This two-CD set, offering Schumann's groundbreaking Piano Quintet, the Piano Quartet, and the three piano trios, is an exceptional bargain. The approach of the Beaux Arts players and their associates is essentially reflective: they let the music speak for itself and avoid the rhetorical excesses other interpreters often fall victim to. In their hands the quintet, one of Schumann's most inspired creations, receives an especially polished and poised performance, with a lovely dovetailing of voices. The analog recordings are warm and detailed, and they have been optimally transferred to CD. --Ted Libbey

now i'm just a big dummy. i really am. but somehow classical music got through my thick skull and into my heart. so glad that it did. these recordings from 1975 by the beaux arts trio are spectacular works of chamber music. mr schumann's compositions are given a vibrantly intense and dramatic going over by these great musicians. soul-stirring stuff in every way. this is the sound of a musical springtime, all green invention and sunshine for the spirit. the violin, cello, and piano tunnel through the music, unearthing and displaying its potential and grace. i listened to the entire two hours and twenty minutes of glorious music that's on these discs this morning, and it was a great experience indeed. i highly highly recommend this set to any and all music lovers. this whole affair is a masterpiece of grand compositions in the hands of brilliant performers.

5 out of 5 stars A linkage between the past and the modernism!.......2006-11-28

If Goethe's Werther was the prototype of the Romantic hero per excellence, inflaming the imagination and creativeness of newcomer artists, I guess the legitimate Ambassador in the music, had its embodiment around the egregious figure of Robert Schumann. No other composer in the history of the music has embraced new genres and styles with as much febrile intensity, uncertainty but at the same time with as much determination as did Schumann. The remarkable fact he had composed 138 songs in just one year, supports with striking stubbornness he blended music and poetry; despite of the fact his enormous knowledge of literature. Of course the main pivot for his incursions in the chamber music were his passionate analysis around Beethoven's late Quartets. His immense devotion for the chamber music was in visible counter flow with the tendencies of the New German School. He was aware about the dissolution of the piano as protagonist instrument ( just think in Busoni `s Piano concerto, for instance) and in this sense he consecrated all his efforts to preserve and defend the power of expression of the noblest instrument.

On the other hand, the set of Trios surmounted the well known Op. 54's Piano Concerto. That reveals a very careful design in the tonal architecture, interlinking parts and polyphonal material which points to the future and Brahms securely had to have discussed this issue with his friend.
Such emblematic attitude made that composers such Mahler and Schoenberg were so influenced due its modernist projections.

The second is by far, the most romantic of the set with Schubertian reminiscences try to realize th far echoes of the last movement of Cesar Franck's Sonata for violin in the third movement of this trio, while the last one is evidently as we expected the most futurist of the three; and you certainly may find seminal seeds for modern age and the Viennese school of the early ages of the XX Century.

So, consider a wise acquisition to have these distinguished and refined Trios because reflect fundamental works that far to be transitional were the most perfect linkage between the dying Romanticism and the arousing musical modernism and illustrates wisely that smart statement of Octavio Paz: "The past is function of the future. The will of future makes the dead bodies stand and puts order in its works..."

5 out of 5 stars great deal.......2005-10-12

These are well-played and well-recorded versions of these pieces. The price is also right.
Personally I found Schumann's compositions excessively mercurial at times but that's my problem. If you like him this should'nt be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performances, superb value.......2002-04-07

