4 out of 5 stars What a Delight!.......2005-03-01

What a delight for the long-time Horace Silver fan! From out of the blue this wonderful album appears, a brand-new release up to the quality levels of his peak mid-70s output. And Horace says he has many additional hours of unreleased material!

This album was composed in the early 90s in his latter-day extended-ensemble style (not the early "funky" Horace or the stripped-down Latin style from the 60s). That means rich harmonies and some very nice transitions. Andy Bey and other singers are present and do a fine job (which is nice to report). Highlight are Satchmo's Song, a luscious waltz, and Lavender Love.

I saw Horace perform this material last year at the Blue Note in NYC. Horace was a little tentative in his solos and little creaky in his gait, but he seemed to be enjoying himself. And he packed the club with happy fans. AND I managed to get a photo of him and Andy (who calls Horace "Horatio") upstairs in the dressing room after the show.

Do yourself a favor and pick up this release. You can thank me later.
