Shostakovich-Symphony No. 10

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Shostakovich's 10th Symphony is full of deep sorrow, disturbing meditations and gloom. The world of its artistic images wins the listeners by depth and docility of psychological implications and nuances.

Herbert von Karajan undoubtedly wished to be remembered as this century's great German conductor. He recorded the complete Beethoven symphonies four times, Brahms twice, Bruckner almost twice. But in truth, he was better at other things, and when he worked outside his standard repertory he usually did his best work--like here, for instance. Von Karajan actually recorded this symphony once before, a good performance. But when he returned to it for a digital retread, he simply let himself go and played the pants off the piece. This performance reveals his stature as an interpreter far more clearly than any number of Beethoven cycles, and fans of the composer should add it to their collections without delay. --David Hurwitz

3 out of 5 stars Recording is overrated.......2007-05-09

Many say this is the best Shosta 10 recorded. Quite frankly I would have to disagree. This was recorded back in 1982 during the early days of digital recordings. The sound in this recording is rather dry which really affects the performance. Personally I do not find the 2nd mvt very 'demonic' or 'aggressive' or any other evil adjectives you'd want to use. It didn't really impress me. However I must admit that the 3rd mvt here is one of the best around. Karajan judges the acceleration perfectly. As it has been said in many reviews, the finale is played at the speed Shostakovich himself indicated. It creates a slightly different effect than when you hear it at a slower speed, but if I'm not mistaken the timpani plays one too many DSCH mottos in it's solo at the very end. If you want a good quality recording in interpretation and sound get Haitink's recording coupled with the 2nd. The 2nd mvt of 10th is vividly captured and in your face and the tempo of the finale is only marginally slower than Karajan's.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good overall, but not absolutely best.......2005-02-23

Well spotted, John Grabowski! Indeed, the clarinet is a touch late in its second phrase in the 1st movement. Very sloppy for BPO under hyper-autocrat HVK!

The sound at the very opening of this symphony is very poor (lots of hiss included). But it gets over that quickly. Also, in tuttis the early digital sound is bad at times. So not an absolutely wonderful recording in all respects.

I would recommend Jansons on EMI for a recording which is brilliant in sound and interpretation (much prefer it over this).

4 out of 5 stars good recording of a great symphony.......2004-12-28

To my mind, the 10th is one of Shostakovich's greatest works, and one of the great symphonies of the 20th century. The Berliner and von Karajan do a fine job of bringing out the drama, and at time, rage of the work. The brass in the scherzo, for example, are angry and snarling; exactly what the movement needs. The string sound in the first movement is lush and gorgeous. You will not be disappointed by this performance.

5 out of 5 stars DSCH's Greatest Symphony.......2004-09-17

I am a newcomer to the world of Shostakovich, and this recording has definitely whetted my appetite for this great 20th-century composer. Under von Karajan's direction, the long, epic first movement unfolds a landscape of indescribable desolation and barrenness, with many passages that are positively chilling (eg. the clarinet melody). The scherzo and the waltz are appropriately demonic, and the final movement is as cathartic as one could desire - and with incredible virtuosity from the Berliners. Von Karajan show us why many experts consider the Tenth to be Shostakovich's greatest symhonic achievement.

One of the most thrilling musical experiences of my life was seeing Leonard Bernstein and the Chicago Symphony play Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony live. As Bernstein wrung every last ounce of pathos from the slow movement, I found it incredible that anyone could ever have thought this less than great music. The ending was so loud you could hardly even hear the cymbals! Happily, every bit of that experience--including the full dynamic range--has been captured on this recording, along with a terrific First Symphony. This is one of the great ones. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars A must have........2007-02-02

While I must admit that this is the only recording I've heard of Shosty's 7th symphony, I can't imagine a more impressive performance. Seriously, this might be the greatest brass playing ever...ever! I highly recommend this recording!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic Performance..........2007-02-02

Up until I heard the live performance of Berstein and the CSO playing the Shostakovich 7th, I had not been a fan of Bernstein, especially because of his NYPO recording of the Shostakovich 5. However, I was so completely taken aback by the live performance of the 7th, that as soon as I could, I purchased the CD set. The 7th is a seemingly overgrown work, too overt and cumbersome, (think of Bartok making fun of it in his Concerto for Orchestra) yet it delivers an emotional jolt that makes one want to stand up and cheer. This Berstein recording got me back onto his side in 1989. It is sad that he had so little time left, however.

