Outstanding Performances of 2 Martin Masterpieces.......2007-04-10
The great Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974) wrote his "short oratorio" IN TERRA PAX [Peace on Earth] in 1944, in response to a commission from Radio Geneva for a work to be broadcast at the time of the (anticipated) end of hostilities of World War II. Despite the Latin title, the Biblical texts - a very personal choice & arrangement by the composer - are set in the vernacular (ie. French). Part One, which begins with a setting of the description of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, evokes the horrors & profound suffering of war; Part Two, the joy & celebration that comes with the arrival of terrestrial peace; Part Three, the quiet spiritual heart of the work, introduces "a new idea, that of Christ" through the prophecy of Isaiah taken to prefigure the Messiah's coming, excerpts from Christ's teachings (the Beatitudes) & a setting of the Our Father; Part Four completes the piece with a vision of celestial, eternal Peace. Martin's music throughout is eloquent, direct & passionate, one of the masterpieces of 20th century choral repertoire. I find this 1990 performance one of the best overall since the classic 1962 version conducted by Ernest Ansermet (who, like the tenor on that recording, Ernst Haefliger, participated in the 1st performance), still available on London 448 264-2 (an essential Martin collection). [Update: there is now - 2007 - an electrifying version by Marcello Viotti, coupled with Martin's GOLGOTHA and PILATE, on Haenssler, a 3CD set.] Like Ansermet, conductor Michel Corboz binds the 11 separate numbers tightly together, & he has a fine orchestra & chorus to work with, as well as a strong team of 5 soloists, with baritone Philippe Huttenlocher outstanding.
Go back 15 years & here is Corboz conducting the world premiere of Martin's final work, the chamber cantata ET LA VIE L'EMPORTA [And Life Won the Day, or And Life Triumphed], written for Corboz's Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne. Composed in the shadow of serious illness - Martin worked on the piece until 10 days before his death - this wonderful work, for a typically idiosyncratic small group of singers & instrumentalists, draws together 3 unrelated texts that dissolve the boundaries dividing "sacred" & "secular" & gives them an inspired & ultimately uplifting setting - worth to stand beside the cantatas of Martin's lifelong master, J.S. Bach. This "original cast recording" is excellent, & despite a fine recent (2002) version by the Netherlands Chamber Choir (Q Disc Q 97056) obviously retains a unique place in the Martin discography. Highly recommended.
