This is a lovingly-presented and very touching recording. Solo piano works by such composers as Kabalevsky, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Schumann, and Ravel come together in this collection intended to promote restfulness and calm in both children and adult listeners. With Carol Rosenberger's gentle playing, it succeeds marvellously. This disc is absolutely ideal for bedtime or times of quiet reflection. It might serve well in the car during traffic jams, too. Rather than just throwing together performances packaged on a theme (as a number of record companies are doing), Delos and Rosenberger seem to have tailored the interpretations to achieve the desired musical goal here. The liner notes have a lively section just for young readers. --Gwendolyn Freed

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Real" classical music for little ones.......2003-02-27

I bought this CD for my elder son when he was tiny; he listened to it nightly (and often for afternoon naps), and his little brother is continuing the tradition. What I like best about this compilation is that this is REAL music - real Brahms, Mozart, etc - and not watered-down versions or arrangements of the classics (like the vast majority of "classical" compilations on the market these days). (I suppose I am just a crank about this, but I grew up listening to real music, and I want my kids to do the same.) The performances are gentle and understated - not what you would want in a concert, but just right for sedating a small one.

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing, yet still super.......1999-06-16

This CD is just wonderful for babies and adults and children. It has a good blend of music to introduce children to beautiful classical music. I think that the playing is just superb.

4 out of 5 stars Just what we harried ADULTS need to unwind!.......1999-02-12

An almost perfect combination of selections for relaxing background music, which is played frequently as our dinner music.

I would have appreciated a little less "electronic doctoring" as some notes (especially the lower range) don't sound quite "true", but then again it could be my ears!

Anyway, am delighted that it does what it was designed to do...provide an enjoyable time of relaxation. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful bedtime music for babies.......1999-01-04

This CD was given to us as a gift when our daughter was born and we always play it when putting her down for a nap or to sleep for the night. When we travel, we take it along to ensure that she will fall asleep as easily on the road as she does at home. The music is absolutely lovely and very soothing for infants and adults alike. We even ordered a second copy in case we were ever to lose or wear out the first one!

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful, beautiful, soothing piano music.......1998-10-22

This is one of the most peaceful, soothing and beautiful CD's I have ever heard. I think it would put you or your baby to sleep every night. The music selection is wonderful and the artist has a beautiful technique on the piano. I loved it.

Haydn was not a pianist of any distinction, nor a very successful composer of instrumental concertos, but his piano sonatas--and there are more than 60 of them--are much finer than those of Mozart, who was one of his era's greatest keyboard virtuosos. The reason for this is simple. Mozart wrote his keyboard concertos for himself and his sonatas for students. Haydn, on the other hand, was constantly stimulated to write piano music for gifted amateurs, though in those days amateurs were often as good as the professionals, particularly women for whom a concert career was out of the question. This is great music then, charming but never trivial, and John McCabe plays it with impressive style and vigor. --David Hurwitz

3 out of 5 stars Nice Set...not a great performance.......2005-05-08

As a pianist myself, I was very interested to listen to Mr. McCabe when preparing my M.M. degree recital, in which I performed Haydn's Sonata in E minor, Hob:XVI/34 (I will refer to the sonata by the Landon number rather than the older Hoboken number).

Mr. McCabe certainly plays quite cleanly, as one would expect in this day and age. In addition, he provides extensive program notes (Mr. McCabe is a respected musicologist)

Unfortunately, Mr. McCabe isn't quite the performer one would expect to produce the entire output of Haydn's Sonatas. First of all, his tempos are usually not well suited to the music's style (whether in the Allegros or Adagios). Though this has somewhat to due with his lesser technical ability, it also has to do with his idea of interpretation, which to say the least, is quite boring. In the Sonata No. 34, the opening movement has a very particular character. Though it is one of Haydn's few sonatas in a minor key, the opening motive returns in many forms throughout the first movement. Mr. McCabe seems to miss the point of this, along with the importance of articulation (which is of utmost importance in the music of Haydn).