5 out of 5 stars You Should Have Been There!.......2006-03-10

Yes, this "Leningrad" does indeed rate five stars, as most, if not all other writers here have given it. Despite some distortion in the louder passages, this recording certainly is a classic document. (I like Bernstein's 1962 recording on Columbia as well, but this simply has more impact.) One reviewer asked how the brass section did what they did. Having had the honor of being at this performance, I can tell you: the already world class regular section was augmented by extra players. If you think the finale is loud on the CD, you should have heard it when it was taking place!

I must correct one writer who said these performances were done in Medinah Temple in Chicago. They were both done in Orchestra Hall, Chicago, the First Symphony recorded without the audience, the Seventh done live. I was privileged to have been there. I'll never forget it!!

5 out of 5 stars Once and never more........2006-02-01

This is the only recording, as far as I know, Leonard Bernstein did with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a group of players with a very long tradition in the American music and with a great technical playing good enough to play quite all the repertoires.

Like in the case of his Mahler's 9 with Berlin, Bernstein only recording with this orchestra is a miracle that happens once and never more, because of many reasons, the first one because this is a live recording in the Medinah Temple and the emotions felt in this CD could not happen again.

I always thought Chicago is a very appropriate orchestra to play DSCH's music, because of the characteristics of the orchestra and of Shostakovich's music, very hard and very sensitive at the same time. One of the symphonies it's better to this couple DSCH & CSO is the 7th that it's not the most complex between DSCH's works, from the technical and musical point of view, but that demands a great and powerful orchestral response, something you can listen perfectly in this amazing recording, in which CSO gives his best, with a baton that understand very well the score, as far as he can... I think no one could understand completely the meaning of the Leningrad not being in the place of the siege or in the scenario described in the double-program of the symphony, probably linked to the oppression Stalin made with his politics to the pre-communist life of Saint Petersburg. I remember Goethe's words, when he said that reading a book is more complex than reading a book. Of course good Goethe talked about understanding a work, and Lenny, even not living that situation gives us a description of the fears, sadness, oppression, etc, really convincing from the very first bar.

Symphony Nº1 is a piece from DSCH's conservatoire years, from 1926, when the composer was only 19 years old and he was suffering a very disturbing economical situation, after his father's death and in the poor CCCP after the Revolution and the Civil War. It's known DSCH had to work in a cinema, under very hard conditions to eat, and that Glazunov took care of having some official assistance for his conservatoire pupil in order to Dimitri gave attention only to composer. The piece is not a great work like symphonies 5, 7, 8, 10, 13... but it shows some details and the personality of the maestro clearly. It was a great success from the same premiere and it made appear Shostakovich as the emergent figure of the new soviet composers, formed in the communist conservatoire... That was what the regime said, because in fact Leningrad conservatoire was mainly what it was before communist regime.

Leonard Bernstein performance of this symphony is a glory from all the points of view, perfectly played and recorded, the piece is fresh, full of tension and emotion, and even that parts not so fine orchestrated shine with real genius. The fourth and final movement is specially outstanding and the way the symphony ends is so good that sometimes I repeat the last minute when it finish. I really don't know any other version played with this very deep conviction on CD.

Seventh Symphony "Leningrad" is OUTSTANDING too, in every movement the orchestral playing and Lenny's conducting is breathtaking. The gigantic crescendo of the first movement is really a monument in the way Lenny control the dynamics perfectly, having an end that is really impossible to repeat, with the scales of the metals and drums full of terror, like watching the face of the death in front of you, in front of the city.

Central movements are wonderfully described too, the dynamics and the control of the tempo is amazing, as we listen in the second movement, a clear example of alternation between fortissimos and pianissimos, as between an atmosphere were everything is like suspended in fears and moments of pain.

The last movement is another Bernstein's `show', because of the way he proclaims the victory of the initial motif, which we could say is not completely affirmed in order to create that two-senses possibilities in the symphony reading. From the very dark beginning of the movement Lenny creates a crescendo that finally leads an explosion in the last bars, outstanding one more time.

The recording is fine, very present, full of body and not so clean like his recordings with Vienna in the 80's (I think about his DSCH's 6 & 9, for example), but it worth very, VERY, very much.

