Customer Reviews:
masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This compilation features excerpts from some of the greatest sacred works in the literature--including Bach's Mass in B Minor, Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Missa solemnis, and Verdi's Requiem--all led by Robert Shaw. The selections, from recordings made between 1983 and 1997 by Shaw and various ensembles including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, are presented more or less in order of their composition, from Vivaldi's Gloria to Arvo Pärt's Magnificat. Especially thrilling is the complete "Gloria" from the Missa solemnis, 17 minutes of sheer grandeur, and the Sanctus movements from the Requiems of Verdi and Maurice Duruflé. --Ted Libbey

It is absolutely breath-takingly beautiful........2007-05-15
I enjoyed this CD very much. It is just beautiful music.
Robert Shaw Choruses At Their Best!.......2004-09-20
If Sir Robert were still alive, & breathing, I believe he would be caught-up making music with this awesome, majestic, mystical GLORIA, Sanctus, Hallelujah Masterworks! I lucked-up on this old collection in the few classical CD'S in Best Buy!
At first hearing they sent me back into the 1970's when most of Church Musicians majored in Vivaldi's Gloria, the Sanctus of Bach's B-Minor Mass, the Long, georgeous GLORIA, Missa Solemnis, Beethoven, and incomparable Alleluia by Randall Thompson.
During a visit of Hurricane IVAN'S rushing winds and torrents of rain, I stayed on back roads of Decatur and East Atlanta! Also keeping alert & relaxed listening to Robert Shaw re-inventing his Choral Mystique! In slowly moving traffic of 2++ hours to Fayetteville, I kept alert singing along at 30 mph, wrapped in his quiet heavenly beauty of Koplov's "Heavenly Light!"
That mysteriously spiritual power of glorious choruses provided the same resourceful sounds of his eternal music-making from rehearsals in the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, Westminster Choir College and Avery Fischer Hall concerts in NYC! (1975-1985)
Only the early 33 1/3 recordings of the Robert Shaw Chorale in his Spirituals and Irish Songs, later Handel's Messiah and Bach B-Minor Mass were forerunners to his awesome listing of repeated Grammy winners, now printed in digital stereo color and sound! Hooray for Sir Robert and his rich chorale legacy... Let's keep them singing for Eternity! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
Glorious.......2000-06-30
If I had to choose one conductor to compile exerpts from the greatest masses and works in choral literature and history, I would only bestow that duty to Robert Shaw and his choruses. Once again he displays his uncanny ability to not only choose beautiful music but also perform it in a spellbinding manner. Even with the pieces the average listener has heard or performed, such as Vivaldi's Gloria or portions of Handel's Messiah, one cannot help but become enthralled with the recordings of Shaw's interpretations of those works. Although Shaw never followed through on his early-life ambition to be a minister, I still believe he does so and perhaps to a greater extent through his music ministry. One cannot help but feel closer to understanding what heaven is about after having finished listening to this CD. This is well worth buying for it will live up to the english interpretation of its Latin title: Glorious.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful and varied compilation of Sacred Choral Works.......2001-08-13
This is a 2 CD set and is one of my favorites. While this CD contains several pieces that the general public probably hears often (Handel's Messiah, Bach's Jesu Bleibet mein freund) it also contains some not well known pieces. Of particular quality is the recording of Gregorio Allegri's MISERE MEI DEUS, a piece composed at the end of the Renaissance era. This piece, lasting roughly 13 minutes, is a master stroke of pure choral music. The piece is repetitive but Allegri builds up to a fantastic ending. Also of note is the glorious recording of Mozart's AVE VERUM CORPUS, Hadyn's DIE SCHOPFUNG, and Brahm's EIN DEUTCHES REQUIEM. A MUST for any choral music fan.

This certainly is a desirable compendium of some of the most famous large-scale choral pieces, primarily drawn from Deutsche Grammophon's catalog of operas and oratorios. Among the 30 selections on this two-disc set are choruses from Carmen, Lohengrin, Aida, Madame Butterfly, and Il Trovatore, as well as Messiah, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Bach's St. Matthew's Passion, and Verdi's Requiem. --David Vernier

Dies Irae-The Essential Choral Collection Review.......2007-07-07
This 2 disc collection of Choral music is a great introduction to classical music. Many of these selections have been made famous in movies and will be recognizable to even the most casual listener. I bought this album for O Fortuna by Carl Orff, a song that is featured in Excalibur and Jackass: The Movie. The music on these CDs is great. I especially like Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven, Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg, and Requiem by Mozart.