Mr. McCabe uses far too much pedal throughout (especially in the first movement). In the second movement, his imprecise pedaling detracts from the recitative quality (this movement being influenced from Haydn's knowledge of vocal writing and operatic traditions). The third movement is quite slow and the lively character is missing.

I don't believe that one can put Mr. McCabe's recordings on a level with great Haydn interpreters such as Ax or even Richter (with far more color and more adherence to the musical style). This is unfortunate as it comes from such a respected musicologist.

As a final note, it is nice to own this collection to have all Haydn's Sonatas and his output for piano at your fingertips, but I would recommend Ax (or Andsnes in the future...his Haydn Concertos are fantastic).

4 out of 5 stars Much unknown music to assimilate.......2005-04-19

I can partially share one reviewer's opinion that much of this music seems repetitive and certainly that is somewhat the case, but I only listen to one disc at a sitting. It takes time to get to know these sonatas. The Mozart sonatas are more widely performed, and therefore known to the music listening public. At this point in my experience, I must admit that I prefer the Mozart sonatas, but I am gaining an appreciation for those of Haydn.

The quality of the recording is good with very little background noise or noticeable distortion. The piano seem OK for the type of music and if one reviewer thinks these are twangy, listen to these sonatas on an eighteenth century pianoforte.

Mr. McCabe is a competent player without any idiosyncracies which seems in keeping with these sonatas.

I received a boxed set that had two disc sixes and no disc three. Ah, German precision.

1 out of 5 stars the greatest penny a note composer.......2005-04-02

I have listened to all 62 sonatas for keyboard and perhaps 3 of them rise to the level of wonderful composition. If you listen to them you hear he doesn't really "get started " until about sonata 32, compared with say Beethoven who except for 3 or 4 composed 32 of the greatest piano sonatas the world will ever hear. I have attempted to give Haydn a fair hearing for symphonic ( boring ) and keyboard works but for the most part he must get the award for not really being able to put 2 consecutive asthetic notes together. The Nelson Mass is very nice. And I know in his last years, Europe just adored him. He was earning upward in todays dollars of $85,000, which just galled Mozart. Finally the sonatas are performed and recorded well. Before purchasing these sonatas listen to the clips and see if you dont want to run screaming into the night, but if you are a boring person with absolutely no musical asthetic, these sonatas cant be beat!

5 out of 5 stars The best complete set of Haydn Sonatas at any price.......2004-05-22

Other individual performances may "grab" you more than these, but as a whole I could not find fault with these performances. They are particularly satisfying if you follow with a score - you get to see the choices in ornamentation, dynamics, etc. that McCabe makes compared with what is on the printed page. I did several comparisons with other performers (I own 4 complete sets of these sonatas and several smaller compilations), and McCabe consistently comes out on top overall, in my opinion. Haydn's best sonatas are consistently more inventive, witty, and daring than Mozart's and are definitely worth your attention.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performances of rarely heard works.......2004-05-16

Rich & delicious entertainment. Delighted that one can enjoy this beautiful music of pieces which are rarely publicly performed.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable pianist!.......2007-04-07

Although the brumes of the elapsed years, Rudolf Buchbinder in the middle seventies established a well deserved place among the pianist of his generation when personally decided to assume a great challenge like play Haydn in a moment in which precisely the entire world was celebrating the bicentenary of Beethoven's birth.

That was a bold decision, but the way he approached to the Hungarian master was filled of healthy vitality and mesmerizing freshness.

He has been gifted of a powerful sound, and so his Haydn never sounded kindly of I may. But with certain Beethovenian reminiscences.

I still remember the praised comments around the world with his successful versions recorded on Telefunken label.

If you are really looking for an innovative Haydn' s sound, go for this set. It will reward you from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Jeno Jando Plays Early Haydn Sonatas.......2007-06-23

This CD is a delightful recording of the earliest keyboard sonatas attributed to Haydn. The sonatas are "attributed" to Haydn because scholars have questions about the authenticity of at least some of them. In addition, the sonatas cannot be precisely dated. They are generally thought to be composed with 1766 as an outside limit. More likely, these works were composed in the late 1750s and early 1760s.

