Du Mont: Motets pour la messe du roy / Ensemble Pierre Robert
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The motets chosen by Frédéric Desenclos for this recording are taken from the composer's last book of motets, published in 1681: Motets à 2, 3 et 4 parties. These pieces cover the whole of Du Mont's career as sous-maître of the royal chapel: some of them were composed shortly before the book was published, while the others date from the 1660s and 1670s. The selection comprises pieces for one to three male voices, with one or two violin parts and basso continuo. Du Mont specifies that some of these motets may be performed by alternative combinations of voices and/or instruments. Some of those alternatives are illustrated here by the Pierre Robert Ensemble. Note the use of the bassoon, following the composer's recommendations. For some of the pieces in the set he specifies the use of the bassoon, ad libitum or obligé. In other cases, he suggests the musicians create a bassoon part from the basso continuo. Frédéric Desenclos has also included three organ pieces by Du Mont, all of them Allemandes, taken from the Cantica sacra (1652), the Meslanges (1657), and the book of Motets à 2 voix (1668). Du Mont left very few pièces d'orgue. These pieces are precious evidence of the many years he spent as an organist.