The Greatest Choral Masterpieces.......2005-10-02
This collection is outstanding, featuring the best choral works from operas and oratorios in classical repertoire. It begins with the fiery and intense Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem. This piece is sublimely performed by the Berlin forces. It's followed by the anthem-like Va Pensiero from Verdi's early opera Nabucco, as conducted by Sinopoli and sounds maravelous. A brief excerpt from Beethoven's Ninth "The Ode to Joy" is a treat. The Coronation Anthem from Zadok The Priest by Handel is well-executed and powerful. The famous Bridal March (better known as "Here Comes The Bride") from Wagner's opera Lohengrin is sumptuous. A lot of this music is grandiose, and all the famous grand choruse from the grand operas like Aida (The Triumphal March scene) and the Inquistion Scene from Don Carlo. What is missing however, and I would have enjoyed, is the wondrous Finale to Wagner's Die Meistersanger which features a great chorus in praise of art. My favorite piece on here is the little known Mass of Saint Cecilia by Charles Gounod. It is absolutely gorgeous and epic sounding. The underrated but great conductor Igor Markevitch conducts. The famous O Fortuna from Orff's Carmina Burana is also on here, not to mention Handel's "Hallelujah" chorus from Messiah and other pieces from Judas Maccabeus. This is a great collection of chorus masterpieces that any fan would appreciate or if you are studying to sing in chorues yourself.
Not that bad... at first.......2005-03-26
There's plenty of free samples to this CD, and I agree that this is a great collection of music. Chances are you won't find a collection of songs, all of them with angelic choirs, as great as this. When I got it I was quite happy with it, but when I heard the same songs done with different conductors I thought to myself: 'Hey, why doesn't it sound like my CD?' It's the quality that I don't like. For example, Dias Irae is a great song, and it sounds pretty good on the CD, but compare it to another version and this one is slower, the chorus is off key, and it doesn't have that intense emotion. Same thing with O Fortuna, it's a great song, but the chorus is just terrible on this CD, the instruments are lacking in emotion: percussion doesn't add that extra 'oomph' to the bass drum, the cymbals don't have enough emphasis, the chorus sounds like they're about to go asleep, and the dynamics between fortissimo and pianissimo have little effort.
I'd recomend this if you have little cash to blow on a lot of good songs, otherwise you might want to search for a bunch of seperate CDs with the same songs.
Gread Idea, Great Performance.......2003-03-03
This CD should move people in a way that few other recordings can. The one word to describe many of the works is "exalted". This is not music for dinner parties but instead should be heard in solitary contemplation of all the great artists and their efforts in creating such an inspiring recording.
Dies Irae.......2000-03-07
I have an extensive CD collection, but since purchasing this CD, it has become my very favorite. This music sent chills down my spine. I felt transported to a different world....What amazing voices! I intend to give this cd as xmas presents to family and friends.

