Good cd , in a matter of technical interest about how a SACD would sound like, but i think it lacks quality in the music collection itself (artists,songs).

Vocals & Instruments are so clear that if you close your eyes you think that your listening to the actual performer LIVE. A must have CD for Hometheater Enthusist, surround buff or just loves Multi-channel Music, cant get better than this!!!!!!!! Highly Recomendable!!!!!!!

Without a doubt, this is the quisessential SACD for all SACD lovers. The sound on this disc is mindblowing and the warmth and clarity of the recording is flawless in all aspects. The discrete 5.1 surround mixing is done very tastefully and it's almost like being right there in the recording studio with all the instruments/vocals surrounding you in sheer bliss. All tracks on this SACD are brilliant and I think Ken did a great job in picking these selections from the magnificient Telarc/Heads Up SACD range. What's more, Ken gives you detailed info on the surround recording of each track telling you which instrument goes into which channel and the highlights to look out for in each track too. Check out the track from Ladysmith black mamboza, and also the spyro gyra and yellowjackets tracks. To sum it up, this is the only SACD you'll ever need if you want to show off your 5.1 surround SACD system. Well done sound & vision!

I am by no standards an expert on music, let alone organ music. I just purchased this CD because I love the sound of the organ, and wanted an album from a mix of artists before I started branching out to single composers. I would also consider myself an audiophile, only listening to high quality music with my portable headphone amplifier and Sennheiser HD-555's. Let me tell you, the quality is perfect, and the music is incredible! Such a full sound, it's *almost* as good as sitting in audience, only lacking the full body experience of organ music. I would recommend this to anybody looking to get a foot into the world of organ music.

I happen to love organ music, even that tacky Saint-Saens
Third Symphony (with which this CD ends and just the third movement).

I grew up with E. Power Biggs, Virgil Fox, et al. and had never heard of Michael Murray (okay, it's been a while). I bought this delightful CD when it first appeared and before Amazon had been invented.

Upon hearing that most famous work with which Murray begins, I confess I was just this side of hysterical -- I was laughing with pure happiness. Murray's take on is it wonderfully over-the-top in the best possible sense. I have a son-in-law who is a musician and, indeed, does play the organ (i.e., if any of them have had pipes, I don't know, but I'm here to tell you, I don't want to hear ANY but pipe organs -- okay, I'm old).

At any rate, to hear this Toccata and Fugue played with such (carefully studied) abandon so tickled me, I called Brian (the son-in-law) and demanded that he listen while I put it on my stereo.

Now I'm going to send it to my son Bruce upon learning last night that he LOVES organ music. Who knew? He's 54 years old, for goodness' sake and never mentioned that little item before.

4 out of 5 stars For those who like BIG organ works.......2005-09-04

This CD concentrates on the big, showy organ pieces that organists love to play. As an organist myself, I find that such numbers are usually more fun to play than to hear. Fortunately, this CD is very listenable, and makes the case for both playing and listening to these works. I'd buy it again; maybe more telling, I'm looking for some of the music, so I can go play it!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Majestic Power!.......2003-07-20

Corey is right - this is an outstanding organ CD, one of the best I've heard. Murray plays some of the largest and most powerful organs on Earth, and uses the reed stops more than the usual organist to produce great effects and a wall of sound that are majestic in the extreme. The selections are all great virtuoso showpieces, and track #6 by Messiaen (Dieu parmi nous from La Nativite') is especially demonstrative of the great contrasts available in a large organ. The horizontal trumpets in this piece are predominant and very bright, contrasting with the snarling bass of the pedal organ.

A word of caution - this CD requires a capable stereo (think subwoofer) to sound its best. Trust me - if you listen to this CD on a good stereo and if you like organ music, you'll sit there with a big grin on your face and tears in your eyes as you listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance by Murray.......2001-11-09

This is by far one of the best organ CD's I have ever listened to. The variety is very good overall. From the state trumpets at St. John's to the mighty organ of First Congregational Church, Murray provides nice registration on all of the organs sampled. The Finale from Saint-Saens No. 3 is awesome with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy,s direction. Murray provides his own notes on the organs and the pieces in the booklet that is included. This is some fine organ music!!

The Absolute Sound has been a premiere audiophile rag for decades. If you are one, you already know them. If not, then there is only a small chance their magazine will be useful to you. They have another publication for home theatre, "Perfect Vision" which has far broader appeal these days. SACD is the format for this disk. Many of them are pressed in "hybrid" for use on conventional CD players. SACD is a significant improvement on the CD, which initially promised "perfect sound forever".

Telarc is a particularly high quality label that supports SACD. They have a fine list of recordings that extends far beyond these chestnuts.

To appreciate this improvement you need to have a SACD player. So the best use of this disk is to bring it with you to different audio stores to audition their equipment. Over time it functions as a reference disk, or benchmark, as you compare different sound systems.

Because it has only bleeding hunks of well known classical music, it has little other value unless you are interested in classical music but have little experience of it. In that case it may serve as a sampler to lead you to buy complete recordings of these selections. But again you need the SACD player, which you may already have if you are a jazz or rock audiophile. Otherwise, pass it by.

      4 out of 5 stars First of many Telarc Samplers a winner.......2006-12-30

      This initial offering in the TELARC SAMPLER series presents top shelf orchestras and performers. Excerpts of some of the very best 17th through 20th Century classical works are here, as well as an opening and closing track that are quite modern. The disc begins with John Williams conducting his "Superman" movie theme, and it ends curiously with a pop recording: Papa Doo Run Run's unnecessary and inferior remake of Good Vibrations. Points off for this.

      TELARC'S audio quality is always impressive, as this mid-80s release so clearly demonstrates. From full orchesta to single instrument, from andante to allegretto, this album simply sounds great! If you like variety in your classical music TELARC SAMPLER 1 was made for you.

      This jewel of an album is my pick for the best way to test your sound system. I've had this album in my collection for years and whenever someone talks jive about their system this one goes in. The superman theme demands to be played at 11 and everything is worthy of praise all the way through to good vibrations. I will admit that I have a health sense of nostalgia for this cd, but I recommend this cd as a diamond in the ruff. Sounds great and gets the ladies.

        This is the 5th in a series of various artists albums that Telarc released in the mid-80s.

        As usual, the selections are diverse and the performers skilled. In this collection we hear everything from requiems to electronic Beethoven to a sea shanty and showtunes-- all in the space of an hour. This interesting and eclectic mix is unfortunately followed up by eight minutes of explosions, cannons and gunfire. This is the supposed "plus" that Telarc advertised in the disc's name, "Sampler Five Plus."

        Tracks 21 thru 38 (the ordinance offerings) come with a warning that playing these recordings could potentially damage your stereo's speakers; the user is also advised not to wear headphones for them -- two more reasons to wonder why they've been included at all. My advice is listen to the excellent music on Telarc Sampler, Vol. 5, and skip the fireworks altogether.
