The band that proclaimed itself "The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World" has long since represented rock's most overarching confluence of art and commerce--with a distinct emphasis on the latter in recent decades--a notion this 40-track, five-decade-spanning anthology can't completely escape. While this is the first anthology to gather hits from the band's entire career, it's the early tunes that highlight one of the Stones' central ironies: virtually their entire "bad boy" reputation was built working for The Man. That original '60s musical arc bounded from '50s rock and R&B revivalism ("Not Fade Away," "The Last Time") to anti-Mop Top aggression ("Satisfaction," "Get Off My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown") to proto-goth cynicism ("Paint It Black," "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby") and psychedelic minstrelsy ("She's a Rainbow," "Ruby Tuesday") to the epitome of blues-based cock rock ("Street Fighting Man," "Jumpin' Jack Flash") in quick succession. Wresting control of their own destinies--and future copyrights--at the end of the '60s, they'd spend the next 30 years largely recycling their earlier incarnation ad infinitum--their music sprinkled with occasionally successful forays into contemporary club and disco fodder ("Some Girls," "Shattered")--and resting on their well-paid laurels. Unfortunately, the listless quartet of new tracks that flesh out this collection seems little more than another business deal to hype their 2002-03 world tour, with "Don't Stop" arguably the weakest in a long string of post-'80s Stones McSingles. If Jagger seems typically detached here, Keith Richards injects some welcome, craggy warmth into the closing barroom lament, "Losing My Touch." But it's also a performance that suggests his legendary band has become little more to him than "The Greatest Day Job in the World." --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Just amazing that one band could have this many hits.......2007-06-10
These guys must have sold their souls to the devil because there is no other way one band could strike gold so many times. You can simply put this CD into your player and be entertained for hours. The only reason to skip a song is because you want to hear one great song before you hear the other great song.
Great band. Great album. Nothing else to be said.
Classic Rolling Stones!!!! All their best stuff!!.......2007-04-08
A must have for any Stone's fans-even if your not. It has like 40 of their best well known songs, mostly their classics I believe. And a few new one's, like "love is strong". I highly reccommend this CD, you get to own a piece of the LEGENDS!!
Deja vu all over again.......2007-01-19
On the one hand, this is a nice compilation of the Rolling Stones' greatest hits from the early 1960s to the early 21st century. On the other hand, these tunes have appeared on other greatest hits albums, and some of the songs are not really among their best works. And, of course, one can always wonder why other songs (e.g., "Midnight Rambler") were not selected for this album.
Still, this does represent a greatest hits collection from the early years ("Not Fade Away" or "The Last Time") to their glorious 1960s hits (e.g., "Satisfaction," "Get off of My Cloud," "Street Fighting Man," "Jumping Jack Flash"--with one of the all time guitar riffs) to the early 1970s (e.g., "Brown Sugar," "Happy," Angie," etc. Later hits are also well represented, such as "Miss You," "Start Me Up," "Shattered" (one of my guilty pleasures), "Fool to Cry," and "Under Cover of the Night." The later songs are a bit weak (e.g., "Losing My Touch").
Overall, for those who have not been following Rolling Stones' music over the eons, this is not a bad introduction. For those steeped in Stones' works, this is, to some extent, "deja vu all over again."
Poor masters of great songs.......2007-01-09
It's too bad that those responsible for releasing Stones complilations can't seem to find (or bother to remaster like the Beatles re-releases) Stereo versions of all of their 60's material. Anybody listening to this collection on a good modern system will find some of the early tracks painfull and muddled. Even the later tracks chosen are the edited versions. Uneven releases by those controlling the Stones catalog are common. For example, every track on the Stones UK Aftermath release are in true stereo and sound crystal clear conversly all the songs on both versions of Out of Our Heads were released in mono only (remaster!). Talk about an uneven treatment of a catalog. There are no excuses why the best possible versions of every song could have been included in this release- they haven't, therefore the low rating.
