Once an Outlaw, later a Highwayman, now an elder statesman, Willie Nelson joins forces with Merle Haggard and Ray Price (both of whom have recorded duet albums with Nelson) in a celebration of the classic country song. Everything about this is defiantly old school, from the production by veteran Fred Foster and the musical support from steel guitarist Buddy Emmons and Texas Playboy fiddler Johnny Gimble and vocal backing from the Jordanaires to songs from the likes of Harlan Howard, Leon Payne, and Lefty Frizzell. For all of the artists' generational ties, their differences are what distinguish the project: Nelson is the reediest and most conversational vocalist, Haggard the bluesiest; and Price remains the quintessential countrypolitan crooner. Whether they're harmonizing on Mickey Newbury's "Sweet Memories" or trading verses on Howard's "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down," the vocal blend suggests old friends having the time of their musical lives. Album Description

Let's be clear: Last of the Breed is a story - actually, a novel, if not an epic - unto itself. The title sums it up pretty well: On these two discs three classic performers, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard, band together on songs they've known and loved for years.

Their contributions don't need elaboration. Each is a legend. All three hark back to a time that's in some ways gone. When you consider the lives they've lived, the world that formed them as artists, and even the landscapes they knew as they began playing in beer joints and backwater clubs long ago, then the truth of those four words, Last of the Breed, comes clear.

Look a little closer, and they take on another reference, to the songs as well as to the giants who celebrate them here. Whether drawn from deep in the tradition, back from the well of Gene Autry, Lefty Frizzell, and Floyd Tillman, or picked from the more recent catalogs, this music conveys a feeling that might be mistaken for nostalgia but is in fact a timeless eloquence.

This CD is a well rounded selection of music with three of the best artists to deliver it. When it comes to Country music, these three artists can give you the best there is. The production is first class and this is a big part of the sound. If you haven't purchased this album, do so. You'll love it.

ANYTIME willie and ray have ever gotten together to record it has been a TREASURE for your ears . WILLIES VOICE WORKS WELL with any ray price style music . And vice versa . many a people will say oh waylon/ willie were the best together . And yeah they were very good . But for some reason these two know when to let the other shine and when it is time to carry a part in any given song .BETTER then any other two singers in any music format . Then THERE IS merle who is so good at what he does that people dont realize it is the music behind him that has made him shine .He knows so well how to use the band behind him it is awesome .Anytime you get a recording of merle you will see he knows how to use every bit player around him so well that it seems each are enjoying themself s so much that it just has to be great . But this IS ALMOST the last of the breed . This would have been the last of a breed if the three artists that were left out at least made a little showing on this recording. yes the other three that would have made this release complete would have been the 3 top guys left . GEORGE JONES / HANK JR / GENE WATSON . and these 6 are the last of the best of the best left touring . THIS LIST IS THE LIST OF ARTISTs THAT NO ONE WILL EVER FILL THIER SHOES .

What's not to like about this album? Great singers, old familiar songs, it seems like just my cup of tea. But, for whatever reason, this music just didn't "click" with me. After just a couple of listens, I found myself skipping over these CDs in my CD player. I realize that this review might not be very helpful to others because I can't manage to put my finger on what it is I didn't like about these CD - I just didn't. If you don't already know and love the individual material of all three of the artists, I suggest you try and listen to it before you buy it.