I could not say this is the only possible version, as I read in other reviews. I know about 5 or 6 performances (Rostropovich, Jansons, Haitink, Barshai...), apart from some others life, and of course this is the one I like much more, but not the only possibility, I try to discover always new ways in art, specially in music performances. Jansons' version in EMI is very good too, and we can not forget DSCH music always use to ask for the soviet performances, which are a very different way of understanding the works generally. Kondrashin or Rozhdestvensky shows another ways too.

Nowadays you can buy this 1st and 7th in this double top price CD or in a very interesting 6CDs box which contains Bernstein performances of DSCH's symphonies 6th and 9th with the Wiener Philharmoniker for not to be missed. That 6CDs box offers too his recordings of Stravinsky for DG. I have all of them and I think it worth too, but you remember the best thing in that box are DSCH's performances.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

4 out of 5 stars The only pairing of Bernstein and the CSO, in good performances.......2006-01-22

Bernstein was only 70 when he made this, his only recording with the Chicago Sym., but he was already debilitated and tired. Given his bad health, it's a wonder that these performances of the Shostakovich First and Seventh Sym. are as vital as they are. From anyone else, I would give the Seventh five stars. It is a galvanzing reading captured in great sound. But Bernstein's first Seventh, made in 1962 with the NY Phil., was a miracle of spontaneous, totally committed music-making. If you want maximum sonic impact, buy this CSO recording instead, but get it in the new bargain box from DG that contains all of Bernstein's later Stravinsky and Shostakovich recordings. The latest remastering is impeccable throughout.

Paying full price for this 2-CD set would hurt less if the Sym. #1 were better. I find it lacking in mood and color; it sounds very well played and nicely detailed but little more. When it was over I felt neutral, whereas the earlier NY Phil. version is quirky and digs in more. Again, the sonics are excellent, far better than before.

5 out of 5 stars uncomparable.......2007-02-14

The bravura, power, strenth, energy, virtuosity of the pianio in Khachaturian concerto is simply unbeliveble. Surprisingly to me, there are also moments full of poetry and nostalgia in second part.
And the orchesta with the Kusewicki - this is really strong support, and - despite the age of the recording - the details are quite well audible (I know Naxos edition, they made wonders!)
Simply amazing!
One of the greatest piano concerto recording I have ever heard (not the same with the concerto). Two great artists inspired to its heights by each other!
To comparision I know only another version of the piece - with Kapell again - the one with Ormady. The orchestra is not as marvelous as Boston.

5 out of 5 stars The Kachaturian Piano Concerto belongs to William Kapell!.......2004-10-27

Please do not waste your time and money searching another other performance of Kachaturian . This is by far , the supreme jewel in the musical universe since its first release in 1945 in vynil .
Kapell simply was far beyond of being inspired , he threw over the concert and literally explored every little detail , you will feel the anxiety , the nostalgia , the delirium , the caucasion moods , the unbetable rage and the most passionated lyricism ever made in this concert .
And despite Koussevitzky with The Boston Symphony makes a great team . This orchestra , gifted with such tonal color , his strings and brass ; cellos and counterbass , winds and metals were simply a real tour de force .
The rapport was inmediat and this recording became in the hitherto of the Kachaturian Piano Concerto .
Believe me I ve heard this work since 1973 and not least than three hundred times . Its frenetic intensity , its febrile majesty and vibrating erotism is absolutely overpowered .
The Prokoviev is very interesting though I find it too fast in the first movement and somehow this hyperkinetism may work out if you do not know for instance the Samson Francois version in which S.F. articulates lyricism and powerful .
But despite this last commentary about the Third , the record is fundamental for you to acquire the essential and more astonishing performance of this Concerto .

5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2004-06-05

William Kapell on this CD played with an incomparible fire. Both piano concertos are beautifull pieces and were fully realized on this album as great works of music.

Sensual Classics must have been a hit, particularly the cover photo of a man and woman undressing one another. For here we have Sensuous Classics II, complete with a book of eight more make-out photos sprawled over 10 foldout panels. There are no liner notes (no room, I guess). Again, the selections are absurd and the performance standard uneven. From the first note, Lawrence Foster's performance with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo of Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 goes limp, if you'll pardon the expression. By contrast, Heitor Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 with soprano Arlene Auger and the cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic is bold and sensuous and memorable. --Gwendolyn Freed

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars good selection -- not bad performances.......2002-10-03

I agree with the previous reviewers that these are well selected pieces, at least if the standard is potentially to set the mood for romance. I have listened to this album a number of times and find the performances quite adequate -- I disagree that the perforamnces are bad. The roster of who is performing the pieces is not a lot of folks generally considered to be slouches. If these are bad performances, I think a lot of people would have trouble recognizing good performances.

