    1 out of 5 stars Lacks Voltage!!!.......2004-09-16

Just when you wonder about the Naxos logic of releasing the Mozart symphonies along with Schubert 9 we are given a lacklustre performance of Beethoven 3 and an entirely passionateless performance of one of Sibelius greatest works...added to this is the sonority of sound which comes from a cheap microphone set up in a an acoustic such as Rebecca Cohn and you really have the makings of a very poor recording.

Generally the Eroica lacks momentum...the sweep of the triadic melody of movement 1 one sounds disjointed and underplayed...the colour of the winds and strings does not blend so well. Intonation is rather suspect at times towards the finale and scherzo...articulation is not uniform in the fast 16ths in the finale.

Generally speaking one of the very worst in this set and sadly not entirely representative of a fine conductor.

This chamber like sound is unsuited to this epic music!!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Sibelius Seventh, Very Fine Eroica.......2004-09-13

The Eroica Symphony was a new departure in symphonies, a symphony on a scale never known before. It still is an astonishing work and there have been many fine recordings of it.

Georg Tintner and Symphony Nova Scotia did a very committed chamber orchestra performance, very well thought out. As I have pointed out, Tintner makes the most of the musical accents and phrasing, which keeps the performances lively and interesting. My favorite part of the Eroica is the second movement funeral march, especially the mighty fugue, which Tintner builds with inexorable logic to its stirring climax in the upper strings. I never think that I would rather be listening to something else: it's that good. I like a big orchestra for the Eroica. My favorites have been Ansermet, Schmidt-Isserstedt and Leibowitz, and I still probably would listen to them more often, but Symphony Nova Scotia's performance is very good. The 1988 recording is very good, and one can hear every note.

Even so, I was not prepared for the Sibelius Symphony No. 7. First off, the sound quality is superb. The 1999 recording is of demonstration quality, a true audiophile recording. It has a wonderful wide stereo image, very clear and with excellent ambience and depth.

Add to that, the performance is simply gripping, right up there with the famous London recording with Lorin Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and even better recorded. The Tintner is a somewhat closer recording with a smaller orchestra, but it is equally dramatic and equally well played and thought out. It holds my interest from beginning to end. Maazel's later Sony recording with the Pittsburgh Symphony is beatifully recorded, but much slower and not nearly as exciting. I compared Symphony Nova Scotia's recording with some others as well: Beecham, Gibson, Colin Davis. These all tend toward a lyrical, less dramatic interpretation, often quite lovely but not as exciting. On the whole, I'll take Maazel and Tintner over the others.

Symphony Nova Scotia's recording of Sibelius' Seventh is right up there with the best there are.
