Absolutely worth gushing about.......2007-01-06
The sound quality is top-notch and the pieces are truly magnificent. Muti shrouds the music in a robust clarity with a tempo that feels neither rushed nor languid. This rendition of Tchaikovsky's 4th was the first Tchaikovsky symphony I had ever listened to, and as soon as I heard it I became spellbound despite the fact that others had warned me to start with some of his more famous works. As particular as I am about my music, there are honestly no complaints I can offer regarding this fabulous, lushly played recording.
Terrific performances.......2003-11-16
At this price, this is a must have for any Tchaikovsky or Scriabin admirers.
These are among the best recordings of "The Philadelphia Sound.
Especially, "Prometheus", the magic symphony of Scriabin is very impressive, in some passages very whirling, contemplative or ecstatic. As you know, Scored for large ensemble: quadruple woodwinds, 8 horns, 5 trumpets, 3 trombones and tuba, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, gong, 2 glockenspiels, large 5 bells, 2 harp, celesta, strings, piano, organ and "Luce" (light organ). So, during the all work, the light organ shows 12 colours equals to 12-note or keys (in one scale) in organ to all concert hall. And some colours mean that: Green - Matter, Yellow - Joy, Creativity - Bright Blue, Human - Red etc... There is an anecdote about the first performance in U.S.A.: in 1950's, Leopold Stokowski was conducted this work with The Philadelphia Orchestra (!). And in a passage of work, the light organ was showed "Red" colour and this was be very long, so, a woman spectator was dead because of heart disease!
As you know, Scriabin was started a new work: Mysterium! But, unfortunately, he couldn't finish this work (he was dead because of a lip tumor!!). And he was written a new part for: perfume for to spread to all concert hall...
In other words: Highly recommended.
WOW! Just speechless...........2002-12-18
I don't know what to say. The brass section in this recording is just ungodly amazing. The trumpets project, the horns have the most resonant and in-tune sound you'll find, and the low brass just gives it to you. When Tchaikovsky's 4th is done, you'll just be craving for more. Muti does an astounding job with this symphony because there is never a dull moment. If you're a brass player or just loves brass like Muti does, then this recording is definately for you.

Not completely pleased.......2007-01-10
The cd I ordered arrived on time and I was pleased with that. However, it was a gift for a friend, and when I opened the outside packaging, I found that the cd case was badly cracked. Indeed, it looked as if the case was cracked when it was packaged. I did not have enough time to return it as I was giving it as a gift and there wasn't enough time to get a replacement. As it turned out,the cd inside the case was fine, but it was disappointing that because of the cracked case it looked to be second hand.
CSO great, Solti - NOT a Tchaikovsky man.......2006-05-25
I too agree that this CSO/ Solti collaboration is questionable.
Since the introduction of the 33 1/3 rpm record, I have owned many Tchaikovsky 4th recordings starting with finest ever recorded(currently, not available in the USA????? by BMG Japanese Victor ),the Munch / Boston Symphony collaboration of 1957. This performance and the recording itself blows the highly coveted benchmark, the Monteux/BSO of 1958(now avail. here on XRCD-Japanese Victor), out of the proverbial water, as well. Both of those recordings used the same orchestra, same hall(on Huntington Ave in Boston),were recorded one year apart from one another, and used the same "Living Stereo" equipment. The only difference was the conductor. More about the "conductor" later. Also, the Gergiev, Muti, and Bernstein as well as the Tilson-Thomas, recordings are, in total, superior to the CSO/Solti.
Yes, the CSO brass has no equal, and that is the singular saving grace of this recording.
First, the earlier reviewer is correct, the tempos are ragged, very unlike Chicago, but, this is not the fault of the orchestra and their abilities. It is Solti who is the problem.....he is NOT a Russian interpreter......... Mahler, Brahms, Beethoven, etc. certainly....and, among the best, as well, but not Tchaikovsky. His tempo's in the first movement cause the orchestra to have ragged staccato passages. This is because his rubato is so severe that it is difficult to follow (in fact, there is little rubato written). In the 4th movement, frankly, the tempo is rediculous, the earlier reviewer is correct. The tempo is marked "Allegro con Fuoco"...translated...fast with fire. This means dynamism, passion and intensity. It is not marked Presto,Prestissimo nor is it marked Vivace. The Chicago Symphony, possibly, the finest orchestra this country has ever produced, (along with Szell's Cleveland, Philadelphia, N.Y.Phil, Boston, et.al,), almost falls apart in it's inability to negotiate the 4th movement at such rediculously break-neck speeds. Herseth("the grrrreat")and his forces can do anything and manage to save the day. Also, in the tutti passages, the horn section harkens back to the days of Philip Farkas and Reiner, but even the vaunted Chicago trombones fall apart during an running 1/8th note passage!!!!!
One final thing, Solti's vocalized grunting and groaning on this recording is unforgiveable. The engineers should have figured out a way to avoid the problems with the michrophone placement. It reminds one of the Toscannini recording on RCA of "La Boheme" where the conductor hums along with every note....rediculous!!
Very Exciting Tchaikovsky Fourth with Great Sound Quality!.......2006-04-10
I was a bit baffled to read the customer review here which said the orchestra sounds ragged, and the sound inferior, which leads him to recommend Barenboim's recording instead. The Solti recording is easily one of the most exciting recordings out there, with extremely powerfull brass and very polished, precise, and fervent orchestral playing throughout. The first movement climaxes are shattering in their intensity, the scherzo is playful and colorful, while the finale offers some of the most heart-stopping excitement you'll ever hear in music. Tempos are very well judged all around. (Only the second movement is a bit too slow, but this is a minor complaint, since it sounds very good anyway). The recorded sound is truly of demonstration quality, every detail is clear and sharp, and the brass sounds like it's being played in your room!
Barenboim's recording is a huge failure when compared with Solti's: the brass sounds weak and muffled, the tempos are almost always off (i.e. too fast or too slow), and the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. The only truly superior performance of this work is the Mravinsky/Leningrad on a DG 2-CD set. But the set is sold at full price and the analog sound quality is good, but not great. The highly-praised Jansons recoding on Chandos costs almost twice as much as the Solti and comes with nothing else on the CD; besides, the Oslo Philharmonic is neither as polished nor as powerful as the Chicago Symphony. Therefore, Solti's recording is easily recommendable as a first choice, especially if price is a factor (and even if it isn't). Add in a very dramatic and incisive recording of the Romeo and Juliet Overture and you have a CD that you should not hesitate to buy.
OK, though not great........2002-12-31
Solti/CSO recordings are usually pretty great, but this one is a little disappointing. Not only does the orchestra sound a little ragged at times, but Solti's tempo choices also could have been better. The finale, for example, is taken at such a break-neck speed that it flies by without a lot of the subleties noticed. The recorded sound itself is nothing special, either. I think the newer (and live) Barenboim/Chicago recording is better: richer recorded sound, fantastic playing, and smarter phrasing/tempo decisions.
Great recording........2000-03-19
Both the Fourth Symphony and Romeo and Juliet are everything you've come to expect from the Chicago Symphony and Solti. Awesome virtuosity at a bargain price. Can't go wrong with this disc.