If I had to pick one for a desert island..........2006-12-10
Over the past few years I've been forced to replace many of treasured and worn vinyl LP's with (shudder) digital re-issues that more often than not leave me disappointed, more due to crappy sonics and sloppy re-mastering than anything else...this collection is a pleasant surprise, high fidelity while remaining completely true to the original mixes--it's like I'm back in high school listening to the freshly-issued LP's. Some of my big favorites aren't included--"Can't You Hear Me Knocking," "Midnight Rambler," "Rocks Off," and a couple of others, while a few that scored as hits but didn't turn me on are present (anything new from the Stones was guaranteed to top the charts in the early 70's, but I personally didn't think "Angie," "Brown Sugar," or "Beast of Burden" were really up the standards of The World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band). The set contains four previously-unreleased songs and I'd rather have seen the left-out tunes that rocked (a "definitive collection" without Can't You Hear Me Knocking?...not). Disk one scores 100 percent, some of the selections on Disk two could be better but if I had to have a single Stones recording to replace my LP's this would be it...you can't capture more than 40 years of rock history on two measly CD's, I'll probably flesh it out with both Hot Rocks releases, but for ten bucks this is a bargain and a keeper.

Best Bet For The Casual Fan.......2007-06-17
This is a must have CD for any casual Rolling Stones or Classic Rock fan. It has, arguably, all of their greatest hits. The sound quality is excellent and at $25 it's a pretty good value especially considering the Top 40 garbage played on most radio stations will cost you $15 per CD nowadays.
All Great Songs.......2007-02-16
Every song on both discs are songs I remembered and enjoyed. If you are a Stones fan it doesn't get much better.
It's all about Losing My Touch.......2007-01-15
What need be said about the Stones song book that hasn't already been said? They are The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band simply because of their tunes. Most will love the older tunes more than the new ones, but those with open ears and minds should listen to Losing My Touch. Keith puts more emotion in the singing of that ballad than anything Mick has done in 20 years. Not always in key or in time, but Keef absolutley nails the sentiment of that tune. 10 stars for that song alone. The other new ones are disposable, but Losing My Touch is killer stuff!
A great gift .......2006-12-25
Having all but the originals from this collection on various other cds made this a continuous pass-over when I would visit record shops. Getting it for Christmas this morning, however, makes it well worth owning. For completists, you get the new stuff, for newbies it is a great overall introduction going up through Bridges to Babylon, and for collectors you get a beautiful softcover booklet with great photos and a brief essay and a very cool four-fold black and white poster of the five original lads that would look fantastic framed and hung on the wall of a Stones fan on your gift list.
There are arguments to be made for questionable inclusions and objectionable exclusions, but that is the case with any hits collection. I look at it as a very reasonably priced gift and I think the lucky ones who find it under their tree will agree. Merry Christmas!

Hicksville.......2007-06-01
No one styles tin pan alley as well as Dan. What a great show. You can feel his electricity.
A Cool Breeze On A Summer's Eve.......2006-07-11
Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks were truly a sport of nature, one of those unique creations that come out of nowhere and defy categorization. Part folk, part Django Reinhardt homage, part Western swing, and part tongue in cheek; this outfit was as marvelously cracked as the palm tree scenery they brought with them everywhere. They were smart - but never condescending to their audience. Overall their music had the gentle, pleasant texture of lazy summer evenings when there is lots of time, little to do, and nothing to worry about.
Hicks is a terrific front man, but the secret of this group is found in the talent surrounding him. The Lickettes (easily the greatest name ever for a team of female back-up vocalists) have exquisite voices, and add smooth sweetness wherever they're found. Maryann Price and Naomi Ruth Eisenberg both sound marvelous when they solo, but the blend of their voices is heaven.
Sid Page on violin (and mandolin) provides the instrumental juice reminding you of Stephane Grappelly and all those Western swingers, check him out on Flight Of The Fly. The humor of Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks ranges from mild, I'm An Old Cowhand, to broad, O'Reilly At The Bar, to goofy, The Laughing Song, but it is never mean. With this outfit, fun is the name of the game.
Despite the hip sensibility that characterizes Dan Hicks, he is never better than when he is overtly sentimental. Songs like I Scare Myself, Canned Music, and the Western lullaby Presently In The Past, are so beautiful that it hurts. Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks always were hard to pigeonhole, perhaps that's why they've weathered the years so well. This one is just pure delight, can't recommend it highly enough.