You have to at least appreciate Lone Ranger on radio to fully appreciate Ray Price. While I don't claim to be a long-standing fan, I recently saw the boys in concert and for what amounts to being an old guy, he still packs a whale of a voice. This is a production rife with odd pairings: English actor Daniel Day-Lewis joining up with the Mohawks; James Fenimore Cooper adapted by Michael Mann; disparate composers Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman teaming up. This last pairing seems a suspicious attempt to endow the score of this modern film adaptation of a junior high school literary evergreen with both a golden age of Hollywood dramatic bent (Jones) and a '90s-slick guitar-muzak veneer (Edelman). I listen to this soundtrack everytime I ride through the Appalachian Mountains and when I drive to Chimney Rock, (Why not listen to the soundtrack of the "..Mohican's" filmed location? -It really sets the mood.) The whole mood of the music fits in with the cinematography and timescape of the film. So many feelings are poured into the making of each composition, and mostly through tracks like "The Glade", "The Kiss", "The Courier", "Elk Hunt" and of course "Promentory", you'll feel passion, anxiety, intune with nature, and every possible feeling that deals with love and determination. I wish "Promentory" would have been as precise as the version on the film. I miss the bass strings and the part where Uncas dies and Alice chooses her fate. There's a steady tune of violin and symphonic bits that add to the on-coming climax. But all in all, I still enjoy listening to this album, and will for many years to come. And Clannad a remarkable impression on the film. On the VHS, you'll here a beautiful, dreary female voice sing the song "I will find you". To bad it is edited out of the U.S. DVD release.

Why is he writing reviews? Please Mr.McCulley stop. People this music was probably the first soundtrack, that made me sit up and listen and understand how much the music behind the movie actually drives the emotions that cannot be conveyed.
The music also can stand alone by itself. I cant name favorites. But this is one piece of art thats universally loved by everybody. Get it, you never will regret it.

This music is absorbing, mournful, rich, and moving. As a soundtrack it stands apart, perhaps because of the same "disparate pairing" and "strange amalgam" of composers so harshly critized in Amazon reviewer Jerry McCulley's blistering review. McCulley's opinion that the casting of Daniel Day-Lewis and Celtic music in a film about Native Americans is bizarre is irrelevant when it all works beautifully. Decide for yourself. Highly recommended.

When I watched the film and listened to the music I was struck by how well the music fit the film, and at the same time that the music was obviously so Celtic (confirmed by one of the tracks being performed by Clannad). I have pondered why the Celtic music of the film fits so perfectly with a 1992 film (done in 1930s style, i.e. no sex, bad language, etc.) from a story of early 19th century classic American literature. The reason the music works is that Celtic music is Western music of struggle, much as Russian music is. Having been oppressed by the English for hundreds of years, the Scots and the Irish had music that reflected their difficulties. The minor keys of the music in this film not only heighten the sense of passion between Hawkeye and Cora far more than any nude or sex scene could, but also the sense of doomed romance between them. The main them of the film successfully conveys the sense of epic scope of the story, as the film itself is one of the very best ever made, and certainly the triump of director Michael Mann's career.
Ignore Jerry McCulley's amazon.com review of the soundtrack. He obviously didn't understand the film, or the period of time and place that generated the story behind it. His lack of comprehension of the film translates into a lack of appreciation for the soundtrack.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

There's the crooning rock ballad "My Dearest Darling" and the elegantly symphonic "Sunday Kind of Love." Her classic, brokenhearted "All I Could Do Was Cry" follows the sweet title track and the bawdy blues stomper "I Just Want to Make Love to You." And there's a version of Harold Arlen's "Stormy Weather," which Lena Horne made famous. James's fine way with such a wide embrace of material wouldn't again be this well displayed on a single album until she was united with producer Jerry Wexler for 1977's Deep in the Night. --Ted Drozdowski

The R&B queen's classic collection is augmented this time around by a long-overdue digital remastering, plus a few bonus tracks, presumably for those who found the original album a little on the brief side. In addition to James's well-known hits, including "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "Stormy Weather," there are four additional songs: "My Heart Cries," "Spoonful," "It's a Crying Shame," and "If I Can't Have You." Repeating the feat that accompanied his directorial debut, Garden State, Zach Braff has again put together a tastefully assembled compilation of music. The track listing reads like a cherry-picked bouquet of refined American singer-songwriters (Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Rufus Wainwright, Ray Lamontagne), sprinkled with literate-yet-popular UK combos (Snow Patrol, Athlete, Turin Brakes) and the lone international megaband (Coldplay, already on Garden State). Based on the selection, Braff is the kind of guy who isn't afraid to show his sensitive side (that'd be the American songs, especially Apple's "Paper Bag" and Aimee Mann's "Today's the Day"), but who also likes to hang out at soft-rock clubs with his cool mates (that'd be the British songs, especially Snow Patrol's "Chocolate" and Turin Brakes' Simon & Garfunkel-like "Pain Killer"). Think Garden State soundtrack....if you loved that one - then you will love this. It actually feautures a lot of the same artists. I like this CD because it's an eclectic mix of bluesy, upbeat, downbeat somber songs.
It features Imogen Heap, Cary Brothers, Coldplay and more.
The music fits perfectly to the movie!
I like the cd because it exposes you to music you don't hear everyday- or sometimes ever...on the radio. It's an off the beaten path mix of songs that make you feel good.

