Kalinnikov. Symphony #1; Rimsky-Korsakov. Overtures and orchestral pieces from operas "Maid of Pskov" and "The Nobelwomen Vera Sheloga"
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Kalinnikov was poor and sick with tuberculosis. During his life, his name was known well only among members of his family. You may see, that nothing has changed in the music industry in a hundred years - the dead composers are much more welcome than alive!

Excellent First, but there are better Seconds.......2007-05-22
Of Vassily Kalinnikov's two symphonies, the first is the most often played. It is easy to see why: it has the sort of folksy accessibility that pot-boilers are made of, and it skids merrily from one tutti to the next. The second, much like Elgar's, is a more inward-looking affair (although much less than Elgar's) - still the same catchy rhythms but without the First Symphony's explosiveness. While Kuchar and his Ukranians attack the First head-on, they do appear to be less at home in its successor, where Järvi's Chandos recording still sets the standard. The First Symphony, however, is played excellently, and this is probably the most energetic recording of it to date. Excellent work from the orchestra, particularly the brass and woodwinds.
wonderful.......2007-01-15
I bought this CD on impulse and I'm so glad I did. These 2 symphonies are well worth getting to know. If you like Borodin you will definitely want to hear these. I was worried at first they might be dull late romantic period pieces but Kalinnikov has a light touch that makes these symphonies riveting throughout.
Very good and almost unknown Russian music.......2006-12-03
The canon of Russian Romantic classical music is so large that it is almost impossible for one person to listen to it all. But trying sure has its rewards, and this is one of them. I found this CD by browsing thru lists of Russian composers, and listened to it on a whim. I am glad I did. These two symphonies are probably the only two works by Kalinnikov that is available online, and they show a musical genuis. Both works are wonderful symphonies encompassing various moods, melodies, and harmonies. Both extend upon the Internationalist tradition begun by Tchaikovsky and are quite enjoyable to listen to. I highly recommend it.
Neglected Masterpieces.......2004-02-12
It's too bad there is such a thing as the "standard repertoire," since many splendid works never seem to make it and fall into unjust neglect. Such is the case with the two marvelous symphonies of Kalinnikov, which are rarely heard in the concert hall. They are similar in style to Tchaikovsky with repetitive themes, rich string scoring, and beautiful melodies, but they have a lyrical sweetness and life-affirming vitality of their own that are remarkable considering the chronic illness and short, tragic life of the composeer.
Kuchar's performances are a little rough-edged and the sound is a little diffuse in the climaxes, but the spirit and style come through and at the Naxos price, this CD is a wonderful bargain. For anyone who has suffered through chronic pain, illness, or tragedy, Kalinnikov's music is a wonderful reminder that joy and beauty can still be found in the valley of the shadow of death.
More Than Worth the Money.......2000-06-15
It's entirely possible that the Jarvi performance is better, but for the money, you can't get much better than this. The sound quality is fairly good-- perhaps what you might get if you transferred a high-quality recording onto CD. The National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine certainly played well, and was probably the best choice for Kalinnikov's symphonies.
Kalinnikov's symphonies are full of Russian sounds, as much as those of any Russian composer I can think of. The scherzo in the first symphony in particular is reminiscent of a Russian peasant dance. Kalinnikov may not be the best Russian composer, but this is still a darn good CD.