A Worthy Hymn.......2005-09-29
I got this CD as a gift and I have to say, seeing "Andrea Bocelli" in my iTunes is a strange feeling, but this album does what it is supposed to do, and I really liked the whole thing. Commissioned for Pope John Paul II, who came to Paris in August 1997 to celebrate an open air mass as a part of the International Day of Youth, this is a collection of sacred music from Baroque to the modern era. The progression is roughly chronological, but the flow of moods and styles works great. The chorus of Santa Cecilia National Academy is totally on, the orchestra, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, enthusiastically joins in, and the two soloists are a strange pair, but they both put in a great performance.
The opening choral movement from Vivaldi's Gloria is fast- not as furiously fast as Rinaldo Alessandrini's take on Gloria, but really fast and energetic. Then Cecilia Bartoli comes in and serves up a killer Domine Deus from the same Gloria- beautiful, just beautiful! No tricks, just glorious singing and great oboe obligato to boot. Then you get nicely done Jesus bleibet meine Freude by Bach and some Mozart: moving Ave Verum, and ecstatic Alleluia from Exsultate, jubilate, sung by supercharged Cecilia. Another Ave Verum and Qui seminant by List and a well done Sanctus from Verdi's Requiem, plus Rossini and Vitali round up Phase One of this album, and set the stage for piece de résistance: Bizet's Agnus Dei, sung by - Andrea Bocelli.
I have no strong feelings about Bocelli, his attempts to sing opera or his crazed fandom which apparently felt this CD was a rip off because it didn't have enough of Divine Andrea singing and wasn't sexy enough- ??? - and all I can say is: he is very good in this piece, closely miked, straight up and quite moving. And, followed by Panis Angelicus, sung by Truly Divine Cecilia- she is too good! Beautiful singing, bordering on ravishing. I had no idea that she could sing a simple piece, without any aspirated heeheehoohoo coloratura, and sound so great.
Serene In Paradisum from Faure's Requiem, a piece by Messiaen and a Rite Of Peace prayer, read by Pope John Paul II, end the album.
The sound is not so great, and it is a live recording, so there are a few rough spots, but it's a very surprising delight, 100% sacred- JPII says so!- and well worth getting your hands on. And if you need more: there is a happy sequel, too, Hymn for the World II and Bryn Terfel joins the ranks of singers.
A Timeline of God-Inspired Masterworks.......2003-11-08
Yes, Andrea Bocelli and Cecilia Bartoli, the tenor and mezzo of the moment, are used sparingly on this CD. Their popularity is rather shamelessly used to promote this music, and their voices aren't much heard.
I don't care! I like the disc's concept: A timeline of spiritually inspired masterworks moving roughly from earliest to latest. "A Hymn to the World" opens appropriately enough with Vivaldi's jubilant ornate Glorias. It passes out of the Baroque period into the Classical for Bach's famous "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." Next comes the Romantic Period, represented by a pair of Liszt compositions. This is followed by the work of composers whose fame rests on opera but are capable of much more: a slice of Verdi's renowned "Requiem" (Mass for the dead) and Rossini's touching "Stabat Mater" (scene of Mary at Christ's cross).
The grandeur of a Gounod march and the tunefulness of Bizet's "Agnus Dei" come next, the latter featuring the warm buttery voice of Bocelli. And Bartoli wraps her famous mezzo around another liturgical piece, the plaintive "Panis Angelicus." Both are highlights, but the disc does not need famous voices to shine.
It closes by whisking us into the 20th century. The final portion of Faure's Requiem, called "In Paradisium," unfolds with all its warm layered lushness. This sampling lead me to the entire Faure Requiem, now one of my favorite works. I must say it's even better to build to "In Paradisium" than hear it in isolation, since it resolves the tension and brightens the darkness of the preceding sections. Its sweetness, I think, has to be earned! Faure himself called his composition a "lullaby of death." Finally, there is Messiaen's "O Sacrum Convivium" which depicts sacred experience as a nu-Gregorian gang vocal in clear simple plainsong. It concludes the journey far from the Baroque flourishes of where it began.
It's a journey worth taking, an excellent tour for the person new to classical and/or sacred music and a solid addition to the collection of the regular classical listener.
Great music for a beautiful event.......2001-11-15
Enjoy this beautiful music performed by wonderful
musicians at an extraordinary event. Per liner notes,
"the visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to
Paris in August 1997, to celebrate an open-air Mass
as part of the Worldwide Days of Youth." You can put
yourself there while listening to these selections
that celebrate life. A surprise benediction touched
me.
It's music, not Hollywood.......2000-10-27
Ok everyone... Get over it, Bocelli and Bartoli only sing 4 of 16 selections. Is it just me, or has everyone lost their mind when trying to review this album!? This is absolutely beautiful music written by brilliant composers and performed extremely well by very well-accomplished musicians. Those of you who feel robbed by the lack of feature soloists obviously haven't experienced the pure joy and ecstacy a good chorale piece can bring because you've automatically closed your minds to the no-names who perform in this album. They are all wonderful musicians, and as such they deserve an enormous amount of credit. Take it from me, these people don't practice a half hour a day. If anyone has experienced life in a conservatory or music school, you'd know these people are practicing upwards of 4-5 hours a day. It makes me sick that people can no longer appreciate the purity of music as it has always been and still is today. Obviously they don't perform with absolute perfection (no one ever has... even Horowitz), but Chung did a fabulous job getting an absolutely gorgeous sound out of the choir which isn't exactly an easy task! Overall, very good album. As a final note: if you must, throw away the CD case documentation to get the picture of Bocelli, Chung, and Bartoli out of your mind. Just sit back and enjoy the clarity of tone and fabulous musicality of the entire album. Allow yourselves to fall in love with the music. Without that passion, there is no way any performer would have made it in the world, and you wouldn't be able to listen to such beautiful music.
Sorry, this is not for me........2000-08-04
I don't even want to get THIS! Sexy Andrea Bocelli only has ONE song on the whole CD: Georges Bizet's "Agnus Dei."
My recommendation: Get any of Andrea Bocelli's SOLO recordings, like "Romanza," "Verdi," etc. But NOT THIS, please.....