These types of questions should not deter you from enjoying these works. They are light, flowing, graceful, and accessible. The sonatas were composed at the beginning of the classical period and exemplify the galant style that developed as a reaction to the difficulties of the contrapuntal music of the baroque era. The sonatas were originally composed for the harpsichord, but they work well on the piano as this CD shows. Jeno Jando beautifully plays these early works as part of his recording of the complete Haydn piano sonatas on Naxos. Jando has recorded prolifically for Naxos over the years. He is at his best in Haydn.

The CD includes ten sonatas, all of which are in the major key. Each work is short, ranging from under five minutes for each of the first two sonatas to about nine minutes for the sixth sonata. Sonata no. 9 consists of two movements while the first sonata consists of four very brief movements. The remaining eight sonatas are in three movements.

The works include some interesting variations in structure. The four-movement sonata no. 1 is in the pattern allegro-minuet-andante-allegro. The sonatas typically open with a fast movement, but two works, no. 6 and 9 begin moderato. One of favorites of these works, no. 7 in D major, opens with a theme and variations. The second movement of most of the works is generally a minuet which ususally, but not always, includes a trio section. In sonatas 5 and 10, a slow movement appears rather than the minuet. The finale is almost always quick and lively. But here again there are exceptions. Sonatas 5, 9, and 10 end with a minuet while sonata no. 3 ends with a scherzo. Furthermore, Haydn cannabalized among these sonata, as he would do throughout his career. The final movement of sonata no. 4 becomes the opening presto of the next work, sonata no. 5.

The circumstances for which these works were composed also is obscure. Some of the sonatas were probably written for drawing-room performance. But several of them likely were composed as teaching pieces, either for Haydn's early young pupils or for family members or courtiers at the Morin or Esterhazy courts. Whatever the case, this is music to be enjoyed rather than to be over-intellectualized.

This CD is lovely to hear and makes an excellent introduction to the early classical style for keyboard. It offers an excellent lead-in to Haydn's mature piano sonatas or to his earliest symphonies that probably date from the time of these sonatas.

5 out of 5 stars Delicate and satisfying.......2006-06-13

Jando gives these sonatas a light yet pleasing touch. They certainly glide along and seem to rythmically resonate in some way - they just seem 'right'. Having heard these versions I can't imagine anyone else playing them.

Having heard several of the other volumes of Jando/Haydn, I can say that this is my favourite so far - and at least one co-worker rushed out and bought the CD after I bought it to work.

I highly recommend this disc to Haydn fans and those who would enjoy an hour of sublimely played, elegant piano sonatas.

5 out of 5 stars Charming.......2005-11-20

These attractive sonatas receive beautiful performances from Jando. The previous reviewer had a quibble regarding tracks 13 and 14 being the same; but, in fact, Haydn made the finale to Sonata # 4 the opening movement of # 5.

5 out of 5 stars Piano Sonatas of the Highest Caliber!.......2005-06-17

I find Jeno Janos' series of Haydn's Piano sonatas very entertaining. In fact, there is only a small handful of pianist's that have recorded these earliest sonatas and IMHO I couldn't imagine better performances! They are all short and sweet. If you enjoy early Mozart, you will certainly love these works! My only quibble is that tracks 13 and 14 are exactly the same. Maybe the engineers at Naxos should pay more attention!

5 out of 5 stars From the review in Gramophone.......2006-12-14

"These recordings are to be counted among the best Alfred Brendel has given us. Listening to all four on CD has been a treat. The presentation of the collection is good too, and Monika Mollering's essay ('Images of Haydn') and notes on the individual sonatas and pieces are a stimulus to enhanced enjoyment of the remarkable qualities of the music. It takes a great player to do justice to its variety, its richness of expression, its wit and its sophistication of form and structure, as Mollering says. Brendel's steady illumination of Haydn is a delight. He is at once a scrupulous and a robust interpreter, setting out from a careful reading of the text to seek the most vivid projection of Haydn's ideas---and I admire especially the way he allows boldness, even daring, to play a part in the search. The playing is alive with a feeling of spontaneity and the capricious side of Haydn is served as generously as the rest of him. 'The perceptiveness and musicality of his playing may well be a revelation even to those who know that Haydn's keyboard sonatas, still shamefully neglected, are every bit as good as Mozart's', was a comment of RG's about the third disc. On the second, RF thought Brendel revealed the E minor as 'one of Haydn's very greatest sonatas'. And about the last sonata, the E flat, on the most recent issue, I said I could imagine Beethoven relishing this performance of it. In sum, marvellous music, its marvels made brilliantly manifest."

