Album Description
"Old World to New Age" traverses the musical timeline from Baroque to Contemporary. The works encompass several genres - vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental - that Gary Ross and Lawrence Kursar creatively arranged for this unique trio. From the "Old World" Band du Soleil presents Manfredini's Concerto - originally written for two trumpets and orchestra - and Purcell's "Sound the Trumpet" - originally written as a vocal duet. Mozart's "Alleluia" - from "Exultate Jubilate" and composed for soptrano and orchestra - takes on a new life as a trio for brass and piano. The journey from the "Old World" continues to the opera stage with transcriptions of the arias from "Gianni Schicchi", "The Barber of Seville" and the exquisite duet from "The Pearl Fishers." Moving to Russia, the hauntingly beautiful "Vocalise" of Rachmaninov and the colorful excerpts from Moussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" lead the transition to the New Age. Satie's "Gymnopedie" create a fascinating atmosphere of mysticism and exoticism. George Gershwin's "Classic Medley" is a collage of his classic works "Piano Preludes I & II" and "Rhapsody in Blue." The journey into the "New Age" culminates with jazz arrangements of timeless spirituals from the African -American culture.

What a great typo THAT was ... thank you, other Mr. Kramer.

This is an excellent CD. The sound quality is superb, and Xumantra allows the natural harmonics and resonances of each bowl to shine through, both individually and in combination with other bowls. The flow of the pieces is superb, and the music created is truly -- and I know this word is utterly overused, particularly in these types of recordings -- transcendant.

If you want the best in singing bowels, I highly suggest a homemade bean burrito -- none of that frozen stuff. And use a little pork fat, while you're at it.

If you want the best in singing bowls, pick up this CD. For meditation, for relaxation/sleepytime, and for listening to the sublime and subtle resonances of these simple-seeming instruments, give a listen to Xumantra.

I was hoping for something alittle more lyrical....little use of the higher octave bowls here....the ones that produce the most pleasant sounds. This CD will be excellent for meditation, however, since the reverberations of the bowls literally "penetrate" the body and, therefore, carry you to a different plane of consciousness. But to use as "quiet backround" in the home this CD isn't "pleasant" enough...I had hoped to use it for that purpose too.

What makes this outstanding is the way it is recorded...many of this type of recordings become very soft and then abruptly become loud and "blow your trance" or if your using this for sleep music wake you up in a jarring manner...this Cd is as good if not better than any of the singing bowels and this and Karma Moffet are the two best by light years....

    These CD's contain kown, very known (Canteloube, Bach transcriptions), and rarities. Its often delirious, and the orchestrations are rewritten (Dvorak nine, Tchaikowsky six). But Brahms five and Beethoven third are very serious and have good place in a plethoric discography. Mahlers second is a reference, and we have a grandios Wagner, with "just enough customization" The sound is remastered, good quality but a little sharp (Brahms-Shostakowitch). Anyway an essential contribution to the music by a great monster of the conducting. Stokowski: often imited, never matched. Indispensable !!

      "Athena - The Best of George Skaroulis" is an eight-year retrospective of this artist's most impressive body of work. The sixteen tracks include four never-released pieces, so even if you own all of Skaroulis' previous albums, this is still a must-have. Known for his evocative blending of piano and keyboard as well as traditional Greek musical idioms and contemporary piano stylings, the title track is a bit of a surprise with its Yanni-like big sound. The song was originally released on "Return to the Homeland" in a somewhat different format, and that version is also included on the album. This track includes piano, a beautiful violin part played by Paul Mercer, percussion, and additional keyboards. Rhythmic and celebratory, it is very Greek in style and sound. A great start! The only piece on the CD that isn't original is Skaroulis' lovely arrangement of "Hymn to Liberty (The Greek National Anthem)." Presented as a piano solo, its simple melody is haunting. "Goddess" is another new track, and is one of Skaroulis' most beautiful pieces. A melancholy piano is accompanied with Jairaj Swann on electric bass and Alex Wolf on guitar, along with elegantly interwoven synth parts that give it an ethereal quality. "The Dance" clocks in a less than a minute, and demonstrates that less can truly be more - a perfect solo piano vignette. I also really love "Return to Patmos," a reflective and haunting piano piece with synth strings washes that actually enhance the piece. "Voice of the Ancients" is the fourth of the new pieces, and includes a male voice speaking in the background behind shimmering string and synth sounds. Another vignette, it's an interesting interlude. Other titles include "Numinous," "Reflection," and "Hopes and Dreams." All of the tracks have obviously been carefully and caringly selected, and there isn't a weak track on the album. If you are new to George Skaroulis' music, this is an outstanding introduction to his work. One of my favorite artists, Skaroulis deserves a much wider audience. Very highly recommended!
