Manhattan-born pianist Rachel Z regards veteran saxophonist Wayne Shorter as a genius, whose music "creates a glimpse into the mystical beauty and nature of life" and offers a "reflection of the life condition of enlightenment and love." Z, the disciple, honors her teacher lovingly and imaginatively on this straight-ahead tribute to Shorter's talents as a composer. Z, whose approach to classical studies at age 15 was transformed when she heard Shorter's music on Miles Smiles, was recruited by Shorter to handle orchestrations for his Grammy-winning 1995 contemporary jazz release, High Life. Here, Z addresses 11 of Shorter's works in a trio setting, joined by bassist Miriam Sullivan (whose credits include work with Wynton Marsalis and Lionel Hampton) and drummer Allison Miller. Recorded on two-track, their approach is refreshingly spare, earnest, and spirited, making lasting lyrical impressions with their winning interpretations of "Black Nile," "Three Marias," and a sagaciously swinging "Witch Hunt." A night-and-day departure from her smooth-jazz disc Love Is the Power, On the Milky Way Express has such intelligent playing that it's simultaneously serene and alert, a lesson in composition taught by Shorter and clearly absorbed by his student. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
purely magic!.......2001-11-13
I saw rachel z trio on 22 dec. 2000 at "AlexanderPlatz" in rome,
and bought the disc from her at the end of the concert.
No way i would have gone home without it!!!
I remember she told me that allison (drums) felt a little sick so she wasn't at her best, and i thought, "Oh my god, can she play even better than this ?".
great drum work by allison (interesting rhythms and very nice work on those cymbals).
pure magic from rachel,
You can easily hear how much she loves Wayne Shorter's music,
and i think i hear clasical influences too.
I'm just waiting for a chance to enjoy once more rachel and her trio in concert, meanwhile i spoile my self with the album.
Truly a work of art.

A Really pleasnt surprise.......2001-03-07
I first saw Rachel Z playing with Wayne Shorter and was impressed, her first album I found dull. So I wasn't expecting much with this album, but it really swings and the gentler setting of the piano trio shows off the beauty of the compositions. I can't wait for her versions of his electric stuff.
Happy, smiling, and Wow!.......2001-03-04
I first heard Rachel Z on KPLU 88.5FM in Seattle and scrammbled to write down the name when I first heard it! Fresh, invigorating, reminded me of some of the Pat Metheny "trio" works, and Pat Metheny Group in general (minus synths, effects). My feelings were of happiness, joy, and the desire to tell others of a wonderful new Jazz trio I had heard. If Jazz makes you happy, makes you want to explore the world, sing, play, and generally be thankful...Wow, this is a CD to get. These women ROCK (JAZZ?)! Gonna find a ticket to their local gig as soon as can. In short, thank you Rachel Z (and your group). Ahimsa.
A Promising Release.......2000-11-23
This trio of young jazz artists has put forward a promising and enjoyable work. For the most part, Rachel's take on the material comes across as fluid and thoughtful. The disc is highly complimented by the competent and expressive drumming of Allison Miller. The performances sound better and better with each listen.
Best tribute album ever.......2000-10-30
I once mistook Rachel Z for (yet another) Smooth Jazz artist and I had to take it back when I heard this CD. She has totally demonstrated her playing skills (already present on the Vertu album) and great mastery in arrangements. For instance, her version of "El Gaucho" is quite a delight. The same applies for "the Three Marias", mixing fluidity and rythm. The trio works well though I would enjoyed more solos from the side girls. Anyway, Wayne Shorter's masterpieces are so numerous that a second volume including "Speak no Evil" or "Juju" could easily be released.

