Lacking in depth.......2004-06-09
The liner notes mention how the pedal part was designed by Nicolas Macheret after he had built a replica of a harpsichord by J.H. Harass.
Well, to go to the point, there is absolutely no bass at all in this recording. Very disturbing. I would have expected a harpsichord with a 16' register to fill-up the room with some substance but no... I have an excellent sound system and I always play it with the tone controls out of the circuit. As a test, I put the bass control all the way to the max but it was useless.
Either this harpsichord has a soundboard at least 1/2 inch thick or the sound engineer has done a very bad job recording it. I have many CDs of regular harpsichords with the 8' registers and they all have more bass than this one with a 16'.
The only low frequencies you will hear on this recording are the ones produced by the pedalboard on some pedal-intensive passages and these are justly the ones that shouldn't have been on the recording.
On a positive note, the playing is good although sometimes with un-regular tempo.
All in all, not worth the price.
