Customer Reviews:
Earning five stars because of its profound contribution to popular music.......2007-06-05
This is probably the best intro CD to Glenn Miller. It is missing some great songs including "Sunrise Serenade" and "Anvil Chorus", which are two of my favourites. For individuals concerned with the sound quality; there are some very unnatural anomalies created due to trying to eliminate the clicks and pops. The anomalies are often very non-musical and distracting. There is a OOP 3 CD set titled "The Popular Recordings (1938-1942)" that I keep going back to as the most natural sounding recordings I have of Glenn. If timbre and tonality matter to you, the 3 CD set may suit your tastes better; but this CD set has more prominent clicks and pops (because they are there and they cannot go away cleanly regardless of modern technology). Also to note, the material covered by the 3 CD set really has a far greater breadth of material.
Remarkable sound, beware other albums of the same title.......2007-02-19
First, don't confuse this 2005 release with the unrelated and vastly inferior 2006 release of the same title. This 2005 album offers more numbers and the best sound I've heard yet on a GM remastered compliation.
I've been buying GM albums since the late 1960s, starting with a vinyl LP compilation that "enhanced" each track with synthesized "stereo" (awful), so I've experienced the steady improvements in sound quality as remastering technology has become more sophisticated. The quality of the sound on this album is a revelation. Except for being in mono, the tracks sound much more recent than 1939-1944. And although the original recordings were made under all kinds of conditions with varying quality of equipment, the remastering produces a consistent sound quality across all tracks. I would dare say that these recordings probably sound even better than fresh-out-of-the-package 78s did back in Miller's heyday, except perhaps on the very best phonographs.
Few people still living today heard GM in person, and the number is rapidly dwindling. RCA's willingness to put this kind of investment into remastering a collection of his music shows that new audiences continue to discover and appreciate that distinctive GM sound.
Boy,the way Glenn Miller played, his songs that made the hit parade!.......2006-03-16
Boy,the way Glenn Miller played, his songs that made the hit parade. Guys like him, they had it made, those were the days! Miller was one of the world's greatest swing music artists in the late 1930's and early 1940's. He had a string of hits such as MOONLIGHT SERENADE,IN THE MOOD,MOONLIGHT SONATA,JUKEBOX SATURDAY NIGHT and THE NEARNESS OF YOU. Miller's career ended early with his untimely death unfortunately. It's amazing to have heard the late Carroll O'Connor mention Miller in the opening line of THOSE WERE THE DAYS,the opening montage theme from the CBS Emmy-winning sitcom All In The Family. Fans of Miller also loved the late Benny Goodman, the late Tommy Dorsey and the late Harry James.
Not essential.......2005-11-24
I own a number Glenn Miller sets like The Complete Recordings (13 CD`s), The Popular Recordings (3 CD's), Essential Glenn Miller (1995), etc.
So, I always enjoy looking over the latest compilation of the great Glenn Miller Orchestra (1938/1942) which seem to be released every few months from somewhere in the world. There is always a number of big hits that are always included (In The Mood, Little Brown Jug, A String of Pearls, Kalamazoo, etc.) and there's always a few songs that are kind of new to the "best of" circuit. Which brings me to the latest, most up-to-date compilation...The Essential Glenn Miller, not to be confused with Essential Glenn Miller from `95.
The sound quality is excellent and perhaps a hair better than the old "Essential" Glenn Miller released in 1995. I can think of a number of great Miller songs that could have made this collection even better. When looking over the running order, I couldn't believe there was NO "Perfidia", NO "Sunrise Serenade". These two songs are on EVERY great Miller collection over the years. I hate to think that new fans might miss out on these great tunes. The 1943/44 material was a nice touch. Giving a better balance to the Miller catalog. Bottom line: Look for the 4 disc Proper Box Set.
Finally, why can't these compilations of old 78's have a few more seconds between them? Essentially we have a bunch of singles all crammed together, so why not let them have some breathing room. As I recall, the UK Beatles albums from 1963-1966 had a seven second break between songs. I loved it! It was like giving each song it's own spotlight. Oh, the days of one song at a time.

If you're looking for more than just the greatest hits of the Glenn Miller band but don't feel the need for the 13 CDs that make up The Complete Glenn Miller, this two-disc set is an excellent overview of the 1939-42 period, with far better sound than on earlier CD compilations. It contains both the big hits of the period, such as "Fools Rush in," and all the tunes that have stood the test of time, such as "Moonlight Serenade," "Pennsylvania 6-5000," and "Serenade in Blue." From the sheer beauty of Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" to the pioneer nostalgia of "Along the Santa Fe Trail" and the surprisingly effective swing treatment of Verdi's "Anvil Chorus," the set offers an appealing introduction to Miller's musical world. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Essential Glenn Miller...yes and no.......2006-04-17
This collection sounds pretty good, but it's a little heavy on the noise reduction in my opinion. As for the songs, all the "big" hits are included, but there's too many Ray Eberle ballads for my taste. A better balance of songs can be found on the 3 disc set "The Popular Recordings (1938-1942)". Less Eberle, and more Tex Beneke, Marion Hutton and instrumentals. As for the sound quality, it does have those "pops & scratches," but it's breathes better in my humble opinion. Let's face it, this stuff wasn't recorded digitally or even on analog tape.