This sampler, which appeared in 1997, features Robert Shaw, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and its associated choruses in selections from some of the choral-orchestral blockbusters they recorded for Telarc between 1979 and 1993, in consistently excellent sound. Shaw's unrivalled mastery of this repertory shines through in every selection on the disc, not least in the excerpts that frame the program: the final pages of the "Prologue in Heaven" from Boito's Mefistofele, and the towering conclusion of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, both magnificently done. Just one warning: after listening to this, you're likely to find yourself hurrying back to buy the recordings of the complete works. --Ted Libbey

One Who Loved Sir Robert; eager to see him again .......2006-06-30
If anyone goes back into that memory of nostalgia...It is easy to create good reminders of seeing, hearing and singing with Sir Robert Conducting JS Bach, Berlioz, Brahms, Mozart, Poulenc, Schubert and Vivaldi!
When anyone hears once again Donna Carter, Edith Wiens, Judith Blegen, Susan Dunn, Christine Brewer, Dawn Upshaw and William Stone it is a totally unforgetable Moment! Upon more keenly intense listening I found similarities in the voices of Edith Wiens...Judith Blegen and Donna Carter. In fact, I can exchange the songs of Donna, Edith and Judith without being sure of which is the right soprano. That is almost equal to the voice of Susan Dunn! The last two Sopranos, Christine Brewer and Dawn Upshaw are different qualities with a bit more variety of color and depth! Shaw had a masterful taste in choosing the right soprano for each demand and challenge!
When one dwells upon Shaw Favorites with CD's of "Deep River & other SPIRITUALS, Christmas with Robert Shaw, surely, CHORAL MASTERPIECES and Johannes Brahms GERMAN REQUIEM...what else is THERE?
No other Choral Inflence has been seen greater than upon Donald Neuen, Craig Jessop or Norman MacKenzie! SING-Cerely, "Revi" Fred W Hood
I may be musically challanged but...........2002-10-23
This is one of those recordings that would have a hole worn in it from overuse if CD's were capable of getting holes from being used. This is the most used CD in my entire collection. I love it! It picks me up when I am down and it quiets me when I am high. It send shivers down my spine and sets my heart pounding. In short, it does everything a good CD is supposed to do. I don't want to listen to an hour of the same piece. I am entirely content listening to the highlights. As I said before, I may be musically challanged, but this CD is my favorite.
Good selection of pieces, uniformly flat performances.......2000-07-27
This is a collection of choral selection from previous Telarc recordings featuring the Robert Shaw Chorale and the Atlanta Symphony. Recording dates range from 1979 to 1993.
It's a great cross-sampling of (mostly) Romantic-era choral pieces, the choral singing is as usual impeccable, and it's a great group of soloists.
As these excerpts are from some of my very favorite pieces of music, I kept wondering why I wasn't more enthusiastic about this compilation.
Part of the problem is hearing the music in excerpts (a movement here, an aria there) is pretty frustrating. Entering smack in the middle of the last movement of Mahler 8, it can take you a while to get your musical bearings.
I'm also not wild about most of the interpretations, many of which struck me as kind of flat and uninspired (the Verdi Requiem and the Mahler 8 stick out in my mind). Suffice to say I didn't learn anything new about any of the pieces on the album, and in every case there is a recording of the work I like much better. (Except the Cavalleria rusticana excerpt, which I really liked, go figure.)
Bottom line: if you're not familiar with these works, and want a good (and very well-performed) cross-section of Romantic choral pieces, give it a listen. But then do yourself a favor and buy complete and more inspired versions of the pieces you really like.
Standard Shaw.......2000-05-29
Like all of Shaw's recordings, this one is once again up to standards. A great assortment of selections from the religous works of many artists.