This collection of Schumann's piano trios, Op. 47 piano quartet, and Op. 44 piano quintet is excellent, epsecially since it's offered at Philips' Duo (2-for-1 price). Having recently performed the piano quartet and quintet, I can say that the Beaux Arts Trio brings much finesse, refinement, and superb musical judgment to these performances. The famous Quintet gets an oustanding performance, not as volatile as the live EMI recording led by Martha Argerich, but then without that recording's self-indulgence either. I think the piano quartet is underrated; it has a absolutely beautiful slow movement and an exhilarating last movement filled with counterpoint. The Beaux Arts gives it an excellent performance, though the slow movement seems rather too ponderous and lacking the radiance it should have. The piano trios aren't as well known: they come from later in Schumann's career and are often considered inferior to the earlier works. I cannot agree, especially in the case of the first two trios, which cotrast beautifully, the first one passionate and tragic, the second one lighter and fresher, almost Schubertian, both with beautiful slow movements. The snag is that the first trio is split between the two discs, which is an inconvenience. Very good sound, too. By the way, if you enjoy the trios, you should also check out the Florestan Trio's two outstanding discs on Hyperion (one with the first two trios, the other with the Piano Quartet, the third trio, and the Op. 88 Fantasiestücke for piano trio). The Florestan's performances are perhaps more imaginative than the Beaux Arts', and they are even better recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for chamber musik freaks! This is Schumann's best........1999-10-09

This 2 CD set offers an extraoardinary bargain. Five works by the underrated German master are heard in incisive performances that only occaisionally succumb to the usual pitfall of many Schumann performances: Zu Viel Schmaltz. When Robert indulged in self-pity, he bathed in it! (especially when he was "Eusebius").... The sound overall is consistent and adequate, although some selections are remastered from analog. Many people have said, "Why couldn't Schumann write a truly great symphony?" He did---the Eb Quintett, op. 44. If you love romantic period chambermusic, you should not miss this collection. This is more than two hours of great music...

5 out of 5 stars A Gramophone winner brings love to two of Schumann's step-children.......2006-06-19

Before the Florestan Trio took up Schumann's first two piano trios in 1999, this was neglected music that rarely appeared either on recordings or the concert stage. Although both trios date from the fertile year of 1847, well before Schumann's mental instability ruined his music, they never seemed the equal of his inspired Piano Quartet and Quintet.

Nobody would claim today that they rise to that level, but by giving these trios an impassioned performance, the Florestan made them shine brighter than most music-lovers ever thought they could. the outer movement of both works seem to me the best, along iwth the hesitaiton waltz in the third movement of the second trio. One wishes that the piano parts were more interesting, given Schumann's stature as a piano composer. Don't expect Schumann at his highest energy or romantic fervor--both works are gentler than that. But they are enjoyable in their low-key way, a real addition to the Schumann repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have. Essential. .......2004-09-29

Robert Schumann was arguably the quintessential romantic. His romanticism was not mawkish sentimentalism but dwelt in the same heroic realms as Keats, Shelley, Goethe, and Holderlin. The trios on this disk were written during the most creative period of his short life, following upon his marriage to Clara. The striking thing about Schumann's work, and on this disk especially, is the total openness with which he lays bare his psyche. There is no posturing, no self-indulgence, no self-pitying; there is just a very earnest sincerity to express the core of his being. Listening to this music you begin to sense the enormous sensitivity of this man, and the incredible honesty and dignity he possessed. Florestan delivers a flawless performance with just the right amount of romantic sentiment as would be proper for this early period of German romanticism. Sound quality, as always on Hyperion, is first-rate. This is essential music if you collect classical.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2002-05-30

Schumann's later chamber works are often put down as being somehow less inspired than, say, his early piano music and the chamber works of 1842 (the great Quintet in particular). Listening to these performances, you wonder why. The two trios, written within a relatively short amount of time from each other, make for an interesting comparison: the first (in D minor) is darker, more tragic, whereas the second one (in F major) is altogether brighter and more outgoing. Both have exceptionally beautiful slow movements, though for me the closing movement of the second Trio doesn't come close to the corresponding movement in the first Trio, which I think is one of the most thrilling things in the entire chamber-music repertoire. However, the second Trio does make up for this with some beautiful interplay between the string instruments in the first movement, plus a very original third movement--in place of the Scherzo Schumann wrote a gentle barcarolle that is filled with counterpoint, a fascinating example of Schumann's love of counterpoint.

