexandra(the fold-out LP album had a regal splendour to it) and Lady Caroline Lamb. Marcus Dodds conducted the Lamb score with the New Philharmonia Orchestra on LP (Angel S-36946) - now out of print. Gamba`s conducting is marvellous on this Chandos re-recording. But Dodds is unsurpassed for his romantic and passionate handling, with Peter Mark giving an intense interpretation of the Caroline theme. Overall, the LP has

greater presence and tension. Well, soundtrack recordings are usually more impassioned and sensitive than re-recordings. Still, credit should go to Gambas for his consistent high quality in the Chandos film music series. Incidentally, the Lamb LP recording is listed in the Library of Congress (No. 73-750111). If you can`t get the LP try that Library!

5 out of 5 stars A Trip On The Orient Express.......2007-04-05

The soundtrack is great just as the movie! When you listen to the musical score you see the movie again in your mind. A wonderful cast of stars to go along with the music.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Score Beautifully Recorded.......2005-11-30

For MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, Richard Rodney Bennett could have arranged a 1930's pastiche score and left it at that. Instead, he created an entirely original score, by turns melodious and atonal, to enhance the classic murder mystery on screen. The Overture certainly does, to quote Bennett himself, "give one the sense of excitement and anticipation that one felt in the theatre, as a child, before the curtain went up," while the main theme of "The Orient Express" combines a joyous waltz with an ominous woodwind motif that tells of dark deeds to come. "The Reenactment" and "The Murder" consist of some of the eeriest music ever heard in a film (as frightening - if not more so - as much of Bernard Herrmann's score for PSYCHO). At other times, the score is impressionistically beautiful, as in the Puccini-esque "Stamboul Ferry." Bennett impressively handles both music under dialogue (in "The Orient Express," for example, or "Princess Dragomiroff") and leitmotifs (the nervous string motif associated with the villain of the piece, acted by Richard Widmark). In short, this is a brilliant score. But what truly raises the soundtrack to the highest level is the grandly scaled playing of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, led by Marcus Dods. The 1974 recording matches the orchestra in quality, with each instrument clearly audible. Thus, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is a remarkable original soundtrack recording in more ways than one.

5 out of 5 stars Christie Music at its Best!.......2005-09-01

"Murder on the Orient Express" was the one that really started the whole Agatha Christie craze at the movies, but none can top this one. I really love this soundtrack; it captures the real mood of this movie. From the excellent mood piece, "Kidnapping" to the majestic "The Orient Express", this soundtrack has just about everything for the lover of this movie. On most soundtracks you listen to some cuts and skip the others, but this one has such a variety of mood music that you'll want to hear it all.

5 out of 5 stars The genius of Sir Rodney Benet!!.......2005-06-10

This film is perfect; and one of its undeniable virtues was precisely his admirable soundtrack. Exquisite in all the extension of the word. Absolutely gratifying and recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Orient Express - Delightful!.......2004-06-10

I remember enjoying the movie when it first came out, as a matter of fact, it was the first movie on VCR I purchased; I guess that makes me really old! I loved the soundtrack, and you can almost hear the steam engine being fired, as it prepares to leave Paris. My vinyl copy has been gone for years, so I was delighted to stumble across it here. I have played it a number of times in the two weeks I have had it, and copied it to my MP3 player also. It is a great recording!

4 out of 5 stars Waited a long time.......2007-05-13

I always loved the song "1900 Yesterday" but could not find it anywhere, including the on-line music services. When I received the CD I was a little disappointed because I didn't see any other originals besides 1900. They were all covers of other artist's songs. Then I listened and have to say I was very pleased with their renditions and found a number of them that I thought much better than the versions done by other artists. All in all. It's worth the price. Good listening.

5 out of 5 stars smooth and easy.......2006-06-07

I bought this cd for the song "1900 yesterday",and was pleasantly surprised by the other quality, smooth, easygoing music of this group. It comes with a little booklet about Liz and her band, somewhat interesting, but the real worth in this cd is the easylistening music and songs.I remember some of these songs ,but not all of them, but they are all good and enjoyable, and a reasonably priced cd is this, most likely to be enjoyed by a good number of people.

5 out of 5 stars Liz Damon Enters the Music Scene Again!.......2006-04-18

I have been a Liz Damon and the Orient Express fan even before seeing them in their home state of Hawaii. 1900 Yesterday was very popular on radio in Houston, Texas. Their mellow melodic kind of pop music sounds great even today. I was so excited to find that finally their music had been transferred to CD. I have their original release albums, but do not listen to vinyl anymore. One of the best groups EVER!

5 out of 5 stars Reminiscing.......2006-04-01

This music actually means more to my Mom & Dad. Since they are not computer users I am writing on their behalf.