'I Scare Myself' one of the finest songs ever recorded........2005-12-04
Not quite up to par with the 'Where's the Money' live lp but still filled with beautiful songs. Yeah, the LP cover opens like a matchbook. Cleva'. Dan always had style. The real point is to get every one of his 70's records because there's amazing songs on each one. This album probably is not well known out in the world. If you want humor/drivin' sound/violin/bluegrass/smarty pants lyrics/emotion in almost every song and going to a musical place that is like your own private vacation, buy this album. chrisbct@hotmail.com

By far his best of the best.
Great performance.......2007-01-03
From the 70's Dan hicks has been a great performer in pop, blues, funk, rockabilly, and country genres of music. Multi-talented, this band can do it all and sound great today as they did in the past. Great selections of tracks.
5 stars, more if you got 'em........2005-12-04
Possibly the finest live record ever released. It's one of those records that is so fluid, smooth, humerous and swingin' musically, that it sets a standard rarely, if ever matched for a live release. I'm a big fan of DAN HICKS and his HOT LICKS. They're all great records. But this one is the best one. Flawless. Song after song dancing blithly past your ears in perfect harmony and pacing. Dan always has been able to create music that is unique. I've never known what to properly call it. Swing/jazz, bluegrass, hippy music, folk rock, violin band. Heck, there's just nothing that really says it properly. Quite an achievement. His humerous remarks between songs really brings the record to an even higher level artisticly. I have loved this album for maybe 30 years and expect to always. Thanks guys. Any other old material you find layin' around that you wanna' release such as the 'Muse' record and more, please, feel free. What pleasure. chrisbct@hotmail.com
A Top 10 recording in my lifelong collection.......2005-11-18
If I have a CD in my car CD Changer that is an original recording from 1971, that tells me it has withstood the test of time. This album brings the listener to the foot of the stage to witness one of the most interestingly unique, entertaining and underrated songwriters and performers of our time, on a night when his band, and this album, was captured live, like a lightening bug in a bottle.
First introduced to me by my older sister Laurie, when I was a kid, the tunes, lyrics, and good old toe tappin' delight of this watershed album is in fact, highly contagious. Hicks blends humor and heartache, and puts them to musical beats & dramatic dynamics like no one else ever has. That said, there are some serious harmonies going on here, as well as masterful musicianship from a very talent group of musicians.
In my 45 years on this planet, I've turned hundreds of friends and acquaintances onto this Dan Hicks album, and others of his as well. It's just plain wonderful feel good music. Truth be told, I sometimes close my eyes, sing, and somehow pretend I was one of the lucky ones sitting in the audience that magical night, when this wonderful album was recorded live at the World famous Troubadour night club in Los Angeles, California. You can certainly tell the audience had a blast, and you will too. Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks have stood the test of time.

Great Recording.......2007-05-12
I have been a Dan Hicks fan for years. This album (CD) is one of his top three. I highly recommend it.
Enjoy.
Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys meet Manhattan Transfer.......2006-10-12
Or Spike Jones meets Asleep at the Wheel? Cowboy music for city slickers? Dan's band was a revolving door with many permutations and pretty tough to classify. The one thing you can tell is that they sure did have fun making this music. 'Last Train to Hicksville' has always been my personal favorite. It's their tightest (all things being relative--these were pretty loose folks) sounding effort with an eclectic mix of songs for all ages and the best corp of Lickettes.
Not the Last VW to Hicksville.......2006-06-06
I was soooo stoked when my ex-boyfriend Joe popped this tape in my car one day. It never, ever, never ever EVER came out of there again....until we broke up (it WAS his, I'm not cruel!) And besides, I found it on Vinyl up in Portland 2 years later! Delicious, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, how can you NOT like everything this guy does? Even my grampa likes this record, and BTW I'm 24, he's 84. :)
The final flowering of an awesome band.......2005-12-31
The addition of drums and electric (Charlie Christian-esque) guitar pushes this to the top of the heap as regards Hicks. Yeah, the songwriting includes Naomi Ruth Eisenberg's "Success," but that is what your skip button is for. I wish he had signed with a different label than Blue Thumb...they went belly up and just couldn't promote these guys the way Warner's pushed Maria Muldaur, who (though I love her) isn't quite Maryann Price's equal. Swings sweetly, with humor.