Very good songs--mostly mellow. His first soundtrack of Garden State was much better, though. Some of these are already on the radio, where as the last album was more obscure songs. I really like the song Pain Killer. Overall, Braff picks cool songs. If you liked Garden State, then this will still be good, but just not quite as good.

Even taking into account inflation, it's ironic in this era of $250 concert tickets that critics harped when the Band charged $25 for their legendary November 1976 farewell show at San Francisco's Winterland. That price not only included Thanksgiving dinner, but also numerous guest superstars who'd influenced, worked with, and/or shared the Canadian roots of Robbie Robertson and crew. What transpired was a grand celebration of North American musical forms. As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write reviews and or speak about the music from the 60's and 70's.

"The Last Waltz" is more than a live record. It is a reminder of one of the finest (Although saddest) evenings in rock history. Robbie Robertson and the guys would no longer be found on the road. If they had to say goodbye lucky for us they would touch the earth when numerous friends helped to solidify the event as a tribute to great musicians and songwriters.

If you want to experience the mark "The Band" left in the musical universe look at the cast of characters that would share the stage during the epic event. They came from the blues world- Ronnie Hawkins and Muddy Waters, the blues-rock of Eric Clapton and Paul Butterfield were proud to be in the roll call, from the folk side long time friend Bob Dylan seemed so right playing with Robbie and the gang. There was Neil Diamond and many eyes wondered why, it is called mutual respect. Ask how "The Band" and Neil felt about each others ability. There was a guy named Ringo from Liverpool, he knew something about greatness and Neil Young perfect for the energy he brought and sincere appreciation for the sound of "The Band." Obviously I am leaving out a host of cohorts, only because of lack of room.

With the extraordinary bonus material this can't escape any fan of "The Band." If you heard it previously, it will be a new experience. If this is your first time hold on for the ride of your life.

"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Further On Up The Road", and "I Shall Be Released" are three of the many staples of this collection. You will be so engrossed with the playing and the song selection be prepared to miss a meal or two and not be on time to the next office meeting.

I was in Louisville, Kentucky not long ago for a lecture with Tom Constanten from the Grateful Dead, and the amazing rock photographer Don Aters. One of the fine local musicians Brigid Kaelin told me once a year an event is booked somewhere in Kentucky where the music of "The Last Waltz" is recreated. When we talk timeless and ceaseless it is not a cliché it is a rock and roll reality.

Let's go back in time and marvel at the sounds of the various men and women that made the rock nothing short of a diamond.

The Last Waltz is a controversial beast. As a rock documentary, it's an absolute classic, bringing to life the interviews of a diverse lineup of rock stars and depicting a marvelous one-night-stand concert in a very exciting way. As an event for The Band, it was a bit of an act--Robertson was the only one who wanted to quit, and the performance was especially forced for drummer Levon Helm, who didn't like the entire concept and found the film to be especially biased to Robertson's ego. For better or worse, though, here it is on CD in as complete a form as has ever been released (a few tracks are still missing and horns are overdubbed on a few as well, and the tracks aren't in their original order). The group is certainly not as on top of their game as they once were, since the road and drugs have taken their toll, but they give it their all and the star-studded guest appearances make for a once-in-a-lifetime event. This boxed set is the only way to experience this concert--it has the music that wasn't in the movie, it has the studio theatrical music, and it has the rehearsals that were (in some cases) better than the actual performances.

