5 out of 5 stars epiphanies ,an elan for extroverted dodecaphonic romanticism.......2001-09-25

Martino's exquisite piano music is similar to his other works, like after the sinkage of a dodecaphonist's clipper ship the flotsam/jetsam in the emotive waters ex cathedra has similar shapes, cognitive designs and fillip gesturings.
For my taste his eremitical creativity seems retracted, returning to the safe complaisant womb of extroverted dodecaphonic musical language.Never subverting, distending dramtically the genres he utilizes and caresses.
The 'Preludes' here seem very close,in duplicitous dialogue to Chopin. I thought the postmodernist agenda was to abscond with useable structural shapes yet to subvert them ever so slightly, eruditedly, to create respond to new contexts. Within the realm of these 'preludes' I found their shorter durations efficacious, and exciting in that Martino's musical gesturing inhabits two relams; that of brutal, graphic, dyspeptic overwhelming at times musical moments, to poetic, evocative, infusing his materials with a gentleness, usually a retracted dynamic,a broken harp-like chord,or simply non-dysgenically,expunging the forever present density of his materials.
Likewise the 'Fantasies and Impromptus' another predictable genre, Martino allows himself to discover his voice. The structural design here engages longer durational lengths, enjoining full bodied time continuums, the freer, extroverted, phallic 'Fantasies' with the more one-dimensional,complaisant 'Impromptus' that now are at work, seemingly against each other, reiterating the baroque formula as Bach's "preludes and fugues".
Pianist David Holzman simply plays the hell out of this music, with a depp rooted vision for Martino's extroverticisms, his romantic abandon, and espousal for musical conservative traditions for gesture, not quite a phantasmagoria, for this music is always exceptionaly controlled with focus and direction.