Part of the 5? awesome 70's lps from Dan Hicks & his H.L.s.......2005-12-04
Really, once you're a fan, you can't overlook this album. There's too much on it that delights. More of the same vein of music that the band cranked out to perfection on 'Where's the Money' and their other 70's albums. Light hearted, fun, emotionally involving. It's gotta be a combo of the song writing and the various musicians who blend together to make this magic sound. There's not the same consistency of classic songs here but it's a lovely album nonetheless. Been listening to all their albums from the 70's since the 70's and they all age very well. chrisbct@hotmail.com

Great CD!.......2007-01-03
Great performance by a tight hip band and solo artist. Dan's "I Scare Myself" is the best cut on this disk. You'll enjoy it! Dan still got it!
From Boulder 1972 to New Jersey 2002.......2002-03-19
30 years ago (yikes!) I saw Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks at a bar on the Hill in Boulder called Tulagi. Bought the album and listened to it until it died.
Last night "The Sopranos" closed out with "Where's the Money". I went to Amazon to see if just possibly, I could find the CD. How cool that there are 4 to choose from! Still fresh, still toe-tappin', feelin' good music.
Hickin' and clickin'.......2000-10-20
I met Dan in a bar in Philadelphia in '71, it was just before his show. He seemed quiet and pensive. The show began and he transformed the place with his palm tree backdrops and the Lickettes. Their music style was unique even back then, melding 40's swing with country, rock and humor. 30 years later I listen to the songs, a smile spreads across my face and my feet start bopping. As musicians they're really tight. The music is, so from the heart, honest. Attitude is a little Steve Martin with a lot of soul. Treat your self to this album it will definately lift you!
There has never been another group like these guys........2000-03-25
The spring I graduated from high school, my boyfriend and I saw these guys open for Elton John of all people. We couldn't believe our ears. They were the hippest, tightest, swinging-est band we'd ever heard. In fact, most of the audience didn't know what to make of them, but I found a lifelong favorite. Give this disk a listen.
You will be enjoying this music 25 years from now!!!.......1999-10-04
I have enjoyed this musician and entertainer since the 70's. I may put him on the shelf for a while, but I always come back. If you ever get a change to see him, do it.

Album Description
Second full-length album (and third release overall) from this Alterna-Rock band fronted by actress Juliette Lewis. Since the release of their debut album, the Licks have established an unshakable presence as a live act, then their first stable line-up brought with it the chance to develop as a song writing unit. Writing as they toured, the band concentrated on capturing their stage energy to provide a definitive Licks sound for the next record. Unfortunately, the departure of their drummer at the end of the year left them drummerless. Luckily, the road had also seen their paths cross with someone who would play an instrumental role in the most important chapter of their career - Foo Fighters front man and former Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl. Originally brought in to play on demos the band recorded at his 606 Studio in California, Grohl extended his stay for the album. Features 10 tracks including the single 'Hot Kiss'. Hassle. 2006.

Wow!!!.......2007-05-06
I just happened to stumble upon a few tracks from this album on their myspace page. I was actually on the Juliana Hatfield page, and noticed "Juliette and the Licks" as one of her friends. Now, I had heard of them through some hollywood gossip TV rag like Entertainment Tonight, YEARS AGO...and I thought..."yeah, Juliette Lewis, probably just another in a long line of actresses who thinks she's a singer. She's hot, but no, I won't be buying her music...its probably crap." Well, I was VERY WRONG! I went to their myspace page and was immediately sucked in. Juliette has a great, raunchy, voice and the instrumentals match it. The intrumentals are excellent too, BTW...kind of bluesy punk (heh...now isn't THAT a cool combination!) Over [...] bucks is a bit much to pay for ANY CD, so I went to another on-line vendor to buy it for almost half. The five tracks I heard on their myspace page though...RAWKED!!!
4 on the floor-juliette & the licks.......2007-04-05
really good cd. cool angry girl rock. i wish it was available in the states without having to get your eyes poked for 30 dollars a copy. oh well, it's available for download on itunes.
Juliette has the chops to do music!!.......2007-03-18
This is a straight forward, onward moving ROCK ALBUM with some flairs of punkishness. I would never have known about Juliette and her band and her skills till I saw her perform on LONDON LIVE on an HD Channell. This album rocks! Get it!
