Éclairs sur l'au-dela (Illuminations of the Beyond) was Messiaen's last work. It shares with his other large-scale orchestral pieces a sense of otherworldly grandeur, obsessively repeated rhythmic and melodic patterns, birdcalls, and a riot of orchestral color, among much else. Its eleven movements address different aspects of the title and, like virtually everything Messiaen wrote, could not be mistaken for any other composer. Rattle and the Berlin Orchestra deliver a skilled, dynamic rendition, steering clear of the kitschy implications of sections where Messiaen skirts the edges of kitsch (enjoyable as they may be). Unexpectedly, the Berliners sound at home in this music, with some terrific solo and section contributions, and special kudos due to the percussionists and winds, especially the flutes, whose birdcalls resound throughout the work. Transparent engineering uncovers details in the score, further making this a delight for Messiaen fans. --Dan Davis

Some of Messiaen's most glorious and clever music, but bogged down by excessive length.......2007-02-18
"Eclairs sur l'au dela" for orchestra is Messiaen's last work, with the exception of a minor concerto for four musicians that had to be completed by George Benjamin. Messiaen wrote these "illuminations of the here-after" between 1987 and 1991, and the work was premiered in late '92, six months after the composers death. For a long time only one recording was easily accessible, by the Bastille Opera Orchestra and Myung-Whun Chung on Deutsche Grammophon. But here on this 2004 EMI disc, Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker give a strong performance of the work.
The work really does have all the features Messiaen is known for among its eleven movements. A long, bright brass chorale opens the work, an "Apparition of the Glorious Christ". Birdsong fills the second and third movements, while the fifth, "Abiding in love" is a long, slow adoration. The seventh movement, "The Seven Angels with the Seven Trumpets" is the most striking of the work. While Messiaen's treatment of this theme in his celebrated "Quartet for the End of Time" was a joyful dance, here it's a grim and threatening cadence marked by the occasional beating of a timpani in the wings.
Certain parts of "Eclairs" are among Messiaen's best writing. However, as a whole it suffers from a problem common to much of the composer's work: it's overlong. Most of the first half of the work is perfectly timed, even the five-minute brass chorale that opens "Eclairs" and the ten-minute "Abiding in Love" work in spite of their limited musical material. However, everything from the seventh movement seems dull and often directionless. At these moments, even the most dedicated fan of Messiaen finds his attention wandering. One's listening to the work is likely to be through skipping from track to track for the good stuff, ignoring a fairly large portion entirely.
This particular performance by the Berliner Philharmoniker and Simon Rattle is the best around. In terms of sound quality it easily beats the DG recording, and Rattle (as any who have seen him conduct the piece know) is extremely passionate about "Eclairs" and gives it his all as no other conductor. The liner notes are only average, fans of the composer should pick up Peter Hill and Nigel Simeone's MESSIAEN: A Life in Words and Pictures (Yale University Press, 2005) which the notes make reference to.
If you are a total Messiaen newbie, I'd recommend starting with the TASHI Ensemble's performance of "Quatuor pour la fin du Temps", one of the most extraordinary CDs in my collection. But "Eclairs" has much brillance, in spite of its tendency to go on and on, and should be one of the first discs you purchase once you know you like this great French composer.
MYSTIC, WONDERFUL.......2004-12-27
Music lovers who have so much as a nodding acquaintance with the work of Messiaen will have a very fair idea of what to expect from these Eclairs (flashes of illumination), written right at the end of his long life. Messiaen was in the Catholic tradition of mysticism, and he found the manifestation of the godhead on earth largely in the contemplation of birdlife and birdsong. He was also a virtuoso of the orchestra much as Tennyson was a virtuoso of the English language, and when I listen to this marvellous work I keep thinking tangentially of the arm that rose from the lake to reclaim Excalibur `clad in white samite, mystic, wonderful'. It's unfair to Messiaen in a minor way, because Messiaen's mysticism and religious faith were genuine and deep-seated; but the spectacular technical skill of his orchestral writing is every bit as important to the hearer, and these Illuminations of the Far Side are nearly as systematic a demonstration of the orchestra as Britten's Young Person's Guide to same.
