A Wonderful Introduction to 'Die Fledermaus'.......2003-12-15

This is one of the continuing series of 'Opera Explained' discs put out by Naxos. Written by Thomson Smillie and narrated by British actor David Timson, the series goes from triumph to triumph. This is due largely to Smillie's witty and informative text and Timson's light-hearted narration. An unbeatable combination. And when you throw in musical illustrations drawn from Naxos's own full-opera releases, in this case that conducted by Johannes Wildner leading forces from Slovakia (a terrific recording), it is simply sparkling. Both the principal singers and the orchestral playing are world-class.

The issue of 'Fledermaus: Opera or Operetta?' is explored. We also get the history of Strauss family and more particularly the background of the opera itself. Then we get a lavishly illustrated synopsis. You'll almost certainly want to get up and waltz around the room.

I can easily imagine operatic neophytes being caught up in this production and deciding they wanted more. That's easy: there are now a total of fifteen 'Opera Explained' issues from Naxos.

Great Recordings at an Unbelievable Price.......1999-10-17

This is a great recording of songs for the price. Although I found the Vienna Strauss Orchestra conducted by Joseph Francek not as vibrant as similar compositions conducted such as by Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic, or Franz Welzer-Most/London Philharmonic. The later seem to be more complete not lacking a sense of fullness. But for the price you can't beat this collection. This CD includes:

The producers of this Johann Strauss Jnr Edition evidently decided to lump together various minor, unfinished, and largely forgotten items and allocate them to the last two volumes in the series. Of all members of the Viennese Strauss Family, Johann Jnr seems to have achieved the most consistently high level of achievement, but it is rarely glimpsed in the items assembled here. An exception, of course, is the bravura vocal waltz "Frühlingsstimmen", performed here in a complete nine-minute version. The soprano is Marilyn Hill Smith, heard also in several other items, including the much less interesting vocal waltz, "Klug Gretelein", which she was the first singer to record several years earlier on the Chandos label.