Album Description
Joseph Vitarelli's (THE LAST SEDUCTION, SHE'S SO LOVELY, COMMANDMENTS) lush, orchestral score evokes a contemplative, playful, and sometimes haunting reflection of filmmaker
Nathaniel Kahn's journey to piece together the life of his absent father, renowned architect
Louis I. Kahn.
The MY ARCHITECT soundtrack also features two vocal performances: the devotional
"Call to Prayer" (a striking solo by a Muslim muezzin recorded on location at the mosque in Kahn's monumental National Assembly Building of Bangladesh) and the celebratory Hebrew hymn
"Hayom Tamtzeinu" rendered with fervor by a cantor originally from Kahn's home city of Philadelphia. Included also on the soundtrack is a taped snippet of Louis Kahn himself in the visionary moment captured in a track called 'The Brick.'
The documentary MY ARCHITECT was nominated for an
Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and won the hearts of audiences and critics alike, placing it on a large number of best film of the year lists.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely exquisite..........2005-02-21
An amazing film. I have never witnessed anything so inspiring. Nathaniel Kahn could have crafted a scathing--horrible even--portrayal of his father. Instead, this movie attempts to understand...rather than be understood. Only two things I wanted to know after watching: 1) What does Nathaniel Kahn do for a living? Is he an architect like his father? 2) Does Nathaniel Kahn have a family? Wife? Kids? Not that it matters but it would have been interesting to see, given his fractious almost non-existent relationship with his father, how this affected his own life choices.
A Journey of the Heart.......2004-11-23
You will never hear such a beautiful expression of all the emotions that have taken a lifetime to experience when you listen to The Architect Soundtrack.
The movie was so wonderful. The "forgotten" son searching for the Father who was an architectural genius but lacked all the ability to express his feelings to humans, yet expressed it all in his architecture. An amazing man. His buildings will go on forever and his son has paid him the greatest love by trying to understand his father, through all the pain he caused the people who loved him, by making this film and putting it to the most marvelous music you can imagine. Please buy this albumn and do get the DVD movie. You will not regret it. I only wish I could shake the hand of Nathaniel Kahn and tell him the true joy his film brought to me, and Joseph Vitarelli's music brought tears to my heart. An extraordinary film and soundtrack.

Customer Reviews:
Music I grew up with and loved.......2005-08-05
My parents had this record and played it over and over again, along with Segovia's Bach recordings. They're the reason I took up classical guitar. The album uses non-traditional (for this kind of music anyway) instruments, yet doesn't disrespect the music in any way. To this day one of my favorite arrangements for the Sonata in G minor Larghetto. I've been trying to get a copy of this album on CD as my family considers our vinyl copy an "heirloom". Sadly I can't seem to find any online. I guess I'll just have to keep visiting amazon.com for the audio samples! Sony, have a heart!
Perfect background music for a genteel dinner party,.......1999-06-26
or just for relaxing and organizing your thoughts. The pieces are familiar even to people who think they've never heard Baroque music, and the playing is so impressive and musical that my "I Hate Classical Music" teenage son was blown away!