You will get a few insights into the work from the accompanying liner note by Roger Nichols, but I have to report that his illuminations are fewer and less illuminating than they ought to have been. It's more than slightly lazy-minded, which might not have bothered me if this had been some familiar classic but which is downright objectionable in relation to a work that is crying out for informed comment. Here we have 11 pieces bearing religious titles. These titles give us the key (presumably) to the composer's inspiration in each case. Mr Nichols takes more than half the brief space available to him in a leisurely discussion of the composer's fascination with prime numbers and the fact that this is one of three works by him that have an American association. These issues are neither here nor there, and as space has run out we have to make do, when it comes to the seventh piece, with the revelation that it makes much of the chord of D major. How different it would have been, one assumes, if it had made much of the chord of E flat major or C sharp major. And it is simply rubbish to say `Finally, though, Paradise is attained'. The theme of this work is not the Divine Comedy or Faust, and the music is not Mahler's 8th. The final number here is just another part of the composer's overall mental concept, and it is something that the right sort of atheists are likely to understand and respond to better than the wrong kind of people of faith.
Happily, the performance and recording are simply superlative. Is Rattle the greatest conductor alive in 2004? I suspect so. The Berlin Phil seem to be back to their Karajan-era infallibility, but now under musical direction that I for one rate far above Karajan. I recommend this disc both to experienced enthusiasts for Messiaen and to interested newcomers. This music is neither traditional on the one hand nor forbidding on the other. It is a glorious display of sumptuous sound, and it is inclusive - it doesn't speak only or even mainly to those who share the composer's own vision. The recording sounds as if there was nothing to it, an effortless and unmanipulated reproduction of superlative playing in a huge score. Les Elus marques du sceau, all of them.
Warmth, color and depth and autumnal intensity.......2004-10-13
There is no doubt in my mind that this one will be the new "definitive" recording for Eclairs sur l'au dela. I own the Chung - Orchestre de l'Opera Bastille recording on DG, and by all means, that one is not bad. But, no matter how much sympathy I have for Chung's efforts, there is a clear and inescapable difference when you hear the Berlin Phil versus the a French Opera Orchester. Especially in "Demeurer dans L'amour" and "Le Christ, Lumiere du Paradis", the unparalled string section of the Berlin Philharmonic offers much more urgency, authority and sonority, much more cushioning and velvet, much more warmth, color and depth, and a real autumnal intensity (Sir Simon is said to have declared that this work is Messiaen's Missa Solemnis), and thereby transcends this recording into a very different league of its own.
Sometimes I feel though that the EMI engineering could be more spacious, but maybe this is just me...

"Illuminations of the Beyond" (it's better in English--in French it sounds too much like a pastry) was Olivier Messiaen's last completed work; it's a masterpiece to rank with his other multimovement orchestral extravaganzas: Turangalila Symphony, From the Canyons to the Stars, and The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The music is dazzling in its variety, from the composer's famous birdsong concoctions, to music of truly transcendental beauty. If you enjoy any of his other works, you'll want to hear this, and if you don't know his music, this is also a good place to start. The performance is excellent, and so is the sound. --David Hurwitz

It Doesn't Get any Better.......2006-02-24
This is simply one of the greatest recordings ever made. It was dedicated to the composer and can't be topped for sound quality, dynamics, passion, subtlety, delicacy, worship. The conductor, engineers and orchestra are as perfectly tuned to the spirit and genius of Messiaen as it's possible to be. This music can only be shared by someone who knows and loves the soul of music.
People need to hear this.......2003-04-26
ok - well this is good - This piece was the first Messiaen I heard. I heard it on radio about three times - first hearing, I thought it was very odd and really quite rubbish - the next couple of hearings I was still cynical, but I had never heard anything quite like it before, and it kind of drew me - I started to find the the 5th and 6th movements mesmerizing, as well as the final movement. I eventually ended up buying it on CD - and it is an impressive piece.
I have now listened to some other Messiaen pieces, including Turangalila, the Quartet for the end of Time, Et Exspecto, Des Canyons aux etoiles and Livre du Saint Sacrement which are v good, and I don't know whether or not I would say this is the best, but it has more of a serenely majestic feel to it. The fifth movement is the most ecstatic music I have ever heard, the first movement is a fantastic piece - totally static - it seems to make the piece move outside of time at the very outset. Much of the work consists of a sort of spiritual ecstasy mixed with genuine awe, with scattered birdsong - which acts like a sort of 'small' quality showing that God, whilst majestic and awesome, and awesomely loving, is also beautiful and approachable.
This is music that many people 'won't get' which is a pity, as I think it presents something almost wholly unique in our western society let alone music - we have a busy society which always has to be places, and never feels it can be timeless. This is music that reaches into another world - as indicated in its title - which is far away from our western lives of appointments, meetings and merely forming interest cultures.