Must have CD.......2006-12-27
all the songs are great on this cd i was bummed when it was over and had to hit the button to start it all over again.
my absolute fave song is Hot Kiss and you gotta love Death of a whore, but all songs are great on this cd.
cd insert does have the lyrics and with the song death of a whore i am surprised it doesnt have a explicit language warning.
dont miss out on this CD is is a must!!!
even if you havent bought her cds before this would be a great one to begin with, it is far the best one she has done so far.
Killer Album!.......2006-10-25
Juliette Lewis's second full-length album starts very aggressively with "Smash And Grab". You could say that the whole album is full of aggressive songs both melodically and lyrically. The next song "Hot Kiss" is one of the best songs in the album. The lyrics are quite dark, for example "Killer", "Purgatory Blues", "Mind Full of Daggers", and "Death of a Wh*re" are great examples. Juliette sings very aggressively and this album does not give any rest. This is heavy metal. Juliette Lewis is awesome! This album is one of the best albums of 2006!!!

Album Description
"Few have the touch of Bob Florence." -- JazzTimes
"Bob Florence is a pianist of unequalled harmonic virtuosity, as well as a composer and arranger of both sensitivity and power. Florence brings a mystical romanticism on the one hand and a driving potency on the other ... he assembles the finest musicians in the world and they respond brilliantly as a unit and individually." -- Jazz Review
"No other big band arranger and composer does it quite like Bob Florence does. Pyramid entrances by section and by individual, suite-like compositions that pierce the air with vivid memories, dramatic context that puts the listener on the edge of his seat, humorous asides and funny titles: these are the elements that intrigue both the performing artist and the satisfied audience." -- John Gilbert
"Swinging and original-sounding music and arrangements from a multitalented musician who has been a composer, arranger, bandleader, keyboardist, accompanist, and jazz educator ... the musicians in this band are obviously here because they love it and the results do sound like it." -- Audiophile Audition
The first new recording on MAMA in years! Bob Florence is a Grammy Award winner and has received an incredible fifteen Grammy nominations in addition to two Emmy Awards. "Eternal Licks & Grooves," commissioned by ASCAP and IAJE to honor Count Basie, premiered in January 2005 at the IAJE convention in Long Beach. "Appearing in Cleveland," commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute to honor Stan Kenton, premiered in March 2004 at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles.

More of Bob Florence's Creative Spirit.......2007-04-09
The announced release date of a new Bob Florence Limited Edition CD always brings a heightened degree of anticipation within the big band jazz community. This is because Bob Florence is arguably the pre-eminent composer/arranger in big band jazz today (and certainly among the top three). Furthermore, the Limited Edition band ranks just as highly within the echelon of large jazz ensembles. But "Eternal Licks and Grooves" (recorded in 2006 or perhaps 2005 - the Cd booklet is not clear), raised even more anticipation among big band afficionados than usual. This was probably due to the fact that the CD would contain two of Bob's most recent major compositions which had been heard in concert over the past few years. Well, now that the CD is here, it is a joy to report that it meets and even exceeds all expectations.
What must be commented on first are these major compositions, both 14 minutes in length. The title track which opens the CD is Bob's tribute to Count Basie, while "Appearing in Cleveland" which closes the CD, is Bob's tribute to Stan Kenton. These compositions are most interesting in that each draws on major themes from these bandleaders' respective repertoires, yet in the end come across as pure Bob Florence, hard-driving, cutting edge (but within limits), creative jazz which both surprises and satisfies the listener.
But in truth Bob's creative spirit shines throughout the CD, on two more Florence originals, "Mirror Image" and Guiding Star", as well as three standards, "Clair De Lune", "Invitation" and "I'm Old Fashioned". Bob's ability to start a chart slowly and build it to a dramatic climax while keeping the listener fully engaged on the road is unparalleled. "Invitation" is a prime example, opening with Bob's reflective piano solo, building through a series of theme statements and swinging solos to a roaring shout chorus. Something similar takes place on "Clair De Lune", and on the more gentle "Mirror Image."