The one thing I find really disappointing about this album is its price, which I find very high for a compilation album. For bettervalue, I would suggest looking for some of the many "adagio" albums that Polygram puts out that have 2 well-filled CDs with very nice selections of generally quiet, relaxing, romantic music (a good one is "Evening Adagios").

Better yet, buy some albums on the Naxos label... that have some of the pieces on any of these compilations and listen to all of the pieces on each CD. You'll get good value for your money and hear a lot of very good music too!

2 out of 5 stars Good selection, poor performance........1999-08-23

I picked up this CD because it seemed to be a great selection of my favorite romantic classical tunes. I found the performances to be poor overall, however I was indeed pleased with the selection.

This CD might be considered a bargain if you are looking for performances from most of the all-time favorites. But for quality performances, look elsewhere.

        Album Description

Shostakovich wrote his First Symphony as a graduation exercise at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Its premiere in 1926 under Nikolai Malko was a popular and critical success and it is still regarded as one of the most mature "first symphonies" ever composed.

The Symphony No. 3 is one of Shostakovich's works with an overtly political program. The choral finale is on a text by Semyon Kirsanov relating the May Day story, with lines like "Every May Day is a step towards Socialism!"

excellent overview of contemporaneous classic music.

Should be continued, plenty more 20th-century composers to be discovered.

5 out of 5 stars For the price you can't lose.......2007-02-21

This 2 cd set consists of, as the title indicates, various 20c pieces or movements from the Naxos catalog. Sound quality is uniformly high, although for some such as Stockhausen's it's not clear if that's good or bad. What is excellent is the variety of the collection--some familiar (Debussy), others not, some pretty, others intentionally weird. Few will find every piece to his or her taste, but many listeners who do not spend much time on 20c music will find something to like. Overall, a great introduction to a period of much off-putting, yes, but also much compelling music.

        5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection .......2005-12-17

This is an excellent sampling of the music of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, displaying a wide range of emotion, from the enthusiasm of the first selection, the Festive Overture, to the soaring lyrical beauty of the Romance (track 5), to the poetry of the andante movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2 (track 9), to the slow, deep, intensity of the Largo movement of the Piano Trio No. 2 (track 13), very movingly performed by the Stockholm Arts Trio.

At the same time that the various musical selections exhibit Shostakovich's range and diversity, they are nonetheless arranged in such a way that the listener doesn't experience any unpleasant impact from the sudden change in tempo that occurs, for example, when the Romance in track 5 ends, and the very next selection is the highly energetic allegro movement from the Symphony No. 10. Rather, the feeling is one of stimulation and excitement as one moves, from one selection to the next, through the wonderful variety of Shostakovich's compositions.

The quality of the musicianship on every track is first rate, including the selections played by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and its talented conductor, Theodore Kuchar. The andante movemont of the Piano Concerto No. 2 is a slice of musical heaven, played wonderfully by pianist Michael Houston and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. There is power, intensity, tenderness, subtlety, and great beauty in the wonderful performances on this very reasonably priced CD. The sound engineering is also first rate, with crystal clear sound and excellent balance of the instruments. For those who want to hear a greater number of selections from this composer, Naxos has now released the two-CD "The Very Best of Shostakovitch."

Amongst the "Best of" or "Greatest Hits of" classical music CD's that I have, this is one of the best. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Traditional & Modern, Russian & Global........2003-03-21

This CD opens a door for me to explore the huge music treasure of Shostakovich. I love every piece of music on this CD. "The Gadfly" film score suit is especially beautiful and performed by first-class musicians in National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. There is too little, this is the only problem with this CD to me.

        5 out of 5 stars !.......2000-07-13

Pursuant to the previous review: Since there is now a listing supplied, I guess that the disc should now be considered a five star masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful recording of great music.......1998-09-10

First of all: the music of Shostakovich is beautiful. The second movement of the pianoconcerto is one of the most moving pieces of music I know, leaving you with an intense feeling of sadness and hope. The opus 118a which is the great 8th string quartet rewritten for string orchestra, is beautiful as well. Again, sadness and hope at the end. Shostakovich always ends his works at the first light after a very cold and dark night. Second: the performance on this record is close and direct. Great record to start your Shostakovich collection.