Compare the samples of Moonlight Serenade (for example) on the these choices...
1) Essential Glenn Miller
2) Memorial 1944-1969
3) The Popular Recordings (1938-1942)
Essential Glenn Miller?
It'll do, but there are better.
Finally, why can't these compilations of old 78's have a few more seconds between them? Essentially we have a bunch of singles all crammed together, so why not let them have some breathing room. As I recall, the UK Beatles albums from 1963-1966 had a seven second break between songs. I loved it! It was like letting dust settle before being inundated with another song right away. It basically gives each song it's own spotlight. Oh, the days of one song at a time.
The Music of Our Lives.......2005-06-20
I have owned this for years and it is by far the finest Glenn Miller compilation I have ever run across. As you can see from the listing of songs not much is missed here. None of the well known favorites are missing and just a ton of great lesser known tunes are here. Miller and his band made magic and this 2-disc set will certainly cast a spell on you.
From the richly romantic to the light and breezy, Miller did it all. Amazingly, that versatility is the only thing 'critics' of Miller can find to gripe about. He tapped into different styles and made great music that was more accessible than Goodman and others. His popularity, then and now, does not detract from some of the greatest music ever made. The Miller sound has survived all these decades because of its greatness.
The sound is crisp and clean, these memorable recordings once again sounding as good as they must have when first released. As the decades have passed, our appreciation for Miller's music has only grown, those smooth big band rhythms with their catchy arrangements and attention to detail recognized now as some of the greatest music of our lives.
Miller's genius is all over every great selection here. Everyone will have their personal favorites on this set. "Perfidia" has such a catchy hook it sounds as fresh today as it did way back when. I can not think of a more romantic big band song than Miller's "I Know Why (And So Do You)."
And then there is "Moonlight Cocktails." If this Miller song doesn't make you happy, longing for the romance of another time, you just don't love music. It is probably my favorite on a set which includes "Moonlight Serenade," Little Brown Jug" and just about every other popular Miller tune.
For the money you simply can't beat this collection. The sound quality of this 2-disc set is incredible and you'd never know how many years these Miller classics have been around. Pick this one up so you can have it around all the time. It doesn't matter if you grew up with these songs, listened to them with your sweetheart or you weren't even born when these recordings were made. Miller's music was then, and still is, the music of our lives.
You'll long for a "Stairway to the Stars" to go get Miller and bring him back after a listen to this set. If only Miller were right, and wishing really would make it so.....
The Only Glenn Miller Collection You'll Ever Need.......2005-05-11
This 2 CD set is the best collection of Miller tunes I've ever heard.
The songs have been remastered and the sound quality is excellent, as if they had just been recorded!
If you are a fan of Big Band music you owe it to yourself to get this set.
SIMPLY AMAZING.......2005-01-27
WOW!! INCREDIBLE!! AMAZING!! What more can you say? If you dig the Wartime nostalgic moods of Glenn Miller look no further. This is the VERY BEST of Glenn Miller. Every cut is a jewel. WHEN THE TEMPO GETS SLOW, IT'S TIME TO TURN IT UP HIGH. You can almost see the dancers floating across the floor.
What ever happened to all this feel-good dance music? When musicians actually crafted musical feeling with real solid instruments and the people enjoyed themselves even though they were living through dark times. Man, I was born in the wrong era. I'm 44 and I've lived through every possible musical phase imaginable and for some reason I keep going back to the Golden Age of Jazz, Swing, and Doo Wop. Maybe because this music never fails to put a smile on my face. I love it. GLENN MILLER LIVES!!
THANKS RCA, FOR PRESERVING THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC IN A STUNNING COLLECTION. I'M BLOWN AWAY.
Cherish this music while you still can. IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.

Album Description
Subtitled - Best Of the Army & Civilian Bands. Glen Miller's reign as the most popular bandleader during the second world war came late in his career and was relatively brief, lasting only about three and a half years, from the spring of 1939 to the fall of 1942. But during that period he dominated popular music. Glenn Miller and his music will always remain special to a whole generation and this album brings together the best of that classic sound on 2CDs. 42 tracks. 2002.