Florence's Limited Edition is gifted with the best musicians possible, and they dig into the music with great spirit and drive, and also much deep feeling when needed. For the latter, check out Bob Carr on baritone sax and Bob McChesney on trombone on "Guiding Star", and Alex Isles on trombone on "Old Fashioned" which is one the most beautiful theme statements this listener has ever heard. The band's ensemble playing is impeccable with top drawer soloists such as trumpeters Larry Lunnetta, Ron Stout, Carl Saunders and Steve Huffsteter, trombonist Scott Whitfield, saxophonists Kim Richmond, Don Shelton, Jeff Driskoll, Tom Peterson and Bob Efford adding personal and powerful statements. Perhaps the star of the CD apart from the leader is guitarist Larry Koonse whose comping and solos add a slightly different but most effective color to the music. Be not afraid, Koonse is no rock `n roll guitar distorter! The rhythm section of Peter Erskine on drums and Trey Henry on bass drive these often complex charts with flair and driving swing.
"Eternal Licks" and Grooves" is a masterpiece 70 minute CD, perhaps slightly more accessible on initial listening than a couple of Bob's recent Limited Edition recordings. The recording quality is very clear and well balanced, though a little distant, so that one will have to turn up the volume to get the full dynamic impact of the music (especially the shout choruses). "Eternal Licks and Grooves" is highly recommended to listeners of modern big band jazz and will certainly be among the top three or four big band releases of 2007. For many listeners it will be at the top of the list.

The Rolling Stones have built themselves a fine conundrum with this double-disc anthology culled from performances on their 40th Anniversary tour of 2002-03, releasing arguably their most comprehensive and compelling live recording at a moment in history when it seems to matter least. The Stones' by now overwhelming spate of live albums has consistently been the most disappointing part of their considerable oeuvre, but the band--particularly the chunky/bluesy twin guitar locomotion of Keith Richards and Ron Wood--are in a form here that rivals the halcyon touring behind Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. Befitting this tour's anniversary aims, they tackle material that ranges from their original Brit Invasion roots ("Satisfaction," "Paint It Black") through 70's superstardom (with Sheryl Crow guesting on "Honky Tonky Women") and a middle-age that was anything but staid. Disc two is largely given over to paying energetic, loving tribute to roots heroes like B.B. King ("Rock Me, Baby"), Otis Redding ("That's How Strong My Love Is") and even Hoagy Carmichael (Richards' raggedly sweet "The Nearness of You"), concluding the show with Mick Jagger's voice triumphantly being joined by soul legend Solomon Burke on a buoyant, gospel-fervent version of his "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A trifle less satanic collection of classics.......2007-04-05
The Stones get three points for filling this double CD with favorites such as "Monkey Man" that haven't appeared on previous live albums. The problem is that Mick can't hit the same notes that he could hit when he was 27. "Rocks Off" is downright painful as he ratchets his vocals down. I'd rather hear "no" Rocks Off than a painfully labored version. What MADE the original a classic was its "shot out of a cannon" arrogance. It's like Mick thought about the best part of the song and concluded "Well, we can do without THAT..." No we CAN'T, Mick! The wonderful and amazing Lisa Fischer once again accents "Gimme Shelter," but her ultimate performance of this track can be found on the Japanese import CD single of the "Stripped" version of "Wild Horses" (director Martin Scorsese lifted her bone-chilling vocal solo from that version for a climactic moment in his film "Casino"). There are NO jaw-dropping performances in this set, and with all due respect to the band's fans (I'm one of them), there SHOULD be. Mick's coasting his way through, and to a lesser degree, so are Woody & Keith (although "Happy" is better than the majority of what Mick phones in here). To paraphrase KISS via Homer Simpson, "the Stones used to rock and roll all night and party ev-er-y day. Then it was every other day." Maybe "Live Licks" should have stayed in the vaults. Former strutting rooster Jagger sounds like the heavily bruised veteran of one too many cockfights, and that's sad.
Still The Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band Around.......2007-02-08
I may be one of the few Stones fans left who still enjoys the live albums that follow every tour. Stripped and No security were both great from start to finish. Live Licks continues that tradition. I don't need to hear the live versions of Satifaction or Brown Sugar for the 10,000th time, but when they're placed along side Gimme Shelter, Rocks Off, Monkey Man and Can't You Hear Me Knocking, it all sounds just right. Now Keith, get the Winos together for one more album/tour!!!!
Great album.......2006-10-04
i luv this album. its a little unnecessary for its time. although its great to here some new songs from their tour. oh yeah and i choke the chicken whenever i see the album cover. very hot! imagine a girl or a guy licking you.
