Making Singles Drinking Doubles does quite a few things well. As Bloodshot Records' 100th release, it serves to celebrate the indie label's survival to the century mark. As an aural overview of Bloodshot's brief but busy history, it may be the world's first danceable biography. And as a compilation of 18 rare and unreleased tracks--most of them culled from Bloodshot's catalog of long-out-of-print seven-inch singles--it's a blow to liberate a batch of cool tunes from the sole province of pencil-necked collectors and online auction hawks. Finally, like any Bloodshot comp worth its weight in rhinestones, Making Singles Drinking Doubles offers a Chicago-scene survey (the Waco Brothers, Kelly Hogan, Neko Case) as well as a few arch covers (Moonshine Willy, the Meat Purveyors, and Rex Hobart do XTC, Madonna, and Poison, respectively). And while Ryan Adams contributes a couple tunes, he may not be the biggest name in the liner notes: that honor goes to one Jack White, heard here howling behind Andre Williams with his pre-White Stripes outfit, 2 Star Tabernacle. --Anders Smith Lindall

Put this cd on and get the party started! There are a few imaginative covers, "The Harder They Come" by the Waco Brothers, "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" by Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys and "The Madonna Trilogy" by The Meat Purveyors-Madonna songs played bluegrass-style! There is also an outstanding duet of "It's Only Make Believe" sung by Kelly Hogan and John Wesley Harding. There are two Ryan Adams' songs, one previously unreleased, "Goodbye Honey," and the other an acoustic version of "To Be Young (is to be sad, is to be high)" and both are outstanding. There are 18 tunes in all, and each one of them is worth a listen. The Bloodshot line-up is described as honky-skronk, country-punk or insurgent country, and these songs all have a country feel to them. They also have a lot of heart and soul, musical skill and a great deal of enthusiasm for the material, and most of all, they just sound like they're having a LOT OF FUN! Highly recommended!

This is drinkin' music people. It may be categorized as alt country but the singles on this album are rooted in old school country music. The kind that was played in smokey old bars. If you enjoy lyrics that you can understand and that tell a story this album is great.

      If I read my Schwann catalog correctly, there are only three full CDs of Praetorius's Terpsichore, that exquisite early 17th-century disco collection, played on period instruments. This is a fine collection, up to date in performance practice and dancey enough in spirit. Unfortunately, it isn't much longer (50:30) than my other current favorite Terpsichore collection, by the New York Renaissance Band (Arabesque Z6531, 45:45). Perhaps these producers are worried that we'll wear ourselves out dancing to this music. But I find these bouncy pieces ideal to lift my spirits or to keep me alert nearly anytime. --Leslie Gerber

      This disk lacks the medieval feel that I had hoped for. Many of the pieces sound baroque, similar to Handel's water music, with a lot of trumpets, and drums beating in a martial way. The rest are softer, but lack any real personality... they sound like a wind-up toy music box. I'm disappointed in the music, and unhappy with the disk.

      Take a break from your worries. My recommendation: turn off all electrical lighting and place a few candles about in a darkened room. Take the phone off the hook and set the dogs to patrolling the yard. Be sure the ambient temperature is agreeable. Sip from a glass of wine, smoke a cigarette, slip on some good headphones and drift away. Your ears will thank you.

      Praetorius' collection of dance music is given here a marvelous interpretation and rendering on period instruments by Pickett and the New London Consort.

      From one track to the next, it rings and warbles with sounds unlike we hear today, even in the age of synthesized output. These are just such catchy little ditties, you'll find they do lighten the load and get one tapping the feet and humming the tunes, if not even breaking out in dance.

      This is simply outstanding and unique.

      This is an extraordinary recording of a fraction of the Praetorius Dances from "Terpsichore" (he didn't write them, he just collected them, and there are hundreds). They range from genteel courtly dances to rumbustious affairs that are the equivalent of modern disco and which make all the ornaments on my mantelpiece dance with joy. The disc crackles and buzzes with the most extraordinary and delicious sounds - shawms, crumhorns, hurdy-gurdys, racketts - all served with a very nice recording. Quite simply, a must-have

      I got this CD just to have BIlly Paul's "Me And Mrs. Jones". But the fun part of having this double disc is just letting it track. "Do It Any Way You Wanna" sounds terrific, a song I had forgotten. It's the Philly sound of the 70's, a must addition to your collection if that's your thing.

        Two CDs full of wonderful gems from the 1950s and 1960s - gospel, soul, R&B, blues, pop, doo wop, they're all here on this Metro re-issue, in good quality sound, although a few of the tracks have been slightly truncated. A few old chestnuts share space with less familiar but welcome tracks from the El Dorados, Betty Everett, Little Richard with Jimi Hendrix, Elmore James, Rosco Gordon and many others.
        The original July 1958 recording of Hank Ballard and the Midnighter's historic The Twist was made in Miami FL for Vee-Jay but unreleased at the time, the song appearing instead on a November 1958 re-recording for Federal, originally as a B-side in 1960. The rarer Vee-Jay recording is listed here, complete with recording date and anecdotal information, but is actually the Federal/King hit recording, presumable due to some kind of licensing error.

          This extraordinary set of live Klemperer performances should be in the collection of everyone who cares about Klemperer and his marvelous style of music making. Massive and often slow but always vital and alive, they will not appeal to everyone. But it is astonishing how these CDs bring into sharp focus Klemperer's real magnetism on the podium. As good as his EMI recordings are, they are so very much the product of the recording studio one can be forgiven for wondering whether they represent what Klemperer was in fact capable of achieving in live performance, particularly near the end of his career when his various physical disabilities became almost overwhelming impediments to performance. Somehow, almost miraculously, Klemperer put it all together for a few weeks in the late Spring of 1968 in Vienna to produce truly incandescent performances. Not note perfect by any means, this is music making nevertheless for the ages. I suppose the Mahler 9th comes closest to failure as it offers some of the most ragged playing in the set. (According to the excellent liner notes, some of that can be attributed to Klemperer but more to the orchestra's unfamiliarity with Mahler's last great symphony and even downright hostility to Mahler's music in general.) But in the end that raggedness doesn't matter at all. Klemperer's trademark qualities as conductor are very much present in the Mahler as in all these performances: clarity of polyphonic texture; structural integrity; overall rhythmic coherence (even if ensembles are a bit 'shaky' at times). I was particularly moved by the performances of Bach and Mozart -- the 'Jupiter" symphony is positively incandescent -- as well as by the Bruckner Fifth which is, hands down, the greatest performance of that symphony I have ever heard, live or on record. But all these performances are well worth hearing again and again in spite of their foibles. All performances from the 1968 series are in good quality stereo sound; the single mono recording, a very decent-sounding performance of the Brahms German Requiem, is taken from a Klemperer concert in Vienna about ten years earlier. I don't recommend this set to the 'note perfect' crowd or to anyone who has a fixed idea about what is the "best" recording of the Beethoven Fifth or Mahler Ninth. But if you are prepared to hear the 'thoughts' of an old man who has struggled with this music all his life, for whom this music meant more than anything else on earth and for which he was willing to push himself past pain and infirmity for one last encounter, then I think you will be moved and enriched by this priceless set.