Brilliant, beautiful, and touching compositions..........2005-06-18
...perhaps it's just a phase, but as time goes on, I'm becoming more enamored of all the Russian composers. These two symphonies from a little-known man who faced great difficulties and hardships in life are rich testimony to the victory of mind over matter, an inspiration to anyone struggling to gain access to a well-hidden talent.
Upon listening, it is hard for me to imagine that Kalinnikov suffered from poverty and poor health. Great brightness, joy, and power are available in his two symphonies. To my mind they display great coherence and craftsmanship, which you may appreciate in the restatement of themes, tying each work together as a well-integrated whole. Some may think his compositions conservative, but art is, of course, in the ear of the beholder. There is abundant evidence of the master at work here. The real power of these compositions is the delicate balance between the great musical activity and the deep silence of the composer's mind. Only from a calm, quiet, creative mind could work like this have come.
The 2nd movement of the first symphony is delicate, tender, and powerful at the same time-and extremely touching.
I have heard the 1st work performed with more punch by a Russian orchestra. But this performance is smooth, sweet, and powerful, a fitting tribute to a man who undoubtedly had a very rich inner life. Kalinnikov's work deserves to be in the repertoir.
Good reading except..........2003-03-19
Second and third movements of Symphony #1 are wonderful - no complaints. My complaints are with the outer movements.
In the first movement, Jarvi does not subscribe to all the dynamic markings in the score, making the reading less interesting than it could have been if the composer's intent was followed more often.
The last movement of Symphony #1 is the most disappointing as it is played ludicrously fast, stripping away its impact, detail and majesty in the coda. Being a violinist currently playing this piece in my orchestra, I am familiar with the great moments in this last movement. I can't hear many of these listening to Jarvi's break-neck flurry. It does not provide sufficient resolution to document Kalinnikmov's notable effort.
I have no review for Symphony #2 to offer.
Fast Paced and Bright, It May Be Too Much for Some.......1999-06-24
Vasily Serge's life is another example of an incredibly talented artist's being taken before his/her full bloom. Based upon the few works he left, one can only guess as to what greatness he might have arisen to.
I have the separate CD's of the two symphonies which are the basis for this release. I found that the performances seem to emphasize the brass section of the orchestra which gives the recordings a rather bright tone that can cause listener fatigue under certain situations. The tempo of the second symphony is quite quick especialy the last movement marked Allegro vivo.
Personally I prefer the interpretations of these two symphonies by The Symphony Orchestra of Russia conducted by Veronika Dudarova. Performed at a more moderate tempo and with a warmer tone, this recording has a more sonicly pleasing presentation to these ears.
Regardless of the orchestra, listening to these symphonies will cause one to grieve about Kalinnikov's short life. Perhaps had he lived his name would be up with those of the great Russian composers. One can only guess.
Wonderful, Exciting works. Why the compilation?.......1999-05-31
Vasily Sergeyevich Kalinnikov (1866-1901) was on his way of becoming among the biggest force in late Russian Romantic music. However, obtacles stood in his way during his life & career. He grew up in poverty during his youth and although he wanted to enroll as a student at the Moscow Conservatory, he could not afford it. Piotr Illyich Tchaikovsky, who sympathized with Vasily, recommeded him to a conducting position @ the Opera Theater in Moscow. Vasily was abled to achieve an education and thereafter began to compose in earnest, completing two symphonies, three orchestral scores, piano, chamber, vocal works as well as an incidential work to the play "Tsar Boris." However, Kalinnikov began to be affected by Tuberculosis, which compelled him to retire to Crimea. He never fully recovered and passed on two days before his 35th birthday. By the time of his death, Kalinnikov was an overlooked figure & his works were ignored even by the publishers. It was Sergei Rachmaninov who was instrumental in having Kalinnikov's works published, by his own publisher.
The First symphony of 1895 earned Kalinnikov a longlasting reputation, despite problems in getting the work premiered (the insecured Rimsky-Korsakov had low regards of the symphony & the original score was temporarily lost). The symphony, which reminds me of Balakirev's First symphony, is remarkably fresh, energetic, & inspiring, with wondering Andante commodamente & Scherzo movements. It has a passion of Tchaikovsky with the idiom close to the Russian Five (again with Balakirev the main impetus to the ideas of the work).
The Second symphony of 1897 is no less appealing than its predecessor, with Tchaikovsky & Borodin being the main impetus of this work. The work rid itself the drama existing in the first movement of the First symphony. Instead, festivity dominates the first & last movements, with the middle movements highly affective & optimistic. The symphony is endearing & mature and conductors such as Svetlanov, Kuchar, Kondrashin, Dudarova, and Jarvi were right to not place this work on the back seat despite the popularity of the First Symphony.
Thus far, the performances of Neemi Jarvi and the Scottish National Orchestra of these works are the best on currently available recordings. The performances were done with upmost passion, commitment, total refinement & discipline. The recording is very atmospheric & radiant.
My only problem is that Chandos chose to complied the symphonies onto one disc. Why not keep the recordings of the works the same, with one disc having Kalinnikov's First Symphony accompanied with Glazunov's "The Sea" and "Spring" and the other disc having Kalinnikov's Second Symphony accompanied with his overture to Tsar Boris & "The Cedar and the Palm."? Also the cover for this disc is not attractive with the music notes rather sketchy. More importantly, however, the works of Glazunov on the disc having Kalinnikov's First symphony, are remarkably inspiring and descriptive while the other works of Kalinnikov on the other disc are exciting and poetic.
My suggestion. Avoid buying this compact disc with the compilations. For more exciting, inspiring, compelling, vivid music, go for the two compact discs having the works listed in the previous paragraph.
Go for substance, not the glitter. The music is the substance. The compilations, with omit the other works & not re-issued elsewhere, is the glitter. Be wise.

Customer Reviews:
Great Recordings.......2002-09-18
I heard part of The Seasons played over the radio and knew, at once, I had to have the recording. Unfortunately, it is hard to come by. The Seasons by Glazunov has such energy in the performance and is played so well by the Leningrad Philharmonic that it would be hard to find a better one. The one problem is the dated sound. The Kalinnikov Second Symphony dates to 1953 and the Glazunov to 1969. The ear adjusts to the sound in the Kalinnikov somewhat but the sound is remarkably antiquated. The Glazunov is better recorded but is dry. Both works are so superbly played that it is a shame not to have them, so if you don't mind the sound buy it.