A redundant live album!.......2006-03-09
I love the stones. no doubt about it. I have all there albums that they had ever released. Im just wondering why almost all of the songs in LIVE LICKS,particularly in side 1, they had done before in previous Live albums. Any die hard stone fan would be very happy to hear live versions of songs they had done in the past. Live licks could have been much, much better if they had included songs like....SHE'S A RAINBOW, DANDELION, SHE'S SO COLD, ONE HIT TO THE BODY, ALL ABOUT YOU, LOVE IS STRONG,AS TEARS GO BY, LADY JANE,WE LOVE YOU, 2000 LIGHT YEARS FROM HOME,INDIAN GIRL, LITTLE T&A, HANG FIRE, MOTHERS LITTLE HELPER, DON'T STOP,WINNING UGLY, SALT OF THE EARTH, PLAY WITH FIRE, etc, etc.
Anyway, im still anticipating another live stones album in the near future. Hope they do included some of the songs above. Im sure they will release another Live album because the Roliing Stones are here to stay!!!!!!!!
Where's Ronnie?.......2005-12-20
While many of the reviews here are slagging the performances found on this 2 CD set, my only gripe is with the mix. I've got many Stones live releases from various stanges in their career, and the performances found on Live Licks don't really strike me as being sub-par (the best, of course, being on "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!" which continues to be the band's gold standard for live releases).
But what does stick out like a sore thumb is the terrible mix. I thought something was wrong with my car stereo at first, until I played the CD's on a variety of different stereos and came to the conclusion that it just sounds that way. For one thing, Keef is mixed WAY too loud. Keith Richards' guitar is cranked to 11, while the entirety of the rest of the band is at about a 6. I love Keith's playing as much as the next guy, but when you have these CD's cranked, his jagged riffs slice into your brain like a ninja sword, while it's tough to make out anything else that's going on. Ronnie Wood is all but invisible here. A big part of the Stones sound is the way he and Keith weave their parts in and out of each other. When it's just Keef, part of the magic is lost, and the sound is noticeably thinner. Even Charlie's drums are buried in the mix. Anyone wanting to hear Keith's guitar playing front and center to try to learn his style will love this CD set, but for those looking for the STONES sound, you may find the sound quality lacking here.
I do like some of the nuggets here that were somewhat unexpected, like Muddy Waters' "Rock Me," and Keef's "You Don't Have to Mean it," from Bridges to Babylon. Of course the trusty warhorses are acounted for, such as "Brown Sugar" and "Satisfaction," but let's be honest - is any fan of the Stones going to get mad and skip to the next song if they hear "Honky Tonk Women" one more time? Not likely. The warhorses are equally pleasing here, and sound as good as you're used to hearing them (except for the mix, of course).
All in all, this is a solid live release from a far-more-than-solid live band. I suspect that with the edits and poor mix, this was something hurried to the shelves, and more care could have been taken with it. I also suspect that most of the anger surrounding the negative reviews are from people who have a dozen other live Stones CD's, and they keep expecting "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out, Part II" with each new release. That's probably not going to happen, but while I'm waiting, Live Licks is more than good enough to pass the time.

Although the title might be questionable, this compilation of Hicks's 1969 debut Epic album, Original Recordings, with seven tracks intended for an unreleased follow-up is manna for longtime fans. The Hot Licks' eccentric combination of folk, country, and old-timey parlor music with often Zappa-esque absurd humor still sounds fresh today, perhaps because it already sounded apart from its time 30 years ago. Hicks recorded two of these tracks for last year's excellent Beatin' the Heat comeback, but Original Recordings is the one that put him on the map. It's the one college kids listened to in dorm rooms while doing whatever throughout the first half of the 1970s. It's the one that inspired Thomas Dolby to cover and score an alternative hit with "I Scare Myself." "Milk Shakin' Mama" remains one of Hicks's all-time best efforts, and, with one exception, the demos fit right in, each of them a newly discovered gem. A true hippie classic. --Bill Holdship

Dan is the Man.......2007-06-02
If you don't know and love Dan by now, what can I say?
This cd is tons o' fun.
The old material here is slightly different from the other recordings you may already have and you will like them, trust me.
