5 out of 5 stars I love these guys!!!.......2007-01-02

At first I did not know anything about LAGQ. I was taking an intro to guitar class on the campus of USC. One of my assignments was to attend two guitar performances happening on campus and write about each. I was so fortunate to have picked LAGQ. I fell in love with their music and their humor. I was amazed by the variety of sounds coming out of the guitars. Although guitar playing is a hobby for me... these guys inspire me to study the guitar more seriously. This is the first album of theirs I bought. Their rendition of Shenandoah is the best. It is so beautiful I fall asleep to it. Simple Gifts is the most lovely version too. Jumpin' at the Woodside is another favorite... it jazzy bounce makes it a popular choice for background music to any situation. The Main Street Electrical Parade never fails to delight me and surprise my friends when I play it. These guys are silly...but in a good way. Its 2007 now and I still go back to the songs on this album. Great variety. This is a good starter to a LAGQ collection. Go see them live if you can!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2004-11-23

Recently I learned about LAGQ and bought this album. I have been impressed by the arrangements and interpretation, the texture, innovative touches and originality. It is a treat!

3 out of 5 stars This is only a warning.......2004-09-19

The LAGQ are fine players, and the music here is first rate as a summary of what they do, or for any purpose. HOWEVER, the transfer to CD on my disc was very poorly chosen, so that the top octave and a half was mostly missing (worse on some pieces than others, though). This takes the snap! out of guitar strings and notably attenuates your ability to tell what the 4 are doing with guitar timbre and the like. So, if you have wide-range audio gear, you might want to look elsewhere for an introduction to these players.

5 out of 5 stars Recent Purchase that I'm Joyed to Find and Enjoy.......2001-01-27

Not until recently did I know about this guitar four. Hearing a number of their songs on internet classical radio, I decided I'd try this one.

What a great surprise --- their arrangements of Copeland to Sousa to Praetorius are excellent and in taste. I'll be venturing into their other works.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2000-06-12

LAGQ is wonderful and this CD is a great compilation of some of their best work to date. Extremely versatile musicians, they perform swing music, Sousa march music, a Main Street Electrical Parade tune from Disneyland, as well as music by Copland and Praetorius. It's amazing how they are able to produce the sounds they do. A great compilation and one that would nicely add to your LAGQ collection or a great CD to start that collection!

4 out of 5 stars A great CD for your collection.......2002-09-15

If you are a music teacher this CD is a must. If you aren't, it STILL is a must. This CD is full of light but amazing classical guitar. I can hardly wait to pop it in at Christmas. Even if you aren't a huge fan of classical guitar I bet this will amaze you so much you'll want to keep listening. LAGQ flawlessly performs countless dances you'll wonder how they do it. The music classroom can use the Renaissance music for medieval topics and dances. A great CD to have for some high quality back ground music - relaxing music.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful music.......2002-03-04

It just doesn't get better than this. If you want to hear Tchaikovsky played by super classical guitarists, this is the CD for you. Its the BEST!

4 out of 5 stars From Renaissance to Nutcracker is brilliant........1999-11-28

The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's Nutcracker Suite is a triumph for guitar arrangement. This selection is an excellent choice for one's holiday listening enjoyment. In the Renaissance dance suites included here, the L.A.G.Q. masterfully utilize a number of the percussive timbres available on the body of the classical guitar to complete the instrumentation and invoke the spirit of the pieces. Though the recording is not as loud as most of the other L.A.G.Q. recordings, the quality of the performances more than makes up for it.

If I read my Schwann catalog correctly, there are only three full CDs of Praetorius's Terpsichore, that exquisite early 17th-century disco collection, played on period instruments. This is a fine collection, up to date in performance practice and dancey enough in spirit. Unfortunately, it isn't much longer (50:30) than my other current favorite Terpsichore collection, by the New York Renaissance Band (Arabesque Z6531, 45:45). Perhaps these producers are worried that we'll wear ourselves out dancing to this music. But I find these bouncy pieces ideal to lift my spirits or to keep me alert nearly anytime. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Over-rated and over-priced disk.......2007-04-19

This disk lacks the medieval feel that I had hoped for. Many of the pieces sound baroque, similar to Handel's water music, with a lot of trumpets, and drums beating in a martial way. The rest are softer, but lack any real personality... they sound like a wind-up toy music box. I'm disappointed in the music, and unhappy with the disk.

5 out of 5 stars Unutterably divine........2003-07-02

Take a break from your worries. My recommendation: turn off all electrical lighting and place a few candles about in a darkened room. Take the phone off the hook and set the dogs to patrolling the yard. Be sure the ambient temperature is agreeable. Sip from a glass of wine, smoke a cigarette, slip on some good headphones and drift away. Your ears will thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Refreshing New Sounds to Modern Ears.......2002-10-02

Praetorius' collection of dance music is given here a marvelous interpretation and rendering on period instruments by Pickett and the New London Consort.

From one track to the next, it rings and warbles with sounds unlike we hear today, even in the age of synthesized output. These are just such catchy little ditties, you'll find they do lighten the load and get one tapping the feet and humming the tunes, if not even breaking out in dance.