Disappointing!.......2006-05-12
This CD was released in 1995 and the record company who released it gave me the chance to evaluate it. Laurie Z plays New Age music that will remind you of Yanni. Unfortunately, that's where all the comparisons end. I felt the CD was lethargic and didn't have much punch. It was routine and didn't give me much vibes. There are some moments, though. I enjoyed the track, "My Perfect Love". It displayed her potential with her beautiful acoustic piano playing. But then the rest of her album got too "high tech". I guess you could call it music for the times. It was released more than 10 years ago, so time has not been good to its evolvement. Laurie Z probably has some better CD's out there. Just not this one.
Class act.......2004-07-27
I learned about Laurie Z a number of years ago when she was playing at The South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach California. She is a gracious and classy lady that plays with great skill, passion and creativity.
"Life Between the Lines" is a must have album. With both classical and new age sounds you will love it.
Life Between The Lines - Laurie Z.......2001-03-28
Laurie Z's Life Between The Lines is one of my all time favorite CD's! I have owned that fabulous piece of work for probably 8 years and I can say it is a "timeless" CD. The variation of songs and the compositiion of each and every one is so beautiful. I never get tired of it.
I have played her music in my clothing stores , sitting down to dinner with friends, planting flowers in my garden, driving in my car. It is a must have CD!
Karen Jenanyan Owner/Talisman Boutique Santa Barbara, CA
from Solo Piano Publications.......2000-07-17
I first discovered Laurie Z.'s music on her solo piano album, "Roots", which I love, and then worked my way backwards to her earlier work. All three albums are very different from each other, but all showcase Laurie's passion and love for what she is doing. An innovator at heart, Laurie is also a master at improvisation who always creates new music in concert from audience members's suggestions for subject and key signature. Always on the move, Laurie tours all over the country doing concerts in halls, clubs, music stores, book stores, and outdoor festivals. For many of these festivals, Laurie performs with her band, and the band is included along with Laurie's assorted synthesizers on "Life Between the Lines".
This CD includes some of my all-time favorite Laurie-tunes - the title song with its classical/rock dichotomy, the tragic "From the Diary of a Redhead", "The Mayan Wavelength", "Trouble in Paradise", "The Time Dance", the funky "A Change of Heart", as well as one of Laurie's signature pieces, "My Perfect Love". This is truly one of my favorite albums and one of my favorite artists!
Listening to Laurie Z.: An Extraordinary Musical Journey.......2000-06-23
Have you ever wished you could express your life through music and capture all the big events, everyday moments, and inmost thoughts and feelings in a bounty of sound? Well, wish no more because keyboard genius Laurie Z. has done it for all of us with her extraordinary CD, Life Between the Lines. Listening to its magic is like meeting someone new and feeling as though they've been your best friend all your life. Every track is a gem capturing some aspect of the experiences we all share while trying to live as individuals on a crowded planet. Laurie's uncanny capacity to balance technical virtuosity with exquisite melodies and textures glows from every selection. The title track bristles with the easy grace and power of a summer sun hurling itself through the vastness of early afternoon. Running In Circles dances with all the varied moods of a long and crowded day, busy yet ultimately joyful. The song A Delicate Balance poses those questions that come to a person alone on a rainy night around 2 AM, queries about what our lives mean, how we got to be who and where we are, how we stay there, and why. The closing track, Miss You Blues, evokes the sweet longing of hearts apart even as its infectious, optimistic groove promises that love is stronger than any kind of distance. Each of these 12 tracks is its own sonic universe, at once intimately familiar and delightfully surprising to both ears and spirit. The Mayan Wavelength takes the listener on a mystical electronic jungle journey reminiscent of Laurie's acclaimed debut CD, Window to the World. My Perfect Love, a stunning, achingly beautiful piano solo, gives the listener a good idea of the marvels to be found on Laurie's latest CD, Roots. Considered for eight Grammy nominations, and engineered and co-produced by the legendary Paul Grupp (Get out your favorite music of the last 25 years. You'll probably find that Paul's played a key role in creating it.), Roots is a tour-de-force solo piano feast showcasing Laurie's intuitive gift for hauntingly beautiful melodies and powerful arrangements. Some of the tracks were even spontaneously composed in the studio, a truly prodigious feat given the sweet fire and innate rightness of her sweeping keyboard poetry.
The bottom line is this: Come, listen to the music of Laurie Z. You'll hear your own life between the lines and meet a brand new best old musical friend.

Terrific Tenors.......2007-03-17
Really classic tenor saxs from the mid 1950's, with the same mood and swing of "The Brothers!"
Fun jazz, well played.......2006-03-15
Al Cohn and Zoot Sims team up to provide a tightly woven, well-orchestrated album that will keep your toes tappin' and your face grinnin'
Their collective ability to show a lighter side and sense of humor on this album has made it one of the favorites in my collection, alongside Zoot's collaboration with Clifford Brown.
Swingin' the Jazz Alphabet.......2000-12-16
While not the best collaboration between these two tenor giants of the 1950's, this small group swing session is first rate and features some fine performances by both Sims and Cohn. 16 tracks including alternate takes, this session was recorded in 1956 and includes the rhythm section of Osie Johnson, Milt Hinton, Dave McKenna/Hank Jones (alternating on piano) and not to forget Dick Sherman on trumpet. Good, solid swinging jazz. My only criticism is that the arrangements here are somewhat uninspired (or at least not very clever) when compared to some of Cohn's other sextet outings of the period. Recommended and well worth the price.