A great intro to give someone who doesn't already know these guys.
The master of swing with great backup singers and brilliant musicians.
I'll split the difference.......2006-07-01
Yes, great to have the Epic recordings on CD along with the unissued stuff from the great lost second album, however unfinished. No, the reordering and absence of songs from the first album is inexcusable. We liked it just the way it was, y'know? Strange minds out there.
most ... almost.......2003-10-22
OK the remastering gave a bit of a sparkle to the CD - but my advice to a potential purchaser (esp. vintage fans) of this CD is - don't bother. Seek out the CDs with the original track listings. I found the bonus tracks pretty lame reworkings of the original. To me, they sound like out-takes that thankfully didn't make it onto the original recordings.
I've been a big fan of Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks since first hearing them back in 1976. I have all the vinyl - and later, most of the CDs.
One star for the remastering.
I Scare Myself.......2003-06-23
I scare myself just thinking about how happy I am that I am getting this CD after all these years! This is still my favorite Dan Hicks album, although I do love "Strikin' It Rich" also. This music is so much fun. Of course it brings back early seventies "cooler than thou" memories....frye boots an'all but really it remains fresh and funny and acoustic and just damned wonderful. Reward yourself!
Fantastic sound.......2003-04-19
I admit that I am giving this 5 stars just because of the fantastic sound quality. This is not Dan Hicks best album musically, but it sounds the best. It does contain early versions of many of his most popular songs.
Dan Hicks recorded one album for Epic records, called Original Recordings. It had 11 tracks. He also recorded a number of songs for a second album that was never released. This CD contains 9 of the 11 tracks from Original Recordings, plus 7 tracks that were meant to be released on the second album. The CD is 65 minutes long. I don't know why 2 tracks from Original Recordings were left off of this CD. I have never heard the LP version of Original Recordings, so I don't know what those 2 missing songs are like.
Original Recordings did not sell well, and Dan Hicks moved from Epic Records to Blue Thumb Records. He released a number of albums for Blue Thumb. Through the years, he redid most of the best songs on Original Recordings and put them on his new Blue Thumb albums (like Strikin' It Rich and Where's The Money).
The problem is that most of Dan Hick's CD re-issues have horrible sound. MCA bought out Blue Thumb. MCA has done very cheap CD releases of classic albums from their catalog. The sound quality is very poor. It is flat, muddled and has no dynamic range. Also, the packaging is very cheap. Only the front side of the album cover would be reproduced. The production details would be typed on the backside. I admit, that I bought my CD's (Striking It Rich, Where's the Money, Last Train to Hicksville) when they first came out. There is a possibility that MCA has improved the sound since then.
On this CD, The Most of Dan Hicks, the sound quality is excellent on the first 9 songs. It is crystal clear, with a high dynamic range. It just resonates. On the last 7 tracks, the sound quality is also very good, but there is a high end buzz that can be heard when cymbals are played or during the female vocals. But even with the buzz, the sound quality is still better than the MCA CD's.
On the first 9 tracks, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, have an even more stripped down and accoustic sound than usual. Some parts are just vocals and a guitar or violin, with no bass or drums. It still sounds great.
This album contains early versions of many of the Dan Hick's classics, such as I Scare Myself, Canned Music and News From Up The Street. I prefer the later versions of these songs, where they are a bit more amplified and more rock oriented. But, since the CD's of the later verisons of the songs have such bad sound, overall, I like this album better.
This album does contain some goofy songs in the middle, but overall, I really enjoy.
I once saw Dan Hicks play in a bar in Tucson. He had broken up the Hot Licks and was now playing in a band called Dan Hick's Accoustic Warrior, which had no female back up singers. His popularity was down. He was scheduled for 2 shows, but the second show did not sell well. They gave free tickets to those who attended the first show. I only saw the second show. Dan Hicks was so drunk that he forgot the words to a song and had to start it over. All in all, it wasn't a very good concert. But, I have seen him at verious reunions of the Hot Licks, and he has been very good.
Interesting note: David LaFlamme, from It's A Beautiful Day, was the original violin player in the Hot Licks, but left before an album was recorded. He was replaced by Sid Page, who also appeared on many other people's albums (including It's A Beautiful Day) and did the soundtracks for tons of movies.
