Lejeune: Muze, honorons... / Les Pages & Les Chantres / Olivier Schneebeli
Editorial Reviews Le Jeune was not excluded from royal circles, however, and he worked for Charles IX and Henri III. This probably explains the presence in his output of several Latin motets, a Magnificat and a Mass, the result of occasional commissions. Like his contemporaries, he worked from well-known Gregorian melodies in these pieces, demonstrating to the full his skills as a polyphonist of northern France. On the accession of Henry IV, a former Protestant, Le Jeune acceded to the position of Compositeur de la musique de la Chambre du Roy, and he was no doubt the author of a number of pieces for the celebrations accompanying Henry's enthronement. Psalms in French, motets in Latin, sometimes using melodies from the Huguenot Psalter, sometimes borrowing plainchant melodies: the music on this programme is a fine illustration of the religious tolerance that many people aspired to in France at that time. * Musique mesurée à l'antique: late 16th-century French settings of vers mesurés, poetry applying the quantitative principles of classical Greek and Latin to French. The composer followed the metre of the verse exactly; each long (accented) syllable was set to a minim and each short (unaccented) syllable to a crotchet.
Album Description
Musical director Olivier Schneebeli
Claude Le Jeune lived through one of the most troubled periods in French history. Several times, religious conflicts forced him to move and seek new patronage. Adopting the ideas of the Reformation made life singularly difficult for a composer at that time, depriving him of the traditional prospect of being employed by the Church as a maître de chapelle. Le Jeune converted at an early age and, though it very nearly cost him his life, remained loyal to his faith to the end. His commitment is obvious in his works, which include numerous psalms of all sorts, in French and for various vocal combinations. Psalms in counterpoint, harmonised psalms, settings of texts by the Catholic Jean-Antoine de Baïf or the Protestant Agrippa d'Aubigné, illustrating the technique of musique mesurée à l'antique* (of which he was a leading exponent), psalms of outstanding artistry brilliantly celebrating the Edict of Nantes...
