Digitally Remastered Edition of the Solo Debut from the Other Half of the Sallyangie (The Duo of Sally and Mike Oldfield, Whose Only Album Together Appeared on the Transatlantic Label in the 1970's). Like her Younger Sibling Did on "Tubular Bells", Ms. Oldfield Played Most of the Instruments Heard on this Album, which is Rich with Melodies Based in English Folk Music and Performed on the Most Modern of Instruments as Well as the Traditional. The Subject Matter was Inspired by the World Depicted in J.r.r. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". This Edition Includes the Hit Single "Mirrors", which was Added to the Song Lineup of this Album after the Original LP was Issued. The Music Here Appeals to New Age Aficionados who May Be Familiar with Enya and Other Celtic Based Music.

We had this as an LP years ago and just bought the CD. It was so overwhelming to hear it again, I cannot believe I did not buy this earlier!

It is a magical album that is more than just music, it's capable of transporting your mind to a different realm, for lack of another word. It's an experience for mind, body, and soul.

She does all of the harmonies except for a man in a song or two, and hearing the different layers of her voice blend together is such a treat. The percussion and keyboard are hauntingly beautiful.

Sally Oldfield has been a big success everywhere but in the US, and the only reason I can see is she was overshadowed by her brother, Mike.
This album strikes me as very innocent both in its sounds and ideas. A purity of joy and an almost naive voice, it's a real mood lifter that takes advantage of mystery and nature to create a sound like bells and clear water. Soothing, original, and yes, you can sing along.

This is one of the best albums ever. The operatic tenor DOES belong here. And in my opinion as well as that of other huge fans of Sally, "Mirrors" (the inserted single) does NOT belong here. Make a backup copy with that one deleted and it'll flow even better... In any case, get this CD -- it's an even more astonishing, and more artful, piece of beauty than Vashti Bunyan's debut from 1969.

I think my Mom had this record in the 70's, when I was a kid, as it sounded familiar when I first played it a few months ago. She had told me about it yeeears ago, (I had forgotten all about it, being a kid) since it had some Tolkien-inspired music on it (and I am an old school Tolkien fan). I was happy to see it was on cd, and bought it a few months ago. Wow, I am so happy I bought it!!! The songs are *so* beautiful and atmospheric. I gave it four stars instead of five, *only* because I dont care for the male singer (who I call "Opera Man" :p) who sings a bit on the 'Songs of the Quendi' set (song 2) and the final song. She really doesn't need any help on this album!! And that she played the majority of the instruments herself is absolutely amazing. Its just a gorgeous, relaxing, comforting, inspiring cd and I really recommend it. If you like Celtic music, folk music, new age, 70s non-rock music, Froud, Tolkien, and things that are a bit magical, you'll love this. Goes well with a nice cup of tea after a long day ;)

Haunting Melodies.......2001-10-13

These songs evoke a feeling of another age, of the elvish world and of Tolkien's Middle Earth, with some of the lyrics being borrowed from Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. There are beautiful and haunting songs, a mix of English folk and newer technologies, resembling in part the works of Loreena McKennitt and Enya. Sally's vocals are moving, and the melodies are strong. This is her best work.

ALONG WITH ANNIE HASLAM, ONE OF THE FINEST VOICES EVER HEARD. THIS IS A BENCHMARK WORK BY A TRUE ARTIST, ONE OF THOSE "IF YOU HAD ONE ALBUM TO TAKE TO AN ISLAND". WB & EASY WERE RELEASED 20 YEARS AGO AND STILL HAVE NOT BEEN SURPASSED BY ANYONE. SALLY WROTE, SUNG AND PLAYED NEARLY EVERY INSTRUMENT WHEN PUTTING WATER BEARER TOGETHER - I KNOW OF NO ONE CAPABLE OF THIS FEAT. IT IS REALLY A CONCEPT ALBUM WITH MANY OF THE SONGS LINKED BY SIMILAR THOUGHTS AND IDEAS. a classic in the true sense.......1998-12-15

When I first heard this recording back in the 70's, I felt it was destined to be emulated, if not outright copied by many female artists for years. The sheer scope of the vocals (angelic and bitterweet are two good adjectives) and the use of ancient and modern day mythology make it as unique a project as had come along until then, or since. You can hear the family influence here (Mike is her brother), but the disc in distinctive enough to make it Sally's alone. I defy anyone to listen to "Song of the Healer" or "Land of the Sun" and not be moved.

This is a most excellent choice for any one that likes Loreena. The album came out in 1978 and was played on one jof the local stations. Sally's voice is nothing short of angelic. She does all of the music on the CD, which is very amazing

Syncopating axons.......2005-02-14

This is an especially fun CD! I especially like the fourth movement of the The Nicholls Trio. Based on the firing rhythm of the much studied nervous system of the leech, the music certainly feels like it is creating a sympathetic rhythm in the firing of my own auditory neurons! I give this one a thumbs up for originality and a hew approach to invigorating those parts of the brain activated by music!