This is simply outstanding and unique.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant CD!.......2002-01-27

This is an extraordinary recording of a fraction of the Praetorius Dances from "Terpsichore" (he didn't write them, he just collected them, and there are hundreds). They range from genteel courtly dances to rumbustious affairs that are the equivalent of modern disco and which make all the ornaments on my mantelpiece dance with joy. The disc crackles and buzzes with the most extraordinary and delicious sounds - shawms, crumhorns, hurdy-gurdys, racketts - all served with a very nice recording. Quite simply, a must-have

      5 out of 5 stars BROKEN CONSORT.......2004-01-29

This is a simply adorable record. A `broken consort' is a group of instruments of different types, which would, I suppose, make four of the Brandenburg concertos broken consorts. Where the various composers have not been specific as regards the instruments to be used (in most cases here), Christopher Ball and his colleagues have used their imagination to great effect. They are helped by an admirably clear recording, and it is hard to imagine who is not going to like the sound of the bass cornamuse, crumhorns, kortholts, ducaine and octavina. If there is one sound that particularly pleased me it was probably the percussion section, but the entire ensemble is brilliant.

It's easy to imagine a number of contexts for this record. Just as straight listening it is delightful. It would make good background music for general purposes, and I happen to know that it can be particularly effective at certain stages of a party, although care is advised about when to play Holborne's 'Wanton'. I like the fact that the selection is made from an international field of late-16th and early-17th century composers, and one gets the impression that this was a period of history when music was in a joyful and extrovert phase throughout Europe. What the scholars make of it I don't know, not having asked them. The instruments are patently made by experts and played by experts, the performers' enjoyment is infectious, and until I find out more about the whole period that will do me very well indeed. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent recording of skilled artists at their best.......2003-07-23

For those who love Renaissance Music, this is a must have.
I have a cassette version which dates back to the late-seventies and despite the limitations of that medium the strength of this performance comes shining through. Absolutely delighted to find it here on Amazon and on CD. The atmospheric percussion beats, particularly on the final Praetorius track "Spagnoletta and Bourree", will have you dancing an Elizabethan madrigal. You will be hard pressed to find a better recorded performance of these dances anywhere. Although not matching the Praetorius music in sheer scale, the Holborne tracks are equally well-played.

      4 out of 5 stars Embarrassing Error.......2005-01-21

Before commenting on the music on this disc, I should probably point out an embarrassing error of translation in the accompanying notes that causes booklet author Jerome Roche completely to misunderstand and misinterpret one of Praetorius's spiritual motets. The German text of the first verse of Track 11 is, "Erhalt uns Herr bei deinem Wort /und steur des Babsts und Türken Mord,/die Jesum Christum, deinen Sohn,/stürzen wollen von seinem Thron." Whoever translated this into English made a complete hash of it with following rendering: "Uphold us Lord in Your Word, and let the Pope and Turks be murdered for casting down Jesus Christ, Your Son, from His throne." But anyone familiar with both seventeenth-century German and Lutheran Church history will see that the correct translation should be, "Uphold us Lord in Your Word, and thwart the murderous plans [or, Stop the murderous attacks] of the Pope and the Turks who are attempting to cast down Jesus Christ, Your Son, from His throne." The German verb "steuern" used to mean to thwart or to hinder; and the noun Mord is still today not used with a genitive of the person to be murdered but of the person committing the murder.

All that need only worry the expert, but such are the prospective buyers of this disc, which was recorded in December 1973 and certainly does not reflect the way most people in today's early music scene would play Praetorius. But David Munrow was a pioneer, and this disc is a wonderful document of his enterprising spirit and musicality. He is here accompanied by a large team including such well-respected names as James Bowman, Charles Brett, David James, Martyn Hill, Michael Laird, Iaan Wilson, Alan Lumsden, Andrew van der Beek, Simon Standage, Trevor Jones, Christopher Hogwood and Peter Hurford, the instrumentalists among them playing all kinds of historical instruments of the kind that have only become known through the efforts of Munrow, Philip Pickett and others of the early music ilk. Munrow plays the excerpts from Terpsichore Musarum (1612) just a little too slowly for my way of thinking, because this is French-style dance music which should really set one's foot tapping. Philip Pickett's classic Decca version is certainly more in line with this, as also is the excellent version by the Ricercar Consort and La Fenice on the Belgian specialist label Ricercar.

Where Munrow comes into his own is with his selection of Praetorius's motets. Using multiple choirs, including boy trebles, Munrow illustrates quite fortuitously how German Lutheran church music, despite its virulent Protestantism, was dependent on the example of Giovanni Gabrieli and the music of St. Mark's, Venice. Listen to these tracks in front of your loudspeakers, not via headphones, and you will hear how transparently and spaciously they have been recorded (at London's Abbey Road studios, always a recommendation). The digital remastering has been done excellently, and I could not detect any but the faintest background noise; the instruments stand out clearly, and the voices are captured with wonderful warmth and depth.

      2 out of 5 stars There's a better Terpsichore recording available!.......2001-03-05

If you're buying this CD for the motets, go ahead. But the Dances from Terpsichore are MUCH more fun on the New London Consort recording, directed by Philip Pickett (Decca). They actually make you feel like dancing - imagine that! Plus there are fifteen tracks totaling over 45 minutes on that record, as compared to only 9 tracks totaling 22-1/2 minutes on this one (a selection of Praetorius motets makes up the difference). This version of the dances is muddy, pale, and ponderous by comparison - New London Consort ROCKS!!!

      2 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2001-01-12

Listening to this CD release is not unlike listening to the original vinyl ..IF YOU STICK COTTON WOOL IN YOUR EARS...I vote this as the worst reissue I have heard...yes folks even worse than the Virgin reissues of Van der graaf ..(and that's saying something..) I have given this 2 stars..but only because the music is so good...don't be conned by David Munrows name appearing in bold letters ..I am sure he would have been devastated by the poor treatment handed out to this music and the wonderful musicians playing it....Shame ..Shame..Shame...find the vinyl instead ..It is a warm, well balanced recording of the wonderful music of Praetorius being played by musicians with a passion.
