The Mikado recording is the venerable 1950 rendition and it is serviceable, to say the least. Martyn Greene is very funny as Ko-Ko, and even the much-abused Leonard Osborne, as Nanki-Poo, acquits himself well. The real find in this set is the 1949 "Trial By Jury"---superb---light and lots of fun, reminding one of the 1920's electric recordings of G & S, before the operas became National Monuments to be treated with the Utmost Respect. And Richard Watson, as the Learned Judge, is certainly the funniest Judge in the entire recorded canon. He's also excellent as Poo-Bah in The Mikado. All in all, a worthy addition to the G & S roll call.

          As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)

          Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.

          But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

            The Palm Court Theatre Orchestra has captured the essence of the vaudeville stage with this recording. The pictures that waft through my mind during "Down Peacock Alley" are the comic antics that were born during that era. These songs almost cry out to have a silent movie behind them. The male vocals, however, leave a bit to be desired. Although they may sound authentic, with the muffled quality that may have been present during that time, they could have found some singers who sounded a bit less like Florence Foster Jenkins. But bearing in mind the novelty of this CD, the vocals are acceptable, if one doesn't take the genre too seriously. This is music that, if it doesn't bring a smile to your face, will at least help to hone your comic timing much as it did for the silent comedians of yesteryear!