When the concert is good, it's great. Van Morrison's "Caravan" is a transcendent rock and roll moment, and The Band really cuts it up on some of their own material, like Rick Danko's classic "Stage Fright" vocal and The Band's final, barnstorming encore, "Don't Do It." A lot of great songs are on here that didn't make it to the movie either, like the group affair "Acadian Driftwood" with Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young's "Helpless," which sounds great with The Band's vocalists as backup singers. The rehearsals are great too, with "King Harvest" as a highlight (I still don't know why they're withholding the actual live version of this classic).

When The Last Waltz is mediocre, though, it's pretty mediocre. For instance, "Out of the Blue." With three amazing vocalists, Robbie Robertson's egotistical advancement of his own middling voice is pretty disappointing. A few of the takes are pretty middle of the road too, like the live "The Weight," and the rushed "W.S. Walcott's Medicine Show." Neil Diamond, though he performs his song with his usual grace (I admit it, I'm a fan) doesn't really belong with The Band on such an important night. Sorry Robbie.

Overall, The Last Waltz is a solid experience on CD, but it's definitely overshadowed by the truly essential film version of the concert which has great visuals and interview footage (not to mention a lot of close-ups of Robbie, thanks to Marty's infatuation with the guitarist). As a CD it doesn't capture the visual scope of the night and can't compare to the performing quality of Rock of Ages, the group's first and superior live album. If you're going to buy The Last Waltz on CD, though, this one has the most music and captures ALL of the best moments, where the other versions are even more heavily-edited and miss out on some of the greatness.

I enjoyed this album. I too anticipated it, and made sure that I had enough time and space (not in the car, not while I was doing something else) to listen to it. It starts well--the Donald Lawrence touch. I have become accustomed to the new studio sound that they have all been showcasing on their solo albums, and Donald catches this sound nicely. It really is not true to their live sound of many years ago, but I guess the Clark Sisters have changed with the times--in many ways. I really enjoyed the remakes--enjoyed singing along. As any tried and true fan, I had all the ad-libs and fillers down to the note. I like how the reggae beat on "World" is updated to a more contemporary reggae beat. But didn't anyone else have questions about the strange voice on "Instrument." I understand it may be Blanche from Tri-City, but why is she on here? And if she is going to be, why isn't she at least named as a guest vocalist to save me the trouble of figuring out which one of the sisters had lost it? Also, it seems that Twinkie was a bit hoarse. She wasn't soaring as she usually does with that crystal clear voice of hers. She deals well with it, but her hoarseness took away some of the "sangin' " that we are accustomed to hearing from the group. For that matter, Karen seemed to be hoding back too. Anyway, a good buy. If you're going to be a Clark Sisters connaiseur you need to get it.

They have to get a grammy for this. I understand why is been in the top CD's since it came out. My favovite is 'Livin'. It's one of the new tracks, and they are sangin for Lord! I enjoyed them doing the old songs too. I love "Blessed and Highly Favored" THe orginal cut i think was on Twinkie Solo CD. Between The clark sisters, and J. Moss they could put on a Jamin concert. That would be a blessed concert. If you a true fan of the music you will love this CD. They all look good and sound good, give them the Grammy please!

Have you ever had a CD that you where casually listening to all of a sudden stop you dead in your tracks? That is what this CD will do to you.

I was nonchalantly listening and then the song "Instrument" came on then everything stopped and up went the praise. And if that was not enough, the following song "You Heard Me Cry" just floored me.

The whole album is well put together with the old and the new. The sisters take turns taking the lead on specific songs which really accentuates how talented each sister really is. "One Last Time" (Live)should be a CD that you will play for years to come.

If you have never really listened to the Clark Sisters before I would advise you to listen to the samples and then order/buy it immediately. You'll be glad you did!