They had a trip to Hawaii in the early 70's and ran across the Orient Express in an Island bar. Although they enjoy all of the music, they are particularly enamored with a song that they have had considerable difficulty in finding. This goodie is called something like "Quiet Sounds" or "The Quiet Sounds". Although they have most of the lyrics down they are on a sincere search for either the 45, music, album, anything that contains this specific song. If anyone knows how to obtain anymore information, I'd appreciate some assistance. THANKS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Liz Damon & The Orient Express's 33-RPM record of 1970.......2005-07-08

I first heard Liz Damon, her sister, and band in the outside bar and stage area along the beach of the Hilton Hawaiian Village when I was on R&R from my tour in Vietnam. I came to Honolulu's Waikiki Beach in October 1970, and experienced an instant LOVE for this band, while I was enjoying my priceless time with my wife Yvonne, after not seeing her since April 1st. The up-beat yet mellow sounds of Liz and her Orient Express was hypnotic and I found myself deeply in-touch with their sound. I did not have to be prompted to buy one of their albums (33-RPM), and have it today. It's been through a flood in our home, and the record is ever so slightly warped, but still playable. THAT, is why I had to buy their newly re-cut and sound re-mastered CD of the same album name. I had to hear their music again; this time in my car or portable player!!!

Their songs, "1900 Yesterday," is by far their best work on the album, although I'm VERY partial to their rendition of, "But For Love!!!" It's a VERY INTENSE and BUILDING work of musical coordination and harmony, and really gets you smack dab in the heart!

My email message from Amazon.com tells me I'll be waiting for 2-5 weeks for delivery. I hope that is not so, because I am really looking forward to hearing it play in my car as I drive down the road, reminiscent of my drive in the rental car convertible (Ford Fairlane, 1970) around Oahu that October 1970, with the air-conditioning on near full-blast, to match my musical speakers in the car, back then!

If you enjoy great harmony... great listening and sing-along music... and don't like to be blasted by overkill acid/hangover rock `n roll anymore... and just want to chill-out and be `moved,` .... then this is your album to buy.

5 out of 5 stars old wine in a new bottle.......2004-07-09

Fantastic CD! The oboist with this group continues to astound with each of their releases. I don't personally care for the vocal portions added to LeTombeau, but I wonder what Ravel might have thought? The 2 new members of the quartet really seem to pull their weight (and I really liked the former members!) The new accordionist just dazzles. This CD has something to offer for lovers of all musical flavors.

2 out of 5 stars All The Things You Aren't.......2006-12-03

I'm an avid collector of elevator music, but yet I loathe almost everything concocted by Andre Kostelanetz, and this cd is no exception.
Andre's version of "Chinatown" is downright gaudy with a free kitchen sink included. Percy Faith's interpretation of "Chinatown" is correct in it's subdued semblance of feeling, and much better than all the cheesy chintz on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars The best Chinatown EVER!!.......2005-04-13

After waiting almost 20 years for this album to be reissued, it's finally here. Never Can Say Goodbye is one of Kostelanetz's best albums of the early 70's. The title song is a wonderfully spirited with a pulsating disco beat. In an arrangement by Homer Dennison, this makes label mate Percy Faith's version sound dull by comparison. Another terrific arrangement is "At Long Last Love." This song is arranged by the great Eddie Sauter and Kosty pulls it off beautifully! But the absolute highlight this album is "The Theme from Chinatown." This is without question the finest arrangement of this song EVER! Abosolutely no other arranger can ever hope to top this lush and colorful arrangement. Arranged by Jack Pleis (who arranged for the vocal group The Four Aces,) Kostelanetz conducts in what is the best version of this song ever recorded. It is worth buying this album for this cut alone. Compare this Chinatown to label mate Percy Faith. Yes, Percy did write his own arrangement, but it is lacking in spirit, energy and drive. It is surprisingly dull for Percy Faith considering what a fine arranger he is. The album as a whole is excellent. One of Kosty's best efforts. The first half of the cd is good, but not as satisfying. The Godfather theme is much too slow. No comparison against the splendid Franck Pourcel version. There is a nice unreleased version of "All the Things You Are" and the rest of the album is nice, if not on the same level as the second album.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Kostelanetz Murder On The Orient Express/Never Can Say.......2005-04-11

This is 2 of Kostelanetz's best albums. The first album Murder On The Orient Express is based mostley on movie themes and also songs that were in movies i.e. Tenderly. The second album Never Can Say Goodbye is based on the then Today's Movies,Broadway Shows and Hits of 1975.Both albums are very lush and relaxing and are 2 of Kosty's best. When your listening to this cd you will think your listening to a b/ez station. Here is the info on the album.
