When he's on, no one was a greater Schubert pianist than Richter. Even Schnable has to bow to the Russian's intensity, insight, and imagination. But not every sonata is a masterpiece, and here Richter plays two that are pleasant without being extremely memorable. Regis has licensed them from a previous release on Olympia; the readings are from a live concert in Tokyo in 1979. That same tour produced some of Richter's most memorable Schubert in terms of drama and impact (see the Regis release containing an incomparable D. 784 and D. 664).

Which isns't to denigrate what he does here--the two early sonatas D. 575 and D. 625 are light, cheerful works, despite the fact that th latter is in a minor key. But I'd start elsewhere, both with Schubert's piano works and with Richter's interpretations of them. This CD made little impression on me beyond its surface pleasures.