This disc, Volume 3 of the series, contains five sonatas and the work usually known as Andante and Variations in F Minor, here with the early title Un piccolo divertimento. Whatever you call it, it's a highly unusual piece, variations on two themes each so long that they are varied only twice. It's also one of Haydn's most deeply emotional piano works, and contrasts nicely with the quirky two-movement sonatas that make up most of the disc. As before, Jenö Jandó's performances treat each work as an individual and characterize each one convincingly. Regardless of price, these are among the best Haydn piano discs in the catalog. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Delightful !!!.......2006-01-14

This disc, Volume 3 of Jeno Jando's series of Haydn Piano Sonatas, by turns is whimsical, deeply moving, delightful, profound. It is pure Haydn: the sudden silences, the humor, the humanity and warmth of the music, the contrasts in mood, the sprightliness - the joyousness - of the music. In my honest opinion, Haydn's piano sonatas surpass those of Mozart. The opposite, I think, is true of their piano concerti, but as overall instrumental pieces, Haydn reigns, however lovely and soaring the melodies in Mozart piano sonatas.

Jeno Jando's playing is superb; he seems to be at his best in Haydn. I particularly love the quicksilver changes in mood, say from the humor and whimsy of Sonata no.58 to the deeply touching and slower Variations in F Minor that concludes the disc. This CD is a joint triumph: Haydn's wonderful music; Jando's effervescent, sparkling, sensitive playing; and Naxos' bringing them together in fine, digital sound. A CD I'll return to often.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Another Haydn Winner From Naxos........2000-10-01

You can't go wrong with any Naxos CD of Haydn's music. Virtually every CD on the market so far is a winner. This CD offers 70 minutes of good value. The Bb Sonata is particularly engaging. It receives a sprightly performance from the Jeno Jando. As with other of his recordings, I sometimes am aware of soft grunts and crooning noises, an accompaniment to his piano playing not evident when I heard him in recital in Melbourne.

4 out of 5 stars a nice introduction to the haydn piano works.......2002-11-01

franz jospeh haydn was not a pianist, composing his works for the piano for the virtuosi around him, including many works for private buyers--remember in his day, women were not allowed to pursue professional music careers, so haydn had quite an "amateur" public to write for! the piano concertos are not the star here, even though they are wonderfully performed by mikhail pletnev and the deutsche kammerphilharmonie. the real reason to purchase this inexpensive twofer is the sampling haydn's piano sonatas. haydn wrote over 60 sonatas, and mr. pletnev has chosen three of the later ones for performance here. haydn's gift for exciting, yet moving composition is readily apparent here. this is music that holds your attention and leaves you hungry for more. truly exceptional!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fournier.......2004-02-16

On this 4CD EMI Import, the great cellist Pierre Fournier performs a variety of orchestral and chamber recordings, recorded primarily in mono from the 1940s and early 50s. There are three orchestral works -- Haydn's 2nd Concerto (Kubelik/Philharmonia, 1951), Schumann's Concerto (Sargent/Philharmonia, 1956 in stereo), and Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations (Bigot/Lamoureux, 1941). Disc two, and half of disc three, contain Beethoven Cello Sonatas with the great Artur Schnabel, while the fourth disc features a variety of pieces, from Bach and Boccherini to Debussy and Ravel, with pianist Gerald Moore. I'm withholding a fifth star because the collection contains mostly historical recordings, though it certainly captures one of history's greatest cellists in his prime. With that being said, "Les Introuvables de Pierre Fournier" is a must buy for cello entusiasts.