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

Turkey dinner and some of the greatest musicians of our time? Sign me up! This album/DVD is really really really good. I liked some of the band's stuff before, and I liked Dylan and Van Morrison, but this blew me away! This album would be good for people just getting into good music; it's kind of a "greatest hits" of Rock-n-roll history. This album got me into Dr. John and The Staple Singers, And my favorite tracks are probably Van Morrison doing Caravan, Dr, John's such a Night, And Ophelia. I would also recommend watching the DVD first, it makes the context of the cd fresher and better (I love seeing how over the top Dr. John was, And when Van the Man walks off the stage before Caravan is over. Clapton and Muddy Waters were really entertaining to watch too.)
Get this album! or I guess the box set, I hear this is harder to find now.

I'll start off with my review as so-so, There are some performers *cough*NeilDiamond*cough* that shouldnt have shown up but all-in-all, its an OK album.
It's nice to have a CD of the Concert with "most" of the songs at the concert in it, but What the heck happened to the Bass Guitar Channel? Its Missing! It's soo much more dramatic and exciting with the Bass than w/o the Bass.

I don't have this CD set, but i have the cassettes of the original release, and they are played so often that i might have to actually buy the discs.

Enough has been written about the event itself. Many people are critical of the concept of "farewell concerts," of a group of musicians getting "tired" of touring -- when that is their whole point of existence. Others are critical of the actual music itself, saying that the performance was luke-warm or even sloppy. If one can get past these criticisms, they might just enjoy something special.

I caught a showing of the film on TV in the Mid-90's and was hooked. Not only did the concert make me a fan of The Band, but also of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and Paul Butterfield. I may have been aware of most of the artists (who *hadn't* heard of Clapton by 1979 or later?), but had not really given their work much thought. Admittedly, i am STILL not a fan of Neil Diamond's, but his inclusion in the show was welcomed and stirring, and displays the talent of the Band as well as their appreciation for the music of others. They are real musicians; i am not. Each guest star came to the stage with a composition of their own - the Band took it, made it better without upstaging the artist, and turned it into a great live performance.

You can disagree with the motivation behind the show, or allude to its artificiality, but you can't argue with serendipity. This event was an important moment in 20th-Century music. Some of the best examples of recorded-live music are here, especially Van Morrison's Caravan, Joni Mitchell's Coyote, and the Band's own Up on Cripple Creek. Good stuff.

I like to think I was one of the first ever Metric fans. I saw them live in Toronto in August of 2001. At that time, they'd only played a handful of gigs and this is the album they were plugging (their first). Nobody knew who they were. After the show, I met them and got their autographs because I knew they'd become famous. Anyway, I became a member of their fanclub and they sent me a free CD with a lot of these songs on it. About a year later, they'd gotten a little more recognition and I bought the Static Anonymity EP from their new website which featured some more songs from this collection as well as a couple of songs not included here. This album never came out until now. I already have all of these songs. They originally come from that free CD they sent me in 2001 or the Static Anonymity EP from 2002. So I don't really need to buy this one, but I will anyway because I think it's the best way to close a chapter that was left unfinished for the longest time.

Does anyone remember the i-Zone? It was a little Polaroid camera that could print little messages on the instant photo. That was the gimmick, and quite unsurprisingly, it failed miserably. However, the North American television ads that accompanied this sure-fire failure contained a hidden gem. Floating in the background was a woman singing, "If this is the life, why does it feel so good to fly away?" The woman was Emily Haines, the band was Metric, and the song was a TV-friendly version of "Grow Up and Blow Away," the title track to their ill-fated debut album. Originally recorded in 2001 (or 1999, depending on your source), the album features Metric as a two-piece and was delayed again and again by their record label until it was finally shelved to make room for "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" Six years later, and the album is finally being dusted off. Is it worth the wait?