One of the most controversial recordings in history.......2004-08-28
This is the famous Stokowski-American Symphony Orchestra recording of Tchaikovsky's great "fate" symphony that has been derided by critics worldwide since it came out in 1970. The old wizard uses every extramusical affect available -- tenuto, ritardando, score rewriting and embellishment -- to make one of the most memorable (and some say perverse) translations of this great music in history.
Right from the beginning, Stoki rewrites the score, bringing the trombones in four measures before Tchaikovksy ordered it. His use of tenuto in the opening movement is maddeningly common, a trait other eccentrics like Harnoncourt use in modern recordings. He continues this trend throughout the first movement.
Stokowski's "stop and go" tactics, as American Record Guide called them in their Tchaikovsky overview, are not to everyone's taste. But there is no question about the commitment to the music by both the conductor and the American Symphony Orchestra players, who bring an electric charge to the music uncommon even in this ultraromantic score.
Stoki uses all the same approach in the finale, picking up the pace to racehorse speed early, slowing it down, stopping the music before galavanting to conclusion. It is such a bizarre experience that even the Stokowski Web site calls the performance "overinterpreted" and suggests listeners go to the Japan performance available on Arts and Music.
I don't know about that. I bought the Vanguard Cardinal record when it was new in 1970, right after reading about it in Martin Bookspan's book where he called it self-indulgent and "near the very top of my own list of recorded horrors." Personally, I have always found this performance refreshing, very much a new and different look at familiar music.
To me, this recording speaks in a way most mainstream versions do not. I've owned a lot of recordings of this music including many of the critically acclaimed versions. I found Szell and Janssons play it well but eviscerate Tchaikovsky's gigantic emotions. Most critics like Karajan's way in this music. His famous twofer splits the symphony over two CDs. Ditto the famous mono set on DG (Sanderling).
I like Bernstein's first (1958) recording a lot and have returned to it over and over for pleasure and musical understanding. His later DG recording with New York Philharmonic is too slow to generate the kind of emotions necessary in this music.
Emotionally, this recording is in a class of its own, one that's not pleased and often confounded critics. The 1998 Penguin Guide to Low-Priced ecordings had lots of bad things to say about it. "Only the Scherzo is comparatively free from interference, whereas the end of the finale is grotesque."
Still, they qualified that in the next sentence saying, "The amazing thing is that, through tall these excesses, Stokowski carried the orchestra with him and at the same time maintains the tension at a higher pitch than almost any other recorded performance."
So there you have it. I find myself buying this recording every five years or so just to get an idea of where this music can go, then selling it when I tire of Stoki's antics. When it becomes available again I'm sure I will do that same. If you want to hear something in this music you've never heard before, do that same.

Marvellous Taneyev.......2000-09-29
This is only a review of the Taneyev piece, as I assume people can find the Tchaikovsky elsewhere...
"St. John of Damascus" was Taneyev's 1st publicly performed piece, but already it reveals much of his distinctive, but obviously Russian, style - particularly in the extensive use of counterpoint in the 3rd movement. The 3rd movement is a little laboured - Taneyev's melodic gift here doesn't quite measure up to his facility with counterpoint - but the gently textured 1st movement contains music of rare beauty, and on this basis I can heartily recommend this otherwise unavailable piece.
