Album Description
Spanning the composer’s compositional career, these choruses lie at the heart of his art. Ranging from average performance difficulty to very difficult, they show off the performers’ art as well as the deep artistic message of the composer. In direct continuation and expansion of the madrigal tradition, the strong contrapuntal style mixes seamlessly with dramatic and cordal elements. From lyrically poetic to dramatic, from deeply felt religious expression to the mystical, they offer a picture of the artist’s life journey. Starting with the Madrigals, the question of death is explored from many heartfelt perspectives culminating with the affirmation of Divine Love. These choruses are wedded to the words, being direct expressions of the texts.

The poem Blow Winds is soaked in the natural imagery and sounds of the sea and shore. Where the poet Walt Whitman spent much of his time on the shores of Long Island in New York, the composer, spending much time on the shores of Cape Cod, a geologically similar terrain, found a natural kinship with the imagery of the poem. The poem raises the image of inexorable time and the loss of love, with deep pondering of death and its meaning. The individual choruses in this program continue the theme of confronting and solving the problem of death with the solution of divine love. The choruses "Out of Love" and "The Hour Love Was Killed" use the drama of the Passion of Christ to explore the album’s theme.

The album title, "And the Day After I Die" is taken from the title of one of the Madrigals. Written before the phrase "New Age" in its current use came into being, "Madrigals for a New Age" was meant as music for a new era of poetic expression, exploration and inspiration

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career,and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China,the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer,which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original,worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Outstanding Collection of Classical Music for Home.......2004-01-26

This is an outstanding collection of classical music for the home, regardless of age. We own two of the three CD's in this collection seperately, and they are excellent.

The "songs" were selected from excellent previously made recordings from the vast Phillips classical music catalog. The sound quality, selection and performances are excellent.

The songs selected are especially good for very young children. They are brilliant and pleasant, and they are not too loud or heavy. They are great for playing at home. Highly recommended!

I bought this somewhat based on the glowing reviews others had given it. It's not bad, but not that fantastic either. I've heard much better versions of most of the music on it. Not quite worth the price.

While the musical arrangements are tolerably adequate and the orchestra is fair, this is some of the worst choral singing I've ever heard. They obviously have no concept of tuning and couldn't stay on pitch if their lives depended on it. I can't believe this is supposed to be a professional recording and the director didn't correct these glaring errors. I picked up this CD at an after-Christmas sale at 75% off, and I will forever mourn the loss of my $5.00. I guess it might suffice as a mediocre white elephant gift, but I pity whomever may be forced to listen to it. I suggest you not waste your money. If it's classical Christmas carols you want, search for more well-known and trustworthy music groups like the London Philharmonic and the Cambridge Singers.

I have to agree with the other reviewers that this is a very enjoyable CD of traditional carols. It contains a huge selection of songs. I was afraid that they might all sound the same, but to me, the orchestration and vocals are varied and well done. I bought this for Christmas, and it's one of my favorite new Christmas CDs in recent memory.

The Holidays Never Sounded So Good!.......2005-12-17

I loved the "50 Most Loved Piano Classics," so I decided to try another "50 Most Loved" collection, this time the Christmas Carols album. These are classics in their own right as the arrangements and orchestrations are enchantingly beautiful and the choir vocals provide perfect point-counterpoint. I hate to admit this, but I'll probably still be listening to this CD long after Christmas is over. There's a cinematic soundtrack quality that I find haunting. Have a great holiday with this one!

I tried not to get my hopes up when I bought this box set, but was still disappointed by the quality of the piano CDs. They are definitely not played on a piano, most likely on a keyboard, so the pieces all sound very electronic. I did not enjoy the piano CDs for this reason, although the guitar CDs are of decent sound and have a wonderful variety of styles and composers. All in all, the entire collection is a pretty thorough overview of composers, with names popping up that aren't usually found in these popular classical music collections (i.e. Satie, Faure). I found that refreshing, but since I probably won't ever listen to the half of the collection that is piano, I'm not sure it was good buy.

this box set is great if ur a classical buff. but the only problem is many of the cd's have the same songs as the others. i got it mostly for the guitar songs, since i play guitar. the best of the four classical guitar cd's is the "Variations in Measure" this disk is amazing. the set has notorous tracks such as Greensleaves, lots beethoven(sonata a minor, Fur ELise) Malaguena, L'essence, Canon, Bouree, Ave Maria in diffrent versions, Scarborough Fair, and some bach. there are other many great titles. the set is rich with great timeless classical pieces...even a few hidden tracks....great to listen to while studying or if u get in a nice long trip or romantic dinner with a sweet girl. the quality of the recordings is great. and the piano classicals are also very indulging, they have a great classical piano selection. the whole set has 8 cd's a great buy, you can listen to all the cd's and still hear a song or two you may have overlooked.