The last thing I want to see is this sort of music representing some kind of pretentious modern music culture - it is important stuff - and needs to be heard by a wide range of people. - Not everyone will like it on first hearing- perhaps very few will - but people should work at understanding what is going on and not be scared - after all its difficult to get on with any really good music - even more 'normal' stuff unless you've lived with it a bit. I get quite irritated by people running away from this stuff scared, and I also get irritated by people moaning about the precise quality of some bit of the performance or conductor's pace or something like its important.
End of diatribe - just go listen - and if it seems odd - listen again - and again - perhaps listen to other similar stuff - and don't do it just because you want to show off how educated you are - but give in time and you'll appreciate it. In the future, I think Messiaen may well come to be seen as as important as characters like Mozart or Beethoven or Wagner or Mahler - but this has a different feel - and this is its timelessness.
This Bible needs a new translation........2001-07-01
This recording, and therefore the piece itself, whizzed right over my head when I took it out of the library six months ago. It didn't help that the librarian sneered "It's hard to take this Messy-en seriously." Since I love, with qualifications, earlier Messiaen works like Quatuor Pour le Fin du Temps, the Turangalila-Symphonie, and especially Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jesus -- the religious piano cycle that perfectly captures the sense of "holy dread," in Rautavaara's phrase, prevailing in the manger the night Christ was born, as if everyone present knew how many crucifixions, holy wars, and mind-numbing theological quibbles and Sunday school lessons were to follow -- I just chalked up Messiaen's "failure" with the Donut Symphony to senile self-parody.
Then, a couple nights ago, I heard it played by the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle, not who you would think of as a born Messiaen conductor. It was revelatory. Shamelessly or not, he played up the symphony's structural resemblance to Mahler, especially the 3rd and its notorious attempt to encompass the world -- in his hands the centerpiece of Illuminations, "Demeurer Dans L'Amour," which sounds like a beam of sunlight refracted under water in a serene yet creepy ocean, made me think of the subtitle "What the Sea Anemones Taught Me As They Brushed Against My Legs While I Was Swimming and Really Weirded Me Out." Except that Messiaen's grab-bag is even more ambitious, attempting, like the movie 2001, transcendence as well -- the French word "demeurer," which means to melt into something, expresses the vibe more accurately, but has unfortunate 80's soft-rock connotations ( Modern English, specifically ) in our Anglo world.
Anyway, whenever Messiaen goes completely static, that's when you know you're supposed to be seeing god. Listening to the aural Ny-Quil on this Chung disc, I much preferred to see my bed. This performance has all the structure of a deboned chicken. While I hate being one of those guys who whets your appetite for some obscure, lost performance you'll never hear, and there's no guarantee that Rattle was recorded -- although the audience reaction at the end made it quite clear they knew they had heard something special -- I'm at least obliged to tell you that this music can be less effete, more taut and muscular. More VERTICAL, in short, like Jacob's ladder, crucial for all you suppliants in the pit with eyes upraised to the heavens. So my final advice: wait for another recording, any recording. In the meantime, if you're thirsting for some lesser-known 20th century classical, try something by Per Norgard, Edmund Rubbra, Malcolm Arnold, Vagn Holmboe, Peter Eotvos...
Mediocre Messiaen.......2000-05-27
I thought this CD would be worth a listen to after experiencing the Turangalila Symphony. However, compared to the great Messiaen works, such as the Turangalila or the Quartet for the End of Time, this work is quite mediocre, and not worth the price of the CD.
In form the music alternates between serene moments and Messiaen's famous birdcall music. However, the more serene moments do not have the timeless quality that you can find in Mahler, Tavener, Part, etc. Unless you must listen to all of Messiaen's works, skip this one.
I'm confused!.......2000-03-24
I love the six Messiaen titles in my collection and so upon the recommendation of the Amazon Critics went out and bought this one. I must say, I found it incredibly boring and tedious. If you are new to Mr. O.M. start elsewhere! I still give it 5 stars because what the hell do I know? This is strictly a matter of personal taste. I do know that if I started off my O.M. collection with this one I would have been turned off big time. That would be a pity as O.M. is marvelous.

Discover a divine composer for just pennies.......2006-12-05
Anyone who takes a walk down the classical aisles at any record store will notice the sheer amount of compilations produced in this genre. From opera arias to ambient mixes to the greatest hits of a particular era, there's hundreds of them. But compilations of modern composers are rare, and Deutsche Grammophon deserves praise for this disc offering samples of the ecstatic music of Olivier Messiaen. The music of this devout Roman Catholic who saw colours when he heard notes and thought birdsong was the voice of God is full of majesty and glittery effects like no other.