I'm very thankful to the Florestan Trio's recording of these works, because I think they show what an outstanding recording can do to make us re-evaluate the merits of previously underappreciated works. They certainly did that for me. They combine technical polish with much imagination in their playing. They are totally committed and sound genuinely in love with these works, which is never to be taken for granted in this repertoire. Special honors to Susan Tomes for her exceptionally sensitive piano playing and her keen ear for balance. The recording itself is demonstration quality.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this CD very much.......1999-06-28

This CD was recommended by GRAMOPHONE magazine and I think Florestan Trio deserves it fully. Excellent performances of Schumann's two Piano Trios. Very life like, well balanced and natural recording is a bonus.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked Schumann in relaxed, genial readings.......2006-06-19

A group called the Florestan Trio surprised the classical music world in 1999 by making a prize-winning recording of Schumann's first two piano trios. Both works had been relegated to the shelf as second-rate, but with the right, totally committed performance, they can be brought off. Here at bargain price we get readings from the Vienna Brahms Trio that aren't dashing and incisive like the Florestan's, but they are genial and assured enough to make this neglected music appealing.

Both trios date from 1847, before the composer's tragic decline; Trio No. 3 Op. 110, being from the late phase, is a consideralby feebler work. Schumann doesn't find great melodic inspiration here, and both trios are lower-key than his great Piano Quartet and Quintet. I like the outer movements of the first trio very much, along with the hesitation waltz third movement of the second trio. The finale of the second trio has the piano and strings chasing each other, typical of the opening to the quintet, but again not as inspired.

In all, this is a nice way to hear Schumann in his gentler romantic vein at a modest price.

5 out of 5 stars I love to encounter recordings of such high quality.......2003-05-16

This is difficult music to pull off (I speak from experience, being an amateur violinist). The ensemble of this trio, the phrasing, and the really great intonation, combined with the quality of the recording make this CD a pleasure.

This isn't really familiar Schumann, but it's worth augmenting your Schumann quintet and quartet music with these trios. (and if you don't have the qu-'s, you need to get them!)

        5 out of 5 stars A Fine Performance.......2001-11-16

The Vienna Brahms Trio play this beautiful chamber music of Schumann with great feeling. Both trios were written in the same year, 1847. But the Op.63 in D minor is a study in contrasts with the Op.80 in F major. The former has a melancholy feel to it, whereas the latter is a more sunny work. But both trios are rich with great romantic changes typical of Schumann. The recording is very good. I recommend this CD warmly, and at a bargain price.

3 out of 5 stars Engaging performances, but the pieces are weak.......2006-06-19

For a great composer, Schumann has only a few works that rank as masterpieces among his chamber music output, principally the Piano Quartet and Quintet. Here, in their second CD of Schumann's Piano Trios, we get assured, relaxed readings from the Vienna Brahms Trio. But the main work here, Trio No. 3 Op. 110, dates from Schumann's drastic mental and physical decline. The first movement has moderate energy and a lovely theme, yet it doesn't develop with the power of imagination that early-to-middle period Schumann has. After that, things go downhill quickly. The slow movement is simple, centered around an almost-memorable melody, but the Scherzo is feeble and the finale downright weird--I defy anyone to figure out what Schumann intended.

Likewise, the Fantasiestucke are average works at best, nowhere near Schumann's inspired line of fantasy in his piano music, and the six Pieces in canonic form Op. 56, though not part of the composer's decline, are a bit academic, pleasant at best. I love Schumann, but these works didn't strike me as worth more than one listen.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Chamber Music by Schumann.......2001-11-16

The Vienna Brahms Trio pick up where they left off, after recording Schumann's Piano Trios Op.63 and 80 (Vol.1). Volume 2 is also well-performed and recorded. Schumann surely wrote some lovely chamber music, as evidenced by the three works here. The Trio in G minor, Op.110, is a work of lyrical beauty. The other two works are equally delightful. No lover of the gifted Schumann would want to do without these modern digital recordings at a bargain price.