Absolutely! "Grow Up and Blow Away" is immediately captivating, thanks to the lead-off and title track. The lyrics are back in their original form, Emily singing "Why does it feel so good to die today?" One of the things that's instantly noticeable is that Metric as a two-piece is a much more toned-down affair. With just James and Emily, the songs are often just comprised of a drum machine and synthesizer. The result is a Metric that is just as awesome as their current incarnation, just less chaotic.

It's all still really cool music though. "Rock Me Now" features a funky musical accompaniment and finds Emily merely speaking throughout its playtime. It's actually James that does all the singing on the song, which is quite a shock to hear. At the same time, it's an undeniably cool song, making you feel like throwing on your MIB-shades and bobbing your head uncontrollably. "The Twist" is another great song that utilizes an almost hip-hop beat. In the chorus, when James and Emily are harmonizing with each other, it's absolutely beautiful. It makes me wish that more of this will happen on future Metric albums, though the actual chances of this are slim.

Though hints of their current new wave sound are apparent throughout the album, the majority of "Grow Up and Blow Away" feels much more like a straightforward pop album than anything else. "Raw Sugar," for example, has a Corrine Bailey Rae-esque musical accompaniment and features Emily singing "I don't want to die living in a high-rise grave" in a very soulful way. It's very un-Metric like, but at the same time, it's still a really great song. "White Gold" is another un-Metric song, sounding more like it could've been ripped off of Emily's solo album, "Knives Don't Have Your Back" if it weren't for the harmonies and non-minimal production.

In the end, "Grow Up and Blow Away" is an album that all Metric fans should definitely check out. Though it peaks at the very first song, you'd be a fool to stop listening there. Even in their early history as a band, Metric shows an uncanny ability to craft brilliantly infectious pop songs that will stick with you for weeks and weeks. Although the sound of the album has a definite early-2000s feel to it, most of these songs stand the test of time (unlike the i-Zone). It may have taken six years to hit the shelves, but "Grow Up and Blow Away" is well worth the wait.

Recommended for fans of Metric and anyone who still rocks the i-Zone like it's 1999!

This is not a new album by any means. This is the first album Metric ever made and it was largely underground until now that it has been redone and repackaged (with some extra songs thrown in to keep the fans happy).

Like many a hit indie band, Metric recorded songs before they hit it big with "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" In this case, it's "Grow Up and Blow Away" -- which despite its "early stuff" label has musical polish and maturity, and an enigmatic twist that keeps their sprightly jazz-flavoured pop fresh.

A child's voice says "Grow up, and blow away." That's the springboard to a tangle of sensual synth twists wrapped around some solid riffs and beats. Emily Haines murmurs a bittersweet song -- alcoholism, disillusionment, and having a child without regard of where it will be: "If this is the life/why does it feel/so good to die today?... nobody knows which street to take/he took the easy way/what was the easy way?"

Things get more uptempo with the jazzy-pop vibe of "Hardwire," all about "leaving behind the basement life," and apparently trying to start a band. Then Metric slips into a series of polished pop tunes: retro-flavoured beats, sexy noir tunes, delicate electronic tunes, sweeping piano balladry, and combos of all the above.

"Grow Up and Blow Away" has a tumultuous history -- the label diddled around with it, and then the band decided that fans wouldn't like it. So it took six to eight years to hear Metric's initial take on electropop, flavoured with different sounds that faded away in subsequent albums.

The most relevant sound is jazz, which is hardly surprising as Haines is the daughter of a jazz musician. They have the basic indiepop staples -- piano, solid drums and guitar, and Haines provides swirls, bubbles and wobbles of synth. But where their last album was laced with blazing rock'n'roll, Metric infuses their new album with a heavy jazz influence, with a little bit of funk.

And Haines herself sounds like a young girl who's seen too much real life -- her voice is high and sweet, but she sings enigmatic songs of disillusionment, tormented minds, and living in a "high rise grave." The happiest ones seems to be all about touring and travelling ("I should be living/Giving my mind a chance to rewind/And playback beautiful music...").

Metric has grown up but thankfully not blown away just yet, and their previously unreleased first album shows why. Striking, memorable, and beautifully polished.