The selections cover the two ends of Messiaen's career. Four selections are early. "The Ascension" for orchestra is from 1932, one of the his first major pieces he ever wrote. From the "Quartet for the End of Time", the masterpiece he wrote while held by the Germans in a prisoner of war camp, we have the passionate "In Praise of the Eternity of Jesus" movement. And from the "Turangalila Symphony" of 1948, the massive composition highlighting Messiaen's interest in exotic rhythms and praising romantic love, we get the two most exhuberant movements. The compilation skips over the 50s, 60s, and 70s. From the late end of Messiaen's career we get the "Abide in Love" movement from his last full work "Illuminations of the Here-After", and the "Vocalise" movement from his "Concerto for four soloists", completed by his wife Yvonne Loriod after his death.
The orchestral works here are performed by the Orchestre de l'Opera conducted by Myung-Whun Chung. I've never been too passionate about these, preferring the Rattle recording of the "Illuminations" and the Nagano of the "Turangalila Symphony". Ditto for the "Quartet for the End of Time", here in the old Barenboim recording, for which I prefer the TASHI ensemble's performance. Still, while the material here seems second-best to this review who has built up a whole Messiaen collection, none of the performances here are poor. You'll be entertained from all. There's also an informative booklet with enlightening details on the pieces.
If you're curious about Messiaen's music, this compilation, used copies of which go for pennies, is a great way to encounter the work of this highly individual and supremely listenable composer.
DON'T JUDGE THIS CD BY ITS COVER.......2000-11-30
As averse as I am most of the time to compilations, and with good reason (e.g. Mozart's Greatest Hits, Vol. 25), this CD is a find and, if not exactly altering my opinion, does serve up a little crow for me to munch.
At first I didn't know what to make of it; I'd seen it bouncing around the library bins for weeks, its purple "presence," with the DG logo hidden discreetly at the bottom left corner, throwing me completely offguard.
"MYSTIC." That's all the cover says. I thought--- not thinking at all, actually--- "Mystic," what? Mystic Moods (for a Rainy Night)? The Mystic Moods Orchestra?
So out of obstinate curiosity, and looking for something new to hear, I pulled the "plum" from the bin... and opened it.
Egad! Messiaen! Who would have suspected? (Purple for passion, I guess.) Regardless of this rather ludicrous marketing gambit, what we have here is an otherwise intelligently-packaged collection of superb music by Messiaen (1908-1992), crowned by the glorious "L'Ascension" (Four Symphonic Meditations for Orchestra) and sprinkled by excerpted "gems" like the "Vocalise," "Garden of Love's Sleep" and "To Remain In Love." Even a die-hard, anti-compilationist (like me) cannot fail but to be moved by these--- dare I speak the word!--- MYSTICAL, serene, beautiful and devotional pieces that form the very core of the composer.
In the very kindest sense of the analogy, this CD is the musical equivalent of CLIFF NOTES (except we're not drudging through WUTHERING HEIGHTS, here). And my feeling is: For those not familiar with Messiaen, any appreciable method to enlightenment is fine, any approach valid.
This CD offers the gentlest of entrees into the sound world of Messiaen, and for this, alone, it must be enthusiastically recommended.
[Running time: 75:18]
Insightful collection of sublime music.......2000-07-17
While Messiaen's music is finding increasing interest in recording and performance, it is still sometimes difficult "break the shell" to get to the heart of it. This disk not only serves the purpose of approaching his music, but itself provides a glimpse of the broad musical landscape, extraordinary tone color and inspiration in his writing. And the performance and production are first rate. A beautiful collection of music by one of the great composers of the last century.
Sounds like Debussy.......1999-09-28
Messiaen sounds like Debussy to me. I enjoyed this album very much and it seems to be a good introduction to his work. If you like meditative classical music, give this one a try.

I love the music of Messiaen and I heard a performance of this piece in Westminster Cathedral in London. This CD does not disappoint after that memorable experience. It is sharp, clear, emphatic and full of life. It usually involves me no matter what my mood and takes me with it. But for the exhilaration of actually listening I might think the recording, or performance, I cannot tell which, were clinical, so clear and intentional is the timing and dynamics. Not knowing more about music I can say no more than this recording stands up to all the many Messiaen recordings and performances I have heard. My copy of the CD was stolen form my car and I am online to replace it. I find that I cannot countenance a different recording, though both the alternatives are well reviewed. I recommend it on the basis that if I want it back it must be good.
